Makeup Basics Stuff I’m Totally Obsessed With Right Now.
Okay, time to freak out over makeup and skin care stuff again! This is all I do in my free time.
Here’s what I’m loving now and have been using consistently:
A few months ago I asked what (if any) sort of stuff I should be using on my face in my forthcoming old age. Answers we’re all across the board, ranging from “everyone should have a regimen with products!” to “don’t put anything on your face ever, except olive oil!” After lots and lots of research (I’m talking months – it is safe to say I look at reviews on makeup alley about 45 times a day, including while I’m standing in Sephora and Ulta before I buy a product), I bought this Trish McEvoy beauty booster serum. I was torn between that and the Estee Lauder advanced night repair above, but I decided to try the beauty booster first. I.freaking.loved.it. I definitely found that it improved my skin tone and I really liked the formula. Unfortunately it was pricey (I think $125) and I totally BLEW through the bottle. I definitely used too much, but whatever… live and learn.
Since the advanced night repair was much cheaper, I decided to give it a try before buying another beauty booster bottle, and it’s what I’m currently using. I like it… I still feel like it has improved my skin tone somewhat… I don’t feel quite as “glowy” as I did with the beauty booster serum, and I don’t love the formula as much. But it’s much more economical, and I feel like I should continue using it because there are so many excellent reviews. Then I get torn and wonder… do I really just *think* that I like the beauty booster serum because it’s more expensive? Do I just assume it’s better? I’m a marketer’s dream. It’s true.
Alas… that’s where I’m at. I put these on at night, then I moisturize with coconut oil or cetaphil cream. Love.
Before I do the moisturizer though, I do throw this kiehl’s avocado eye cream on around my eyes. LOVE THIS JUNK. OMG. Just love love love. Nothing else to say.
For a daytime moisturizer, I’ve been using the beauty booster SPF cream, and again – ADORE it. I bought it with the serum but clearly didn’t blow through it as quickly. I love how this makes my skin feel, and it wasn’t too heavy to use in the summer whatsoever. Most work days I don’t wear any makeup (oh my husband is just oh-so lucky), so after my post workout face wash/shower, this is all that goes on my face. It is awesome. I don’t think I could switch… but I am weird and would like to use the same brand of serum and moisturizer. Of all the things I’m insane about…
If I am going to wear makeup… I’ve been using this MAC BB beauty balm. It’s a fairly new product for me but I adore it. I put it on immediately after the moisturizer above. I’ve mentioned before that I hatehatehate putting ANYTHING on my face. I hate using foundation (never have, hopefully never will), hate using any sort of cream foundations and really don’t even like using powders. I just hate having stuff on my face, so I usually use only concealer, or maybe tinted moisturizer… or maybe nothing. This is great though – still super light and gives a teeny tiny bit of coverage. Feels like I’m wearing nothing.
As for eye stuff, I talked about my infatuation with this smashbox photo op concealer/highlighter last year. Still going strong. This is the one product I can not live without, and that’s saying a ton given my love for mascara and lipgloss. This has replaced all concealer for me. It’s amazing. Of course… the reviews are so 50/50, but that seems to happen most with products I really love. Adore this. I also really like this YSL touche eclat, but it comes second to photo op. Always.
For a shadow base, it doesn’t get better than this urban decay primer. In my opinion there is NOTHING better than this. It lasts all day, through sweat and everything. Perfection.
And since I try every mascara on the market, I have to tell you that this MAC zoom lash is STILL my favorite. Been using it since 2008 and I always come back to it. Again, the reviews on this are very split but I flipping love it. It beats all mascara for me, including the benefit they’re real! and everything else that promises to lengthen and thicken and grow your lashes to freakish standards.
Alright. Indulge me. What are you freaking out over right now?

“…forthcoming old age,” I know how you feel. I’m getting wrinkly, molely and other stuff I don’t care to think about. This makeup stuff really does work, though. So I see myself investing more $ into it these days, too!
I’m loving Organix Shampoo and Conditioner, which you can get at any drugstore for around $7.99 or so. I’ve been using the Moroccan Argan Oil for a month now, and it really does make my hair soft and shiny. I also currently love Laura Mercier Sitckgloss (a mix between a lipstick and a lipgloss). Finally, I just rediscovered Bare Escentuals Rare Minerals Night Treatment at the BE outlet. It really reduces the amount of redness that I notice in my skin. I’ll have to continue to make the 40 minute trek to the outlets near Philly because they don’t seem to have it in the regular stores anymore.
I am obsessed with Essie nail polish, love the fall colors…serious addiction!
Considering your love of trying out new beauty products (which I totally share), have you ever checked out birchbox.com or glossybox.com? I do Birchbox, and you pay $10 per month (or $110 for 12 mos.) and they send you a box full of beauty samples every month. AND you get discounts if you decide you love it and want to buy the full size. I have found so many amazing products through Birchbox!!
The best mascara I have ever found is the Bare Essentials Buxom Lash. It gives you baby doll eye lashes without all of the clumping and layering. One coat and you’re good to go. It is my holy grail product.
i love the post. I’ve been searching for a good mascara, I don’t know why I haven’t tried MAC. So cool, I came looking for a recipe and found a good mascara to try. I have been looking at different brands, but I was having a hard time deciding. Thank you.
I recently started putting olive oil on my face every night before bed and my face feels amazing now!!! I’ve always had trouble with my skin and have tried every product from La Mer to Neutrogena and nothing has made my skin look and feel the way that olive oil has.
I’m freaking out this week over MAC x Marilyn Monroe…to supplement/prep myself for the freaking out I’ll be doing on Halloween when nars X Andy Warhol comes out. I know MAC is releasing a mascara with their collection(I forget which, though), and a couple of dazzleglasses too.
I’m ridiculously obsessed with Butter London nail polish these past few months. Pricey as helllll but I’ve been getting my money’s worth(I’m an artist and they don’t chip through stone work/clay work/weird wire sculpting/anything). i’d recommend looking into any of these lines…and i totally deserve free merchandise from all of these lines, too <3
I’m obsessing over nail polishes lately. I went through a gel/shellac phase and now I’m just doing normal nail polish with a coat of clean no-chip on top. LOVE it. My only problem is that it lasts so long now, and all I want to do is play with different colors!
What is this no-chip? I’m a gel fan. Actually bought an LED lamp and do it myself. But I can’t stop buying regular polishes and would love something to make regular polish last more than 24 hours!
I’m obsessed with the kora organics facial expholiator (is that how it’s spelt???) Anyho it’s the bees knees I look so much fresher after using it
You must have been digging around in my makeup drawer! I love. love, love the Smashbox Photo-op & Urban Decay Potion.
I think we’re around the same age, so I’ve been thinking about ::gasp:: wrinkles & whatnot, too & testing a couple things out. I had a sample of Dr. Brandt’s collagen booster serum & absolutely adored it. BUT it’s $75 for one ounce & I’m just not ready to take that plunge right now, so in the meantime, I’m using Philosophy’s Take a Deep Breath.
I just bought a Clarisonic Mia, it is amazing and I think it will be worth the investment! My skin is already feeling smoother, fresher and cleaner after only a few days. I am in love with Kheils Midnight Recovery Serum (totes does what it says on the bottle and I have been getting so many compliments on my skin since I started using it) and I use Garnier’s BB Cream every day, perfect amount of coverage for me!
I think they stopped carrying it in stores, but the Yes to Carrots hair mask was the best stuff ever. I never had a bad hair day after using it. Also, I never liked the Benefit mascara. My lashes never stayed curled, so what the frig? (I may or may not heat my curler with a hairdryer…um) I do like the Stay Don’t Stray primer. I think that is Benefit.
and i really wish the clarisonic fairy would come visit my house.
I recently discovered the Sibu line for skin care and I love what it is doing for my skin. It has started clearing up my acne scars in the month I have been using it and it gives a nice glow. I really want to try josie maran argan oil, but I haven’t splurged for that yet.
I love a new product I picked this summer. Clarins 3 dot eyeliner, it looks like a tiny felt maker with 3 divets cut out. You use it to line under your lashes so they look thicker. I lovvvve it!
does that Kiehl’s eye cream help with dark circles??
Ok, I’m a beauty product junkie also. I have a few constants though.
Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer – Makes you glow! Covers dark circles on its own. It’s the best.
Bobbi Brown Bronzers – I prefer matte bronzers, and this is one of the few out there that are natural looking and don’t shimmer. Also, she has so many shades, you can def find one for your skin tone/shade. If you want shimmer, she does those too! And, just buy her bronzer brush also. Worth the $50.
Bobbi Brown long wear gel eyeliner – this stuff lasts all day! I don’t wear liner often., but if i do, this is my go to!
Sara Happ Lip Scrub and Lip Slip – best lip stuff ever! Personally, I like the cinnamon sugar scrub. I also prefer the lip slip in the tube over the tub. Buy a few of the lip slips. And then make me a dessert inspired by the cinnamon sugar scrub, because I want to eat it!
Chanel Nail Polish – they set the nail polish trends. always classy colors. obsessed. and they do a lot of limited edition colors, which I love!
ok, I could go on, but these are the best of the best in my book! Try them all. And, I’m looking for a new mascara because YSL discontinued my fav :-( Maybe I’ll try the MAC one out.
Ok, I have no good makeup advice…I barely leave the house now that I have 8 month old twins haha buuuut I’m just at the point where I’m starting to care what I look like again, yay! I think I want to try the Mac BB that you mentioned but have no idea which shade I’d be. Which one do you use and is it true to the name? (ex: light vs extra light…)
I LOVE the Kiehls avocado eye cream too! I’ve been using it for YEARS and have never found anything better. It’s not makeup, but I’m also loving Dream Cream by Lush Cosmetics. I have sensitive skin and this body lotion is great. It’s another one of my must-haves.
go on crunchybetty.com and click through to her etsy shop…she sends the “recipe” for her facial oil and i’m telling you now that you may as well order it because it’s like black magic and lasts forever. the best.
I just got a trial size of Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair serum…anxious to see how it works on my faint sun/age spots (Hello, 30!)
I purchased a Clarisonic Mia about a month ago and it is definitely my current beauty obsession. I know it’s not a makeup but I truly an infatuated! I just want to touch my skin after I use it!
I’m dying over Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer! I spent eleventy billiion hours reading reviews. I’m glad I got it. I love it!
I’m intrigued by the Kiehl’s avocado eye stuff. I’ve used Clinique eye stuff for eons. Maybe I’ll switch it up when I run out!
Jess,
I’ve been obsessed with Mac’s Haute Naughty Mascara… What is different about the Zoom? I want to try! I’ve found this Mac Mascara that I use is HORRIBLE to take off- but I love it so I’m stuck. http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/152/10182/Products/Eyes/Mascara/Haute-Naughty-Lash/index.tmpl

Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform
you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in the near future
but I’m having a tough time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

Whenever high-end custom made bags tend to be your lifestyle, find out more about Yves St Laurent gold hobo. This unique hobo seriously isn’t your frequent laid-back hobo. It’s always oozing along with fantastic magnificence and class. This amazing brown purse certainly will add in form to the dreary ensemble. Any brown shade is finished within a fashionable solution plus it certainly not nice at all. It’s this unique confident complicated feel for it that I like. Them any bag i always would undoubtedly imagine all of the 4 Kardashian siblings would need initially eyesight. Yet, like most terrific get in style, all the Yves St . Laurent metal hobo doesn’t necessarily appear low-priced and you will have to end up being happy to shell out $1795 to get it.
