3 Ingredients.
I’m not usually one to follow trends, but these 3 ingredients have changed my life. I wouldn’t have even known about them if it wasn’t for blogging.
Kale.
Who woulda thunk it?! Greens on this blog?
Yes, kale is pretty much the only vegetable I eat weekly. And I only like it in chip form. I want to try massaged kale, but I’m afraid I’ll hate it like every other vegetable and then waste my precious kale. I can only find good kale at Whole Foods, which is a hop, skip and 60 minute drive away.
Nutritional yeast.
I had never ever heard of this stuff before I began blogging. I love it. It is slightly cheesy, slightly salty, and full of protein (10g per 2 tablespoons). I would never use it as a cheese replacement since I adore cheese, but it actually makes some vegetables edible for me.
Coconut butter.
The day I found out about coconut butter was the day the heavens opened up and the sun shone upon my face. As a coconut addict, this is solid gold to me. Or liquid gold, depending on the form you use it in. It makes my heart skip a beat.
So all I’ve really learned it… blogging has taught me to want very expensive food items.
What food items are you loving right now?

oh GAAH yes all of these.
nut butter also. ALL of them. :)
maybe not SUPER expensive, but sometimes elusive –> PUMPKIN !! :D
The guys at work have been making fun of me because I don’t like steak…and then said “That’s about as weird as saying you don’t like milk.” Wellllll…part true. I LOVE Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze. Mmmm I probably never would’ve given it a shot if it weren’t for the bloggies.
OMG coconut butter! Mmm…
I NEVER, ever would have eaten kale before being introduced into the blogging world. The first time I brought it home, my husband said ‘isn’t that the stuff I take off my plate at restaraunts?’ lol I took that kale and made chips with it and he was scared at first, but we both agreed… Kale chips ROCK! I’m actually suprised that the veggie haters loves KALE of all things :D
As for nooch… I’m the only consumer of this product. I love it and use it all the time, but the husband is a little afraid.
Before blogs, I remember staring at the nut butter section at TJ’s and not even noticing almond butter, sun butter etc. Now I can’t live w/o them.
I know this will sounds weird, but old fashioned oats cooked on the stove. I used to think I didn’t like oatmeal, but what I didn’t like were the sugary Quaker packets cooked in the micro (not knocking them, just don’t like em).
Chia seeds are my love. I use them pretty much everyday either in my oats or in a shake or smoothie. I’ve made puddings with them, but end up getting a little gaggy 1/2 way through. ;P
Spinach in shakes ?! I would NEVER NEVER NEVER done this, but it was all over all the blogs I was reading when I first started and had to try this for myself. Can’t taste it… suuuuuuuuuure. But ‘they’ were all right, I didn’t taste it at all and now never miss adding some greens to my shakes and smoothies.
Blogs have for sure changed my life for the better. Thanks to all the ladies who spend hours and hours AND HOURS working on their blog posts for us to enjoy! :D -m
I’ve never tried nutritional yeast, i’m kind of afraid too!
I’d say that 50% of my kitchen is now stocked with items I had no idea existed a year ago, or things that were already in my pantry but had no idea how to use or cook with!
I’m pretty open, so I’ll try anything once (I’m looking at you —->overnight oats and kombucha), some items have made it into semi-regular rotation (here’s to you tofu), and then there’s the “huh, who would have thought I’d be putting spinach in my morning smoothie every day and LIKING it” category.
Oh, and I have a ridiculous amount of nut butters in my cupboard, and homemade pestos in my freezer.
I haven’t tried any of these things! Bad blogger! :) The only thing that is really intriguing me is that jar of coconut butter. I could do big things with that butter….
I’m a longtime lover of Kale and most greens. Coconut butter is new to me from this post – Thanks! Can’t wait to experiment with it.
Right now I’m loving pumpkin seeds, Greek yogurt, and kale :)
At this minute, I’d say peanut butter, home grown green beans, and chicken thighs.
Ask me in 15 minutes, and it will probably be 3 different things!
Note to self: I must try kale chips!
I still can’t find coconut butter here! Right now I’m loving oatmeal w/ almond butter and banana or apples, crispy roasted green beans, and peanut butter M&Ms :)
I have never tried any of those things but I read about them all the time.
I discovered Barney Butter awhile back and LOVE it. Seriously love it.
I love me some kale with nutrition yeast :)
Oh gosh what haven’t I learned from blogs!? Kale and coconut butter are up there for me too – and green monsters, yoatgurt – so much! I need to try this nutritional yeast though!
Me again! What brand of nutritional yeast do you use? Thanks!!
I think it’s Innovative Quality? Honestly I really can’t tell but there is a picture in this post: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2010/07/10/some-how-sweet-grocery-staples/
And how did you shape those homemade larabars so perfectly?!
i love tomatoes being in season (here at least). sooo good. fresh marinara for dinner!
Sadly I actually have not tried any of those…well I guess I have eaten kale in mashed potatoes before, but never turned into kale chips or anything cool like that. I have been very curious to try nutritional yeast.
i am also obsessed with kale chips from blogs but have yet to try nutritional yeast… what are your favorite ways to use it?
Well the first – kale chips!
Second, I use it on roasted veggies like broccoli and cauliflower – makes them a bit more edible for me.
Also I have used it on salads, popcorn, among other things. I actually use it where ever salt and pepper can be used on something if I feel like I want something more “cheesy.”
Also, I know Averie from loveveggiesyoga has made homemade peanut butter cups with it! She has awesome recipes for is, like dips and vegan mac and cheese too.
oh thanks, i’ll have to check out her recipes!
Oh I am the queen of 3 ingredient recipes AND of nooch!
Here’s the nooch post I have that has 15+ recipes in it, all using nooch :)
http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2010/03/nutritional-yeast-nooch-info-10-recipes.html
LMK if you end up making anything, Lauren!
Jessica, you rock….I am soooo proud that you, the veggie non-lover, is a kale fan. And that you’re rocking one of the best vegan protein sources, nooch, and one of the best vegan fat source, coconut butter. Pretty soon you’ll be vegan. KIDDING :)
xoxo
Thanks lady! If it’s at Whole Foods I can hopefully find it…! And seriously – I just used my hands! The mixture is super soft and very easy to shape!
LOVE all of these, obviously. Massaged kale is good, but sometimes it gets a little gaggy for me, lol. But don’t worry, if you don’t like it, you can just throw it in the oven and turn it into chips! Also love nutritional yeast AND coconut butter!!! In the past few months, I’ve been really addicted to tomato paste. I used to use it mostly for thickening sauces, but now I use it as a spread and go through 1 jar/week! I get my nutritional yeast in a big tub at WF! [saw that abby asked]
Okay, if YOU don’t like massage kale, I’m not even trying it. Barf.
I have never heard of coconut but it sounds like something I would fall in love with the second I have it in front of me.
I’m going to have to pick up some nutritional yeast. I’ve never tried it but maybe it will help my husband eat more vegetables. He is very anti-veggie!
My sister says I look at the weirdest food stuff all the time – nut butters, almond flour, NUT BUTTERS, avocadoes, kale chips… And I’ve never had any of them. Ever. :(
I keep meaning to try nutritional yeast..thanks for the reminder!
Blogging has heightened my tastes…and my food expenses as well. Things really are good though.
I love Better ‘n’ Peanut Butter!! I got really excited when I finally found the Chocolate Better ‘n’ Peanut Butter but it’s not as good! And for almost $6 a jar that is a pretty penny! I’m going to put the Choc PB in cookies though and I’m sure they’ll be yummy with added sugar lol!
Still never tried the nooch. It seems like too much work for a non-cook like me.
HOWEVER I did just bake up a batch of spaghetti squash. Doesn’t take much work to hack it open and scrape it. I pair it up with pesto and pine nuts and it makes me lunches for a week! Jess, I reallllly think you should try it this fall :)
I can do spaghetti squash! Never tried it with pesto though… I gotta do that.
Oh, I love all food…how should I narrow this down. Nature’s Path Seseme Taragon Crackers are addicting, as well clementines. I can eat clementines one after another and never get sick of them.
Funny, I love most vegetables (especially raw), but I cannot stand kale chips. Craziness I tell you.
♥♥♥♥coconut butter♥♥♥♥♥
I am going to attempt to make my own next, because my first jar went way too quickly :(… I think that it will be more palatable for my wallet..
♥♥♥♥chia seeds♥♥♥♥♥
I keep playing with where I put these babies!! I’m loving them in my mango smoothies!
♥♥♥♥♥pumpkin beer♥♥♥♥ it’s that time of year again ;)
You have great taste girl… those are so SO good for you!!
I’ve never tried nutritional yeast. I know I need to, but the whole yeast thing just puts me off. I’m a child. I have tried kale chips many times, but to no avail. Sigh…
I’m loving brussels sprouts right now. And chocolate milk :) Not together though.
I bought brussels sprouts because of you. They are in my fridge and I haven’t got up the courage to make them yet.
Okay, so what exactly do you do with nutritional yeast and what do you put coconut butter on?
See the above comments for nutritional yeast ideas – I answered this a few comments up. As for coconut butter, I use it in oats, shakes, on sweet potatoes, with chocolate, in baking – the possibilities are endless!
Blogging has introduced me to oats in a different way – once I discovered the topping possibilities, I was hooked!! Now I can’t stop!!
Blogging introduced me to making my OWN coconut butter–> have you tried that?? It’s amazing! (and cheap!) You simply blend shredded, unsweetened coconut in a high-powered blender, like a Vita-Mix, until it’s CREAMY… so good!
And I just made my first batch of kale chips ever this week!! I think I need to experiment with some recipes to find the “perfect” batch, but I’m excited about the possibilities!
Never tried coconut butter or kale – but I am not too keen on the nutritional yeast. Well, I have only tried it once when I scooped a bit from the sample…er…wholesale bins at WF – maybe I’m missing something?! :-)
