July Favorites: Beauty.
HOW is it that time again already? Eeep.
Okay, so. This month I finally got to tell you that I was knocked up which means the last THREE beauty favorites which nearly impossible for me. I wanted to tell you about things I was using/not using, but I didn’t want to tip anyone off for normal reasons’ sake. Thankfully since the news is out, I can share.
I wasn’t BS-ing you in those beauty posts by any means, it was all stuff I was totally loving and using that month. It just wasn’t my main focus. Since it’s summer, I’ve been wearing a lot less makeup in general. Except for a few moments where I’ve gone a little eye crazy (like right now, I’m wearing purple and black eyeliner and probably look like a clown or a lady of the night), it’s been pretty simple.
I’ve kept away from the two biggest things I’ve read that can be harmful during pregnancy: retinols and salicylic acid. I hadn’t even used retinol creams before, but I had just happened to buy a Paula’s Choice one at the end of March (since I’m still in search for a great nighttime moisturizer) and only used it once or twice at night. It’s been shelved since I saw a plus sign. (or in my case, a 3+ weeks sign.) As for the salicylic acid products: I have a philosophy clear skin one I was using as a spot treatment and I believe there is a little of it in my glam glow super mud mask. I haven’t used either – but thankfully I really haven’t had to. I’ve been pretty lucky with my skin. I don’t get hormonal breakouts very often and things haven’t changed much since I got pregnant. Yes, I’ve had a few pimples here and there. I HAVE continued to use the Burt’s Bees blemish stick, which has a more natural form of salicylic acid in it. My doc said it was fine, especially because I was using such a small amount. I’ve probably only used it three or four times though in five+ months.
This also means I haven’t used any other face masks either! I love doing masks – Eddie and I even do them together (I KNOW) – and I miss it. But it’s really not a huge deal and do I need to slather a bunch of chemicals on my face right now? Eh. There is no need at the moment. I can always make a homemade one if I really want it. I have a few moisturizing ones that are probably fine too.
I did cut out a lot of items I use regularly that have parabens – I had started doing this at the beginning of the year anyway. I realize I’m a total hypocrite with it comes to parabens. I’ve researched both sides, I’m not even positive on my stance yet. But I figure if I can use some products with more natural ingredients for everyday – why not? This means I’ve stopped using the body shop body butters AND my keihls creme de corps – both of which I’ve really loved. WAH. I’m sure that some of the eye shadows, lip products and blushes I use have parabens, but I don’t use them all every single day. Me = hypocrite.
I think I’ve talked about this alba daily shade for two months now, but GAH – I love it. I mentioned in my pregnancy favorites that I’ve become even more of a lunatic about SPF than I was before. I’m really trying to avoid sunspots (if that’s even possible). I already have very fair, freckle-y skin, so I’m sure I’m prone. I’m still using this as my daily morning/day lotion. At night, I’ll use a pacifica body butter or desert essence body butter – but I’ve mentioned those a bunch in the past.
If I want a higher SPF, if I’m going to be at a pool or outside working out or spending copious amounts of time in the sun, I’ll wear my coola or sun bum sunscreen. Love.
Also, I finished that tube of hope in a jar SPF moisturizer for daytime. I liked it well enough and will probably buy it again. I’m still in desperate search for a night time cream I love. I should just suck it up and try the real hope in a jar, right?
I’ve been using this toner for a year or two after finding it through Birchbox – this is probably my fourth or fifth bottle and I got my BFF hooked too – but it wasn’t until pregnancy that I really learned to love it. I liked it a lot before – I use it with an exfoliating cotton pad and it removes all dirt from my face. But THIS is truly the only thing I’ve been putting on my face besides cleanser and moisturizer at night. I tried another one of their versions a while back (the lemon?) and didn’t love it – but have repurchased this many times. It does seem to even my skin tone a bit and like I said, remove any dirt that my hands or clarisonic misses.
Back on the topic of sunscreen, I am still LOVING this supergoop eye cream during the day! It doesn’t sting my eyes whatsoever if it migrates and I love the higher SPF. I know I mentioned this last month but I really really adore it.
Return of my love! Not really a return for me… but to my favorites. This has been the biggest change because while I love the tarte moisturizer, in the summer I adore using the dr. jart BB cream and had also really started loving that it cosmetics CC cream. Both offer a tiny bit more coverage that this one, but both also have parabens. I liked switching all three up. So now, I’ve just been using the tarte on a daily basis.
For a little more coverage, I’ve continued to use the bare minerals bare skin foundation. I don’t use it everyday – just if I am really dressing up or going out or doing photos or something. I also have the tarte 12 hour amazonian clay foundation, and I like that too – but I think I like the bare skin better. It’s much more natural.
And of course, I’m still using my too faced milk chocolate soleil bronzer LIKE CRAZY.
Another repeat: this sugar advanced therapy lip balm. I’ve said it before but I consider myself to be a lip balm connoisseur. (Yes, it’s sad.) I can’t find ANYTHING else I love like I love this. Yes, it is ridiculously priced. But I just can’t find anything close. Not even the dior creme de rose which I’ve loved forever. I use this every night. I try to buy it on sale or with a coupon. I don’t put it in my purse for fear of losing it. It’s really the only thing that has been soothing my dry lips.
I have a sample of the SPF version and it’s great too – but I can’t bring myself to spend that on a balm I’d blow through continuously, so I still love Burts Bees for daytime. This stuff… ugh. Just so good. I’m anxious to know if you’ve tried it. I first did after mentioning it on my wish list last fall and you guys were split down the middle: some loved, some hated. I’m clearly in the love camp. Oye.
This tarte lipstick in whimsy has been my go-to color this month. I’ve either worn clear gloss… or this. So adventurous! I’ve had this since last summer but I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it here. I’ve talked about it on instagram because anytime I’m wearing it, I always get asked what it is. It’s very blue based, which I love. It’s bright but not ridiculous like candy yum-yum. These lipsticks are soft and kind of velvety, but also kinda feel like lipstick, so beware. They are not drying though. Well, this is the only shade I have, but it’s not drying. I feel like it works with everything.
Something new! I finally cracked and bought one of these josie maran coconut water eyeshadows.
OMG. It is incredible. I don’t know if I’d do the other shades, but this is perfect. It’s in playa del pink. I feel like it’s a cream version of urban decay sin, which I talk about all the time – it’s been my go-to neutral shimmer eye shade for years. I’ve been using this on my eyes with just mascara, some tinted moisturizer, a little blush and lipgloss – and that’s it.
See how shimmery? It’s nuts. And it lasts all day. I put it over the nars shadow primer and it doesn’t crease… like ever. I’ve also used it over a mac paint pot and it doesn’t crease.
This shampoo has been one of my biggest changes since getting knocked up! After deciding I should try a more natural shampoo without a bunch of crap, I threw a tantrum and then bought this after reading reviews. Shampoos like this rarely do anything for my hair, but I’ve loved this one. I do have the conditioner version but am not a fan. But remember in April when I talked about the alba hair mask?? That’s because I was pregnant… and it is awesome! I’m currently out of it but love this shampoo with that conditioner.
I haven’t colored my hair or anything since getting pregnant, so no worries about color fading or anything.
I did, however, cut my hair as you may know, which has been awesome but actually kind of requires me to DO my hair and somewhat style it. Many days I’ll use the beach waves spray I talked about last month. But other days when I’ve been keeping it straight or using a curling wand, it definitely needs a boost at the roots. If I’m on second day hair I’ll use some dry shampoo (batiste is still my fave). I’ll also use some of this loreal boost spray at the roots and rub it in well. It gives a little lift – especially if I tease it a bit! I found it at Target.
Of course.
Totally random, but um, I love this stuff? My cousin told me about it a few months ago. I can find it at whole foods, it’s ridiculously cheap (like $2) and it smells so good. I’ve never been nutty over the weird smelling alcohol travel hand gels. I’m usually just good with washing my hands. Plus my mom has a horror story where she used an anti-bac gel then put in her contacts and it’s scarred me for life. But this stuff is awesome. Works after being at the grocery store or something like that. LOVE the scent. And that it’s a spray! Fits perfectly in my purse.
One thing that was really weird during the omg-I’m-nauseated-24/7-months in pregnancy was perfume. I couldn’t burn candles or spray perfume, it all made me sick. I could wear rollerballs though (and the beach perfume from last month was okay, probably because it smells like CHILDHOOD) because they weren’t as offensive and didn’t seem like I was swimming in fragrance. I am still crazy over the nirvana white! Which is so weird, because I just assumed the black would be my favorite. I bought the black first and while I do love it, I think I like the white more? It’s consistently been what I’ve wanted to wear. I love it for summer.
That’s it! I realize I don’t have a ton of favorites this month, but I really wanted to focus on the things that I’ve changed, things I’ve have been constantly using since April and what I feel more comfortable with now that I’ve got a bun in the oven. This month has also been nuts with work and moving, so makeup has been on the backburner. I’m sure next month I’ll be back to my old ways… I can already feel it.
Now share share share your favorites!
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are a few amazon affiliate links above. thank you for being here!}

Oh wow, coconut water eye shadow? That stuff looks amazing! Question: I know you’re probably not using them right now, but do you have any recommendations for sunless tanner that 1) goes on fairly evenly and 2) doesn’t stink? I’ve found a few that give me some decent colour but the smell always puts me off! Thanks Jess!
my absolute FAVE is st. tropez!! i am super fair and tried self tanners for years – they all made me look orange. i kept putting off the st tropez because it’s pricey but it is the only thing that doesn’t streak on me and looks natural. it is safe during pregnancy, but i haven’t used it as much as i normally did because i just figure… why not put it on if i don’t need it? i have used it twice or three times since getting pregnant, just near an event. i can’t imagine using anything else!
Coconut water eyeshadow?? Clearly I need that.
Great favorites! It’s too faced chocolate soleil! Damn pregnancy brain, lol. I love seeing all your favorites while pregnant!
The Milk Chocolate Soleil is just a bit lighter than the Chocolate Soleil. It’s super duper pretty. And judging from your profile pic, it would look amazing on you.
Love these posts. I am eagerly awaiting your cookbook!
I use the Alba Botanic moisturizer and shampoo too! Love!
That hand sanitizer sounds amazing! I don’t normally use hand sanitizers, as like you said, I’m good with washing my hands but sometimes you need a refresher throughout the day. A few months ago I decided to start trying hair and beauty products with less ‘crap’. I tried the shea moisture line and I’m in love with the body lotion. The olive & green tea one smells amazing and its really thick, which I need because my skin is super dry. It’s kinda hard to get out of the bottle but thats my only complaint.
The Alba Hawaiian face wash is my new favorite thing. I have really dry skin, and this is the first cleanser I’ve found that doesn’t leave my skin tight and dry feeling. Now I want to try the shampoo as well!!
oh i have to try the face wash!!
these posts are awesome. Do you have a good online resource to look up what are good/bad products?
for the majority of products, i just do some research on the ingredients myself and go from there – kind of like food, i tend to think the less the better!
for reviews, i have used makeup alley for years. i read reviews on everything before buying – sometimes they sway me, sometimes they don’t. if i really want to try something, i may still try it even if the reviews stink.
i have used beautypedia before to get their ratings on products… i’m torn. some stuff i love that is fairly natural has a horrible rating on there. they also are fine with parabens being in products, but don’t like essential oils or fragrances. so i just kinda take it with a grain of salt. go with my gut!
If you miss face masks, try one from LUSH! They are made from natural ingredients. I love them!
omg i love those masks. i want to eat the cupcake one.
Not sure about the paraben content, but I’m in LOVE with clinique’s repairwear night cream. Everything makes my skin oily/breakout, and this stuff keeps my skin soft and glowing (seriously, I get compliments, which makes this former acne-sufferer so happy). It has a sort of buttery texture, and though pricy a little goes a long way. It absorbs really well.
If you’re looking for a great lip balm, Molton Brown’s lip balm is magical stuff. I don’t know what’s in it, but considering what they charge for it, I’m guessing unicorn tears. Fortunately my dad stays at a hotel that gives out samples of it pretty regularly, so I’ve only paid for it once or twice. Great to moisturize on its own, or as a pre-lipstick base.
I seriously love those Josie eye shadows… At first, I wasn’t sure about the application, would it be too watery, but no worries here. It’s sooo good. And such good shine/pigment. Loving the payoff. (PS… I may have bought like all of the colors at Sephora… I just loved them so much, I couldn’t help myself.)
I broke down and bought the Laura Mercier Peach Mosaic highlighter… it’s similar to the Bobbi Brown shimmer bricks, and I’m in love. Oh, and Becca… their highlighters are the best. My sephora finally got them back in stock, so I bought Moontsone & Opal, and I’m so glad I did, despite the fact that I probably don’t need a new highlighter till like 2025.
Oh, also finally tried Anastasia’s eye brow pot, and I’m loving the medium brown shade. It goes on so easy and has totally exceeded my expectations. After all, can’t leave the house without my eyebrows on!
I’ve been trying to naturalize my products too, and joined Petit Vour in June – it’s like Birchbox, but everything is natural, vegan, etc. So far I’m loving it! You should check it out.
I’ve been on the hunt for a good toner, and now I know which one i have to try! Just curious: what was it about the lemon one you didn’t like? I have sensitive skin that is occasionally prone to breakouts…but otherwise is pretty normal/somewhat dry. Toners are one of the trickiest things for me to find because I don’t want to zap all moisture from my skin but I also don’t want something that will make me break out. If you finally discover a good overnight cream, please share! That is also on my list.
Hope in a Jar is my favorite moisturizer yet! So soft and smells like lavender! You would probably love it!
I’ve been doing a complete skincare overhaul myself, trying to find natural products. I have mostly oily skin and even though I know keeping moisturized is actually the best way to control oil I HATE putting stuff on my face. So my two favorite moisturizers right now are Alba Botanica Hawaiian oil-free moisturizer. It’s thick and smooth but not greasy at all and works well under makeup even in the summer time. I’m also a big fan of Origins A perfect world night cream. Also non-greasy. Origins is great for all-natural products. For cleansers either Earth Science (whole foods but CHEAP) or Jason Gluten Free (i’m not allergic to gluten but it’s super gentle on the skin). Both leave my face clean without feeling tight or dry after. Also I got hooked on Caudalie Beauty Elixir – it’s a bit pricey but insanely refreshing and personally it seems to be reducing my pores and trapping in moisture (it saved me from feeling gross on a 15 hour flight too). I’m still on the hunt for the perfect shampoo and conditioner though. My hair is very picky and I can tell a huge difference when I switch it up. I’m using 2Chic right now which I’m loving and is at whole foods but I’m not sure just how “natural” it really is. And for makeup: bare minerals hands down. It was recommended to me by an esthetician in college and whenever I try something new I always come back to it.
i love the beauty elixir too! it’s just like a luxurious way to treat yourself.
I can’t remember if I’ve ever left you a comment about this, but Andalou Naturals has an amazing night cream that I love. I use their brightening line of cleansers, eye cream, toner, BB cream (which I love so much more than Tarte, it’s cheaper than Tarte, and has one of the best rankings from the Environmental Working Group), masks (they have an amazing pumpkin one), and daytime moisturizer. But at night I use their Reservaltrol Q10 Night Repair Cream from their anti-aging line. Their blemish vanishing gel is also the best I’ve ever used, but it does have salicylic acid in it. All their stuff is vegan, mostly organic, and non GMO. You can find it at Whole Foods, every few weeks it’s usually 25% off. I am obsessed with their stuff, since I started using it a few years ago it’s transformed my skin.
Also, totally unrelated, I finished The One and Only this morning, which after seeing your review on Goodreads I was even more excited/intrigued/scared to read and OMG. I think I liked it, and found it oddly plausible, but I keep picturing me with my best friend’s dad or my best friend with my dad and I keep dying a little inside!
you totally sold me on this. i was standing in whole foods when i read the comment! i ended up getting the night cream. i can’t wait to try it tonight! i looked at the BB cream but it looked a little on the orangey/too dark side for my skin (without any tanning) – what is your skin tone like??
and yes yes YES to the one and only! honestly the further i’ve gotten away from the book the more i have liked it. BUT i just can’t get over how they keep mentioning he
practically raised her” – way too weird!
It was serendipity that you were in Whole Foods :) I’m so glad you got it, I hope you love it!
I am super pale (even in summer because I’m paranoid about winkles) with pinky undertones and I’ve never had a problem with the Andalou BB cream, it seems to do a good job of just matching skin tone.
The raising her part was definitely so weird. I couldn’t believe her dad was so chill about it. 20 years is a lot (like me dating a 50yo, blech), but not unimaginable. But a surrogate father is just weird.
The Andalou Kukui Nut Body Butter is fabulous! Kind of like the Body Shop body butters but more natural.
Love these posts so much! Well, all your posts, really. I am so excited for your book! But these posts have definitely inspired me to try new products outside my usual “safe” realm. Thank you!
I adore everything Tarte – especially that BB cream or the 12 hour foundation for more coverage (blend the two together, use a beauty-blender, ahhhmazing!). I don’t know what the ingredients are, but I love any of the Origins face masks, particularly the charcoal one. Also, FAB (first aid beauty) available at Sephora has an amazing face cleanser (the original, not the red clay one), radiance pads, and daily face lotion. And, from my obsessive wandering of the health food store, I love Andalou Naturals and the Organix coconut line for hair products.
Loved these beauty faves! I’m becoming quite the beauty addict these days as well. You should totally start a beauty vlog. Just sayin’. ;D
As an avid lover of Tarte’s BB Tinted Moisturizer, I would say try the Tarte BB Tinted Primer if you want a bit more coverage. It has less in the way of color options, but if you can find the right shade it’s a great product. It has that silky silicone feel that you find in a lot of primers, but it also does a great job of smoothing my face. It will also give you that great glow (even with setting powder) that the tinted moisturizer always manages to do.
I second the love for Andalou Naturals..especially the cleansing milk. My new favorite night lotion is by Everyday Coconut which I find at Vitacost.
Just a tip, the easiest way to check your products is here.
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
They have an app too (called Skin Deep) with a barcode so you can scan at the store. I believe the rule of thumb is a 3 or lower is good!
I swear by Mario Badescu Protein Night Cream! It’s inexpensive, the formula is so rich, and I feel like my skin happily drinks it up at night. When I wake up, my skin feels insanely soft – and my boyfriend always comments on how soft my face is when I use it so I’m pretty sure it’s not all in my head.
Ok, for lip balm, have you tried Nuxe Reve de Miel? I looovveeeeee iitttt. I’ve never tried the Sugar one so I can’t quite compare but Nuxe is so rich but not sticky or tacky. It somehow absorbs instantly and I’ve literally never once had dry lips since using. I’m obsessed.
i haven’t! buuuut now i need to.
Love these posts! Since you mentioned the Everyone hand sanitizer, you HAVE to try their body wash/shampoo/bubble bath combo. I just use it as hand soap, but the coconut scent is incredible and my hands are soft all day. You’ll love it. :)
I really want to get that same shade of the Josie Maran coconut water eyeshadow, but when I went to Sephora, the mixture in the display case sample seemed to have separated and the water and color weren’t mixing well. Have you had any similar experiences with that? I did buy a tarte amazonian clay blush in tipsy yesterday and am so excited to use it! I’m also looking forward to using my new supergoop sunscreen oil at the beach next week! I haven’t tried it but I love the idea of putting on a sunscreen oil rather than sticky lotion!
yes! when it sits it separates – i’m sure it’s like the coconut water and an oil or something – but all you do is shake it and it becomes one again. directions just say shake before each use!
That coconut water eyeshadow looks KILLER. Whoaaaaa.
Every month I’m more and more pleased with Ipsy. I get tons of full size products, even a full-size urban decay moondust shadow. ten dollars a month for 4-5 full or deluxe sample size products AND an adorable cosmetic bag?! Can’t be beat. I highly suggest signing up. http://www.ipsy.com/r/11ar
Funny how you mentioned Birchbox!! I just started getting BB a few months ago and I adore it so far. I’ve gotten some pretty great high quality products from them. https://www.birchbox.com/invite/qvttp Yet another ten dollar a month thing! Such a nice little treat every month.
I saw someone left a comment about Lush’s face masks but I’m a huge fan of their shampoo bars also. They are almost completely all-natural and if you go back to coloring your hair, it helps keep the color longer. I pair this with Whole Foods 365 Conditioner in Grape Fruit. It will last months and smells so good.
wow i gotta tell you i am soooo glad i do not want kids. what you have given up in the food and beauty area is cray cray. i had no idea you had to give up all this stuff. shows how much i know !
ugh, hate fresh sugar lip balm; tried 3 tubes & they all broke off. found an awesome all natural lip butter from soap & paper factory in limoncello http://bit.ly/1qM4Ukp. so nourishing! and it comes in a cute compact with a mirror ❤️❤️ only $9 & only takes a little. better than that rose salve
I love the Alba face moisturizer – Jasmine & Vitamin E. It’s so light, non-greasy, and has a lovely non-overbearing fragrance. It’s perfect. I really love it a ton. This month I’ve been very into Bare Minerals Mineral Veil powder because I adore that it has SPF, the Naked 3 palette, Tarte Captivating blush, and YSL Sheer Volupte glossy balms. They are pricey but so worth it. I went from owning zero to four in like a week. Also, Becca highlighter in Rose Gold. Holy crap is it beautiful!
A late congrats! I have to agree, I thought I would love the black nirvana by itself but when you Larrite with the way it’s a whole different experience! Enjoy! I have to get around to trying the BB cream from tarte!
I always see Alba hair products at Target but haven’t given it a try. I currently use Carol’s Daughter Monoi shampoo & conditioner and love it! I’ll be sure to give Alba try in the future!
Have you tried the Bite Agave Lip Mask? It’s sticky, but I use it before bed, maybe a tiny bit in the morning & that’s it, it’s completely transformed my lips (as someone who had 10+ lip balls on her at all times & applied it multiple times a day, this was a huge switch for me. Totally worth the crazy price tag)
I’ll have to try that shampoo, I’ve struck out with all the natural ones I’ve tried so far
You always mention skin care and avoiding sun spots, etc. have you ever thought to try Rodan and Fields products? (The makers of ProActiv – they’ve created a new brand with many more skin care options). The “reverse” line would be perfect if you do see any sun spots but it also helps to heal
The sun damage already there that isn’t noticeable to the eye. If that doesn’t interest you – they also have preventative products.

I like Burt’s Bees hand sanitizer. It’s a spray too and also smells good. It’s about $5 though.
So, as a newbie to the first time preggo camp (about 3 months behind you), I’ve been anxiously reading along with your related posts (+ of course, all the food ones, as I have been for years!), looking for good tips! I was wondering if you’d done much research on the sodium lauryl sulfoacetate that’s in the Alba shampoo?
I’ve been using what I thought was a safe shampoo, DHS Clear Shampoo from Person + Covey, but just realized it has TEA-lauryl sulfate in it. I know that SODIUM lauryl sulfate is not recommended during pregnancy, since it has been linked to birth defects in animal studies, but I can’t seem to find much info. on whether the TEA-lauryl sulfate + soduim lauryl sulfoacetate are different, + safe to use during pregnancy. Any ideas?
I love these posts! I have had basically the same makeup/beauty routine, other than occasionally experimenting here and there, since I first started wearing makeup/taking care of my skin in middle school. But after reading a few of these posts, and due to the fact I am getting older (read: concerned about different health and beauty things than I was back then) I have been inspired to try new things and now I am sightly addicted! Can’t wait to see next month’s post!

I just bought 3 of the Coconut Water eyeshadows. I’m wearing the purple one today. I love it. It goes on so easy. And it really looks good. I have the pink one that you mentioned, too. Can’t wait to try it.
So my absolute favorite cream when I was pregnant was Mama Mio’s Tummy Rub butter. Stuff is stupid expensive, and I went through a jar a month, but oh, it was heavenly. Smelled good, felt good, and nary a stretch mark to be found. http://www.mioskincare.com/the-tummy-rub-butter.html
I just wanted to say how much i appreciate that that these products are purchased by you and that your opinions are honest and your own. I love these posts!!
i downloaded the “GoodGuide” app on my phone…it gives you ratings on health, environmental, and social impact…you can use it in store by scanning barcode of products…i’ve found it helpful in trying to be a little more natural with products
I find it hard to get good products while you are pregnant. You are super lucky not to being breaking out. My skin went nuts.

You might like the COOLA tinted moisturizer and their lip balm! I’ve loooved both!
Love that lip color, but can’t find it in Whimsy! Any suggestions of alternatives??
