Chocolate Milk Iced Mochas.
We’ve come a looonnnnng way baby.
I’m now a coffee fiend (I MADE IT!) who desperately looks forward to that morning cup, even getting excited to go to bed just because of coffee in the morning.
It’s the verrrry little things.
Also, it’s miracle that I’m still married because Eddie 100% still loathes coffee, especially the smell of it. If I ever want him out of the house, I just make two cups. Works like a charm.
These adorable coffee ice cube balls?! I love them.
I found the molds at my local grocery store and they make every single morning better. Iced coffee weather for liiiiife.
Nearly five years ago I posted THIS about not loving coffee, but wanting to love coffee, but liking coffee ice cream… so making my coffee taste like coffee ice cream. It wouldn’t be until about two years later when I REALLY started drinking coffee and enjoying it sparingly, and then two more after that when I became slightly dependent on coffee (oh hi zero sleeping child) even when said coffee was black.
Which was practically blasphemy in my world.
It’s not a regular occurrence but it certainly happens in moments of desperation.
So! I have new favorite iced coffee recipe. I obviously still love all those homemade syrups (who wouldn’t?!) but for a quickie mocha at home, this is what I’m doing.
My new and improved semi-high maintenance mocha includes:
vanilla powder in my cold brew. ADDICTIVE. So wonderful and delicious
and… wait for it…
chocolate milk. Chocolate freaking milk! I can’t even tell you the last time I drank chocolate milk, but it was was probably like seven years ago when I bought it “to be healthy” because it’s a great post workout recovery drink. Ha. HAHAHAHAHA.
Right right.
Anyhoo.
I drizzled in some chocolate syrup (trader joe’s version) here – a little on the bottom (it looks like a TON but theses are super skinny tall glasses) and a bit around the rim. I even like it without the chocolate syrup and in day to day life, usually skip it because I’d rather eat bacon, cheese, peanut butter chocolate spoons, pizza and burgers if I want them. You know?
But on the weekend? Give me all the chocolate.
Plus it saves me like a billion and two dollars at Starbucks.
Add it to the list for this weekend: coffee plus chocolate milk. It’s a dream.
Chocolate Milk Iced Mochas.
Ingredients
- 1 cup coarsely ground coffee
- 2 tablespoons vanilla powder
- 3 1/2 cups cold, preferably filtered water
- 3 to 4 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- 1 cup cold chocolate milk
- coffee ice cubes
Instructions
- The night before, add the coffee grinds and vanilla powder to the bottom of your french press or to a large measuring cup. Cover with the cold water. Place the in fridge (covered! or with the fresh press top, not pressed) overnight, for at least 8 to 12 hours.
- In the morning, press the coffee in the press or pour it over a coffee filter (or 2) into a larger bowl or pitcher. Fill a glass with a bit of chocolate syrup on the bottom and (coffee) ice cubes. Pour in your coffee and then fill the rest of the glass with chocolate milk. Drizzle extra chocolate on the rim. I’ve also topped this with coconut whipped cream!
- Note: I do have a nespresso that i use religiously and if I’m pressed for time or really craving cold brew, I’ll sometimes just brew that over ice. Slightly watered down but good enough for me!
Did you make this recipe?

I appreciate you so much!
buuuut I want, like, seven cups.

Love this! Must make it I never liked coffee until my early 20’s and then my real love developed when I was 25 and my son was born. I couldn’t live without coffee after that — but I never learned to like coffee ice cream!
seriously! and crazy because i liked coffee ice cream from the time i was a kid! prob was a nostalgic thing though.
GASP! There aren’t words, there just aren’t words……… Thanks for saving my Thursday so entirely with these!
I also wanted to become a coffee drinker, so I forced myself to be a coffee drinker. It wasn’t that I didn’t like it, it was that I didn’t need it. Truth be told, I still don’t NEED it (I woke up at 5 this morning and am just now drinking coffee) but I love love love the taste so much and the boost of caffeine doesn’t hurt either. PS this look TO DIE FOR.
i hear ya, i didn’t need it either until i had a baby!
Omg, I’m the same way. Jason and I are like ‘we can’t wait to go to sleep because COFFEE in the morning!’ hahaha it’s a thing. Love it.
Stumptown (Portland) makes a cold brew coffee with chocolate milk that they sell in cartons… And it’s amazing!

Yes! It’s delicious. Have you had their nitro brew? Amazing — straight up outta the can!
i have tried that!! it’s so good.
I adore your photography but your messy drink photos stress me out like whoa. lol!
haha you aren’t the only one!
That’s so funny – I’ve always felt the same way!
I need this to become part of my morning routine – and those iced coffee balls – I die – so chic!
Well for those who are not yet coffee addicts I think this will do the trick.
OMG- delicious. I am an iced coffee FIEND this time of year! Also unrelated- your pictures are always amazing and perfectly “imperfectly” styled, like spills and ice cubes perfectly surrounding the cups… But is it weird that it gives me anxiety?! Haha like “how much does she have to clean up when she is done with these shoots?!” Or is that just my weird, neurotic, Type A mind? ?
haha, not just you – lots of people mention it! but the clean up isn’t too terrible, i make sure those are the very last shots and then boom, done!
It’s so slowly becoming iced coffee season and I.AM.PUMPED! Addicted to grounds + cinnamon to make cold brew. And obvi syrups; they’re so much more flavourful in cold brew than hot coffee, I find.
love adding cinnamon too!
STOP EVERYTHING. my life has just changed. amazing!
I need more information about this vanilla powder….$69 for 4oz seems expensive…is it life altering? Is it a gazillion times better than vanilla extract?
whoa! that price is insane – i honestly didn’t see it when i looked because i paid $30 for mine on amazon (which i still thought was super pricey, and i just looked, $33 to be exact), there must have been a high demand or something for them to raise that price? it is really awesome but i would NOT pay $69 for it. and now i’m looking on their website and that price is high too. http://www.sunfood.com/vanilla-powder-4oz-raw.html
i have no idea why it’s so high right now!
soooooo…i want to make this. Scratch that…NEED to make this…would you just put the equal measurement of vanilla extract into the drink if you don’t brew with the vanilla powder???
Vanilla shortage driving up prices.
Yep, I want to make these…Pinned!!
Hahaha you crack me up! I too get excited for bed, just to wake up and have my cup of coffee! I legit have to cut myself off at 9 AM or else I’d just drink it all day! My husband is the SAME way too!!
I drink iced coffee all year long! Love the idea of using chocolate milk. Can’t believe I never thought of that!
This is BLOWING MY MIND. How do you come up with this stuff?! I totally love it.
I’ve never bought vanilla powder before. Is it super concentrated? Compared to vanilla bean seeds? To which I am totally addicted BTW – I just posted a Honey Vanilla Peanut Butter that I made last week and already finished O_O oops!
I’m currently where you were 5 years ago (“not loving coffee, but wanting to love coffee, but liking coffee ice cream”), and this recipe looks like it’s just what i need to continue enjoying coffee as a dessert but also progressing towards actually liking coffee. Can’t wait to give this a try!

I’m the same as you, always loved coffee ice cream but it’s only in the last few years that I’ve started to like actual coffee; I still can’t handle it black though, the milkier the better, bonus points if it is iced, bonus bonus points if it is iced AND chocolatey so these chocolate milk iced mochas are essentially my coffee nirvana!
Try making this drink by shaking it instead of stirring (you can just put a smaller cup inside your regular cup and give it a couple good shakes). It really makes a huge difference – it gets a little frothy and the flavors merge better. Might sound odd, but I swear the difference is noticeable.
I was a barista for years in a coffee shop that served this as a signature drink – so I’ve made and drunk it a ton – we called it a Mocha Joe :)
I enjoy coffee but only occasionally, but I love chocolate milk. This looks like a delicious combo!!

Coffee for the win! I drink 4 (+) cups a day and i’m so beyond the fiend barrier. If anyone messes with my brew…just sayin’
Oh my gosh. This looks to die for! Such a yummy treat for warm weather
http://www.sprinklesandsaturdays.com
I normally drink my coffee black (partially because I drink so much I would probably become diabetic if I added sugar…) but this looks so good, I might have to mix up my morning routine, plus I’m pretty sure a chocolate will make any morning more bearable!
Oh my. This has my name written all over it! Are you sure you didn’t mean to call it “Rebecca’s Chocolate Milk Iced Mocha”? I feel like that would be appropriate. ;-)

yum! this looks amazing! I live for my nespresso too! I love your round ice cubes – so fun!!
AHHHHHH…..Mazing! YUM! I have a similar come to me Coffee situation. Loved coffee ice cream LONG before I’d touch a cup of the brew. Still don’t like a straight up cup o joe, but flavored iced coffee and Caramel Macchiatos …. Mmmmmm…
Dumb question; how do you make your coffee ice cubes? I had just taken brewed coffee and put it in an ice tray and froze it. Something like that? I don’t have a coffee press just a normal coffee machine and I don’t drink it all that often (I’m too lazy to get up any earlier than is necessary on workdays) so to cold brew it I just take ground coffee and water and let it sit overnight in the fridge?! Sounds too easy! What would the difference be between doing that and brewing the coffee and putting over lots of ice to cool it?
Hoping to make the Thai Coconut Curry Shrimp bowls this weekend! (My sister bought coconut oil to use on her hair and it does say food grade and all that stuff, is that the same type of coconut oil as you use in this recipe?) Thank you for all your fun posts!
That coffee looks AMAZING but honestly, I want to smash my face into that full cup of coconut whipped cream.
Eeeeek, I’m throwing a brunch bridal shower this summer and am doing a tricked out iced coffee bar. I had already decided on a having fixins for Vietnamese iced coffee and was looking for another choice. This will be it!
So if Eddie doesn’t like coffee, did you have to drink all of those?! (as if that would be anything other than amazing although also slightly electrifying with all the caffeine!) These look delicious. I have a cute little bialetti (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Bialetti-Stovetop-Espresso-Patented/dp/B000CNY6UK) that I use to make espresso for lattes every morning, but have never had an iced coffee drink turn out tasting well at all, and I’m not sure why. This looks EASY and delicious! Must give it a try!! Side note- your little ice cube balls are so cute!
YAAASSSSS, please! Cold brew for life! I’ve been using dark chocolate almond milk in mine as a cheater’s mocha when I work the early shift (seriously, why is anyone up at 4am?). So, soooooo good and just a little bit healthy? I also am obsessed with my AeroPress coffee maker. It does 1-4 servings at a time, is super quick, requires next to no cleanup (rinse and dry…no washing!), and makes just enough for me. My husband is not a coffee drinker, and I’m actually afraid of drinking coffee every day and becoming addicted. Weird, I know.

I’ll be trying this ASAP. What a great idea – yum! Your coffee ice cubes would make a great blended coffee drink too. Once I get some new ice cube trays, I might play around with this option!

I absolutely do this with my coffee too! If I’m feeling like I need an extra boost to hold me over I add a packet of Carnation instant breakfast instead of chocolate syrup.

Hi Jessica. My son and I have only tried cold brew once using a French press and Starbucks French roast coffee beans… What brand and flavor coffee bean do you use for cold brew? Adding chocolate milk will probably make any kind taste good lol
