on life lately.
It’s looked like this.
Minus the weekend, which was super sunny and pretty and perfect.
Here’s some random stuff we did!
I taught a burger class to lots of invisible internet friends (who were clearly visible) and burnt an entire pan of oven fries, cut into a moldy red pepper and made a blender smoke. It really makes no sense because I was just mixing up cookies and ice cream. Otherwise, it was excellent and my favorite was the cheddar burger with bacon and mushrooms and mustard aioli on pretzel buns. Because mustard aioli + pretzel buns. OMG. Do it.
I realize the above doesn’t look like it has anything to do with burgers but it was the topping for some tilapia burgers. Yes yes. Which totally WORKED on hawaiian rolls. You should probably try that too.
The rest of the weekend we did father’s day and all things birthday related because it was my mom’s BDAY and my cousin who is like my sister and also my best friend’s BDAY. Uh huh. Riddle me that.
We had tons of cake.
Basically the best of both worlds with a burnt almond torte AND this chocolate explosion cake which you see me talk about every summer because it’s utterly ridiculous. It’s so rich that you can barely even finish a piece and only have it like once a year.
But now that I’m staring at the photo, I want a slice right now for breakfast. Hmmpf.
Yes. Those are all different kinds of chocolate mousse and whatnot inside the cake. Kill.me.now.
We are actually making her birthday a weeklong celebration and last night had makeshift sangria and perfect pizza and this coming weekend have the funnest (yep, said it) dinner planned. We are usually at the beach this week, but well, we’re not and it’s quite depressing (so deprived) so we’re making up for it! Brats.
I’ve been a reading freak this past week. I finished Delancey and loved it, but not surprising since I love all things Molly writes.
I read the Matchmaker and oh my gah, cried my eyes out at the end even though I’m not a crier and could not put it down. I think it’s one of my favorite Elin Hilderbrand books period. And my emotions were only heightened as I read her huffington post article and my heart broke. Things were not made better when I caught Beaches on HBO sunday morning as I was getting ready. Ugh.
Right now I’m about three quarters of the way through love with a chance of drowning, which was recommended to my by Kristen. I am really liking it a lot. Next on my list is all fall down. Best reading months ever.
In other news, I can’t get over iced macchiatos with extra drizzle, I did make the egg salad yesterday (eggs, greek yogurt, bone suckin mustard, pickles, chives, a crapload of seasoning) and proceeded to eat it with salt and vinegar chips ON the sandwich which was toasted of course, I found an outdoor patio table at Restoration Hardware that has a fire in the center a la Real World circa ten years ago and I need it in my life despite the fact that it costs more than a year of groceries (sad face) and I can’t stop writing run on sentences. I should do something about that.

I know the polite thing to do is read the blog post before commenting but I’m stuck in this delicious cake!!! Yum!!!
Oh I hear ya on the rain… it’s been looking similar here too. And that cake… i have no words. Amazing!
I can’t believe I haven’t read Matchmaker yet!! I’m in the middle of The Good House – just finished The Dinner which left me feeling weird. Such a disturbing ending! I just added a few of yours to my Kindle list because yes, READ ALL THE BOOKS.
isn’t the dinner so… weird?! gah.
Never stop writing run-on sentences. Just never do.
OK…thanks for the heads-up on the Matchmaker. I’m not sure this “cry at everything” girl can handle it. Right now, I’m reading You Should Have Known and can’t put it down.
even though i cried at the end (it’s not totally sad, but is) i still think it’s a nice light read for summer!
WHERE did you get that Chocolate Explosion Cake? I have to get it for our anniversary this weekend!
cake is from here! http://www.jennuinecakes.com/
the bad news is that many times they want more than a week notice on the cake… but try today if you want it for this weekend!
Ooh adding matchmaker to my list. I AM a crier, so…I suppose I will need a box of Kleenex by my side, no?
it’s not too bad! just at the end. ;)
Now when you say seasoning on that potato salad – can you be more specific??? :) Definitely want to make that!
i didn’t measure anything – salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika!
thank you for making me feel like the most special person every and my gifts. thank you for participating in the week long birthday celebration.
I feel the need to read “love with a chance of drowning” because I’m scared to death of water. I’d like to meet the man who’d convince ME to hop a sailboat across the ocean! HA! I just hope I don’t get seasick while reading it!!
haha you do need to read it then!
I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer at age 27; we were trying to get pregnant. If I’m able to have children, we’ll have to wait at least 5 more years before pursuing a pregnancy. So, I’ve decided that I can only read happy go-lucky stories that end well and don’t include the C-word. Doubt I’ll be reading “Matchmaker” but if you have some happy-happy-joy-joy books, I’d love to hear about them!
oh my gosh – i will be thinking of you! how are you doing? also yes, while most of this book is happy happy joy joy, the ending sort of isn’t (but is at the same time, i don’t know) – i’d stay away too. you might like catching air or attachments??
Sorry to pipe in here, but I wanted to sugest Sarah Jio’s books — they whole have happy, romantic endings — and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. <–HYSTERICAL. Sending good thoughts your way.
I just saw your comment and had to reply.. A couple weeks back I was watching the news, and they had a segment on about young women who have breast cancer and want to get pregnant after recovery. They were talking about a drug called Zoladex.. I don’t remember all the specific details, but the jist was that women are more likely to get pregnant later if their cancer was treated with Zoladex. I wrote down the name of the drug for some reason, and thought of it when I read your comment. Thought it might be worth looking into!
You can’t say your week was dull, that’s for sure! (BTW-love the cake)
Oh damn, look at that cake!!! I would love a slice. There is a bakery here in Charleston, Village Bakery, and they make a chocolate cake that has a brownie base, then two layers of chocolate cake layered with chocolate mousse, then it’s all iced in chocolate buttercream with chocolate ganache swirls on top. Ridiculous!!
You made me want egg salad the other day, so that’s what my lunch was today. Egg, hefty dollop of real mayo, squirt of yellow mustard, dash dill, salt, pepper, all on a homemade toasted bun. Heaven and took me back to the age of 8. :)
iced caramel macchiatos with extra drizzle = summer perfection. :)
Love hearing about books to read! I just finished these that were good: Still Missing (SUPER intense at times not a “easy” beach/summer read), Reconstructing Amelia, and Wild (Reese Witherspoon is in the movie version coming out next later this year and an Oprah pick, need I say more?)
And that cake made my mouth water….YUM
I just read delancy on my flight home from Hawaii and loved it too! And now I’m craving pizza in a bad way.
Totally noting all these for my next bookstore trip.. I just read Goodnight June by Sarah Jio – whose writing I adore – and it was fab.
I made your tilapia burgers last week with the mango salsa and chipotle crema that you use on your shrimp burgers (which I’m also obsessed with). Then made them again last night with watermelon salsa. My new, go-to, light, summer meal (even got my boyfriend to eat them inside a lettuce wrap…)!
Dang it – I was hoping there was a recipe for the chocolate explosion cake. It looks fantastic!
that cake looks delicious! and those books sound goood, putting them on my list!
xo, cheyenne
That egg salad sounds amazing!! Pickles taste so great in them!

I really enjoy the book suggestions. And I love the run on sentences. I like your posts like this because you write like I think, and that makes me feel sane. Or that I am, at least, not the only one that jumps from thought to thought like this. Also, that egg salad recipe sounds delightful!
I totally needed some new summer reads, thanks for the recommendations :)
I totally DIE over the drizzle on the iced macchiatos!! Kills me every time. SO SO SO GOOD.
And I’m reading Matchmaker right this very second so I’m bracing myself for the tears!!
I loved Delancey. Another good one is the good luck of right now.
OMG. My husband and I make your tilapia burgers ALL THE TIME and I have never thought to use Hawaiian rolls. Game changer!
I had the Beaches on VHS growing up, and I wore that thing out. I was a really weird 10 year old.
i just have to say that one of my biggest regrets is not eating more of prantl’s burnt almond torte before i got the ole celiac diagnosis in 2010 :( because i am so selfless, i bought one the other day and took it to my husband’s work bc he loves it and i can’t help him eat it. ok, that’s not totally true…i really just wanted to smell it again haha. it is THE BEST.
