Peppermint Mocha Milkshake.
I’ve told you before that I don’t like coffee, unless it is loaded with lots of sugar and syrups and cream. And whatever other addictive substance they put in that liquid crack. Naturally, peppermint mochas fit the bill. I like to enjoy one or two hot peppermint mocha lattes during the holiday season, but since I also don’t love warm drinks, I’d rather drink them cold.
This makes me sound quite picky. I promise I am not.
Except when it comes to shoes. And chocolate. And men. You know, all of the important things.
Last Friday, I swung through the Starbucks drive-thru and got the elusive peppermint mocha. A medium. Not a grandelargeventiwhateveryoucallit. I’m seriously an embarrassment to myself.
I have many bad habits, but am thrilled to say that spending money on daily coffee and going through drive-thru’s are not one of them. Instead I choose to throw money away on inanimate objects like shoes that can only be worn once.
As I stumbled out of bed on Saturday morning, all I could think about was this peppermint mocha. They must have added extra crack on Friday. I don’t know what else it could be. All I knew was that I needed it now.
And when there isn’t a single grind of good coffee in your house, you whip up a frozen shake!
Let me just tell you that I adore mint and chocolate combinations. I find them to be incredibly refreshing and you get to eat more since it doubles as a breath mint.
This was so delicious that I have had three more glasses since Saturday. One being last evening as I watched the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show feeling like a stuffed sausage.
And I didn’t even have to brush my teeth before bed because it was so minty!
Sorry Mr. How Sweet.
Peppermint Mocha Milkshake
serves 1
1 cup chocolate milk (almond, rice or soy works too!)
4 ice cubes
1/2 cup greek yogurt (ice cream works too, I just didn’t have any)
1/2 tablespoon instant coffee powder (this can be adjusted given your coffee tastes)
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
1/4 teaspoon sugar for some sweetness
whipped cream for garnish
1 candy cane
Throw all ingredients into a blender except for whipped cream and candy cane. Bread the top off of the candy cane and crush. Pour shake into glass and top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane. Throw the remaining candy can stick in the shake!
The best part? I get this all to myself. Mr. How Sweet hates chocolate and mint together. I know. What planet is he from?

This must be what Christmas tastes like.
Christmas in a milkshake! Perfect for Australians…
Afraid I must be on the same planet as Mr. How Sweet as I also can’t stand mint and chocolate! Why ruin good chocolate with mint :P
Really??! I forgive you.
I’m putting this on my Christmas list.
my husband hates chocolate and mint together too!! They are crazy ;) I am sooo excited to try this, thanks!!
Speaking of peppermint… I’m going to make peppermint meringues as holiday favours for my teachers. That should be pretty!
YUM!!! Would love the recipe! Do you have a special one or did you just find yours off the internet?
Ohmygosh we must try this! Chocolate and mint is the best combo and just scream holidays! Yay!
Now I really want ice cream…which is wierd for me since its 30 degrees outside right now. ;-)
It’s cold here too. It’s okay. Have some anyway.
Wait wait, this is made with milk (maybe low-fat?) and greek yogurt – that totally makes this healthy, right? Right?
Yes!
YUMMY! I loooooooove peppermint mocha!! Will be trying this soon (today would be a good day, since it’s unseasonably warm – almost 60 degrees out at 7 a.m. in Northern NY?!?! In December?!?! Crazy!). Thanks for a potential new addiction…
I haven’t had mint and chocolate together in forever. I want this!
Starbucks= crack :) Your recreation is AWESOME. Love the greek yogurt in it. And how delicious are those minty chips?
This looks great! I must add, I’ve never seen a Starbucks drive-thru…awesome.
We don’t have a Starbuck’s here in Altoona, which usually saves me from the fancy mocha drinks. Nothing could save me from this, though. :-)
oh man… don’t do this to me! Seriously, that looks amazing!
They do put crack in Starbucks! OK not really crack, but there is like 5 times as much caffeine than any other coffee you would get elsewhere. So practically!

Hello, lover. I just fwd’d this link to my fiance. Subject of email was “THIS is breakfast in bed. Hint hint”. Can’t blame me for trying :)
Oh yum! I just sat down to a mug of mint cocoa, but this looks better. I prefer things cold too; have you ever tried the frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity3?
No! I’m dying to try it. But I did try making my own once: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2010/07/08/frozen-hot-chocolate-the-healthier-way/
Mint and chocolate is one of the best combinations on earth.
This is definitely my kind of milkshake! :)
It must be a husband thing… mine despises the mint/chocolate combo too and usually, he will eat anything. But me? I could so take a cup of this right now…
Chocolate and mint are wonderful together!!!! One of my favorite candy bars is the York Peppermint Pattie. Of course, I also like 3 Musketeers, Dark chocolate, those little Hershey Nuggets w/ Almonds, Reese’s, and basically any chocolate w/o caramel. But still, that shake looks fabulous. Sometimes I drop a peppermint into my hot chocolate, and that’s pretty yummy, too!!!!
I love peppermint patties too! I made them once: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2010/03/01/peppermint-patties/
Love mocha, but haven’t had it with peppermint. Good idea. Suzanne
I’m also a big fan of the chocolate-peppermint flavor combination, and this shake looks fantastic! I have grand plans to create a few mint-chocolate desserts for the holidays… will post them soon!
Your version is MUCH prettier than Starbucks!! yummy
dear jessica,
why are you trying to make me fat?
love,
heather
My mother in law makes some mint chocolate brownies and my husband loves (I’m not a huge mint and chocolate fan) but I know he would LOVE this shake! Your toppings are too cute :)
See, now you’re gonna get me addicted, and I’m not gonna be able to stop!
Oh wow…this looks extremely good…i have to try this one for sure!
yum! i need to try to make this
Oooh sounds SO good! I love chocolate and mint together. Love your mug for it too! If you open up a shop that sells these I think Starbs might be in trouble!
I also always mix up the sizes at Starbucks and usually just say “the smallest one”. Then they always correct me and I always feel like saying “Who cares, you know what size I’m talking about! In the real world, things are small-medium-large!!”
On another note, I will definitely be adding the ingredients for this to my grocery list!!! :)
i love starbucks peppermint mochas! i look forward to them all year long :) and now i can make them frozen (even better!) in my very own kitchen whenever i want!! thanks for sharing!
This, right here, speaks right to my soul.
I love anything mint + chocolate, but my husband doesn’t either! We are eerily similar :)
I need this soon.
Those turquoise chips (mint choc?) look absolutely fantastic on the milkshake. good eye, kid!
xoXOxo
jenn
awesome!!
and are those mint chips?? so pretty, I WANT !! :D
They are!
Ohhh this sounds incredible!
How could someone not like mint and chocolate together? They are a gift from the universe!!!! I love them! Have you tried the gingerbread latte from starbucks? That is my current addiction!
Nope I haven’t… I’m not a huge gingerbread fan! Now I’m the weird one.
Oh my goodness, that looks heavenly! You and your husband come from 2 different food universes! Do you think it would taste okay with low-fat milk?
Love your blog :)
Yes! I actually use chocolate almond because it was what I had and it is fairly low fat.
So trying this! my three year old will love it!!!!!
thanks for sharing!! love your site!
Have a great day!!
You’ve outdone yourself. I think this looks like holiday perfection in a glass!
Jessica, every morning you amaze me with how many new recipes you come up with. Lloyd LOVES choc and mint together, and um, so do I. This looks incredible.
I remember those mint chocolate chip cupcakes you made! They looked incredible!
Can I go home and make a milkshake at 7:30am?? I want to skip work for this.
I second that. I want to go home and make this. What are they going to do? Fire me? ;)
I say do it. :)
Doooo it.
Oh my goodness, how do you come up with these things? Brilliant. Simply brilliant.
Just wanted to thank you for a great laugh – every time I read your blog I LMAO! You are a wonderful and special breath of fresh air ! xxoo from New Mexico!
Thank you so much for reading!
Gaaaah this looks so good! I loooove chocolate and mint. Mmmmmmmm.
yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
I love how you served it. So cute and I wish I had one right now. :)
I think you may be a genius. Really.
And where the heck do you get the green chocolate chips? I want to use them in my baking too!
Yum! This looks great. I love mint in hot cocoa so this has to be good if there’s coffee in it too! For some reason I’m not a fan of traditional mochas but I love me some White mocha! My daughter is like you and not a fan of the hot beverage, but when she does the drive-thru, no matter what time of year it is, she always gets the Peppermint White Mocha blended. I bet you’d like it, I think they put more crack in the white mocha. LOL.
