Almond Joy Scones.
There are a few reasons you may like them:
1. It’s sort of weird to eat Halloween candy for breakfast. I mean, I totally did it for 16 years of my life between the days of Nov 1st and 4th, when I developed the worst stomach ache of the century (yes, every single year) from eating too many Almond Joys and Snickers’. This is no Mallo Cup but it sure tastes like a treat, and you won’t look weird eating it.
2. They are fluffy and dense all at the same time. Scones are often touted as healthy and hey, I’m not about to shut that down. I think it’s because they have less sugar or something than muffins and face-sized cookies, but what do I know? Whatever… that’s fine by me. Especially when I cover them in tons… and tons… of calories.
3. While they were baking, I whipped up some bread made with brown butter. Scones are good for the creative mind. The scones made me do it. Thank the scones.
4. I finally found some cake-flavored vodka yesterday. After sampling a “fruit cake” (add fruit punch), a “cake for breakfast” (add iced coffee), a “cake tart” (add limeade), a “diet cake” (ha! add diet soda), and a “cake beer float” (umm hellllo yes…. add root beer), I (passed out after I) decided that you must hear about the scones today. I don’t know why… just thank the scones.
I totally used to be one of those weirdos who hated scones. In fact, I’ve never been a huge fan of pastries. Except for pumpkin donuts. And fresh cherry glazed donuts. Annnnd… cheese danishes.
And cream puffs? Okay I’m done.
Oh wait, one more.
Chocolate croissants.
Raise your hand if you think I need to make those.
In the meantime, I should probably take drizzling lessons. See above.
But I can’t really help it if I’m heavy handed on the candy. It’s just how I am. And you can’t change me, darnit!
I made these scones sort of look like biscuits. I was bored of triangles. It happens. Make it happen.
Almond Joy Scones
[adapted from these scones {in which post I use waaaay too many italics}]
makes 16 scones
2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
2/3 cup almond meal
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened flaked coconut
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cold butter (1 1/2 sticks), cut into small pieces
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon coconut extract
raw turbinado sugar for sprinkling
3 ounces of chocolate, melted
Preheat oven to 425.
In large bowl combine flour, almond meal, sugar, coconut, baking soda, powder, and salt.. Cut in butter until it forms coarse crumbs with the flour mixture – I actually use my hands to combine and mash the butter in. Stir in buttermilk, coconut extract and vanilla extract. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently.
Divide dough in half and pat into 7-inch round circles.. Cut into 6 or 8 wedges, or use a round biscuit cutter. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sugar
Bake at 425 for 12-14 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool, then drizzle with melted chocolate.
There is only one left and I’m about to wrestle someone for it.

These look awesome. I’m actually not an Almond Joy fan but these look way delicious.
Did you go to a cake festival or something???
Hahaha no, I bought the cake vodka and googled recipes online. :)
Haha I’m an idiot- I just re read it. I think the first time I thought you bought the vodka AFTER trying all those cake treats. But, someone probably should start a cake festival.
Seriously!
Two of my favorites in one!! Looks delicious!
believe it or not almond joys are my favorite halloween candy. in college kids would come trick or treat in our dorms and i would buy the pack with almond joys but not give any of those out. cruel, i know…but worth it! i can’t wait to make these :)
Totally acceptable to finagle candy (or candy flavors) into breakfast. Really it’s quite genius. Hmm, I say that a lot about you. Must be true!
Almond Joy is my son’s fav candy! These look amazing. Can’t wait to try them.
I love how these look like biscuits but aren’t! Where did you get to taste all those “cake” goodies??
… I made them. Mini shots.
Sometimes (read, most times) I think you read my mind. I am coconut obsessed lately and could not for the life of me get my mind off almond joys yesterday… Or the toasted coconut ice cream I had over the weekend… cookiedoughcreations didn’t have coconut anything so I settled for a Zoreo ice cream sandwich. If you haven’t heard of cookiedoughcreations you should look it up rightthisverysecond.
Ummm I haven’t. OMG.
These look fantastic! I bet the coconut extract makes it incredible. Yummy!
Oh dear me. The last photo is my favorite! I was going to say, “these look like biscuits!” I’ve never been a huge scone person. Like if there was a lineup of pastries, it might be the last I choose. Not sure why, b/c they are extremely delicious. However, if I saw these in a lineup, I would snatch it up right away…not just because I would think it was actually a biscuit ;) but because of the insanely amazing coconut/almond/chocolate combination. Does this comment make ANY sense?
Yes! And you probably would choose them last because I think scones have a reputation of being DRY. Blah. At least that’s how I always felt.
Wow, these scones look amazing!! Totally love them…great flavors, and so pretty! :)
Love this. What a great idea for scones.
Making these! And hand raised, yes please, make the chocolate croissants!!!
Oh no you didn’t ! Almond Joy’s are one of my (and B’s) favorite candy bars. We always buy extra at Halloween ‘for the kids’. haha.
i used to hate scones then i made them at home and now i have a tiny obsession. but a candy flavored scone oh my i think you have turned my tiny obsession into a large crazy obsession. i think cake vodka and scones will be on the menu for this weekend cause honestly how can they not be???
It’s so nice to meet you, Almond Joy scones.
Now, excuse me while I shove you in my face!
xoxo
I’ve been wondering how that cake flavored vodka is, if it is the brand I am thinking of. Perhaps a review or some cocktail recipes are to come?
Oh dear…
Ahhh the Halloween honeymoon period. Candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner… I can totally relate. And tradesies for my favorites (funnily enough, I always make sure I get everyone’s almond joys!) My stomachache isn’t helped by the fact that my birthday is on November 4th, on which I experience my annual birthday breakfast of giant cream-filled donuts (in addition to my candy).
I can completely relate. My birthday is Nov 7th and while I usually finish all the good candy by then, I have a complete sugar hangover.
Consider my jaw unhinged and inhaling every single one. Dayamn.
I could live on scones. You might think I’m kidding, but I’m not. Also – I just caught up on about 100 posts of yours, and that trifle was so beautiful it took my breath away. And when my mom wouldn’t let me shave my legs, I just shaved ONE. Haha, showed her..I guess.
Oh ma gawwwsh… lol.
Keep us posted on the Cake flavored Vodka. There is a flavored vodka of almost everything these days. The last flavored vodka that I had that I fell in love with was sweet tea vodka + actual sweet tea = the best drink ever. Or at least a strong one that really sneaks up on ya :)
And the scones. I love Almond Joy and Mounds Bars…big time!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who is already excited for Halloween candy! I love this idea! They look fantastic :) And I actually prefer the biscuit shape too.
Almond Joys are my FAVORITE candy of all time! Thanks so much for the recipe, can’t wait to try it!
I sure wish I had some of these to accompany almond joy flavored coffee this morning!!
I am not a fan of coconut, unless it’s toasted and in a Fannie May Trinidad so, can I just lick the spoon?
Absolutely. :) And what is a Fannie May Trinidad?
Oooohhhhh….the most lovely, light, smooth and creamy, melt in your mouth goodness that is covered with an almost white chocolate, but it isn’t really white chocolate I don’t know what it is, coating that has flecks of toasted coconut throughout that coating. Almost like a truffle only much lighter and the inside melts the moment it hits your tongue. I want one right now. I realize you must not have a Fannie May in your part of world and I am so sorry for you.
Here is a link to the website http://www.fanniemay.com/store/item.asp?item_id=194.
You might not want to go there though. They have other things there. Chocolate truffles, mint meltaways, turtles…I think I may have a breakdown soon.
I’m doomed.
These sound heavenly. I need these in my life.
I love how you used biscuit cutters to make scones! Very cute.
the pictures you take on your blog are beautiful! So glad I just discovered your site!
Thank you!
They look like biscuits…chocolate covered biscuits.
Wow! I love scones (especially the traditional British kind (I like the circle shape) with the clotted cream and tea :). I also love Almond Joys. I have been digging the almond joy flavor creamer in my coffe all summer. I should be enjoying it with one of these scones!
Also, please consider my hand raised for chocolate croissants!
There is an almond joy coffee creamer?! Man, I wish I liked coffee.
Oh, ha, I wish I wasn’t so addicted to coffee! (The creamer doesn’t help–in fact I wasn’t a frequent coffee drinker until I started using liquid creamers, about a year ago I guess. Now I drink it daily…oops!!)
Put those in my belly NOW! :-) Love scones and love anything almond joy tasting. These look amazing. With or without the chocolate.
Love love Almond Joy & Mound bars. Suggest using squeeze bottles to achieve easy and seamless drizzling effect :)
You are brilliant my friend.
holy yum!! there’s something about the combination of coconut, almond and chocolate that has me weak in the knees.
Does the cake vodka actually taste like cake? It’s probably best if I don’t know the answer to that. Oh and *raises hand* Most definitely to the chocolate croissants. I’ve never had one!
It does when mixed with things – I’m honestly not a huge vodka fan (I prefer rum), but it’s really good mixed!

Cake vodka? Seriously?! Amazing :-)
Oooh I love scones! And anything with coconut. These look delicious, although I would probably double it with the chocolate hehehe – maybe dip ’em in chocolate or a thick chocolate blanket instead of the drizzle (mostly because I know I will not do a good job drizzling and well, because I like adding more chocolate to anything) ;)
Hand raised. Chocolate croissants are my favorite. ^_^
I seriously want to figure out a way to implement coconut in every single type of food I eat from here on out. Starting out with these scones.
I suck at drizzling too! I’ve tried to convince my children that they taste better when they look messed up because it means they have more chocolate on them. Totally works for me!
ummm could you make those fresh cherry glazed donuts you mentioned? that’d be greaaaaaaaat.
I wish I could. I get them every summer when we vacation in Michigan and I’m not even sure where to begin to make them!
Scones make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Especially when they are warm and eaten with butter.
Oh my goodness. I think I need these right now!
My friend who is a bartender experimented with the Cake-flavored vodka. I seem to recall her mentioning that if you mix it with pineapple juice and some Grenadine (perhaps?), it tastes like Pineapple Upside Down cake.
yes, please make chocolate croissants!!!
Can I ask a completely stupid question and ask, where do you get almond meal? Or can I just grind up almonds in my coffee grinder? Thanks. And also, yes, chocolate croissants please, did you even have to ask?
No stupid at all Amanda! I can find it at my local grocery store, but it’s usually with the nuts and not with the flours/baking goods. And yes, you can grind the almonds yourself, but I haven’t tried it in a coffee grinder (though I would think that would work?) – I use a food processor!
I raised my hand… did you see it? no… hmmm maybe I should be less subtle… like this guy…

Ha!!
You should probably enjoy one of these along with it. I am nt sure if it’s a good or bad thing that I now know this exists. http://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/espresso/salted-caramel-mocha
Oh man, I saw this yesterday and just about died. I wanted it so bad but opted for a pumpkin spice instead.
I, too, would love to know where you obtain the “almond meal” for the ALmond Joy Scones. Can you purchchase it at Tops or Safeway?
I, too, would appreciate knowing where to purchase “amond meal”. (Would Safeway or Top Foods carry it?) Your help is appreciated. Thanks.
I can find it at my local grocery store, and have also seen it at whole foods. In my grocery store it is actually with the nuts, as opposed to the flours. If you can find any, you can blend almonds in a food processor until they turn to a powdery mix. :)
I should add I do not have a Tops or Safeway so I am not sure about those stores!
