Amaretto Apple Crisp.
I have come to a conclusion.
My love for fruit is simply so deep, expansive and passionate that it left no room for any vegetable fondness. And that’s the reason – fruit always wins for me.
[Well that… and maybe the sugar content. I mean, just maybe.]
There isn’t a fruit that I don’t adore but much like everything else, I think fall fruits are my favorites. Apples were the building blocks for my very first snacks – the first ones I remember: lots of peanut butter or plainly sprinkled with cinnamon. I was so nuts over apples that occasionally I even ate them for breakfast before school. [There are about four emoticons that I wish I could place after that last sentence. Story of my LIFE.]
As with all other tangible objects in my life, it’s difficult to truly choose what fruit I like best. Strawberries usually win for me, but I can only get good ones for a few months during the summer. Blueberries too, but it’s the same deal. I often go for mangos and peaches – only to end up throwing them in salsas. And bananas – obviously. Giant love for those.
Here’s the thing about apples for me – they are reliable. Usually you can tell the state of an apple by checking out the outside – whereas things like avocados, those peaches and mangos and even cartons of berries can be deceiving in this climate. There is usually at least one variety of apple that I am able to find year round – that tastes and looks fantastic AND is organic. Yeah, of course I wish honeycrisps existed year round… but they don’t. And that’s what makes them so desirable. Right?
Apples are just… easy. And they’re portable and versatile and filling. A handful of berries does not fill me up like a big, old apple.
Okay. I have no idea why I’m talking about this. Point: apples FTW.
Before tossing these cute little chunks in the oven, I doused them in a heavy hand of amaretto and brown sugar. HELLO. Freaking flip out. I topped the whole thing with my favorite crumbly crisp oatmeal topping and dumped in a big cup of the trader joe’s honey roasted almonds. Dude. Those things are addicting. Random sort-of-related-but-not sidebar: many mornings I eat a handful of those almonds and some apple slices for a snack.
[It would be nice to stay on track for once, said everyone who reads this blog.]
I’m pretty sure it’s no secret that this is one of the only ways I will accept fruit for dessert. Apple crisp with a kick. I love making crisps and crumbles and serving them hot with ice cream – but the other awesome thing is that they are easily reheatable for breakfast. Yep.
See how much we learn here?
Amaretto Apple Crisp with Toasted Almonds
Ingredients
crumble
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- 3/4 cup loosely packed brown sugar
- 1/3 cup sliced, toasted almonds
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon amaretto liqueur
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Add the apples to 9×13 baking dish (or a large skillet) and toss them with the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Pour the amaretto over top and toss the apples.
- In a bowl, stir the oats, brown sugar, almonds, flour, cinnamon and salt. Add in the vanilla extract and amaretto, then add the butter. Use your hands to incorporate the butter until it is evenly distributed and you have a crumbly mix. Sprinkle it evenly over the apples. Bake the apples for 40 to 45 minutes, until the crisp is golden brown and the juice is bubbly underneath. Remove the dish from the oven and serve the crisp hot with ice cream.

I am drooling over your apple crisp! Apple crisp is one of my all time favorites! I love it so much! Yours looks so thick and inviting!!! I want a bowl for breakfast!!! Perfect way to start the weekend!!
I think that apples are my favorite fall dessert and strawberries are my favorite spring/summer dessert/fruit by far. The idea of amaretto in an apple crisp sounds amazing! Nice way to kick it up a few notches!
While apples are my absolute favourite, I can not go pass a good pineapple or kiwi fruit. I have a thing for hairy, piney fruit!
So easy and love that you made it in the skillet. IT makes it so homey. Lovely recipe!
Ooh this sounds sooo good! I totally agree – apples, although so plain relative to other more exotic fruits, are reliable. I adore fruit and like you, can’t pick a fave. I eat heaps of watermelon in the summer, and peaches are awesome too when they’re perfectly ripe, but just like Forrest Gump says about the box of chocolates, “you never know what you’re gonna get until you open it up”. I anticipate lots of apple crisps this fall!
I love all things amaretto and I bet amaretto with apples is a killer combo!!! You are awesome!
My husband and I totally aren’t fruit dessert people unless it’s something like this served with ice cream. If no ice cream, no dice.
Oooo, apple crisp… I want it for breakfast, now!
Well I do do love veggies, fruits are probably my favorite too! I am not normally a warm apple dessert person, but lately I am into it. This looks awesome!
Yum! What a decadent treat!
I completely agree with you. I have always loved fruit a bit more than veggies. The toppping looks to die for!
This looks soooooo good! I’m traveling right now, and I almost wish I was back home home so I could make some right now! I’ve got a bag of Honeycrisps all ready to go!
Fruit crisp for breakfast is one of my all time faves. I mean, why restrict this goodness to only one meal of the day?
Absolutely LOVE!
Whoaaaa man. this looks awesome!!
Ok, so I love this post. Cause I love apples, apple crisp, and all things sweet and cinnamon-y.
But. The last sentence in this post is my favorite. Fall recipes FTW!
I have a serious weakness for amaretto. This looks DELICIOUS!
Oooh my sweet tooth is going crazy this morning!! :) This looks DELICIOUS!
Apple crisp is at the top of my all-time favorites list. This looks SO GOOD
You say you hate coffee, but where you super caffeinated when you wrote this? Reading it made me super happy; it was a great way to start this Friday.
*were! Dang! MY brain is too caffeinated to type.
ha! i actually DO sort of like coffee now, but no – not caffeine at the time. i’m just insane.
I want this for breakfast!!! Gimme.
Seriously, apples for the win. Strawberries and blueberries are a close second. I can’t wait to see what other Fall treats you have in store!
So many fond memories of my childhood revolve around apple crisp. This was my moms ‘go to’ dessert since it was warming and fed a crowd. Plus, living in Ohio as a child, there were tons of orchards and we had two apple trees that produced like crazy!!
Heck yeah for eating it for breakfast too. That and any kind of fruit pie. Thanksgiving pumpkin, pecan, and apple pie = best breakfast the next day!
TOTES into this! Have never thought to spike a crisp (I know, shocking) but it makes perfect sense.
You had me at amaretto.
Girl. Don’t EVER worry about getting offtrack. Your wonderful rambling is part of why I read your blog! Apples are also my favorite fruit. Speaking of, I’m eating one for breakfast….and I’ll be eating THIS for dessert! YUM.
I met someone yesterday that didn’t like bananas. It was the weirdest ever. Anyways, moving on because I just can’t even understand not liking bananas….I love this recipe! It also makes me want an amaretto sour…at 8:30am.
my husband sort of doesn’t like bananas. it’s weird – he only likes them GREEN.
DUDE. I totally have a Amaretti-Pear Crisp on deck!
So, obvi, I like this. Duh.
Yum!! I LOVEEE Honeycrisps!! I nearly cheered when I saw them at the grocery store last week!
i read this as you cheered when you saw me at the grocery store last week. i’m going crazy.
I would totally cheer if I saw you at the grocery store!! :)
I love when something as simple as apple crisp is amped up like this to be something totally amazing. Great job!
I love your love for apples. insert: heart emoticons
Seriously need this in my life! Like yesterday!
I tried to track my calories once (you know, just for some giggles) and I was way over what I’m supposedly supposed to be eating, and most of the calories came from an excess amount of sugars because of all the fruits I eat during the day. So, I stopped tracking my calories, haha, because if a method is telling me to eat less fruit, that just seems silly!
P.S. Love amaretto+fruit. WINNING!
I can’t have amaretto OR almonds…any suggestions for alternatives?
ah bummer! you can probably just leave the amaretto out – it may not be quite as syrupy. and you can definitely leave the almonds out – if you click on the link in the bottom of the recipe (to the blueberry crisp) i make the crumble without almonds!
Apple crisps are one of my favorite fall treats, the apples are just so amazing this time of year! definitely need to give this a try, looks fantastic :)
Happy Blogging!
Happy Valley Chow
Ahhhhh, shuck! Did you make this for me? Because it looks like you did. :D I LOVE apple crisp. Not only is it an amazing dessert (especially with ice cream), but it can pull double duty for breakfast!
Combining apples and amaretto is SUCH a great idea! Love that you’ve used it both in the filling and the topping. Double amaretto fun! And you’re absolutely right — those almonds from Trader Joe’s are amazingly addictive. : )
I always feel like it’s not officially fall until I have some sort of apple crisp. And adding the amaretto to this sounds genius.
You know when the backs of your cheeks kinda pucker when something smells/looks THAT delish? Yeah, mine totaly did that just now. OMG
Oh.My.Gosh. Apples AND Amaretto? You are speaking my language…this looks ahmayzing!! And so perfect for the fall!
a fruit crispy really beats all, so much better than the pie. but wait, is it okay if i make some extra topping just for me?

This is SUCH a Friday recipe. LOVES.
An amaretto sour was the first drink I ever drank underage in a bar :) I love amaretto so much. When most people were ordering beer or vodka, I was drinking amaretto so I know I’d flip for this!
Pretty sure this dessert would make anyone weak in the knees.
I am totally with you on the fruit love. Strawberries and bananas are my top ones – but apples are more reliable and don’t go bad as quickly. This apple crisp looks totally awesome! I want to plant my face in it :)
[It would be nice to stay on track for once, said everyone who reads this blog.] —- made me laugh. And this looks absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to see what else you do with apples. and maybe peanut butter. and maybe topped with some fresh whipped cream, happy fall!
I’m totaly amazed with the beautifull pictures.. i wish have that eye for detail that you have.. everthing looks perfect
I totally share your love for apples (only in the fall, though. In the summer, it’s peaches every day.) I could honestly eat apples all day (I practically do that already). Usually it’s plain, sliced apples, but this crisp looks meltingly amazing.
Oh man, this was delicious! I made it earlier in the day so I would only have to reheat it after dinner. One corner seemed to go missing as soon as it came out of the oven though :) I served it with dulce de leche ice cream on top and we devoured it.
Just an fyi, you say to put cinnamon in the apple mixture but don’t list how much. I have no idea how much I added, but it was great.
Thanks for yet another amazing recipe!
oh my. i NEED TO MAKE THIS! only now i need a special occasion,
i’m reading this right after my boyfriend said he doesn’t like fruit nor alcohol in his dessert… i’ll find a way, i always do!
xp, cheyenne
We had an apple tree in our backyard that the squirrels would decimate yet I never took it down for one reason. Apple Crisp. I just love the stuff; it might be a cousin to apple pie but it is the BEST cousin! My recipe is 30 years old and has both Amaretto and Grand Marnier so I know intimately what that kick does to a relatively humble dish. Fabulous!
