January Favorites: Beauty.
We made it!
To the end of January and I went a little skincare crazy because my face was about to flake off in the cold, dry weather.
Most of my days this month were filled with cookbook photography, so I wasn’t necessarily wearing the fullest face of makeup. I did my basics: tinted moisturizer, mascara, concealer and brows – and if I remembered, something balm-like on my lips! Around this time I always get into really bright shades (corals, oranges and pinks) because they brighten my mood so much. I’m looking for some to try and may go after this Burberry one! I’ve never tried any of the Burberry makeup (and haven’t even had a desire too) but then I saw the bright crimson shade and I was DEAD.
So now, while I only have six things that I really have been wowed by this month… here they are!Â
Hourglass Lip Stylo in Creator. This is my perfect “my lips but better” shade! I’m always looking for one, but it’s so hard to go on recommendations since everyone has different lip colors. Not only do I love how this feels (it’s not SUPER matte, but it’s not shiny either and it is comfortable on the lips and way too easy to apply), the shade is just so pretty. It’s like one shade pinker than my lips. I want these in all the colors! (of course.)
Sol de Janiero Moisturizing Shower Cream Gel. While I haven’t brought the bum bum cream back out quite yet (it’s a little too tropical smelling for my January days), I bought the shower gel and LOVE IT. It smells exactly the same (which is like heaven, hello), but it doesn’t linger like the cream (where the scent lasts forever!). This way I can get my fix. And it is very moisturizing.
It Cosmetics CC Illumination Cream SPF 50. You might remember that I used the original version of this when I started talking about my beauty favorites regularly. I ran out and probably around the same time grabbed the Complexion Rescue (which I still LOVE!) and started using that. While I do still love that, it is a very light coverage. I always want something in between a full foundation and light coverage and since I’m all about the glow, was super excited to try the illuminating version of the CC cream. OMG. I love it so, so much. It is thicker than I’m used to working with, especially on my dry skin, but as long as I’ve moisturized well, it goes right on. I love the illuminating effect!
Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum. I’ve wanted to add in some vitamin C to my skincare and this was the best rated product I found. I loooove Drunk Elephant products and this feels amazing on my skin. I swear my skin looks better somehow already – maybe more… vibrant? Either way, for right now I’m using it every other morning under moisturizer.
Dr Jart Water Sleeping Mask. This has been a favorite for a long time but it’s really saving my skin right now. Here’s the thing. I can’t go ONE day without my nighttime skin routine in the winter because I’m so dry. My face is a mess if I don’t moisturize or do every step at night. I almost always do, but I’ve had a few late nights on days where I didn’t even wear makeup, and I just used a quick makeup wipe before I went to bed. NOT GOOD. This saved my skin big time after those days. I’m using this about 4 days a week right now.
It Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm. Okay this is a love/hate relationship. I LOVE cleansing oils and use them every time I wear any makeup on my eyes. My go-to has always been the MAC cleanse off oil because it has a pump! Yes, I’ve used coconut oil and I love it, but having the pump is just so easy and convenient and I swear the makeup melts in seconds. Now, I am really loving this product because it’s so gentle, has zero fragrance (zero!) and takes everything off. But since I’m still opening up a jar and scooping it, it would be just as easy to use coconut oil. Hmmm. On the fence.
What spring things are you loving right now?! I heard that there are some new Cover FX enhancing drops coming out (rose gold?!) and I’m super excited about those. Eeeep.
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are a few amazon general links above. thank you for being here!}

Skinceuticals is hands down the best Vitamin C serum out there. You would love the CE + Ferulic if you are dry.
What is your nighttime skincare routine?
I’ve been loving the Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich. There haven’t been any patchy spots on my Face since I started using it, and somehow it seems to keep most breakouts at bay. It’s magic!
Since I’ve found the It Cosmetics CC Illuminating Cream I have been hooked. I was an 80’s child and I absolutely could not live without Max Factor’s Pan Stick Makeup, but after it got discontinued in the U.S. I was stuck trying everything out there, and honestly it was last year in 2016 that I discovered It Cosmetics. Big Brother is my favorite show and it only comes on once a year, but I totally remember Season 2 when the beautiful Jamie Kern was an unknown houseguest on Big Brother. She didn’t win but she did go on to bigger and better things such as inventing and selling her cosmetics that she had formulated which we now know as It Cosmetics. I thought nothing would ever be able to stand up to Max Factor but It Cosmetics does so much more for my skin since I’m 43 now and it has seen me threw some pretty hectic days.
My new fav is the Chanel Jumbo Lip Crayon – stays on – moist and a little shiny – the bomb.
Serums make SUCH a different in this horrid cold January weather – lovely products – enjoyed this a lot!
For taking off my makeup I ALWAYS go back to the Boscia Makeup Breakup Cleansing Oil (with a pump!). I love using oil, it feels so luxurious.
I’ve been loving IT cosmetics lately, so I’m totally going to try these two that you mentioned, and I bought that bum bum moisturizer this summer, now i’m off to buy the shower gel because I LOVED that scent!!
I love love love love love the Dr. Jart sleeping mask too! It makes my skin so soft and moisturized; I’m obsessed.
This “it’s a little too tropical smelling for my January days” my friend,is where we differ.  lol   I love all tropical things in January so I can pretend January doesn’t even exist! #denial #hateWinterÂ
i spent most of january sick and with my nose red and peely. how fun ! i ended up having to use aquaphor on it and it reminded me how simple products sometimes are the best. nat. i got a zit under my nose right after from the vaseline like texture of the aquaphor but the red/peeling/soreness was gone :) Other than that i have been using a slightly diff. under eye dark circle coverup game. i use the smashbox hydrating primer for undereyes first. then apply some tarte orangey corrector (light/medium the medium/dark was WAY to orange for me). then apply UD naked concealer, then finish with a tiny bit of maybelliene pink brightener with the spongey tip. all with a sephora brand beauty blender. then follow with a light dust of setting powder. seeing in in writing makes me look crazy and like it must take 30 mins but it doesnt and its working for me. i have horrible dark circles mostly from thin skin/allergies/hereditary so there is no cream that will ever help and many a concealer that will crease. so i am pumped i seem to have found something that works….now im waiting for the weather to change and the concoction to totally fail me in the warm weather :) i’ve been wanting to try drunk elephant C firma but it has wheat in it and i’m allergic. i do hear its the gold standard vit c !
What type of face wash do you use? I find that to be a HUGE factor of how my skin feels. Lately it’s actually felt oily (which is odd for the nyc winter) and I’m thinking of switching it up… suggestions?
IT Cosmetics is my JAM!!!!!!! I got a small sample size of the CC cream in a beauty box and I cannot say enough wonderful things about it. The coverage isn’t heavy but not super light either. It smells weirdly good! Goes on quickly , blends evenly, has staying power. LOVE.
Have you ever tried the NYX butter glosses? My mom let me try hers on the other day and it felt SO GOOD. I want to get one for myself, but I’m absolutely horrid at picking out lip colors so I’m a little gun shy. Is it just lots of trial and error to get the right shade? I’m not even sure how to go about it correctly.
Laura Mercier has 3 featured lipsticks right now and one is a pinky coral that is just the right brightness-I love it!!
I’ve heard awesome things about those hourglass lipsticks!

The IT Cosmetics CC cream original version is my go-to on a daily basis. So easy to apply and feels so good. Will like to try the Illumination version. For going out, I like Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I have been using Sunday Riley Good Genes, along with the Luna oil and I’m still flaking off and have dry patches here and there and it has caused me to breakout too. So many good reviews on those products, but my skin doesn’t seem to do well with them. I have been using it for a few weeks already, trying to give it some time although debating if I should just return them and get something else. Kate Somerville’s products are my faves for skincare, so far the Goat cream is very moisturizing.
I use that CC cream obsessively! It’s the best!

Did you know you can buy coconut oil in a pump? Game changer. And it’s cheap. Search for Fractionated Coconut Oil on Amazon and you’ll get about 500 hits. I use the Majestic Pure brand and love it. Only bummer is it doesn’t smell like coconuts! Which might be a bonus for you…

I need a cleansing oil and I’ve tried so many, but my search is over. Â Kiehls midnight recovery cleansing oil ? Â It has a pump, the scent is light and relaxing, a little goes a long way, it LEGIT removes everything, annnd it doesn’t make my eyeballs sting or blurry.
And dr jart water replenishment sheet mask ??. I wear it alone in bed with Netflix and a relaxing beverage because they make me look like a face wearing psycho (says my husband). Â But so worth it and instant results.
Do you take fish oil? I used to have dry skin so I am moisturizing from the inside out! I take 4,000 mgs a day. I also take coconut oil capsules. 4,000 mgs a day. Super soft skin! I buy mine from my chiropractor.
I recommend the fractionated cocount oil from Amazon for makeup removal. It comes with a pump and is very affordable ($10). I love it. I recently switched to the makeup eraser rags so I don’t need makeup remover anymore, but when my rag is being washed, I use the coconut oil with a pump.
