marriage

No, he doesn’t technically have one.

However, I often joke insist that he needs one. For now, this beautiful cooler is his man purse.

Unfortunately, I have to thank my mom for this. She bought Mr. How Sweet a Nascar-themed basket which included this cooler at a charity auction a few years ago. Just what we needed – more dyecast cars.

Anytime he leaves the house, you can guarantee that Mr. How Sweet has these incredibly important items with him.

I’m giving you a sneak peek inside.

Water: he usually has 4-5 bottles with him. I guess he is preparing in case a Y2K-like emergency springs up. Or he has to eat 3 chicken breasts on the road before he spontaneously combusts. That chicken is dry, you know. I just always hope there is a restroom where ever we are going.

Phone. Even though his cell phone is from the stone age, dies within the hour after being charged, doesn’t get service unless he is standing on his head, and is never answered no matter how many times it rings, this is a must. Because, you just never know when you might stumble upon a tic-tac-toe-playing-chicken and need to take a picture or call someone who doesn’t care at all to tell them about it.

iPod. I agree on this one. As long as Mr. How Sweet’s hands are off of the radio while we are in the car, this means I won’t accidentally stab him. His iPod equals less channel changing.

Protein bars. Heaven forbid we ever leave the house without a sufficient supply of protein. Didn’t you know that you must have protein with you at all times? It is necessary in emergencies, like eating 2 PF Changs entrees without being satisfied, having a minor meltdown during a movie because of serious starvation, or having a nasty case of hungry angry husband syndrome.

Chapstick. Let’s just say that the first time I sat down in Mr. How Sweet’s car and saw 8 different chapstick’s in the console, I lost it. This was only amplified when I found that he had a chapstick in every possible place and everywhere he went at all times. I tried to make him choose – me or the chapstick – but then I came to love the fact that he always has a chapstick on him when my lips are dry. He is thrilled I just told you this. Trust me.

Wallet. No complaints here. In fact, I enjoy forgetting mine when I’m with Mr. How Sweet. I highly encourage this behavior.

Keys. I like this one, too. Know why? Sometimes, when I want to hit him with a frying pan politely have some time alone, these keys take Mr. How Sweet far, far away, to places like the local horse racing track. They also take him to work everyday so I can blow copious amounts of money on shoes and other things that I just really don’t need. Ever.

Mr. How Sweet’s man purse is filled with a few more miscellaneous items, such as bills, receipts, house keys, sunglasses and Garth Brooks cassette tapes. There is also some loose change in there in case Mr. How Sweet needs to use a pay phone or buy some penny candy. Oh, the good old days.

A Boy’s Job.

January 5, 2010 · 17 comments

Thank you all so much for your amazing responses to the first post where I really poured my heart out. It felt so good. To be honest, I am not afraid of rejection. Trust me, I expect to be rejected thousands of times. But when it is something that I really want, the fear or rejection doesn’t stop me.

Last night, I decided to shovel the driveway. This was really the first time shoveling for me, because, well . . . I lived in a house with a father and 2 brothers, and now I live in a house with a husband. Yes, I may be a brat – but that doesn’t meant it isn’t a man’s job. :)

And while living at home, it’s not like my brothers did much work either. But just knowing there were 2 boys in the house that should could do the work before me? I certainly wasn’t doing much manual labor.

However, my hubby has a looooong commute to and from work. I knew that after his long drive home and few hours in the gym, he’d feel like he had to come home and shovel, given his recent addiction.

I decided to shovel so we could spend some time together and he wouldn’t be shoveling at 11pm. It was a purely selfish decision.

This is about 1/4 of the drive.

My shoveling job wasn’t pretty, and wasn’t nearly as concise as my ‘more-type-A-than-me’ husband. But it got the job done.

And this is what I was wearing.

Overall, I enjoyed the shoveling experience. Our driveway is huge, and at first it was very daunting and overwhelming. I felt like I would never, ever finish. But it was peaceful being outside in the snow.

Except for the deer that I could see laying down in the woods. I was sure it was planning it’s attack.

After my thighs defrosted I was off to make dinner, which I was super excited about.

Fish Tacos!

I grilled some cod with old bay, and used La Tortilla Factory tortillas – they are my favorite with lots of fiber + protein. I also love the texture and the taste.

To the tacos I added:

tomatos

red onion

cilantro

avocado

TJ’s roasted corn

colby-jack cheese

lemon + lime juice

These were so delicous! They tasted so fresh and sweet. I would have preferred to use halibut, but I couldn’t find it in my neck of the woods. It was still mighty tasty.

Shoveling.

December 31, 2009 · 7 comments

I think the hubs has an addiction to snow shoveling.

For the 5th time since Sunday, he is out shoveling the driveway. We got a bit of accumulation, however it is supposed to rain soon and melt it all away. There could be many worse things in newlywed bliss.

Like his old Christina Aguilera addiction.

I’m glad that phase is over, but I still woke up to the Christina Back to Basics concert this morning . . . she is now singing Candyman, wearing what most of us would consider to be underwear. Yet, I can’t tear myself away.

Let’s look at it this way: I’m just glad he is wearing pants this time, and hasn’t consumed 7 beers like he did before shoveling Christmas Eve afternoon.

Pens Pumpkin.

IMG_1891

Update your google readers! http://feeds.feedburner.com/howsweeteats/smSp   My hubby carved a Pittsburgh Pens pumpkin! Not only is he incredible sweet and creative – but he is super talented, too! He did not use a template and simply looked at the Pens logo and just began to carve. How impressive is that!                   Awesome, huh?   I was shocked to find out that there even IS such a thing as a carving template. We got a pumpkin carving kit and to my surprise, it was filled with tons of intricate stencils.    This irked me, and destroyed some childhood dreams. I remember trick or treating when I was younger and seeing these exact same templates carved into pumpkins. I thought the people who could do this were so talented and I always wished I was an artist.   Cheaters.     I attempted one myself.       It is no secret that I have zero patience.   This made me want to dig my eyeballs out chunk by chunk with the cheap carving tool. From now on I will be sticking to triangle eyes and toothless grins.     I made some bbq [...]

Home Alone.

IMG_1381

Usually when my husband travels I really have my act together. House is spotless, meals are prepared, workouts are done, relaxing ensues…     Ok, besides that fact that I sleep on the couch because it is easier to escape an intruder than if I had to jump out of my 2-story bedroom window. Aside from that, I’ve got it all together.   This week was quite different. As I tweeted my life away, I was a complete wreck. Dishes left in the sink and all over the place. Clothes thrown everywhere. Toilet paper and paper towel racks lacking said paper. No cooking. Scraping leftover oreo crust from a baking dish for dinner. Dragging myself out of bed. Leaving green monsters stewing in my warm bedroom. Talk about being in a funk.       I’ve been brainstorming ways to feel more secure. My brother comes to stay with me, but I don’t feel like waiting on him hand and foot while he mooches homemade dinners off of me interrupting his life.       Of course, I thought that a security system may help me feel more secure. Then decided we didn’t need the expense. I’d rather buy shoes. [...]

A Mother Lovett Kind Of Weekend.

IMG_1293

Happy Monday!   Well, not a very happy Monday for me because it started off with a dentist appointment. I usually do not mind going because there are many things in life worse than the dentist. However, today I was told I have about 8 zillion cavities and will be spending the next few Friday’s in the dentist chair. Hip hip horray.       Thank you all so much for the well wishes on our first anniversary. We spent the day in Cleveland and I was all ready to snap pictures, but my camera decided otherwise. It gave me some goofy ‘lens error’ message – but of course was working again by the time we go home. I saw sooo many beautiful Fall scenes that I wanted to snap.       Something occured over the weekend that had us all in giggles and remembering Mother Lovett. For as long as I can remember, Mother Lovett pronounced about 85% of her words incorrectly and used other phrases that we never heard. I think it is common as we get older, but her’s were always quite humorous.   Some favorites: ML: ‘I found a coupon in the paper for Louie’s. I’d [...]

The First Year.

0103

Last weekend, my hubby and I went to a very non-traditional wedding. It was outdoors (talk about freezing!), where the bride and groom were married by a professional actor and the music came from a boom box.   I took away so much from this day – that it isn’t about having a traditional cake (they had cupcakes) or about wearing the most glamourous dress. These 2 people were SO in love. And while I already knew that the above doesn’t make for a happy marriage, it was so refreshing to see a couple so in love that they barely were aware of their surroundings.   The food was INCREDIBLE. Hands down – the best wedding food I have ever eaten. The main course was butternut squash ravioli and bone-in lightly fried chicken breast. Ohmigosh, I can taste it now. Incredible. The cake, or ‘cupcakes’ were amazing as well – so amazing that before the reception even started my husband grabbed one and confidently walked across the room shoving it in his mouth.   He ATE their wedding cake BEFORE they even cut it.   Before the reception had began. I guess he really just isn’t up to speed on [...]

FRA-GEE-LAY.

IMG_0779

Fragile.       I’m sure you all remember the scene in A Christmas Story when the LEG LAMP arrived in the box marked ‘Fra-gee-lay?’     If you don’t recall, Ralphie’s mom really wasn’t a fan.       That is how Mr. Hunt felt a few weeks ago when I brought home this gorgeous specimen.                           I love this lamp. I am such a girl, so anything pink, sparkly, animal-printed, or feather-like immediately catches my eye.       I also LOVE lamps with tiny, crystal beads hanging down. I think they are so cute.                           I want to start a collection.  I already have 2, but I have the feeling if I bring anymore home, I may be sleeping with the turkey.         Maybe he and this guy can have a stare-down?                     Oh fuuuuudge. I can’t wait for the holidays!

How Sweet It ISN'T.

IMG_0703

Call me old fashioned.   My hubby and I didn’t live together before we got married. So when it came time for me to move in, he had to drag me kicking, screaming, and punching.   Why?   He was a bachelor. Had a MAJOR bachelor pad. I mean, this could rival most bachelor pads. And let’s not forget – he is a decade older than me, so his stuff was just…OLD. But financially, it made sense to live there for a short time – we had plans to buy a house.         First up: boatloads of dye cast cars:                   Don’t think that’s alot? That is about 1/64th of the collection. Strewn about the small townhouse.     Some mini cars, lucky to still be living here:                       On the nice bookcase in the family room, sat these:                   We have alot of them.       I do like this guy:                         Sidney Crosby. What a hottie.   [...]
