Cinnamon Sugar Flatbread Crackers.

One of my fondest memories as a child is eating toast with butter and cinnamon sugar at my grandparents house. It forever solidified my adoration for all things cinnamon sugar. My grandma even had this fun little cinnamon sugar shaker that we loved to use. It looks like a little man… and now that sounds creepy. These days, I’m satisfied with cinnamon sugar in a bowl. Ever since I made easy, cheesy whole wheat crackers a few months ago, I’ve been anxious to try some other versions. Next came everything flatbreads which are some of my favorites. But I thought it was time to sweeten things up a bit. You know, since I haven’t done that in a while. Plus, these are just too easy! You can make them from start to finish in 20 minutes and they make an excellent snack. You can eat them in less than 20 minutes too. Trust me. And you can make little square crackers or longer flatbreads. I’m all about the flatbreads. They are a perfect vehicle for more deliciousness. I obviously had to add some “butter” to my crackers, after discovering that I’m the only one on Earth who found that strange. [...]

8 Signs of Spring.

1. I found a stinkbug on a window this morning. I almost tossed my cookies. I despise those things. Was it naive for me to assume they would just disappear? I want to move to that place where no bugs or rodents exist. 2. Instead of yoga, I went back outside for a walk today after the gym. It was so nice because it is in the 60s. In February! I would have tried running, but I didn’t want to die. 3. I checked out that bathing suits on the Victoria’s Secret website this morning. Then I contemplated jumping out the window. 4. I used cream in a recipe instead of butter this morning. I don’t know why that’s Spring-like, but I’ve decided that it is. 5. I considered making a “s’mores bowl” since the s’mores pie is long gone. Nothin’ feels like summer more than s’mores, right? But I ate an apple instead because, well… see #3. 6. I’ve had James Taylor music blasting for the last 3 weeks, which fuels my unnatural obsession with him. It reminds me of summer and Michigan and my childhood and how I am really a 60-year old in a 20-something’s body. 7. [...]

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Muffins.

Remember the days when I used to have an outrageous muffin obsession? I took a brief hiatus from muffin making, which I thought would help my creativity and my waistline. Instead, I baked things even more sinful and more addicting. Creative… maybe. Helpful to the waistline? Ummm… how about no. Needless to say, muffins came back with a vengeance. I am not joking when I tell you that these muffins taste like oatmeal cookies.  No lie. You can even go as far to add raisins, but I’m just not down with shriveled fruit in my baked goods. Instead I choose chocolate. If I think these taste like cookies, I can almost guarantee that you will. Healthy muffins that taste like treats! Remember me? I try my best to not consume green things unless we’re talking about apple flavored Jolly Ranchers or dyed adult beverages in Pittsburgh on St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, they have a little butter. Yes, butter makes the world go ’round. Yes, they taste delicious. No, you should not sub anything else for the butter. A quarter cup of butter spread throughout 12 muffins won’t hurt you. In fact, it will probably complete you. So said Mother Lovett. [...]

Ew.

Why is this in my fridge? Better yet, it’s not even in my crisper drawer, otherwise known as “the place vegetables go to die.” Why?

Pizza Stuffed Potatoes.

Chances are, you can find pizza in our kitchen one or two nights every single week. Mr. How Sweet just can’t go a few days without it. It’s the one meal that doesn’t need the presence of chicken or steak to be deemed a “meal” by him. He claims that pepperoni is enough. Oh, and sometimes we have bacon on our pizza. I guess he kinda knows me. So, I’m always looking for new pizza-like foods. Unfortunately, these still didn’t count as real pizza for Mr. How Sweet, which meant we had pizza the next night anyway. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t tasty! In case you’re wondering, I did try these with sweet potatoes since we loved them so much. They were good too. Not as pretty, but they definitely worked. However, I’d much rather stuff my sweet potato with brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel, marshmallows and bacon. Who wouldn’t? The best part about these treats is that you can make multiple flavors all at once. That’s perfect for me since we all know I get bored easily and change my mind every 6 seconds. I loaded on pepperoni and sausage for Mr. How Sweet and made some with fresh [...]

Yesterday and Tomorrow.

Yesterday wasn’t just Valentine’s Day. It marked one year since I had seen my grandma (my paternal grandmother, not Mother Lovett) for the last time. I’ve mentioned it before, but I am just so, so grateful that Mr. How Sweet and I spent last Valentine’s day with my parents and grandparents. Having no idea that in less than 48 hours she would be taken from us so suddenly (a mere 8 months since Mother Lovett’s death), the last day we spent together could not have been better. It was simple, beginning with lunch, moving on to shopping, and ending with eating truffles from Godiva – something we had done many times before. But as I get older, it is evident that easy, simple moments are the ones that I remember the most and mean everything to me. I didn’t realize it before, but I find it ironic that we spent what is supposed to be the “most romantic day of they year” with the two couples I admired most in the world. Ah… life lessons! You may remember the wise words my grandma mentioned to Mr. How Sweet and me last Christmas – words that carry so much meaning, words [...]

S’mores Pie.

This may be a bit ridiculous. And it just may be one of the best desserts I’ve ever made. You might remember that last year I whipped up some mini s’mores tarts. They were fabulous, but I must have had a few screws loose. Why didn’t I just make an entire pie? Oh! I remember why. Because my husband doesn’t like s’mores. He’s apparently from another planet. Can’t he just sacrifice his taste buds for my favorite flavor combination? I guess not. I ended up with an entire pie. In my house. In my fridge. With only one person to eat it. Dreams do come true! Welcome to my new favorite dessert. Did your pants button pop yet? Pleeeeeease make this. I’m begging you. I need someone to share the love with me since Mr. How Sweet would rather eat chicken and steak than s’mores. And I’m warning you: It may not be pretty once cut. As long as you chill it, you should get a semblance of a slice out. But if that fails, just go to town with a spoon. Trust me, no one will care. They are eating s’mores pie after all! Seriously, it’s not like you could [...]

Linguine with Clams Casino.

If you are in need of a last minute Valentine’s Day dinner, I have just the ticket. And if you’ve already celebrated or are going out to eat, I must convince you to make this as soon as you’re back in the kitchen. It’s easy. It’s inexpensive. It’s fast. It’s mouth watering. Get some little clams, even if they freak you out. Trust me, I’d rather have the real stuff, but for some reason I don’t quite have access to that in Pennsylvania. I wonder why? I’ve never been good at geography. What we have here is a twist on linguine with clam sauce and clams casino. Two of my favorite things. Obviously. My mom used to make linguine with clam sauce when I was growing up, and I think she went through a big linguine and clam sauce phase in the 60s and 70s. It seemed to be popular then, didn’t it? If she wasn’t making fondue, she was making linguine with clam sauce. I envision her cooking it for friends while wearing bell bottoms and paisley prints. I’m afraid to think about where the night went after that since they were “into the arts” in the 60s and [...]
