Real Life Wednesday: On What’s In My Purse.
Let’s look at the junk in my purse!
In prep for traveling today I desperately needed a purse cleanout and figured I’m nosy… maybe you’re nosy… this is what I’m hoarding around with me. I’m going to show you.
First things first: this is the bagĀ (mine has gold hardware) I’ve been using since September. It should come as no surprise considering I’ve talked about the Rebecca Minkoff Mac bags constantly in my favorites postsĀ nonstop. Last year I had a periwinkle one which I completely love, but it got dirty so quickly (I’m assuming from some of my denim/black jeans) and I really wanted a darker color that would hold up better.
I’ve bought another purse or two in the time that I’ve had this one, but I seriously cannot stop using this. It is the PERFECT size for me. It’s cross body but not huge; it’s small enough so my shoulder isn’t breaking but large enough that I can stuff a lot of crap into it. I prefer this size over the mini mac for that reason. I’m dying to get another one, but seriously… do I really need THREE of the same bags in different colors? No. I’m not going to be a brat. Two is bad enough.
AND NO OF COURSE MY STUFF WASN’T IN THE BAG THAT NEATLY. Real life purse dump:
That’s all the junk that was stuffed in there. Probably been about a month. I don’t think I’ve touched it since I went to NYC in early December… or maybe even before that. Sheesh.
Anyhoo, here are some things. Let’s see what makes the cut.
Most importantly, this fortune cookie.
I stuffed it in my purse after lunch with Michelle last Friday. I got hungry, so I ate it while photographing and cleaning things up. That’s my fortune. Whatever.
Do we think I have a lip color dependency? Probably.
I love all of these lip things above, with the exception of two products. I’ve never liked the maybelline baby lips products (I feel like they are more drying than anything) but I was tempted by the medicated version in the checkout line. Bought it, still don’t really like it. The other thing I don’t care for happens to be the maybelline color whisper balm. I mentioned this last year but I hate these things. Well, okay, I’ve only tried the one above. I actually have no idea why it’s even in my purse? I think it was in my car and I threw it in my purse as a means to get upstairs to the trash. But since my bag is where lip gloss goes to die, it didn’t make it’s way out until now. I don’t think these are moisturizing, I find that they apply unevenly and even if my lips aren’t dry, they make them LOOK dry. Not a fan. Bye bye.
I’m also not loving that Santa’s lip scrub by Lush. I love their other ones but this one is weird. It has actual chunks of confetti-like glitter inside. (which yeah, normally I would love since I’m like eternally 16 years old but no.)
This is a Michael Kors pencil case that my brother and his girlfriend got me for Christmas a few years ago. I adore it and store most of my lip stuff inside. Except for when, well… I have as many products as I do above.
Two perfume-y items! Viktor & Rolf flowerbomb which I’ve talked a lot about and a sample of Jo Malone’s dark amber and ginger lily cologne. Gah! I love the stuff. I wish it didn’t cost eight thousand dollars.
Gum, which speaking of, I’m not a huge gum chewer (it kinda hurts my jaw) but in case of emergencies… you know. Also, I’ve had this little Tory Burch wallet thing for over a year now and it saves me. It can hold my most important cards and a bit of cash and it’s what I’ll grab to take into the grocery store since I’m there fifteen times a week. It’s awesome! Except for when I leave it in my pocket of my coat which is upstairs in a closet and don’t realize it until I’m checking out at another store. #fail
Random but necessary things: bobby pins (which go where all the missing socks go), a pair of kate spade studs (you know I’m obsessed), contact stuff (probably collecting bacteria so yes, I will throw it away, don’t harass me) and this bag that comes with tieks. It’s awesome because it folds into a little egg shape (see the first photo) but opens up as a tote in case you want to take off your heels/boots/uncomfortable shoes/etc. Or you can just use it as a… bag.
I obviously did away with all the loose receipts and what not, but added a few things in. Some pens (loving the sharpie liquid pencils!), a portable iphone/ipad charger (the orange square in the first photo), a little hand cream and most importantly, some chocolate covered almonds for snack purpose. THEE most important part of a purse, in my opinion.
What bag are you currently loving right now? I’m completely coveting this one (LOOK AT THE STUD COLOR!) but within a week I could already see how dirty it would be. Oh yeah, and I can probably do many other important things with that amount of money, like EAT.

Laura Mercier Hand Cream and anything sweet from Trader Joe’s should never be considered as ‘junk’.
Best fortune ever.
Oooh I love the MK case!! And the lip glosses and lip sticks too… I am exactly the same way!
loving this one

but any tory bag would do…
jess, you are gonna break me..first the sephora oucks, then the tiejs, now the bags??! love them all!!
oh wow – that bag is cute!
Why is it so fun spying on what people have in their bags?! I love it! I went through a dangerous period of buying about 1/2 dozen Jo Malone perfumesā¦..I seriously love them and couldn’t stop, lol! Haven’t tried the one in your bag yet, this could be dangerous. Fun post, always love your taste :)
So, I’m showing these pictures to my husband to prove to him that other ladies also have like 10 lipsticks in their purse at any time. He makes fun of me a lot, but I maintain it is normal.
Also, that Tarte Glamazon lippie – is it good? Worth buying?
i love the tarte lipsticks!! i may have mentioned this one in my favorites before but it is the color whimsy. i really like them – super smooth and don’t feel dry.
Flowerbomb is one of my favourite scents… and I love all the lip products you carry around! Haha

I am currently carrying the Rebecca Minkoff M.A.C. too and am obsessed. Just errrthang about it is perfection. That Rocco bag though – wow!
i’m seriously considering some tieks – do you love yours? do you have tory burch revas // which do you like better?
i do really love them! i don’t have the revas – honestly tieks are my first pair of flats… ever. i don’t even own other ones. i find them to be very comfortable but since i’m not super educated in the world of flats… it might just be me. i love ’em though.
I’m nosy! Love the peek inside.
Multiple lip colors are essential….you need to have choices! Also, love that purse!
I have about that many lip products in my bag too :) I cannot say enough good things about the Purse Perfector – I was a skeptic on the price but it has made the biggest difference in making sure I always have everything I need in easy reach, and makes it so easy to change out bags.
what is the purse perfector?!
The sharpie pens and pencils are a fave of mine too.
Totally agree with the gum chewing! I chew about 3 pieces a year -seriously. My mom & sister (who both chew him like crazy) just don’t get it. And I hate the film some types of gum leaves on my teeth.
when i saw the first picture, I was like, where are all the crumbled receipts??
the real life dump made me feel so much better.
ha! ugh, they are my life.
I always have an insane amount of lip products as well. I just keep using whatever lip products are in my vanity and throw it in my purse for touch ups and then when all of my favorite lip products are missing, I go and pull them all back out of my purse. When I did my what’s in my bag post, I was like um what is all of this stuff in my purse. Seriously?
My husband gives me crap for having so many lip products in my bag… so at BW3’s the other night while watching the playoffs, my friend and i pulled all ours out to see who had more. She beat me by one – she had 16, I had 15. So glad its not just me.
With you on the gum thing too – I find chewing gum tedious and your’re right – hurts my jaw! I go with Tic Tacs.
Oh I love Jo Malone! English Pear & Freesia AND the last time I went to Neiman’s ,they gave me 4 samples of it…snot bad.
I did get a big bottle for Christmas ,which is totally coveted.
My two girls are always taking my Burt’s, so I’m always buying it.
Fun post! Why is it so fascinating to see what is inside of someone else’s purse?!?!
What’s that contact thing and what do you use it for? Is it good for travel? Trig always loses his contact cases when we travel so I wonder if he’d do better with something like this.
Also, I don’t currently own a single lipstick. I need to remedy that after seeing your collection.
oh it’s just what i have to use for my contacts to sterilize them (it comes with clear care solution, i have really sensitive eyes and can’t use anything else) – it’s nothing special! it comes with every box of clear care because they need replaced often. i just usually have a spare on me!
LOL, I love the fortune!
Total RM fan here, but I’m a MAB girl. I love the look of the MAC and mini MAC, but prefer bags with handles over shoulder straps. With our mutual love of RM bags and Frye boots (and food), I feel like we could be friends. ;)
I love the fortune and the MK pencil case that you’re using to hold all the essentials….great idea for it! And that Tory B little card holder is perfect! Love the real life purse dump and seeing what you tote around. :)
Love this, my purse is a disaster! Also, I found my fortune cookie when Joe and I were out running errands the other day and I was approaching hangry status. I started rummaging through my purse to see if I had a snack and found the fortune cookie… mine said “I can read your mind… you should be ashamed” LOL.
omg ha! i almost texted you to see what yours said… :)
This is so cute. I love the series and your bag (obvi)! What kind of phone charger is it? Looking to get one.
I love these types of posts! And you are not alone on the lip products!
I’m sorry, I used to be a HUGE fan of your blog because of all the awesomely cheesy and delicious recipes. I have made many of your older ones and they are fantastic. I understand the need to get healthier which is why your recipes have evolved into being more health conscious, and, I admit, I have lost some interest in a lot of your newer recipes because they seem to always contain the same things, such as; brown butter and quinoa, but I still look forward to checking the site every day to see what the next recipe is.
That being said, coming to a post like “Whats in my handbag” is really disappointing. Especially when it has nothing to do with your new “Motivation Board Wednesdays.”
Sorry to be a critic but, less awesome recipes, and more blog posts about whats in your handbag is going to turn off some fans.
Best Regards,
Jen
hi jen – i would be lying if i said this comment didn’t kill me a little, but i want you guys to be honest with me so i appreciate it. my real life wednesday posts were never called “motivation board wednesdays” – they are called “real life” – in response to years of requests that i don’t sure enough of my personal life. i never meant for them to be centered around my vision board – the vision board is just what i happened to share that week.
i too felt recently that many of my recipes were becoming similar and it was insanely difficult to come up with new exciting things for the blog everyday the past two years and make all new recipes for the book on the side too. that’s one of the reasons i did away with my wednesday recipe – i want to share better quality instead of quantity. this way i hope to satisfy those that want more crumbs posts and those who wants better recipes.
i hope you will stick around – i know i can’t please everyone and that my recipes tend to be a reflection of what i love, which does include quinoa and brown butter. thank you for your feedback though!
I like the real life stuff! Keep it coming. Also, I like the healthier recipes :)
I respect Jen’s opinion but Jessica, I hope you don’t stop doing these posts because of this comment. I am one that has complained that I would love to see more lifestyle posts. You do post great recipes but I can find great recipes a lot of places. Please keep doing these!!
Totally agree with Cristy. Don’t stop these types of post because of one negative comment. You can’t please everyone. Love them! I think the majority loves them as well.
HOW is that even a fortune!?
I have been staring at the iridescent purse in an open chrome tab since you posted it last week. It is beautiful…..and ridiculous. i love it! And i love your Real Life Wednesdays. I seriously look forward to Tuesday things and this series (and the end of the month makeup posts- SO MANY NEW PRETTY THINGS!) when i sit down at my desk in the morning. Thank you for sharing a slice of your life and your excellent taste with us!
i know. it is so ridiculous i can’t stand it. i think i like looking at it more than i would like actually owning it? ha!
I love Rebecca Minkoff for almost a decade. I love that MAC/MAB – i want one but I want a Matinee more :)
Oh man, the more and more I see Rebecca Minkoff bags, the more I desperately want one. Also, Buxom lip gloss is awweessoommmee. I wanted every color.
I did a purse clean-out recently of three of the ones I use the most…TWENTY TWO lip colors later… I was wondering where all those went!
And I always restock the chocolate supply in my purse. Its a must
Love your bag & the one you want! I’ve been coveting both of them!
Kristin
Crumbs & Curls
Love this and all of your posts!! Checking out your blog is my favorite way to start the day ::
I haven’t even smelled that Jo Malone scent and I already want it. Dark amber and ginger lily? That is totally up my alley. (I feel like I’m too young to use that phrase, but whatever, I’m a dork.) Looove the Kate Spade studs, by the way.
I just got the maroon bag for Christmas and am in LOVE! It is such a pretty color, so you might need to have four of the same bag! ; ( And I’m glad you mentioned the random receipts at the end of the post because it’s completely shameful how many useless pieces of paper I have in my purse.
OMG I totally wanna do a bag-dump post on IG right now. Of course all of my stuff would fit in like, half the amount of space as yours, but I have a backpack that I use (it’s the cutest thing ever in life — besides my boyfriend) and it’s amaaaaaaaazing.
My bag is so boring – literally just my wallet and lip gloss. When I get sick of carrying it, I just put my driver’s licence and credit card in my bra! If I could fit a wallet into my skinny jeans, I would never carry a purse!
I just looked in my purse and I have six lipsticks and three chapsticks. It’s all normal :)
Love your purse & the MK pencil case — so cute!
I love, love, love the bag!!!!!!!!
i LOVE these kind of posts, i must be nosy too :)
really like that MK case & i also don’t like colour whispers x
These posts are my favourite! Where is the phone/ipad charger from? I’m thinking of getting one for my sister!
I love these posts! Please keep doing them. You talk about the best products!
I wish I had your handwriting. It’s so cute.
That’s where the bobby pins go!!! Thanks for solving this mystery for me. Sort of…because the socks and bobby pins are still missing.
I just wanted you to know that I love your blog! I just subscribed a few weeks ago and it’s fun seeing the variety of posts and pictures. I love your bag and everything in it! It makes me want to organize mine more because it is a hot mess…
If you use the lip scrub for smooth lips you can use your tooth brush. My electric does s wonderful job.
hi! do you mind telling me what kind of phone charger that is? i desperately need one!
I know where the socks go.
Years ago, my parents’ washer broke. The repair guy came to service it and he took the tub out … then reached in and pulled out probably 20 disgusting socks. When one overfills the washer, the socks float to the top and can actually run over the edge of the wash tub and end up on the outside of the tub.
I’m not sure how this works with modern front-load washers but the point is – the dryer’s been getting a bad rep for years when the whole time, it was the washer.
The solution, BTW, is to either not cram your washer full (yeah right) or wash your socks in a big lingeree bag so they don’t float to the top.
