When The Cat’s Away…
…the mice will play.
Mr. How Sweet has been out of town on business all week. Luckily, he is home now, which just means that I now need to shower, brush my teeth, cook real food and pause my Felicity marathon.
I must admit – many times I enjoy when Mr. How Sweet goes out of town. He enjoys it too. In fact, if I’m being perfectly honest, I think it is an excellent tip for marriage survival. It gives us each some time to ourselves, even if that only means that he gets to eat fancy dinners out and I lay on the couch for 4 hours each evening in my XXXL sweatpants from college. I cherish my alone time.
And then it gives us both a bit of anticipation and excitement for when he returns home. It keeps things spicy.
Mr. How Sweet is a perfectionist. I am very Type A, but Mr. How Sweet makes me look… Type Z. And it drives him crazy when the kitchen is a mess. I tell him that he should be happy when the kitchen is a mess, because that means he has indulged in a home cooked meal. He just looks at me. And what’s so funny is that I actually enjoy cleaning the kitchen. But trust me, that is the only place I ever clean up. I’m a disgrace.
So what does the kitchen look like when Mr. How Sweet is away?
Two separate evenings. Lots of messes. A whole other night of messes that I’m not even sharing. And you don’t even want to see the rest of the house.
But don’t worry, I cleaned it up… about 2 hours ago.

I’m calling Hoarders Anonymous for you. :-)
:) I miss Jason when he is gone, but sometimes we do enjoy our alone time!!
those photos look like Fun Stuff was goin’ on in the kitchen!!
Enjoy having him home!!
Can I come join in on the Felicity marathon if I bring chocolate?
Yes please!
I so totally do that when my hubby leaves! Actually it kinda happens anyway when he’s here…
I end up making a total mess when I cook, too! So funny!
I love how you staged healthy food remnants in the kitchen. Where’s the REAL picture of the messy (junky food) evidence!?!
My hands were too covered in chocolate to grab the camera. ;)
I’m kidnapping you next time he goes away.
better yet, maybe Mr. Barefoot will go away for a few days…. either way.. chocolate, wine, bread & bacon.
OH. YEAH.
LOL! I’m such a messy cook too.
Hunni gets sick of it after a day or so and cleans it. But he doesn’t complain because he’s not eating Hungry Man dinners every night.
I can TOTALLY relate to this post! My husband is away tonight on a business trip, and I decided to jump into sweats after work and eat dinner at the embarrassingly early hour of 5:00 (we typically eat somewhere around 7:30 or 8:00). I think alone time is absolutely essential to any relationship, and I do kind of enjoy having a “girl’s night” with my dog & cat :)
Same here! We normally eat around 8 or so… when he is gone I basically eat FROM 5-8. Oops.

Oh you crack me up! I spend from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. cooking, taking pictures and running back and forth to my computer. I nap from 2-3… then go into overdrive to get the whole mess cleaned up by the time hubby comes home for dinner. If he even saw what the kitchen looks like while he’s gone, he’d die.
What I really hate is when someone drops by and sees me in my XXL sweatpants AND my disgrace of a kitchen during those messy hours.
I hear ya!
lol i love and hate when my husband goes away – i always miss him but alone time is definitely nice and needed sometimes! plus i can eat ice cream for dinner if i want
LOL my house looks the same when Andy’s away. Hilarious. I miss him when he’s gone but I love being able to laze around, watch crap tv and dream about Ryan Reynolds.
The kitchen is ALWAYS a mess in my house! Whenever I clean it, I turn around and it’s messy again!
The Husband and I always enjoy our alone time too – it makes for a good marriage!
Yup. Looks like my kitchen. Dave hates it, but he’s realized that trying to clean up after me is futile. So we just let it messy!
Isn’t it his responsibility to clean the kitchen in your house? Cause I say the messy kitchen is his fault for going away in the first place. Serves him right!
Felicity??????? I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE THAN I THOUGHT.
i know what you mean about a little alone time. i definitely like to have it–i know i am a newly wed and all, but i went from living on my own (well, with a few roomies) to living with my husband and we are always together! i tell him to go play with his friends.
love the messes, that’s a sign of normalcy, i say ;)
girl, that’s what my kitchen looks like all.the.time. no shame :)
I love Felicity. Want to hear something? I too went to college for a guy. I also cut off my hair and my ratings/readership dropped. However, I think my personality is more like the super cool Meghan. I even have a secret shoebox.
I like when my bf goes away. He should do it more often. I’m mean!
Cooking with passion is a great thing until I look around the kitchen…. :-)
I totally hear ya on the “out of town” thing. As much as I miss my hus [he’s 700 miles away right now], it’s nice to relax, do your own thing, and it’s exciting when I see him again, not like every day after work, “oh hey hun (again)”… haha, just kidding. kind of.
Oh, and I am THE messiest chef. It’s slightly embarassing.
xoxo
Kris
I am the same way. I kind of enjoy spending a few days to myself, but then after a few days, I miss my hubby terribly!
omg! lol. I’m the Typa AAAAAA in our house lol
I’m so anal about having a clean kitchen, but one night a week I make a point of laying on the couch in the frumpiest clothes I own and refuse to clean a single thing. It’s so liberating!!
Haha! You make me feel so much better. I love cooking and HATE doing the dishes. When we were first married, my husband did them. Now, I think he’s learned that he can get by without it. Our poor kitchen has suffered as a result. I should probably go clean it now…
Alright, now I’m even more in love with your blog! My mom and I got reallyyy into Felicity this past summer– we almost finished the whole series…but ended up watching the last few episodes last time I was home! So!!…Ben or Noel? :)
Enjoy your time with Mr. Sweet!
Ben!
And in case you’re wondering… I’d take Pacey over Dawson too. ;)
Oh, FOR SURE! My mom and I also started watching Dawson’s on and off this past year–I honestly can’t stand Dawson! Pacey gets cuter by the episode though :)
What a great post, Jessica! I totally agree with you about enjoying when my husband is out of town (which he is right now until Tuesday). It is nice to have a little time apart. I totally miss my husband, and always look forward to when he comes home!
