Tuesday Things.
1. Even though I’ve had an iPhone for years, I’m still in disbelief what it can do when it comes to photography. That picture up there is strictly just taken with my camera on the iPhone, no app. I can’t even take a picture this fun with my DSLR.
2. We were also freaking out over the hydrangeas while in Nantucket. My husband planted some last year and is having a serious meltdown that they aren’t flowering like the ones we saw. I mean he was talking about ripping them out then entire trip. I told him to google SOS hydrangea rescue when we got home. Any tips on pretty hydrangeas? HALP.
3. I seriously though google reader was just not going away. I am talking complete denial. This morning I almost died. I know I talked about feedly over the weekend but I can’t figure it out and I hate change and just want to moan about it.
4. Can we talk about this outrageous shrimp burger? I’m losing it.
5. Are bodysuits seriously now a thing again? I can’t stress how uncomfortable this makes me. Yeah yeah, I’m probably just jealous that I could never sport one in a fashionable way. And they just bring me back to the days when I got a frizzy perm at the age of 10 and my mom said my hair looked like Roseanne Barr’s.
6. I’m waaaay behind on my couch potato schedule and since we got home late on Sunday night, I haven’t properly been able to form my thoughts on True Blood but omgomgomg Dexter! Let’s please discuss. If you don’t recall, two years ago Eddie and I watched the first season over Christmas “break” and then… I proceeded to watch the next five seasons in two weeks. TWO WEEKS. It’s amazing how much cooking you can get down when you place your iPad in the kitchen for 12 hours a day.
7. 22 ways to make your life neon. Do it.
8. We have come to the point during the summer where I listen to James Taylor constantly and nothing else.
9. Absolutely adoring this post from my friend Teri on life’s formula and being happy with where you are at right now. It’s great.
10. Over the weekend I shared my June beauty faves + other stuff. I feel like I already have so much more to add. Might have to do a halfway-through-the-month-I’m-a-hoarder post.
11. What fun things are you doing for the 4th of July? What are you making? I’m not sure if I’m making anything (I KNOW), but we will be at our super fun annual family partay. And it’s like an extended weekend! Totally. And in the next two days I’m sharing a throwback recipe that my mom always makes. I mean, it straight up tastes like 1995.

I love your blog. Don’t think I’ve stopped by to say so before, but I do :)
Thanks for the great giveaway!
My Google Reader is still working…now I’m terrified to open it up tomorrow in case it’s gone – I thought maybe I was just lucky? ha.
WHAT!!!! are you serious??
Yep! I was all concerned and signed up for Feedly…didn’t really like it so I tried logging in and it works? Maybe there’s some strange ‘not discontinued in Canada’ thing?
Who knows!
They are deleting Reader data after July 15th, so you should still export your info.
I use Feedly – athe app was great and I like the web interface. But after the “cloud migration”, the app is not so great.
Oh, crap. Is 1995 really “throwback”? I’m old.
What a fun giveaway….hope I win!
I also need some help with my hydrangeas. They nearly died after we went on vacation and our area experienced an unexpected heat wave. Now they are suddenly growing brand new leaves out of nowhere. So I cut off all the old blooms which I’m not sure was the right thing to do but it is still working on those leaves. Even before that they looked kind of pale and sad….so I feel your pain.
So I didn’t like Feedly when I made the switch either! I saw another blog post both Feedly and another option that I happen to like MUCH better (and looks like a nicer-designed version of Google Reader, hence its name…), which is: The Old Reader. When you get your stuff imported, just hit “all items” and it should feel familier!
Oh em gee I made those Shrimp Burgers the other night after I got the email and they are TO DIE FOR. I didn’t get them to hold together well BUT the entire family gobbled them up. Hooey! For the 4th it’s our Annual Ribfest! About 20 of us get together, make ribs, and judge the best! Lots of goodies to be had including corn salad, 7 layer salad, artichoke pesto pasta salad, yum! Fun cocktails too, of course! Boating, jetskiing, floating…all the good stuff! Have a great 4th!!
I live in Mass and have never been to Nantucket…soooo jealous! Such a fun giveaway too…would love to win!
I think you need to leave beauty faves as a once a month dealio, because its starting to turn ME into a hoarder too. lol.
I live on Martha’s Vineyard and have never been over to Nantucket – come to the Vineyard sometime its nicer :0)
I told my husband the first thing that we are doing when we get a “real” house is planting hydrangeas, so figure out their problems now garden-man.
For hydrangeas – the color is based on the pH of the soil. My parents have blue hydrangeas and “feed” the soil with pickle juice (no lie). They claim it makes them more vibrant. :)
That luscious jar of Fleur de Sel has my name ALL OVER IT!!!
The color of the hydrangeas depends on the soil pH, like someone mentioned above. So you can alter the color by adding different fertilizers or whatever to the soil – I can’t remember what exactly my parents used to use but the pickle juice trick is new to me! Good luck :)
Re: Hydrangeas. The old fashioned ones bloom on OLD growth i.e. the flower buds are set in the fall and bloom the following year. Two things can make hydrangeas fail here in the ‘burgh (yep- that’s where I garden). 1. a late frost/freeze can kill the flower buds and 2. pruning once the buds have set, either last fall or this spring, and cutting of the buds. The solution is to purchase the new hybrids which grow on old and new growth. The most common is “Endless Summer”. If we get a late freeze the flowers from the previous year will not bloom, but the plant puts out new growth and it will flower the current year. As for the blue flowers, your soil must be acidic. Never heard of pickle juice! Lots of tips on the web for this.
Funny, you and I share a birthday and a fondness for all things pink and glittery. The difference in our age shows here: my Mom would say my hair looked like Janis Joplins!!
Lots of hydrangea fans here! Mine did exceptionally well this year, even with a couple of late Spring freezes. That meant being frozen myself while gently covering them, and tucking them in for the cold nights. I think I live in a much warmer climate than you, but they do seem to prefer only morning sun or mostly shade. They also require much more water than most gardeners realize. I have found drip hoses, or watering by hand is much better than sprinklers. It is the ground and their roots that need the moisture, not just the leaves. When I relied only on sprinklers, the moist leaves often developed a fungus which killed the plants. Other comments about pruning are correct. Older varieties bloom on old wood. Kind of ugly during some parts of the year, but it will reward you with lovely blooms later! I have also had great luck with a hydrangea in a large clay planter. It is on a wheeled coaster, and I can move it when it seems to be getting too much or too little sun. Don’t give up! They are worth the extra time and care! And, thanks for always sharing such gorgeous photos and recipes!
Love the neon list!
Little known fact about Hydrangeas, the buds and leaves are very sensitive to frost. The gardening center I love told me to cover them in the Spring and Fall to prevent frost from killing the buds (which are located in the same place as the leaves). They said that’s the number one reason people come in saying their hydrangeas won’t bloom, or won’t bloom well. Worth a shot :)
