Tropical Avocado Smoothie.
I know I am getting old when the most exciting thing that happens to me is finding an avocado for $1.99.
Now, this avocado wasn’t ripe, but it’s better than paying $4.00 for one.
And like everything else, I wanted it ripened yesterday.
I am a proud product of the internet generation. Internet instant gratification: causing me to have less and less patience since 1997.
Â
I am a sucker for all things labeled ‘tropical.’
Be it perfume, lipgloss, candles, smoothies, or seafood, I am willing to drop major dollars if it takes my mind to sparkling waters and white beaches.
I have bought the frozen avocado halves at Trader Joe’s, and I love them for smoothies. This time, however, I used the avocado that cost me $1.99 + my sanity as I was waiting for it to ripen.
Â
We all know that I would sell my soul for coconut.
Not only is there coconut milk and shredded coconut in the smoothie, I added some more to the top.
Because if I have to go somehow, I’d like to OD on coconut.
Â
This smoothie is so refreshing and just slightly sweet. I love using frozen bananas – the consistency is creamy and thick. They are a must for all of my smoothies.
Â
Tropical Avocado Smoothie
1/2 avocado
1/2 cup lite coconut milk
1/2 cup milk or water (I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
2 ice cubes
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons coconut
Add everything to the blended except for 1 tablespoon of coconut. Blend until smooth. Garnish with remaining coconut and sliced bananas.

After downing this smoothie, I proceeded to finish off the other half of the avocado with my major vice: blue corn chips.
Sure, they are blue, which must mean they are healthy. And they are organic. And when you eat an entire bag in one sitting, they taste really good, too.

Wow, not sure about the avocado in the smoothie, but I love coconut!
That sounds like an interesting recipe. I will have to try that! Never heard of frozen avocados?!?!?
This looks great! Have you ever tried avocado and sweetened condensed milk smoothies? I think it’s a Brazilian thing, but also maybe a Vietnamese thing too. It’s the BEST way to eat your vegetables! I consider avocado a vegetable…maybe it’s not.
Also, I’m on my way to Trader Joe’s for frozen avocado halves! I didn’t know they existed! Thanks!
tropical anything is good by me! the smoothie looks great and did you know that if you put the avos in a brown paper bag, they will ripen about twice as fast? Just a tip for ya :) At 2 bucks each though, that’s steep. I pay about $1 each for them or don’t buy them. normally they are about 1.49 each out of season here but in season, you can get a bag of 6 for maybe 4 bucks from TJ’s or the groc store. Not to rub it in or anything :)
Mm that sounds good! I’ve never tried coconut milk.. but I’ve seen it everywhere!
This looks like the perfect “it’s spring but we have summer weather so I’ll celebrate” drink! :)
LOVE the smoothie. must try.
Yum – I bet that avocado with the banana gives this smoothie such an amazing mouth feel!
I would have never thought to have added avocado to a tropical smoothie! Yum!
Oh my gosh, I would DIE for this right now. I just want to reach through the screen and pick that coconut off the top and stuff it in my mouth.
mm, that smoothie sounds delish! I love coconut too, but I’ve never added it to my smoothies. Guess it’s time to try!
Jessica, come down here to LA….an avocado is 25 cents here. Never $4! That’s ridiculous!
Your smoothie sounds really intriguing! I’m not the biggest fan of avocados, but I would totally try that. And since you’re so into tropical…what about tropical fruits like durians?! Hee, I love durian!
Oh my God. I’m obsessed with blue corn chips. I can down a bag in 20 minutes. It’s ridiculous.
Smoothie looks amazing!! Thanks for sharing. I love anything with coconut and avocados, so them together -HEAVEN!
I never would have thought to put the avocado in there. I never used to like coconut, but now I love it. From sweets to savories can’t get enough of the stuff. nice smoothie!
I just bought avocados for $.88!!!!! Couldn’t believe my eyes.
Um… I’m 21 and I get really excited about good deals at the grocery store. I COUPON WITH PRIDE! no shame :)
looks delicious

This is so interesting!! ONe that I have never tried before!!
Love your posts Jessica! This one I have to try! I made a Vegan Chocolate Avocado Cake recently and am a believer in all things Avocado! You Rock!
Hey Jessica,
I love your blog, just had to say :)
I also LOVE coconut! What I do to satisfy a craving is slice up a banana, drizzle some honey on top and sprinkle tons of coconut on top and eat! Super yummy and great if you don’t have time/energy to make anything else.
Keep on posting!

Thanks so much, Vanessa! That sounds fabulous. :)
I wish I had your metabolism, girl!
PS. If calories were no object I’d live on this morning, noon and night :-)
I recently heard about putting avacados in smoothies, and have been dying to try it – this recipe sounds much better than the one the lady from work told me (that was just banana and avacado).
This looks great. I still haven’t tried a smoothie with avocado yet, but I can imagine how smooth and creamy it makes it. Yum!
Sounds delicious! This is so funny to me, because my kids drink avocado smoothies on a weekly basis. They’re so cheap here! (We live in the Middle East.)
Here is a pic of one of my pumpkins enjoying blended avocados…

This sounds and looks amazing! I will definitely try this.. This may have been mentioned already in the comments, but putting fruits in a brown paper bag helps them ripen much faster.
I bought an avocado for the first time and was dying to make something with it. I remembered your smoothie and decided to give it a try. I am not a fan of coconut, so I made it without and it was delicious! So delicious I had one for lunch and the another for my dessert after dinner!!
OMG – I am very much a fan of avocado and coconut; had one very sad and pathetic looking avocado here looking lost and lonely and decided to use it to make this smoothie – had to make it double since I wasn’t going to eat it the way it was. So, just finished half of it and the other half is in the freezer to have later; it will probably make a scrumptious dessert. :)
Just made this smoothie because I had all ingredients on hand and it was so different! I love avacados, bananas, and coconut, so I was sold. I’ve gotta say though…it’s kinda strange. It SUPER thick and almost like drinking yogurt. I could easily eat it with a spoon. The flavor is okay, but not very sweet or coconut-y. I think it could benefit from a little less yogurt, more banana or some sweetener (for the needed sweetness), and possibly more liquid to thin it out a tiny bit.
Some supermarkets sell pre-ripened avocados which have been treated with synthetic ethylene to hasten ripening. In some cases avocados can be left on the tree for several months, which is an advantage to commercial growers who seek the greatest return for their crop; but if the fruit remains unpicked for too long it falls to the ground.’`..^
