Real Life Wednesday: Little Life Slices.
You guys. IT’S ALMOST SPRING! I can feel it. See it. Taste it.
I’m all over it.
Last Wednesday I did a fun thing with a video camera. No no. It’s not how it sounds.
It’s good. It’s for you. Still not how it sounds, but you know. It’s all about spring stuff and food, obviously.
I made some crafts and cooked some food with my friends at delallo and we videotaped it. See? Not what you thought. If you’ve been reading my blog for five minutes you might know that delallo is my favorite place in the universe because, um, THIS:
I want to live in the store.
Also, they make me want to be a bread person. As in, a person who lives for bread. I am not one. Yet.
All last week I lived on eggs-in-holes. So underrated. One of my favorite things ever. In fact, it’s like 9:28PM as I’m writing this and I’m about three seconds away from heating up a skillet and cutting a heart out of my bread for a little egg space. So good.
Can we talk about something else I’ve been consuming almost daily? Spirulina. It tastes like pond scum. Oh yes it does. Also, a terrible side note: mine might almost be expired. Almost being the key word because I haven’t died yet. Anyhoo. I buy mine at Whole Foods. I tend to only drink a few smoothies per week because, hello, I really like to chew my food. I used spirulina ages ago but couldn’t deal, probably because all of my blenders sucked.
This would also probably be a good time to tell you that I got a Vitamix.
I HATE MYSELF.
I know. I am the biggest hypocrite to ever walk the face of this planet. For years, I have sworn up and down that I would not buy one. I’d very much rather buy a pair of shoes (still true) or a way-too-pricey bag (still very very true) or even take like three trips to Whole Foods (because that’s probably the amount of times it would take to rack up that bill). But. I caved. For a few months after I got it, my Ninja blender was awesome (like the blade cut me multiple times during washing, that’s how sharp it was) and then it majorly dulled. It wouldn’t fully puree things, especially greens like spinach and kale, and if I even THINK that I might have to chew something green in a smoothie? I’m done. Over with.
So I bit the bullet. Not to be confused with the magic bullet, which I also loathed for a time. Yes, it took me going through FOUR different types of blenders in four years to see the light. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you the first time. No more mistakes.
The moral of this very pointless story is that one day last week I felt like absolute garbage. Just run down and blah. So I made a smoothie with some coconut water and spinach and all sorts of good stuff that I normally use and threw in some spirulina. Pond scum smoothie. I felt like a million bucks within an hour. I’m a believer. I’m hooked. Call me a marketer’s dream but I.am.sold. No more smoothies without the green stuff. I’ve felt like a dream every single day since.
Hmmm. What else. A few weeks ago we ate at Umi and it was so freaking good that I can’t stop thinking about it. The sawara! The rock shrimp! I’ve been wanting more ever since. Craving craving craving.
That is a gigantic sprig of basil (do we call basil “sprigs?” probably not.) in my cocktail and it was fantastic.
This past Friday I made a massive pot of homemade chicken stock with all organic ingredients and the leftover carcass from a roasted chicken. Simmered it for eight hours. Turned it off to let it cool. Then straight up FORGOT ABOUT IT. Gosh, what is wrong with me? I then remembered when I saw it on Saturday afternoon, hours and hours later. Major bummer. What a flake.
I haven’t been reading much. I know. It stinks. It’s because I’m spending all of my free time on a writing project that is hopefully making my dreams come true. It’s hard. It’s overwhelming!
I get overwhelmed with things and then I just do nothing. It’s a terrible habit/issue.
Say hello to my life. Working on it.
Oh except in my free time I did do some things. Like grill outside (lies, my dad did the grilling). Eat buffalo chicken pizza. Take my BFF some cupcakes for her birthday and also squish her twins’ faces, who happen to be facebaby’s sisters, one of who also happens to be my goddaughter.
And eat my first froyo of the season.
Damn you instagram for ratting me out.
Yesterday I made goat cheese ice cream. Tomorrow I am making a million grilled cheese sandwiches for a bunch of people including invisible internet friends. Today I’m going to lock myself in a room and do nothing until I get everything I need to do done. Make sense?
So. What’s new with you?

HAHAHAHAH I love your description of Spirulina! I was describing it more as fish food when people asked me, but I guess we are on the same lines. That is the perfect description, I think I may use yours instead. It is so damn good for you though! That is one thing all those people who say healthy eating tastes disgusting are right about!
Ahhh I cant wait to grill!!! Not long hopefully, and those cupcakes are making me want to stuff my face before yoga….that would not be good! Have a wonderful Wednesday!
YAY welcome to the Vitamix club! I promise, you won’t be hating yourself for long because buying one was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I figure that since I use it so much, I’ve probably got it down to just a few cents per use now. Totally worth it. Can’t wait to see your grilled cheese creation – and on that note, have you seen the one on Foodie Crush this morning? oh.my.goodness. Good luck with all your to-do’s today!
Aghhh! Even I feel overwhelmed just hearing about everything that’s going on in your life! But yes, feeling overwhelmed makes me completely unproductive. It’s not even logical, but yeah, happens all the time.
I’m SO glad that you decided to go for it and get the Vitamix–> I’m hoping my commentary on that original post helped sway you.
if you’re ever bored with your smoothie, check out simplegreensmoothies.com. they have lots of fun recipes.
Congrats on your Vita. Yep, life changer. I think I’ve had mine since about 2007? and it is still as ferocious and strong as the day I bought it! And glad your pond scum smoothie hit the spot :)
And your writing project that’s making your dreams come true hopefully…I am wishing you the BEST!!!!!
I LOVE DELALLO! Their Talonica bread can change your life! So incredibly good! I won’t buy bread anywhere else. I’ve been wasting a lot of gas driving out there a few times a week, however my pantry is FILLED with croutons!
yes talonica bread is life changing – seriously.
I absolutely adore these posts. your style of writing makes it feel like we’re all just sitting around, having a great conversation. talk about a great way to start a wednesday :)
also – GOAT CHEESE ice cream?!? i die.
I’ve done the same thing with homemade chicken stock and it’s so so sad.
Congratulations on the Vitamix! We’ve had ours for 5 years now and the blades are still as sharp as the first day. Can’t believe it.
Pond scum. Tasty! :)
I LOVE my Vitamix. I bought a refurbished one, which I broke because I like to make smoothies with almost no liquid and expect the frozen fruit to magically blend. Yeah, but they fixed it free of charge and it’s been perfect ever since!
So, what did you do with the stock? You’ll think I’m gross, because I would have kept it. It was all cooked and it’s not hot out, so I think it would be fine. This is coming from a girl who takes caution to the wind and eats expired dairy (like months after expiration). I’m still alive! :)
I keep telling my parents that when I graduate law school I want a Vitamix to be my graduation present. They think I’m joking, but we all know that food bloggers do not joke about Vitamixes!
Are those cupcakes from the place in regent square – vanilla something or other I think… I dunno but if they aren’t you need to go there asap…
yes! from vanilla pastry. :)
I take Spirulina in tablet form, not sure if its as nutrious?
I am still on the ‘no way am I paying $600 for a blender’ bandwagon. But honestly, if my husband gave the ok to drop that kind of $$ on a blender, I would. I just cannot justify the price (I would rather chunky smoothies and spend the $$ on a ticket to somewhere warm for a week of sun!)
i think as long as it’s pure spirulina, it’s just as good?
“I get overwhelmed with things and then I just do nothing. It’s a terrible habit/issue.” story of my life! i love these posts because i feel like we’re friends catching up over coffee every week. keep them coming!
I am so confused by “facebaby’s sisters”. Isn’t one of the twins a boy? Or are there two incredibly cute sets of twins in your life and I’m REALLY confused?
facebaby is almost 3 now – last summer my bff (his mom) had twin girls!
Ok yep I was totally confused. I was thinking of bevcooks’ babies!! Facebaby’s sisters are super cute! :)
You’re some sort of hero who eats salad with pizza and I will never be able to do that. If I’m eating pizza, I’m eating ALL the pizza.
i am weird and when i eat pizza, it’s the only time that i REALLY want a salad! maybe has to do with the tangy vinegar thing?
Are you excited / nervous / scared for tomorrow’s cooking class?!? I am coming to the one in June and can’t wait.
Good Luck!!
super excited!!
Blentec vs Vitamix. I have neither but when i finally spring for one i still don’t know which i’ll choose! Any advice? thoughts? How’d you decide on the Vitamix?
i think it’s really a crapshoot – i hear good and bad about both. i chose vitamix because i feel that i’ve heard more about it over the last 5 years consistently.
I bought my Vita right around Christmas. I told my husband we adopted a small child. I make everything in it. Have you whipped your coconut cream in it yet? Um, yeah. Have you made honey roasted cashew butter in it yet? Yes. Do. And yet, every time I use it, I hold my breath and sometimes stop it early bc I’m scared! I’m so scarred by bad previous blenders that I’m waiting for it to blow up at any second! haha
i am also afraid of mine, haha.
I think you mentioned once that you wanted to write Women’s Fiction, so I REALLY hope that’s your secret project! Let me know when I can pre-order.
egg in a hole (toad in a basket, whatever you wanna call it) is SO UNDERRATED. seriously. amazing breakfast deliciousness.
i got my future hubby hooked on green smoothies. he asked to try one after i had been having them for a few weeks straight as my breakfast and he SWEARS he can feel the difference b/w a day when he has it and a day when he doesn’t. now he requires two a day, and is considering even more. So even though I think he’s totally nuts, maybe you guys are onto something. (I always picture Popeye and his spinach when he’s going on about how amazing he feels after drinking a smoothie).
Those last three pictures make me so hungry! I need to get on that buffalo chicken pizza. Also, FUN FACT, we studied spirullina in my Biology lab this week. Didn’t know it was edible; should I know that? Am i a bad student?
Where to begin?! I am so ready for spring too. I’m over over over winter. Done with it. We are breaking up. Summer is my new, forever love.
I’ve considered a Vitamix but I can’t seem to make myself do it. Mostly because I really really want a Kitchenaid stand mixer and if I can’t talk myself into THAT, then I can’t talk myself into a Vitamix. I have a magic bullet, which was gifted to me, and it does the trick. I’m definitely a smoothie girl but I don’t know if I can deal with pond scum in my drink. We shall see.
I get overwhelmed and give up on things as well. I’m trying to break the habit. This is my year!
We grilled for the first time yesterday evening and I’m pretty excited about all the yummy things I’ll be throwing on the barbie in the coming months. Especially corn!!
Those cupcakes look drool worthy.
I wonder if I could mix spirulina ,chocolate ice cream and banana’s???
FORGET IT………. after reading what that stuff is (gross )
I’ll just add green food coloring!
gack 1. i am still skeptical that spring is coming 2. i just cannot do spirulina. 3. umi is indeed delicious 4. i have been grocery shopping at lotus in the strip bc whole foods will never steal my money on produce again. jessica. it’s like 3x the markup?! i just cannot! plus…tofu is 40cents a block…yeah like an entire BLOCK that is house made and warm from the back kitchen. it’s insane!
It is almost Spring, I can feel it too. Your pictures are gorgeous!
I love these post! They’re currently my favorite thing happening on blogs right now. I would dare say you’re my favorite blog on the internet. Gosh, I love it.
I got a Vitamix about two years ago and it’s amazing. I think you’ll continue to love yours! Also–I went to Sephora today looking for a new lip color and I found the most amazing brand (and I used to do makeup at a spa, so I’ve tried a lot!) It’s a brand called Bite. It’s food grade and uses orange/citrus peel to hydrate. It’s both moisturizing and highly pigmented, with amazing colors, and it smells like fresh oranges (I love the fruity scented stuff). If you’re in the mood for a new lip color, go for Bite! I got the Clementine color and it’s awesome!
i love bite!! i recently got the matte crayon and am obsessed!
I have a Vitamix also!! Please give us some great smoothie recipes!
Have you tried any of the Amazing Grass powders to cram more green into your life? I must say… I had to chug the Lemon Lime Energy one to get through it but the Orange Creamsicle one is quite nice mixed with OJ or in a smoothie! :)
Also. I’m so jealous of your new toy.
i used to drink amazing grass years ago but i could rarely handle it – probably because of my crappy blenders! maybe i will try another.
More pictures of Steve please
I need some DELALLO
How did the goat cheese ice cream turn out?
Love the tulips as we fake spring in the northeast.
Love your site! Beautiful photos, terrific food – and the tulips today were such a warm spring welcome. Also, so many of the bloggers are from SF or NYC or other BIG CITY- but I’m a Pittsburgh girl and it’s great to show the world that the Burgh is really a cool, stylish place.
Have you read this buzzfeed yet?
It is so interesting!! (77 facts that sound like huge lies but are true)
Now I wonder if they really are true!
http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/77-facts-that-sound-like-huge-lies-but-are-completely-true
Yay!! Can we just cover How Sweet It Is with smoothie recipes for a while!?!? I can’t wait to see what you come up with!!
What is the orange stuff in the picture for your smoothie?
frozen mango! i get it at trader joes.
Looking forward to the video! If the vitamix blade stays good, let us know. I was considering getting a Ninja, now I guess that may not be a good idea! Thanks for the heads up!
Will we get to see your video?!? I hope so!
And congrats on the Vitamix! It’s a game-changer for sure. :)
I want one of those cupcakes. STAT.
Also, I love LOVE LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the shoes we can see in that picture of the pizza. Amaze.
Congratulation on your vitamix. I just got mine at Christmas time and I love it! (My husband bought me a really nice Pandora charm and I took it back and bought the blender….what woman picks a kitchen appliance over jewerly…a foodie that’s who! ).
What spirulina brand do you use?
Talonica bread from Delallo’s is will make you a bread person. I think I could eat an entire loaf.
I had to look up spirulina; I don’t think I’ve heard of it before?? Curious where you get yours… THANKS!
Now if you could only make an amazing lactose-free ice cream. I realize you can buy lactose free ice cream in the store, but their flavors are just regular flavors. The most they have are flavors like cookie dough. I do love cookie dough, but I’d much rather have blueberry cheesecake or something else along those please. Can you please make those dreams come true???
