Tuesday Things.
1. Whoa whoa whoa how incredible is this apple pistachio tart? Stunning!
2. I can’t stop listening to the Weeknd’s song, Starboy. I just freaking love the beat!
3. We are officially going to be redoing our kitchen (no, I mean, WE aren’t doing it ourselves, 1. we don’t know how and 2. that would be an excellent recipe for divorce) and I’m terrified. Like it’s going to be the worst experience in the universe while it’s happening, correct?
4. I’ve always been a huuuuge magazine junkie but since Max was born, I haven’t been able to go through as many and have let a lot of subscriptions lapse. My favorites that I’ve got for years are Donny Hay, Delicious, Food and Wine and Bon Appetit but may switch it up with the last two. What are your faves?!
5. Every year I talk about how I don’t enjoy Halloween (I really just don’t love dressing up), BUT. I am thinking maaayyyybe this is a good time to get those Lisa Frank clothes that I’m way way way too old to buy.
6. Okay, was this not theeee BEST Masters of Sex episode of all time?! There were so many surprises and it made me fall in love again with the show. Michael Sheen’s expressions were perfect. Libby is amazing. I wanted to punch Virginia in the face at the end. Eeeep. Thoughts?
7. This is what happens when women dump out their bags. Otherwise known as the creepiest, most fascinating thing ever.
8. When I was a kid, we went to pick out pumpkins and do fall-like festival things ONE day out of the year. Now, in this world of excess, Eddie and I aim to go to a fall festival every single weekend. Basic.
9. Where did “basic” even originate because I absolutely hate it. I mean, I use it, (I’m sure because I’m a desperate attention-seeking millennial), but seriously every single thing I love is considered basic. Except for Uggs. I don’t love Uggs. Other than in the privacy of my own home.
10. Last week Eddie and I shared a box of annie’s mac and cheese for the first time in for.ev.er (sandlot style) and he was mildly horrified when I crushed up potato chips and put them on top. My dad taught us that trick when we were on vacation in Boyne City at my great grandma’s house like 20 years ago and it’s delicious. Which is crazy because I normally don’t care about chips. But it’s SO good. Does anyone else do this trickery? Eddie thinks I’m insane.
11. Raise your hand if you need to train your brain to be more patient. See also: remove the internet from the universe.

I have the texture app on my ipaf and fit $9.99 a month you get pretty much every magazine in publication and the back issues. You can also have apps on 4 separate devices so you can read on your phone or anyplace else.
I subscribe to People, Food & Wine, Bon Appetit and Cooks Illustrated. I LOOOOOOOOVE Cooks Illustrated. It comes out bi-monthly (or maybe quarterly?) and I literally read it cover to cover multiple times. It’s the only magazine I don’t just skim and read only the things I really, really like. It’s life changing. Well, that’s super dramatic, but you get the gist, right? :)
Like it’s going to be the worst experience in the universe while it’s happening, correct? <—– YES! I bought a house this spring that was built in 1912. Yes, 104 years old. Gutted most of it including the kitchen and baths. Let's just say it wasn't the most fun summer I've ever had. Pre-cook like you're having another baby. Pre-cook and pre-shoot as much as you possibly can AND have at least a month's worth of extra posts over and beyond what you think you need because construction always takes way longer than they tell you! :)
Good luck with the kitchen renovation! I would be terrified, too. I don’t know how you carry on any sort of normal routine without working kitchen appliances. You’ll have to talk to Lindsay of Pinch of Yum about the perils of running a food blog while navigating a kitchen renovation because she and her husband did a major overhaul just a few years ago.
Did you this article we did on Bustle!? https://www.bustle.com/articles/186426-5-lisa-frank-halloween-costume-ideas-for-2016-that-are-all-your-90s-dreams-come-true SO GOOD!!!
thanks for the love! also i love using for basic for everything bc im basic lol
I don’t care about potato chips at all either, but now it’s all I can think about – crumbling them up on top of mac n cheese. That sounds incredible. How much more carby and sodium-laden can we make that dish?
I was *just* talking about this with a friend today, and I do not understand enormous tote bags (like the Neverfull). I carry my wallet, keys, chapstick, phone. That’s it. It is the ONLY place in life where I’m a minimalist. Hence, the mini MAC’s size is perfection for me. :)
Starboy has been in my head all day and coincidentally in my head when I read this post!
My dad always put crushed up doritos on our mac and cheese!!!
The secret to understanding how long a kitchen project will be is to take the number quoted and double it and change increase the unit of measure. (Example: 2 weeks = 4 months)
It’s so hard, but so worth it. Pick what you love, not what will look good on the blog.
And Halloween is so much more fun with a kiddo who can trick or treat.

Check out Australian Gourmet Traveller
I hope you’ll do a before and after of your kitchen!!
Oh my gosh! My mom used to call it Potato Chip Casserole! We didn’t have a ton of money growing up, and I think she hated the idea of throwing away the bits of chips in the bottom of the bag. Memories!
Everyone I know who has gone through a kitchen remodeling has said that it’s miserable, especially if you really like to cook(which is probably why I’ve only done things like put in a new counter, sinks and faucets)… if you keep that in mind and can plan for it ahead of time it will help.
I really don’t like Halloween and was always terrified to open the doors to the trick-or-treaters when I was little. But my son loves it so…..
I hate Uggs on adults, but they are really cute on little kids ; said host said, they have zero support and are not good for their feet)…
I’m a magazine junkie, too, and the two I can’t live without are HGTV Magazine and Food Network Magazine. Trust me, they’re both awesome!
I agree… I thought Masters of Sex this week was great. Bill’s reaction to Virginia at the end was perfect! Anyone else miss Dan Logan? I love Josh Charles.
We did our 13×13 kitchen ourselves all while keeping up with a 3 year old. It was a total redo from demo, moving water/gas lines, adding windows, new floor, fix the ceiling, all cabinets, backsplash, lighting, new electrical panel, countertops. EVERYTHING. My husband and his uncle weekend-warrior’ed it and it was done in 3 months so surely you should be done with a team of hired hands in half that time or less. I was in the childcare/procurement/janitorial departments during the renovation lol. So many trips to Lowe’s.
Keys for (a non-food blogger) success were prepping freezer meals in advance. Hi 48 undercooked pancakes to be tossed in the toaster at a later date. Lots of lasagna, banana bread, pre-scooped cookie dough, meatballs, etc. Definitely couldn’t have lived without my toaster oven and hot plate. We really didn’t eat out too often, maybe once a week. Just remember your end goal and you can totally do it.
I still have post traumatic stress from doing dishes in the bath tub while undergoing our kitchen reno. It took 12 weeks and brought me to tears at least three times, BUT now every time I walk into the kitchen I smile because it was SO worth it.
Chips in boxed Mac n Cheese sounds ok….But the #1 addition to boxed Mac n Cheese is definitely cut up hot dogs
we remodeled our kitchen last year… complete gut job, a wall came out, the works. i didn’t have a kitchen for more than 6 months, and i love to cook and bake. it was incredibly trying, but ultimately so worth it. focusing on the end result was what kept me sane… and grateful. good luck!
its cut up hot dogs and ketchup on my mac & cheese!
Magazine suggestions… Saveur… Fine Cooking… Bake… Love them all.
If you like potato chips on your mac and cheese, try crushed Cheez Its. Trust me. Even better if you throw them on for the last 10 minutes or so of baking.
My boyfriend was recently telling me about his mom’s mac and cheese and how she tops it with potato chips. I’ve still yet to try it but I was totally taken back when he said potato chips. I think it’s weird but I could see how it has potential. But is it really better than a good panko?
You may be able to get magazines on your tablet for free from your local library. It’s not the same as holding one to flip through, but free is always good.
We redid our kitchen when we first bought our house. It was a good time to do it, but it was probably 6 months before we had everything put together in there. Same on Uggs; I got a fake pair that totally turned into house shoes.
I like to put corn in my Mac ‘n Cheese. I don’t know, I think the dorm cafeteria did a kindergarten dinner night and it always had mac ‘n cheese, chicken nuggets, and corn…. but I still love it 10 years later.
Real Simple is my magazine lover, but I barely make time to read it right now, which makes me sad!
Crushed up potato chips on tuna fish casserole.
My family did that over 40 years ago.
Foodie magazines to savour: Saveur, homecooking from around the world! And Olive, beautiful food from Britain.

Oh kitchen renos. Super not fun. We lived off food microwaved under the comfort of our patio cover in the backyard, and we washed dishes in a plastic crate set up on a trestle table. It felt like school camp. It was horrific, and only 2 years into our marriage, we were SO NOT READY FOR IT. But. The moment we stepped across our new white floor tiles (which had replaced bubbly, dodgy old wood grain-look linoleum from the 80s) into our new white country-style kitchen, with twenty times the storage and bench space of the old chipboard cupboards and weird teal bench tops… it was all worth it. Seriously. You won’t regret it! Five years later I’m still obsessed with my kitchen. It’s perfect!
yes, redoing kitchen sucks. and it will take longer than you think. and yes you can do dishes in the sink/tub but you will not want to like ever. yes it bad for the earth but just do plastic/paper plates and be done with it. we just are doing our living room/hall/etc recently and you are sooooo right….recipe or divorce ! we say the meanest things to each other but somehow its just so frustrating !!!
and always…always….for.e.ver sandlot style ! i saw a guy in the gym with a “you’re killing me smalls tshirt” and i wanted to rip it off of him and take it home !
That is so exciting that you get to redo your kitchen! I remember when my mom’s kitchen was out of commission for about 2 weeks she did a lot of grilling and made picnic-fare; we ate outside most of the time and it was just fun. I know it will be challenging, though.
Also, on the subject of kitchen redo’s, have you heard of grout glitter?!?
we totally used to use crumbled chips as a topper for mac and cheese! (unless my mom was feeling fancy and toasted bread crumbs in butter that night). so good!
Never used on mac and cheese (though it sounds delicious) but I use kettle cooked plain salted potato chips as a chili topper. So much better than tortilla chips, and so crunchy!
Having survived a kitchen remodel, like everyone says – it will take longer than planned AND cost more that you budget for. But it will be worth it in the end and provide you with stories to tell. I survived mine by using my crock pot and electric skillet quite a bit. Take pictures throughout the process. It’s fun to look back. Good luck!
Also, potato chips are really good in a ham sandwich!
