Easy Homemade Mallo Cups.
This is so appropriate.
You know, this time of year when there are approximately 740 king-size candy bars in my house and then someone decides to MAKE their own candy. That someone.
Totally normal.
By the way, you probably think otherwise but it’s surely my husband who insists on handing out the massive sugar-coma inducing bars to trick or treaters at our house every year. It’s like his thing. He doesn’t really want to socialize with the neighbors but he wants everyone to think we’re cool enough to give big ass candy bars. I don’t disagree at all – my brothers and I basically wanted to throw a rager when we discovered the houses that gave out the big candy bars. But I’d be cool with some normal size peanut butter cups or something like that, for sure. You picking up what I’m throwing down????
Because.
There is a certain person who has to work from their house on November 1st when there is a neon purple bowl (of course) filled to the brim with chocolate and peanuts and caramel and crisped rice and peppermint and omgallofthecandy. It’s like a taunting lesson in self-control. IT’S SO MUCH FUN!
No really.
So you’ll always hear me say that my favorite candy bar is a good old snickers. And it definitely is. It’s my classic, predictable choice. BUT.
Then there are mallo cups. They are in a whole other league for me, almost a little sugary delicacy because I only ever got them once a year at Halloween. What is ridiculous because I’m pretty positive that they are or were “manufactured” (oh that just sounds delicious) only an hour or two away from where we live. They just happened to be that certain candy that I nearly forgot about every single year until I spied one in my pillowcase dressed in my full out Jem costume.
You know the deal – how I used to scour my brothers’ candy treasures for snickers bars… but everyone freely gave up their mallo cups. What the what? It blew my mind because they are so darn good. Even my husband was like, “ugh mallo cups? Those were disgusting.”
UM NO. They are perfect. Perfect little marshmallow chocolate pillows.
It should come as no surprise that I go nuts over them since it’s simply a gooey center of marshmallow cream. Only go a little bananas over that. I think it’s the touch of coconut that throws a lot of people off, but that’s obviously not an issue with me either. I’m not sure that I’m as obnoxious with anything as I am with coconut.
Okay maybe brown butter.
And bacon. But that’s it.
Chocolate, marshmallow, coconut. Is this real life?
While I’m definitely not suggesting handing out homemade Halloween candy (would you eat it? I mean, I would never eat it. I’m a giant scaredy cat. My parents would probably never let me eat it back in the day either.), these are a super fun treat to make for your friends or family on this spooky holiday.
Orrrrr…. yourself.
Stashed in the freezer. On hand for all of time.
Why the heck not?

Homemade Mallo Cups
Ingredients
- 12 ounces milk chocolate
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 cup marshmallow fluff
- 1/3 cup unsweetened, flaked coconut
homemade marshmallow fluff
- 2 large egg whites
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 2/3 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Line a standard size muffin tin with muffin liners. Chop the flaked coconut into small pieces.
- Melt the chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave (if you use the microwave, do it in 30 second increments then stir to prevent burning). Once the chocolate has just melted, stir in the coconut oil until it has melted. Spoon about 1 – 1 1/2 tablespoons of chocolate into the bottom of the muffin liners and use a spoon or pastry brush to bring the chocolate up over the sides. Sprinkle the chocolate with a teaspoon or so of the coconut. Use as much as you want! You can’t go wrong here. Stick the chocolate in the fridge or the freezer for 20 minutes, just so it sets up and becomes firm.
- Spoon about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the marshmallow fluff into the chocolate cups. Sprinkle the remaining coconut over the top of the fluff. Put the muffin tin back in the fridge or freeze so the marshmallow firms up, another 20 minutes or so.
- If the remaining melted chocolate has started to firm up, re-melt it. Spoon it over top of the cups and smooth it out. Place the tin back in the fridge or freezer for another 20 minutes before serving. I love keeping these cold – otherwise they can be a bit messy.
homemade marshmallow fluff
- Add the egg whites and cream of tartar to the bowl of your electric mixer. Using the whisk attachment, beat until the egg whites are frothy. Add the corn syrup, sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat until the mixture boils. Let boil for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sugar reaches a temperature of 240degrees F on a candy thermometer.
- With the mixer on medium speed, gently pour the hot syrup into the egg white mixture. Add the vanilla extract and the salt, then increase the mixer speed to high and beat until stiff peaks form, about 5 minutes. Store the fluff in the fridge.

I’m quite a bit older than you and remember mallo cups from the grade school school time. The bottom card stock was stamped with pictures of dimes, pennies, nickels and quarters to save up for prizes. I’m going to make them for the first time, using store bought fluff, but I remember mallo cups with toasted coconut, so I’m going to do that, very carefully, and add to remaining chocolate for the top. If you are familiar with Zitner coconut crack eggs, that is similar. Wish me luck!

Any chance you would make white chocolate mallow cups? I lived in Hollidaysburg and 2 years ago we retired to WV. When we come up we load up with mallow cups and Middlesworth Potato Chips. Thank you for your time. Carol Miller
Hi Carol. I was born and raised in Greenwood, Pa and went to school with the Boyer sisters. Their parents owned Boyer Brothers, Inc.. I ate a lot of Mallowcups. I just ordered four pounds! I can’t wait for them to be delivered!

I tried this recipe last Christmas and it was just like eating the mallo cups I ate as a child. Mallos are very nostalgic for me as they remind me of my Dad. He had a sweet tooth and would buy Mallos at the drugstore. He would have loved the homemade version of a classic favorite. Great recipe! I plan to make them again this CHristmas.

When I was a kid, we would go to Fannie May and get their marshmallow cups. It was a light minty cloud of the creamiest marshmallow I’ve ever had, covered in their delicious milk chocolate. I may just have to make both!
I loved the marshmallow cups but I have some mallow left how long will it keep in the fridge ?

Valomilk was always my favorite. They had no coconut in them but otherwise, they were the same. I am going to try your recipe minus coconut. Not sure what kind of oil too use. Would you have any idea? I absolutely love this candy. Whenever we visited a Cracker Barrel Restaurant, I would make sure to hit the candy section for my Valomilk. Ummmmmmm.

I saw these one night laying in bed and told my wife i HAVE to make these for you and the kids. So the next day i woke up (while watching my Buffalo Bills win their first playoff game in 25 yrs WOOHOOOO) i had to make this treat heh. My daughter has a laundry list of food allergies so i had to improvise a few i made half the batch the way your recipie calls for minus the coconut oil cause i didnt have it but otherwise turned out fantastic afterwards wifey said you shoulda toasted the coconut flakea tho so next time im doing that, but i also did some with no coconut and some others with peanut butter fluff all which were very very good will never buy mallow cups again thank you very much!!!!
So is there a substitute for coconut oil?
You can use Crisco shortening in equal amounts to substitute for the coconut oil in this recipe.
Did the manufacturer put coconut in the original mallow bars? I don’t remember .
The original Mallow Cups had toasted coconut mixed in with the milk chocolate. Not a lot of it mixed in, but you knew it was there by the texture. I don’t believe omitting the coconut would effect the taste all that much. Personally, I love the addition of toasted coconut!
Perfect! Tastes just like the original and it can be made in your kitchen. I love the taste.
This recipe is appreciated.
Hi! Can I use chocolate chips? Or do you need the baking chocolate?
Do you have to add the coconut flakes?
Can you use store bought marshmallow fluff instead of making it.??
I know exactly where the are manufactured. We vacationed there for Xmas this year. When I saw mallo cup. I had to click and see. Thank you. I’m probably gonna mess it up really bad though. Just an excuse to go see my BFF in altoona
Can the milk chocolate chips be substituted with dark chocolate chips, without having to change the rest of the recipe? I’m not fond of the milk chocolate Mallo Cups, but I love the dark chocolate ones.
If you ever find yourself in Buffalo NY (western NY) go to Antoinette’s candy, and ask for Charlie Chaplin. I promise you won’t regret it.
Can I replace the coconut oil with shortening, and the flaked with finely chopped nuts. Family member is extremely allergic to coconut?
