life with max: four weeks in.
Four weeks is so bittersweet!
He is such a LITTLE MAN. He looks like a little elderly dude. I love it.
I can’t believe how much he is growing – I have always heard people say how newborns change every day and was like, yeah… whatever. But OMG it is so true. I swear something about him changes constantly. Even from morning to night. I’m struggling so much with him growing up already – I obviously want him to thrive and grow but it’s killing me how fast it is going.
And the worst part is that I’m still sitting here and straight up savoring every single moment. I still haven’t had to do much work or photograph a thing, aside from some writing and previous commitments that I had scheduled. I spend every waking moment with him (and let’s be honest, every half-sleeping moment too) and just want time to slooooow down. Broken record.
If I could say one thing about week four, aside from it being bittersweet, it would have to be about how GOOD I feel. I am so happy. I thought I was happy the previous three weeks, but now I feel so so so genuinely happy and relaxed without insane horomone surges. I am tired but used to it. I know this sounds completely nuts, but I actually look forward to waking up with him in the middle of the night. There is something about snuggling him and feeding him in the dark that is just precious and I know it is going to fly by. I will never get it back again.
This boy is so funny. I find myself laughing at him everyday – the faces he makes, the sounds he makes, he cracks us both up. Eddie’s favorite time is first thing in the morning, like around 4:30 when I feed him and he changes his diaper and Max does all of these wild stretches like he is getting ready to run a marathon. His face is just to die for.
Um, on that same note, he stretches the same way Eddie does. Like sometimes… I can’t believe how identical they are. Eddie was napping last week and so was Max – and they were in the SAME POSITION. I mean, it’s crazy enough that he looks so much like Eddie, but they do the same things. I just lose it. They sleep in the same tangled up way, they wake up and act like zombies for 10 minutes, they make the same faces. I mean, I just can’t handle it.
I also told Eddie that I now have a glimpse of what he would look like if he gained 50lbs and it went straight to his cheeks, chins and stomach. Max is getting so chubby and I can’t deal. It’s the cutest thing in the universe.
OMG. Am I the most annoying parent ever? UGH.
My nicknames for this little chunk of love are ever changing. I call him every form of “nugget” that exists.
Nug. Nuggy. Chub nugget. Love nugget. Cuddle nugget. Chunk nugget. My dad even calls him his grand nugget. When I get sick of using nugget, I ended up calling him my little squish face or something of the sort. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHO I AM.
I don’t think he’s impressed.
At four weeks…
1. He is REALLY using his voice. He was before, but now it’s nonstop. He is always squealing and squeaking and, well… talking. I swear he sounds like a pterodactyl. The dinosaur. Like he came right out of Jurassic Park. I call him my little pterodactyl all the time.
2. Eddie and I are discussing certain things daily that we swore we’d NEVER discuss. I think you know what I mean. No fear: I will never be that person that puts that ish on facebook. Gross.
3. In a sleep deprived state I bought those stickers that say 1 month, 2 month, etc to stick on his outfit and do photos. I got the stickers the day he turned one month old and… apparently I ordered the girl ones. Hot pink and purple. Not on purpose. I don’t even remember. Who knew they had girl and boy ones?!
4. Our house looks like a bomb went off in it any given day of the week. A newborn bomb? It is SUCH a wreck. Just yesterday, I didn’t make it downstairs until 3PM. We were up at 7 and between cleaning, feeding and events that transpired that required multiple showers, I made it down the stairs late afternoon. What is this life? On Monday it took me six interrupted hours to get the kitchen completely clean. SIX HOURS.
5. I have become the person that has put “shower” on their to do list, and not just so I feel good about crossing something off. It’s so I hopefully actually remember to shower.
6. Uh, the circles under my eyes are unreal. Like they are so dark from sleep deprivation that one day I thought I had mascara smudged under my eyes. UM NO. It was just skin. Hi concealer, my bestie. It’s true though: you get used to it.
7. I remember nothing. Like nothing. Like not even five minutes after it has happened. I am known for my killer memory! This is hurting my game.
Ah well… this little face. I’ll stop now so you don’t need to listen to me repeat myself over and over (and over). I JUST WANT TO EAT HIM UP.

YAY SO CUTE! Can I borrow him? Or just have him? (Ovaries = exploding.)
so. precious.
such a mini eddie!
I love those beautiful blues he’s rocking! :)
I love these posts!! My baby boy was born the same day and I have pretty much identical feelings about everything :)
So sweet reading these updates. We called my son pterodactyl, too, because of his funny little sounds. Your baby is SO cute! Congrats.
Aaaah, he is so, so adorable! I can’t stand that little puff of gorgeous hair and those chubby legs.. too cute!
YAY baby post!!!! I love him and his little faces! Love these posts and especially your pictures!
(PS You crack me up about the Facebook posts.. my husband made me swear I will never post about our child going to the bathroom for the first time and all that nonsense LOL)
He’s sosososososososooo cute. And yes, looking more and more like your hubby every day. I’m not having children, so keep these posts up and I’ll live vicariously through you. I love how much you love him. :D
Love this post!! I have two kiddos (a boy who is 2.5 and a baby girl who is 4 months old). I love that you are honest….and yes, you do get used to it. The thing about the memory, or lack thereof, had me rolling. I am known for my sharp memory too and the first few weeks postpartum I forgot everything. It is slowly coming back to me but I seriously started to wonder if I was suffering some kind of early onset Alzheimers. The struggle is real….but so worth it right?! :)
I love that you are in love with Max!!!!!!!
By the way, I used to call my Kids, “Little Poot or just Poot” You know, the sound they made when “passing gas”
I would say the daily conversations about baby poop get better but they haven’t yet. Amelia is 9 months old (WHAT?!?? NO, I seriously can’t take it) and my husband and I still discuss her poop every.single.day. In detail. It’s ridiculous. The shower going on the to-do list is something I did too and that does eventually get better.
Your posts make me miss my newborn Amelia, especially because I was in such a funk and my brain was so foggy for so long that I did not savor every moment (I do not do well when I don’t get enough sleep). Between your posts and Amelia being so super old now it’s kind of giving me baby fever. I loved the baby stretches and velociraptor sounds the most and she hasn’t done them in a long time! We have too many nicknames for her as well – nugget, bug, Mila, Milabean, sweet pea, baby bear, boo-boo – we just keep adding on as she gets older. Enjoy your little sweet pea!!
Haha I think my little girl looks exactly like my husband when she sleeps too, same expression! I love the little baby stretches & hilarious noises. Mine’s not a “talker” really but does a bunch of funny grunts and noises when she sleeps and eats. She’s 9 weeks. Growing up WAY too fast! Haha
I love these posts! Makes me look forward to what I have coming up – I’m pregnant with my first (a girl) who’s due in 19 days. Not that I’m counting down or anything..
As a non-mom, I love these posts, the pictures, and the glimpse into life as a new family of three. :) PS He really is just the cutest little old man.
adorable, and love his black and red plaid
Aaaa these posts make me so damn happy (and teary-eyed) Max is the cutest! thank you for sharing the joy x
Ditto!
I have no words..he’s perfect!
Gah, I just love your overwhelming love for him! I love these posts! He is so freakin’ adorable.
Welcome to momma-hood, where your memory takes a backseat to all else, your hair falls out for a while (if yours hasn’t yet, good for you! And BTW, it won’t fall out forever if it has started), and you can’t get enough of the squeaks, squeals and funny faces (but you’ll quickly get more than enough of the ish to last a lifetime OMG how can he be doing that again??!). He’s adorable. My little man, now 2.5, also sleeps just like his daddy, is crabby in the morning like his daddy, and will eat a mushroom in any form like his daddy. = )
I love his expressions! So cute ^_^.
you should mark this and read it when he’s like 2 or 15 and all you are wishing is that the terrible twos or bad teenage years would hurry up and be over : )
He is so sweet. I love reading these posts <3
Jess, this is adorable, he is adorable, and YOU are adorable!!! Love reading about your new life and new chub nugget (that was my fav). Thank you for sharing!!
I’m always a few days late to these posts! Again, you basically sound exactly how I felt 2 months ago. The first month is so special and yet so focused on survival. The second and third months get FUN. They start smiling, talking, cooing, and actually interacting. It’s like once they get some head control, a whole new world opens up. I can’t wait to hear about Max doing all these things. It’s all bittersweet – it’s amazing when they do something new but at the same time, I’m like “noooo, stay teeny forever!” Hah. Max is SUCH an adorable baby. I love his eyes and serious little faces. Maybe our babies can be pretend internet friends like you and I? :)
You have your very own Face Baby!!!
That is so funny you call your son a pterodactyl! Mine is almost 4 months old and I’ve been calling him that since he found his voice. Love it!!!
I love your weekly write-ups, it helps me remember so many of the same little things and emotions that I felt in the beginning at home with my little Max (who is now 6 months). He was a vocal little dino-boy too! Thank you for sharing your heartfelt thoughts and continue to enjoy your nugget time!
He is just GORGEOUS! I love when babies stretch, so so sweet.
Too much cuteness! He’s adorable. Really. And I love these posts. My daughter is a year old and my son is 3 and a half. I remember feeling like this when they were so brand new. It really is an amazing time. You are so lucky to get the chance to really savor it. My maternity leave wasn’t the best ever as I had to work from home for most of the 8 weeks I got. BUT. The time I did have at home with both of them was so wonderful. These posts really bring back those memories for me. :)
I love reading these updates because my little girl just turned 6 months old, and has changed SO much from the early days. It’s impossible to wrap my brain around how she is already so different (I just had to remove all the 3-6 months clothes from her drawers because they are too small already!). Everything you wrote is spot on to how it was for me too- I found that I could reasonable accomplish 1 thing per day, and many days that thing was to shower. At 6 months, I could accomplish more, but now I just want to snuggle and play with her whenever I’m not at work!
Enjoy this time with baby Max, it really goes by sooooooooo fast. My son, also named Max, is almost 9 months and reading your descriptions of all of the noises and stretches that babies make/do brings me right back to that time. And now he’s an 18lb chunker who I love more than life itself. There really is nothing quite like it and while everyone says your life will change you never *really* understand, even though we’re all like yeah duh babies change things, but seriously…it’s almost like you’ve finally met the YOU that you were supposed to be all along now that you have your baby
anyway…..! your Max is precious
#2, omg yes. It’s just, yeah. You end up talking about it nonstop. ><
#4, the bomb has gone off all over our house. There's something of the baby's in every single room.
#6, yeeeesh. So true. It's so unfortunate but so worth it!!
“He looks like a little elderly dude.” I literally laughed out loud when I read that!!!!! Then looked at the picture again, and laughed some more!!!!!!
His faux hawks get me every time!
I am just now catching up on all these posts and they are just. THE BEST. I swear, I can’t get enough of reading about you and this little guy. His faces are priceless, and your stories make my day. In all seriousness, they also give me a comfort and excitement that we’ll be able to weather the storm of baby whenever we get to that point of our lives. Thank you for these wonderful posts, Jess <3!
