My Happy Place.

January 5, 2010 · 33 comments

I have this happy place. I store it in my mind and my heart, and I don’t think anyone will ever be able to take it away from me.

I go to this place when times are tough, and I honestly must say that I am truly blessed to not have experienced many tough times in my life. Sometimes I wonder why I am so lucky. Most of the time I think my life is too good to be true. Occasionally I am just waiting for the ball to drop. But what I’m really thinking? I think tough times have a lot to do with our attitude. It all depends on how we look at the situation.

I have always been a worry-wart. Always. Even when I was 7-8 years old, I would worry about things I couldn’t control. What if my parent’s got into a car accident on their way home? What if one of my brother’s got hurt?

Growing up, bedtime was always a really rough time for me. If I couldn’t fall asleep I would get extreme anxiety, which would just keep me up for hours, worrying about not sleeping. Just imagine how much my parents loved this.

Luckily for them, now my husband gets to deal with it.

These days, I have learned to deal with my anxiety better. Perhaps it came with age? Perhaps it came from marrying a man who loses his mind if there is a solitary crumb on the carpet? And I mean that is the sweetest way.

No matter what the situation may be, many nights I fall asleep dreaming on my happy place. There is nothing more comforting in the world.

Every summer in August, we go to Boyne City, Michigan and stay right on the lake.

Both of my grandparents are from Michigan, and my great-grandparents had a house in Boyne City. My dad vacationed there when he was young, and he continued the tradition with us.

I love this place more than anything. It may stem from how much my father loves it. It is a place he is always excited to go to, a place where he is completely relaxed, and in my eyes, the most like himself. And a place where he is at peace.

In Boyne City, I don’t feel like I need to be doing something. I am completely content just sitting outside reading, looking into the lake well into the evening.

It is also where my true love for James Taylor’s music stems from. We drive to Boyne City – a nice, long 10 hours or so. These days we take more than one car, but growing up, we were all shoved into an Explorer. We would leave in the middle of the night so we didn’t drive my parents mad. And almost the entire way there, we’d listen to James Taylor. To this day, there is no other music that comforts or stirs emotion in me like his.

I’ve never felt at peace like I have there.  It’s as if I offer everything up and just be.

And while just being is what I love most about it, one of the best parts is how closely my family bonds there. Sure, one time we almost died (literally) on a pontoon boat. And another time my Aunt Lisa (Hi!) almost burnt down our condo while sterilizing bottle nipples.

But it has all been worth it.

And I am never ready to go home. I am always ready to go back.

So when I find myself struggling with anxiety, or wishing things were different, or just needing to relax, I transport myself there. I can smell the air and feel the breeze and remember everything about it. It comforts me like nothing else.

What is your happy place?

I Love Sparkles.

November 23, 2009 · 10 comments

Good evening!

Today was pretty uneventful, and now we are one week closer to Thanksgiving! :)

For dinner, I threw the Firecracker shrimp into some pasta. It was delicious – it is so much more versatile than your plain old cocktail shrimp.

I didn’t snap a picture since I have a hungry, angry husband, but it was tasty.

When I arrived home tonight, I saw a package at my front door. I was pretty suprised being that I haven’t online shopped recently, something I dislike, but my bank account likes.

I opened it to find this incredibly cute cupcake garland from my Aunt Ann, who lives in San Diego.

Isn’t this just so adorable?! Of course, I love it because I love all things that sparkle. Thank you so much, Aunt Ann!!

I snuck in an awesome workout that consisted of:

*30 minutes on the elliptical

*30 minutes of full body

  • alternating lunges 3 x 20 x 25lb dumbbells + incline chest presses 3 x 12 x 30lb dumbbells
  • squats 3 x 15 x 35lb dumbbells + seated row 3 x 10 x 90lbs
  • stiff-legged deadlifts 3 x 12 x 110lbs + lat pulldowns 3 x 12 x 95
  • 50 pushups + 20 triceps dips

*20 minutes of yoga

I just wanted to share with everyone this incredible miracle of a local newscaster’s baby. My husband and I have been following it for months, and I just become so overwhelmed with emotion each time I learn more. Please take some time to read this story, and click on the links and stories inside. It is more than worth your time. Miracle baby.

Have a wonderful evening – many more appetizers to come tomorrow!

Pens Pumpkin.

IMG_1891

Update your google readers! http://feeds.feedburner.com/howsweeteats/smSp   My hubby carved a Pittsburgh Pens pumpkin! Not only is he incredible sweet and creative – but he is super talented, too! He did not use a template and simply looked at the Pens logo and just began to carve. How impressive is that!                   Awesome, huh?   I was shocked to find out that there even IS such a thing as a carving template. We got a pumpkin carving kit and to my surprise, it was filled with tons of intricate stencils.    This irked me, and destroyed some childhood dreams. I remember trick or treating when I was younger and seeing these exact same templates carved into pumpkins. I thought the people who could do this were so talented and I always wished I was an artist.   Cheaters.     I attempted one myself.       It is no secret that I have zero patience.   This made me want to dig my eyeballs out chunk by chunk with the cheap carving tool. From now on I will be sticking to triangle eyes and toothless grins.     I made some bbq [...]

Loaded Steak Salad and 20 Questions. Or 10.

IMG_1537

Check out this loaded steak salad we had for din-din tonight!   Ok, let’s get real – we all know that I didn’t eat this salad because it is chock full of my frenemie, vegetables. You will be happy to know that I did create a ‘vegetable crisp’ today that I will be posting sometime this week. I only had a few bites and it tasted great, but let’s hope that the veggies can fully redeem themselves and I will gobble it up all week.   Just in case I gag on it at lunch, I am defrosting some of my leftover veggie soup for the week. I can’t wait – those are some veggies that I love!       Leafy greens.                       We love this dressing. Mainly because it tastes like Caesar, but only has 6 grams of fat per serving. That’s alot less than the usual 20-25 grams of fat per restaurant Caesar!                           I usually do not use salad dressings because I really am not a fan. I have never found one I love [...]

Home Alone.

IMG_1381

Usually when my husband travels I really have my act together. House is spotless, meals are prepared, workouts are done, relaxing ensues…     Ok, besides that fact that I sleep on the couch because it is easier to escape an intruder than if I had to jump out of my 2-story bedroom window. Aside from that, I’ve got it all together.   This week was quite different. As I tweeted my life away, I was a complete wreck. Dishes left in the sink and all over the place. Clothes thrown everywhere. Toilet paper and paper towel racks lacking said paper. No cooking. Scraping leftover oreo crust from a baking dish for dinner. Dragging myself out of bed. Leaving green monsters stewing in my warm bedroom. Talk about being in a funk.       I’ve been brainstorming ways to feel more secure. My brother comes to stay with me, but I don’t feel like waiting on him hand and foot while he mooches homemade dinners off of me interrupting his life.       Of course, I thought that a security system may help me feel more secure. Then decided we didn’t need the expense. I’d rather buy shoes. [...]

Blog Bootcamp.

IMG_1379

Good Morning!! How is everybody’s Wednesday so far?   Thanks to everyone who is following me on Twitter! If you haven’t started following yet, please join in while I tweet my life away. I still don’t know how to tweet from my crackberry. Oh well, this is probably a good thing.        When I came home last night I found this in my bedroom.                 A glass with the remnants of a green monster from 6:30 yesterday morning. As I tweeted last night, it looked and smelled like swampland. It was almost as great as the half-full green blender still sitting on the counter.             And then we have this.               The remnants of the Oreo Dessert. Beware…this is what happens when your husband is out of town, it is garbage night, and this must be throw away before you gain 15 more lbs. And if you can’t make out that picture, it would be the dessert FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN so the crust could be eaten. By who? I have no idea.                   [...]

A Mother Lovett Kind Of Weekend.

IMG_1293

Happy Monday!   Well, not a very happy Monday for me because it started off with a dentist appointment. I usually do not mind going because there are many things in life worse than the dentist. However, today I was told I have about 8 zillion cavities and will be spending the next few Friday’s in the dentist chair. Hip hip horray.       Thank you all so much for the well wishes on our first anniversary. We spent the day in Cleveland and I was all ready to snap pictures, but my camera decided otherwise. It gave me some goofy ‘lens error’ message – but of course was working again by the time we go home. I saw sooo many beautiful Fall scenes that I wanted to snap.       Something occured over the weekend that had us all in giggles and remembering Mother Lovett. For as long as I can remember, Mother Lovett pronounced about 85% of her words incorrectly and used other phrases that we never heard. I think it is common as we get older, but her’s were always quite humorous.   Some favorites: ML: ‘I found a coupon in the paper for Louie’s. I’d [...]

The First Year.

0103

Last weekend, my hubby and I went to a very non-traditional wedding. It was outdoors (talk about freezing!), where the bride and groom were married by a professional actor and the music came from a boom box.   I took away so much from this day – that it isn’t about having a traditional cake (they had cupcakes) or about wearing the most glamourous dress. These 2 people were SO in love. And while I already knew that the above doesn’t make for a happy marriage, it was so refreshing to see a couple so in love that they barely were aware of their surroundings.   The food was INCREDIBLE. Hands down – the best wedding food I have ever eaten. The main course was butternut squash ravioli and bone-in lightly fried chicken breast. Ohmigosh, I can taste it now. Incredible. The cake, or ‘cupcakes’ were amazing as well – so amazing that before the reception even started my husband grabbed one and confidently walked across the room shoving it in his mouth.   He ATE their wedding cake BEFORE they even cut it.   Before the reception had began. I guess he really just isn’t up to speed on [...]

The Pretend Vegetarian.

IMG_1259

Happy weekend! It could not get here soon enough.   For about a year now, I have had a strong aversion to meat. It pretty much came out of the blue, but I think it stemmed from that time I lost my mind competition dieting.   It began with chicken. I can’t swallow it if I take it bite. It literally makes me gag. It’s not the taste, but the texture. I actually like the taste. Then a few months ago, I developed an aversion towards beef and fish. I also ate alot of this while competition dieting.   I absolutely CANNOT cook chicken, steak, or fish for myself and want to eat it. The whole process of cooking it grosses me out. If I see one tendon or vein or a bit of gristle…GROSS! I’m done. (Note: I still cook meat everyday for my hubby, friends and family, and some of my recipes are really, very good. Of course I am still going to whore these out detail these on the blog.)   I CAN eat meat out in nice restaurants. (And seriously, how gross is THAT? Then I really don’t know what I’m eating). Only a few bites, however. I [...]
