Tuesday Things.
1. Last night my entire family went bowling and this was like the first time I’ve been bowling in probably, uh… 20 years. I am just fantastic. You should see me. I got a 44 for my first game, then a 38 for my second. Everyone REALLY wants to take me bowling again.
2. I got Mr. How Sweet lots of nice stuff for Christmas, and it turns out the only thing he really loves is the cheap remote control helicopter I gave him. It has saved my life. Like now I can scream, “go play with your helicopter!!!”
3. He got me lots of nice stuff for Christmas, but I still didn’t find a maid in my stocking. So he is currently upstairs cleaning the bathroom on his Christmas vacation.
4. Even though he didn’t get me the maid, he did get me the iPad 2… so tell me wise friends: which apps should I download? If there is one thing I succeed at it is spending money.
5. It’s definitely not bowling.
6. Oh and one more holiday related item: I stuffed his stocking with beef jerky, beef stick, Bone Suckin’ seasoning and… pumice stones. I swear he’s a man.
7. I have eaten out or eaten dinner at someone else’s house seven out of the last eight days. It has been GLORIOUS.
8. I have 8 billion cookies in my house. Please come over.
9. I want to make something delicious for New Years Eve but I have no idea what and I don’t go out because I’m secretly 95 years old and will probably fall asleep by 11:37 anyway. What should I make?
10. I can’t stop staring at this picture of Bella and I legitimately want to eat her face off.
11. Now that I’ve made this all about me, tell me what your goals are for 2012! I love goals. Goals schmoals. (<- it just sounded good.)

Oh and I forgot to add. I went Curling last night. I’ll never poke fun at one of my country’s national sport again. It’s not easy and I’m terrible!!
I don’t think you have to worry about any of us thinking Mr. How Sweet isn’t a man; he’d have to be a man to handle all that beef and Bone Suckin’ stuff! =) As for me, I’ve got lots of goals, but it isn’t because it’s the New Year; I set goals throughout the year whenever I feel like I need a “push”. For example, right now I’ve got a goal of losing 40 lbs and getting a book contract. Hooray!!
The picture of Mr. How Sweet and the helicopter is hilarious because I got our nephews (ages 12, 10, and 9) each a helicopter for Christmas, and my husband wanted to know why I didn’t get him one!
I tried an absolutely wonderful recipe last night! I will definitely do this again, and since I am newly divorced and live alone, I actually had leftovers so I get to enjoy it again for lunch! So what is it? A twist on chicken pizza! It was sinfully easy. One prepared pizza dough, chicken, mushrooms, onions, and zucchini, i can of cream of chicken soup, and some monteray jack cheese. Yum!!!
I cut up my chicken and seasoned with some garlic and pepper and then with a little olive oil browned it in the skillet. Once the chicken was done, I removed it and put my veggies in the skillet with the carmelized drippings from the chicken and then stirred in my soup, once they were cooked to perfection. I had already preheated the oven, with my pizza stone in it. So like I said very easy, just put veggie soup mix on the crust, top with chicken and cheese, bake 10-12 min at 450 F, done!!! A very simple easy meal for two (or one, like me and you get leftovers, lol). I just thought I would share. Have a Happy New Year!
My husband asked for the EXACT SAME helicopter this year and got it, lol. He is like a big kid. He loves flying it, and now we also have something to keep our 8 month old boxer puppy in line because she’s scared to death of it!
I’m a terrible bowler as well. Unfortunately, whenever I’m home with my old friends from high school it’s the first thing they want to do…(don’t judge us). I need to find someone I’m better then to befriend and tote along with me :) Looks like you had a great Christmas!

wow Bella is growing up but still amazingly adorable. re: bowling.. I always tell people that I’m trying to get the lowest score possible.. when in all actuality I suck. one time I bowled a 6 :) HA! it was possibly the greatest low score bowling I’ve ever done. If I were golfing.. I would be amazing
I was hoping for a maid from santa too.. but since that didn’t happen I guess I have to clean up my own baking mess. :(
happy new year!
Hehe, I think my highest ever score at bowling was 12. You’re doing great! ;)
Hahaha…I bought the same helicopter for my husband! The only problem is he keeps buzzing my head with it…while I’m trying to cook, do laundry, etc. You know how it is!
For years we’ve had friends over for nye and have done fondue. When we’re done eating we make predictions for the upcoming year. ‘These are put into the clean fondue pots and not looked at until the following nye. It’s always fun to see what came true. We tailor the questions to fit our families and add in lots of general questions (example: Academy award winners, price of gas). As we’ve aged we’ve changed it into a New York New Year’s Eve which means we celebrate midnight when it is really midnight in NY. Since we live on the west coast, that means we can start a whole lot earlier and stay awake the entire “night”. Fondue dinner has expanded over the years to about 10 entree foods to put into the oil, cheese and bread and about 8 sauces. It’s a great tradition to start. As for the Ipad, make sure you get the plug-in that allows you to download photos from your camera onto your ipad.
Okay, my son got that helicopter from us and now my husband wants one. They are crazy for the thing. I have to admit it is pretty cool. I might have to try the thing myself. Number one goal for 2012 is to get serious about my health and well being. Seriously.
I love bowling but haven’t been since the kids came along. Soon… maybe for my birthday in March. I can dream… big dreams right? :) Keep me posted on what awesome apps you find. I need to load my ipad up with stuff now too.
Don’t feel bad about staying home on NYE…I’m only 23 and my plans are to do just that, STAY HOME. I don’t get off work until 9 that night and I have to be back at 11am the next day. So I figured I’ll just stay home, watch the ball drop, and go to bed after that. Plus, I’m sick at the moment & on antibiotics, so not like I can really drink anyways. I’ll just make awesome food to eat that night, since January 1st will be my last day to “freely eat whatever my little heart desires.” So I’ll probably be making something from your blog for the last time for a while
My goals are to spend more time in Gods word, bake/cook more, run more than ever as well as get back into my glory days of running(haha), and to only drink “pop”(diet mtn dew addiction) on weekends. :)
I love the helicopter!
My husband and I went to a friend’s annual Christmas pot luck. We go to the weekly barbecues, but this was a first so we didn’t realize we were REALLY supposed to bring a tree branch and ornament to add to the tree. It was hosted by a boatbuilder, I should have known…
I brought a plate of holiday cookies: 2 Peas’ persimmon wonders, my husband’s oatmeal cookies, his sister’s fruitcake cookies. I hadn’t made Mother Lovett’s recipe’s yet.
My husband also made his hand-crafted whipped eggnog….mmmmmmmm!
And, we brought two white elephant exchange gifts! And….wait for it….we took home a HELICOPTER!
What a great holiday!
Happy new year!
PS: Finally made the Thumbprints….no color (we live on a boat) and cherries instead of frosting. GREAT, thanks!
Nothing wrong with staying home on NYE! I was thinking about doing the same this year…..and I’m 28 :)
My hubby got a remote control helicopter too!!! As far as goals for 2012…learning how to use my new “architect” kitchen aid mixer. love my husbands heart, i asked for the artisan, and he got a better deal on the architect, so I got an upgrade!!! He makes my heart beat fast! happy new year!
Congrats on the new iPad! I’ve had mine a few months now and love it. Flipboard is one of my favorites, especially for reading blogs and keeping up with twitter and Facebook. And I bet you’d really like the sephora app – it has an interactive catalog and a cool “virtual mirror” function that uses the front camera as a mirror while you watch how-to videos. Plus it’s free :)
Have you ever had pig wings? http://eatpigwings.com/ This is my uncle’s product. They are sooooooo good.
I like the fondue suggestion. Especially the “papers in the pot” idea. We usually spend the whole evening eating appetizers and stuffing ourselves with savory tidbits. This year we’re trying to re-train ourselves to stop grazing like cattle, roaming wild through the kitchen, consuming thousands of calories per hour. (OK, we had “stocking” for Christmas dinner…we ate only things that came in our stockings. Somebody has to stop the madness.)
So, I’m making cassoulet. I forget how good it is until the aroma is wafting through the whole house and we are salivating at the thought of eating it. It’s easy, you prep it before the guests come over, and it goes well with a simple green salad. How can a one-dish meal with sausage, chicken, and garlic be bad? If you don’t have a trusted cassoulet recipe, I’d be happy to share mine. All in the spirit of staying at home!
Well, since you asked… ;)
This year, rather than making resolutions, I’ll be making monthly mind, body, & spirit goals.
For January, my mind goal will be a daily crossword, my body goal will be 3 days/week of weights, and my spirit goal will be to learn how to keep a plant alive. I kill everything & the future mother-in-law gave me a lovely herb garden for Christmas. I WILL keep it alive!
I am going to try to make chocolate lava cakes for my husband for New Year’s… we don’t go out either. I have this thought I can never get out of my head that if I drive anywhere New Year’s Eve, I am sentencing myself to death because a drunk driver WILL hit me! :)
All that to say, you could make chocolate lava cakes, too! That would be my vote…
Ok, while baking MORE cookies to replace the ones we gave away … And still owe…
I love my ipad2!!!

So funny about #2! We got our 14 yr old son the same hellicoptor and my husband can’t stop playing with it either.
This is what you should make for New Year’s Eve: Filet Mignon with Garlic Shrimp Cream Sauce: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/filet-mignon-with-garlic-shrimp-cream-sauce/detail.aspx
I made it for myself last NYE, along with some mashed potatoes, and ate it on my couch in sweatpants watching Ryan Seacrest’s countdown and it was the best night. I wish I could repeat it this year, but I have to go and be all social at a party. Which does not sound fun because I too am 95 years old and will miss my sweatpants.
I could meet you somewhere in southern Pittsburgh or the South Hills if you want unload some of those cookies! I’m about an hour south of the Oakland area in Belle Vernon, my mom lives near West Mifflin.
Even though he laughs at me for reading “food porn”, my husband I an are making the kitchen spic’n’span (we really slacked since…the beginning of November) to make the Beer Mac’n’Cheese he had demanded I make! I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.

I’m doing two big projects in 2012, related to my scrapbooking/art journaling obsession:
1) Project Life, inspired by Becky Higgins. I’m going to record one memory each day, either with a photo or without (probably mostly without, because who the heck can remember to take a photo and print it out every day?!?) I have the binder and the inserts and the creative ideas ready to go!
2) One Little Word, with Ali Edwards, from Big Picture Classes. I wrote down a bunch of words which “spoke” to me and found that I wrote the word “EMBARK” down 3 times….fate intervened, and I am going to journal about things I embark upon all year. The class “meets” online once a month and will give me prompts and ideas in case I’m stuck, but since I just started a new job and my daughter goes off to Conservatory in Manhattan, NYC in February and I’m putting my house of 15.5 years on the market in the Spring/Summer, I don’t think I’ll have a lack of things to write/journal/document!
3) OK, here it is – get healthy. I need to lose weight, get my pre-diabetes under control, and exercise every day, at least a little bit. I hate this one (great attitude, right?!?) but I truly HAVE to do this. I am fortunate to have lots of support in my life, so I’m feeling positive about success, but dayum – I do love to eat, so it sucks it. Oh well. Two FUN projects, one not-so-fun one. Sounds OK to me!
So glad to know that my husband isn’t the only over-grown boy out there! This year he got a nerf dart gun. I shouldn’t complain, I bought it for him- but if I get shot one more time he’s gonna be in major trouble! He’d just die for a helicopter, but I don’t think I’m ready for that! :)
Oh man, the flying helicopter! My boyfriend and I spotted one at Costco last summer and he was obsessed with it! Fortunately for myself, it broke after about 5 months of use. Well, we bought my brother-in-law one for Christmas and I keep getting updated every single day as to where he landed it this time. Last text message I got, he had managed to land it on top of a ceiling fan’s blade. Pretty impressive if you ask me. :)
Great posting! Congratulations on the iPad–I’ll pass along a little tech secret from my tech-nerd hubbie:
(this also works for the iPhone 4/4S)
to prolong battery life, be sure to often check to see how many app’s are currently running, and then turn them off….Here’s how: When you are at your home screen, press the home button twice. All the app’s that are using the processor will be shown at the bottom. Put a finger on any one of them, and hold it there until they start shaking, and have a little red circle with a minus sign at the upper left corner. Tap the red circles to end them all. This does NOT interfere with how the app’s will work when you next use them.
Obviously, if you are listening to music, and you end that app, your music will stop, so only turn off the app’s you aren’t currently using.
Oh, yeah–my boys (hub + two teens) love their new RC helo, too!
Wow…thanks for this tip! I am a new iPad owner and didn’t know about this, but I just tried it and it worked! Thanks so much for sharing!
My absolute favorite iPad (and iPhone) app is Flipboard. It organizes all your social media, RSS feeds, etc. into one place in magazine format. Beautiful!
Oh, and get yourself a maid. I kept asking for one with no avail, so I just decided to do it. My husband was not happy about it for a month or so, but he’s stopped complaining, now. There’s nothing like coming home to a clean house!
My husband got a toy helicopter also and loves it!! Please FedEx your cookies to Texas as I have a whole group of people who would love you for sending them. I know the biggest group of cookie monsters around!
I have to say that I heard the BEST news today. A Trader Joe’s is opening in Plano, Texas this spring. The location is about 10 min from my apartment. I will now not feel like a loser everytime you speak of the amazing things you get from there because I can now run out and spend my entire paycheck there!! :)
Glad you had such an amazing Christmas and I hope you have the best New Year!!
Looks and sounds like a great Christmas!
My goal for 2012 is to finish up my masters degree and get accepted to the PhD program.
So fun that you got an ipad! And I sympathize with the millions of cookies left over. I get so excited to bake them all and then I just want them out of my site at the stroke of midnight on the 26th.
HAHAHA I definitely just busted out laughing because my Dad got the exact same helicopter for Christmas, he actually bought it for himself and wrote “To: dad, From: Dad.” The best part? Even after opening cookbooks, gadgets, movies, and tools, the only gift he’s used is the dang helicopter. I swear, he uses that thing for the ENTIRE six minutes and then immediately recharges the battery to play with it, yet again. Ummmm who’s the kid here?
what is on your hand !
Love the post, Jessica! My goal for 2018, is to spend more time with my kids. Work has been tying me up.
