Brown Sugar Sriracha Sesame Popcorn.
New year, new snacks.
Over the last year, Eddie and I have become serial popcorn eaters. It’s weird, because neither of us cared for popcorn much in previous years – however I didn’t hate going to the movies and doing some damage on that disgustingly wonderful buttered bag of emotions.
Pumps of butter, what?!
It’s always been a staple because my dad would make it every week (on the stovetop with only salt) when I was growing up. But it wasn’t until last year around this time, probably when I accidentally on purpose ended up eating popcorn for dinner, that it became a snacky habit.
So. Our go-to nightly popcorn is popped on the stove in coconut oil and covered with this black truffle sesame salt that we are obsessive over. Ridiculously good.
But if we have some time, i.e. it’s the weekend – I love making homemade seasonings and toppings. I even bought Eddie a popcorn seasoning set for Christmas, with mostly selfish reasons that I could taste and learn how to recreate the flavors at home. Millennial moves?
Tonight, I’m planning on making no short of three popcorns while we watch the Golden Globes because 1. I’m a crazy person but also because 2. it is my favorite thing at the moment and isn’t even covered in chocolate. Which is a massive win.
I’m not even much of a heat lover and this has become my new DREAM popcorn. It has everything I want when it comes to snacktime: a hint of sweetness, a touch of heat and toasty, nutty flavor. You make your own homemade microwave (!yes!) popcorn and drizzle it with a flavorbomb mixture. Then cover it in sesame seeds. Then eat the whole bowl.
Sounds like the best plan to me.
Brown Sugar Sriracha Sesame Popcorn
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup corn kernels
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons sriracha
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
Instructions
- Combine the kernels and coconut oil and place them in a brown paper bag. Fold the top down a few times so it’s secure, then microwave for 2 minutes to 2.5 minutes, or until the kernels are popped. Open the bag and pour the kernels in a large bowl to cool slightly.
- In a bowl, whisk together the sugar, sriracha and butter. Place in the microwave for 20 seconds, then remove and whisk well to combine. Drizzle the mixture over the popcorn in layers – I like to drizzle, then toss well, drizzle, then toss well, until all the sriracha is used and the popcorn is coated. Sprinkle the sesame seeds on and drizzle the toasted sesame oil with one more toss. Serve!

Oh gosh am I excited to try this recipe. My dad makes stove top popcorn with just salt about every night. I think he picked up this habit from his mom and I in turn picked it up from him. I like mine with nutritional yeast, garlic powder and dill though.
I love popcorn and still have tons of puff corn at home…Definitely gonna try your recipe!
the past couple months i’ve been eating popcorn with just extra virgin olive oil and salt. so easy to make at home, even easier if you buy it from trader joe’s. speaking of which, have you tried their sriracha chips? they’re not particularly sriracha-y or spicy, but they have that same sweet/spicy vibe as your popcorn (:
YUM!! I need to try this next. Love the sesame oil factor.
AMAZING! With all the award shows coming up this is for sure happening!

Oh this is amazing. I love doing popcorn in the microwave and this looks like the perfect way to top it off. YUM. Also love that I can totally make it during a commercial (this IS Golden Globe snackage, yes?). You are the best!

WOWSA. I got an air-popper for Christmas so we have been enjoying freshly-popped corn with coconut oil and nutritional yeast on a nightly basis. Can’t wait to try this goodness out.
It looks and sounds delicious! Thank you so much for sharing!
This popcorn looks amazing! It’s definitely going to be our treat for family night tomorrow night!

I skipped the Globes this year to attempt to watch 50 Shades of Grey and I didn’t last 10 minutes. I wish I had made some popcorn!
Shoot this would have been the perfect trashy snack for the golden globes! Brown sugar butter on popcorn was my favorite in college when the calories didn’t count ?
Perfect way to warm up in front of the fire place with a good book or a great movie this winter.
Love it! And I also love that you accidentally on purpose ended up eating popcorn for dinner, that’s the best! This flavor is one I’d have never dreamed of but now I’m dying to try it!
I enjoy popcorn every now and then, but I’ve never been a huge popcorn lover. Maybe it’s because I’ve never made it at home? I have a feeling that these would disappear fast if I had a bowl in front of me!
Made this last night, and am sad to report that all other forms of popcorn are now dead to me. I can only eat this version, now and forever.
I think I just died and went to popcorn heaven. This is a mind-blowingly delicious combo that I can’t wait to try!
We have a huge movie theater style popcorn maker at my office (I know), but I’m just not really into the fake flavored powders sprinkled on oily popcorn. But this? THIS is happening the second I get home (courtesy of some kernels “borrowed” from previously mentioned popcorn station…)!
Say what?! This sounds AMAZING. New favourite (and I haven’t even tried it yet).
I wanted to try this last night, but I realized I didn’t have the ingredients. So I substituted honey for brown sugar and chipotle tobasco for sriracha. It was amaZING.
My Sriracha-obsessed sister would go crazy over this stuff! I’m definitely making it for our next girl’s night! ☺️

Made this last night, and while the flavor was INSANELY DIVINE, the popcorn got super soggy and sad. I followed the directions/proportions exactly; any ideas on how to keep it from happening again? I refuse to give up!
That was my first thought…that it would be soggy…thought about popping it in the oven for a bit to dry it out.
