Tuesday Things.
1. I have decided that I like the whole rolled ice cream concept with fruit only and not chocolate or peanut butter or caramel or whatever. Thinking this probably makes me 95 years old inside.
2. Um, mini pizza COOKIES?! Where has this idea been all my life?
3. In a major first world problem last week, I had an aisle seat on the plane and there was a stunning sunset out the window AND a rainbow. A freaking rainbow!! Outside of a plane! Like, in way up high sky. Hello, are you thinking what I’m thinking? Instagram pic. You can imagine my stress since I was unable to get a photo of said rainbow + sunset in the sky. Blogger’s worth nightmare? I think so.
4. That got me to thinking: what do you think the chances are that you fly on a plane with someone you don’t know, twice? Or multiple times? Because I SWEARÂ I saw someone that I recognized from a flight two years ago. It’s a long story.
5. Oh my gosh. these incredible life lessons by Anthony Bourdain. So good.
6. I’ve been drinking my coffee with no sweetener at all lately (mostly because it makes me feel like death, something about the caffeine + sugar + dairy is just NO, especially in the afternoon) but after three weeks I still MISS it! Because I still want my coffee to taste like ice cream. So what’s your favorite daily coffee order? Halllp me. Now that I’ve got myself addicted.
7. Eeeep I am getting SO into Masters of Sex, I loved the few twists it took this week. I definitely feel like I’m the only one watching it though. Did you see previews for the The Affair? It fast forwards THREE years after last year’s finale. Wah.
8. I’m big on brainstorming by myself but also in a team, and love these tips on how to do it better. That’s how I come up with all of my recipe ideas.
9. You know, just to follow up on my Tom Hanks obsession from last week. WHY COULDN’T THIS BE ME.

Throwing a non-sweet coffee suggestion out there–Trader Joe’s coconut creamer. A Tbsp or two in my morning cups make it taste creamy and fancy, but it’s totally not sweet. You might like it!
What’s that you say about rolled ice cream? No peanut butter and chocolate?! WHAT?!? At least we can agree that rolled ice cream is totally delicious ; )

I really like maple syrup in my coffee – I travel with a little jar of maple sugar. I also get sluggy brain if I use refined sugar but maple syrup/sugar doesn’t do it to me. Plus it’s delicious!
Just getting into coffee because I had my first baby 8 months ago and its now vital to my survival!
Soooo… haven’t tried this yet, but Whole Foods did a segment on my local news the other day and make coffee with banana milk!!! Just banana’s pureed with a little water. Sounds ALL kinds of amazing!
I make protein smoothies with cold brew and frozen banana! I love it. I figure tropical plants all taste good together if they were grown together?
Try brewing your coffee with a dash of cinnamon in the grounds. When I did the Whole 30 I found doing that and adding unsweetened almond milk made a decent cup. Now it’s the only way I drink my coffee.
Coconut milk in my coffee is a lifesaver! Also has a teeny bit more fat than regular milk, so I feel like you get a normaler buzz and without the sugar kick. Also agree with Lauren—cinnamon makes all the difference.
I’ve been making chai tea lattes in the morning, and I’m not suggesting you not drink coffee, but if you blended your coffee with coconut milk or almond milk and a pitted date… it’s my favorite thing!
I love Masters of Sex! Haven’t watched this weeks episode yet though..excited to see what twists and turns you’re talking about. IDK how I feel about The Affair jumping ahead…ugh. As for coffee, I just bought the stevia drops from Trader Joe’s…..so far, so good. Definitely doesn’t make my coffee taste like ice cream, but helps. ***as I currently sip a salted caramel iced macchiato from Dunkin, YUM.
I drink my coffee black, but I do like some of the flavored grounds (people make fun of me but I don’t care) – vanilla, cinnamon, etc. They have a nice amount of sweetness without the added sugar.
Organic coconut oil and organic almond milk in my coffee. I whip it for 5 seconds in the magic bullet and its frothy and creamy but not overly sweet or coconutty (word?). Bonus, coconut oil is SO good for you.
Honestly instead of putting sugar in my coffee I toss in a dollop of whipped cream. Adds just a bit of sweetness and creaminess.
Califia Farms makes a Cold Brew coffee with Almond milk. They have a few different varieties. As someone who also likes their coffee to be mainly creamer and sugar, this is a really good alternative when I’m cutting out dairy and cutting down on sugar. :)
Anthony Bourdain ,my generation. I’ve done a lot of what he has done in my twenties.
I figure I will pick it up again with my husband when the kids are going their own way.
………………………oh yes , Starbucks venti Decaf Misto……..with a dusting cinnamon.
Two coffee suggestions…
1) As one reader mentioned above, a cafe au lait is a good way to go. Steaming the milk sweetens it in my opinion. Those battery-operated frothers work really well.
2) My husband’s standard at-home or coffee shop order is an unsweetened drink that I think tastes like coffee ice cream. At home: brew espresso and let it cool in the fridge. Put about 1/4 cup in a medium class and fill to the top with whole milk. So rich and good. He makes a big batch of stove-top espresso, decants into a glass bottle and uses it all week. At a coffee shop, ask for a double shot in a small or medium cup and ask them to fill with cold milk (or fill yourself at the milk station). This will cost you anywhere from $1.75-5.00 depending on how stumped the barista is by the request.
sometimes I use my Bodum glass frother with whole milk, it’s so much sweeter than % milks.
Ummm, why is this the first I’m seeing about rolled ice cream?! Looks absolutely FABULOUS.
Coffee suggestions: iced cold brew with milk & no sugar, it’s less bitter than a regular cup. Or regular coffee with your fave milk and sugar free syrup. Or affogato! Also I’m not sure if anyone has ever noticed, but most brands of store bought flavored creamer aren’t made with dairy. Check the labels!
I solved the same coffee problem by adding a tea bag to my cup and letting it steep for a couple of minutes. Â Soooo much variety, esp during the fall and winter. Â Sugar cookie, pumpkin, chai, vanilla honey…so good.
I love masters of sex but fear it won’t be around for long bc seriously, I bring it up and I’m met with blank stares. Â How is nobody watching???? Â Cannot wait for the affair!!!
I’ve been digging putting some steamed full-fat coconut milk in my coffee with a little cocoa and stevia. The creaminess of the full-fat coconut milk is just bomb! And you don’t feel like death after :).
I also love Masters of Sex! So much. You are definitely not the only one watching. Though I do wonder how long they can sustain it. Which isn’t always a bad thing. We shall see!
One time on my way to Europe we stopped off in Iceland for a layover, and at about 2:00 am my time (i.e., while everyone on the plane was sleeping) the pilot announced that at the front of the plane on the left side you could see the Northern lights. Of course,I was sitting at the BACK of the plane on the RIGHT SIDE in a window seat, and I felt bad asking the person in the aisle to get up so I could walk up to the front of the plane to see the lights. (My fiance was in the middle, so I didn’t care too much about waking him up, haha!) Now I feel like I missed out on one of the wonders of the world (or whatever). I guess I’ll just have to go back!
My go to coffee order at the moment is Peets Almond Milk Latte with two pumps of maple. So YUM! And not sweet…I’m sure a Maple Latte would be sweet because they add what…4-5 pumps? Idk But the maple brings out the roasty caramely flavor of the coffee….SO GOOD. And Peets Almond Milk wins…it’s the only place other than whole foods that I think does the almond milk latte right. :)
I have to comment about your coffee….I have been drinking coffee since I can remember. I ALWAYS drank it with some form of sugar and creamer (regular sugar, “fake” sugar, whole/skim milk, cream…you name it). About 4-5 years ago I started drinking black coffee because I know the dairy and sugar isn’t good for you!!! I’ve always heard you just have to go cold turkey and should be a straight black coffee drink from then on. I still drink my coffee black but I STILL crave the cream and sweetener…and it’s been YEARS. I don’t think you’ll ever get over it…it’s just something you’ll purposely have to stay away from :/
I’m a big fan of coffee with a bit of half and half, and maple syrup. So yummy and not straight up sugar or artificial syrup. Delish!
I’m like you Jess, I don’t like a bitter coffee but somehow the combo of coffee+milk and sweetener didn’t agree with me. My solution upon a friend’s recommendation was to switch to plant based milks, and since those (even in their unsweetened form) are rather sweet, they sweeten my coffee perfectly, no need to add any additional honey/maple syrup or anything else. So now when I drink coffee I simply add a splash of almond, rice or oat milk and I’m good to go :-) Let me know if you try it and whether it works for you as well.
I only drink black coffee with a small splash of milk.Â
I used to put a teaspoon of sugar in, but then just quit about 5 years ago. It was weird at first but I got used to it pretty quick. And now I can’t drink sweet coffee AT ALL. Unless it’s iced with ice cream, which is then a coffee dessert, so it’s different. But my morning-afternoon-evening fix all have to be unsweetened.Â
Wish I had some advice, but I really quit cold turkey. But I do think drinking unsweetened coffee exposes the taste of the coffee more, so you just have to make sure you’re buying/making good coffee – only naturally bitter and creamy, not watered down or burnt.Â
I’m the same way. Â Gave up sweeteners in my coffee several years ago, and haven’t looked back. Â I can’t stand sweet coffee now. Â I drink mine black (preferably a strong, dark brew) with just a splash of half & half or heavy cream – which adds just a touch of dairy sweetness to take the edge off the bitterness of the coffee. Â (Disclaimer: skim or 2% milk just does NOT work the same way. Â Neither does almond milk, fwiw.)
I’ve tried bulletproof coffee (black coffee blended with butter and/or coconut oil) but it’s too rich for my tastes. Â I’m happy with my cream.
Coffee- decaf, sugar free vanilla soy latte. You won’t go back. It’s like a slice of heaven.
home hack coffee is to do about 3/4ish brewed coffee to 1/4ish Tazo chai tea concentrate. Lazy man’s dirty chai I guess? The pumpkin chai is kind of killing it right now. It might work for you because it’s a little sweet, but not hurt your teeth sweet.
100% convinced Tom Hanks is just a wonderful human being.
A year or two ago (I don’t remember which year it was now), I sat next to this woman heading to Florida. We hit it off and talked the whole flight. Figured, well, that was fun.
Coming home a week later, her and I were on the same flight going home!!!!!! So, we sat together again and this time exchanged phone numbers. I never did call her and I think I’ve lost her number, but still, small world!!!!!!
This is the first I’ve heard of rolled ice cream! MUST try!
for coffee….i do coffee (decent quality ground fresh) wit cashew milk (less aftertaste vs almond or soy) and a small amount of sugar free syrup. i do agree though that sometimes i dont always feel that great. not like death just not great. well its obviously not from dairy so im sure its from that small amount of sweetener. i have just tried to cut back over the years at the amount of the syrup i use but i just cant give it up ! i love all the flavors !
So many great coffee ideas! I love coffee but hate adding creamer/sugar and have tried to eliminate but just don’t like the taste as much (at all). I’m going to try many of the suggestions here; I’ll report back if I find a favorite!
#4: A couple years ago I was on a flight from Milwaukee to Portland, ME with a layover in Baltimore. I didn’t pay much mind to anyone on my flight because I was excited about getting to Maine. From Portland, I took a bus a couple hours north to Rockland to board a windjammer for a sailing cruise. A teenage girl that was on my same sailing cruise said to me, “Hey! You were on our flight from Baltimore!”
I do heavy whipping cream, it’s like coffee ice cream but not as sweet, and since it’s all fat, you don’t get of the sugar spikes.
Regular coffee with soy milk- no added sugar, dairy with caffeine :) The soy milk is regular so there is some sugar in there but it is unbelievably sweet for the small amount in there and super creamy! That’s my dietitian tip :)
11 years ago, I served on a jury in Phoenix, Arizona, for a murder trial. It was a pretty quick case, the whole trial lasted 3 days.
2 years later, I moved from Phoenix to Dallas. I was on a flight back to visit my parents about a year after that and…my seat mate was a guy who was on the jury with me. It took me a good 30 minutes of awkward side stares to figure it out, but I did. Trippy!
Sounds really great, looks so appetizing!
I would like to read the ingredients list. Can anyone help?
Super cute! I made cupcake cones with theses. Perfect two bite treat :)
