Salted Hot Chocolate.

As mid-afternoon hit on our snowed- in Saturday, I started to go a little stir crazy. I love being snowed in, but one can only take so many bad action movies, spazed cleaning moments, and requests to make something to eat every 5 minutes from a turkey-loving husband.
I certainly think I will be well prepared for children one day.
I decided to mock one of my favorite Starbucks’ drinks on the chilly day while watching the snow fall.
And I really needed something to take the edge off of my . . . newlywed bliss.
I knew it could only be made better with some of my best friends.
I don’t like to play favorites, but three is a crowd. So I chose the Godiva White Chocolate and left the others out.
Don’t worry. They’ll be put to good use.
I have this obsession with fresh whipped cream. An obsession so strong, that I can whip up an entire carton and just eat it straight.
With some sugar of course.
I knew it would top off the hot chocolate perfectly.
Like most, I love the sweet + salty combo. Adding the whipped cream and the cocoa and cinnamon on top made it incredible.
Salted Hot Chocolate
adapted from allrecipes
1/3 cup Trader Joe’s organic cocoa powder
3/4 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
1/3 cup boiling water
3 1/2 cups milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy cream, whipped + 2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup Godiva or Bailey’s liqueur
Combine the cocoa and sugar in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Simmer and stir for about 2 minutes. Watch that it doesn’t scorch. Stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until very hot, but do not boil!
Remove from heat and add vanilla, sea salt and liqueur. Divide between 4 mugs. Add the whipped cream to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to drinking temperature. Sprinkle with cocoa and cinnamon.
Hubby didn’t drink any, but he isn’t really a fan of hot liquids. Unless they involve rum. Then you can count him in.
Oh well – more for me. :)
