Meyer Lemon Shandy Sangria.
I’m passing you the pitcher!
Back in the day, like waaaay long ago – years – we would meet family friends at Pizza Hut one night during the week (proudly wearing our Book It pins, obviously) after I had a gymnastics session . Three things I remember from those dinners: personal pan pizzas (mine was always PLAIN because I had the palette of a seven year old since I was one), jars of crushed red pepper flakes (this was really my first encounter with them, and once I dumped them ALL over a slice of pizza and took a few bites – that went over well, I didn’t hate life at all) and pitchers of beer.
The pitchers of beer weren’t for our table (though with seven kids combined I have no idea why not) but as we’d walk to our seats, the pitchers were everywhere! A beer pitcher at every table, practically. I thought they were lemonade.
Hard day’s work + reward? Probably.
My next encounter with pitchers of beer wouldn’t be until college, and that went over exactly as you’d expect. Exactly.
Therefore I haven’t wanted a pitcher of beer in approximately ten years.
Until now!
Until I added fruit and lemon soda and juice and brandy and trashed it up until my heart was content.
Shandy sangria. Let’s make it a thing.
Since we’re already using lemonade soda, it’s probably not a must to use citrusy beer but I think it makes the drink so much better. I still had a few bottles of this grapefruit shady in my fridge (don’t ask me HOW) and while we’re all about the meyer lemons here at the moment, the grapefruit added the most fabulous extra kick. Super bright and fresh.
Plus, if you haven’t tried the grapefruit shandy, you haven’t lived. It’s is so fabulous. And, I mean, it’s grapefruit. So it’s healthy.
Also, you don’t NEED to use meyer lemons. We just so happen to be a few days away from the Super Bowl and meyer lemons are in season, but if you come across this sangria in, say, June and want to make a batch to take to the beach, use up some regular old lemons. I’d just taste and adjust the sweetness if needed since the meyers are slightly sweeter.
So, cheers? (Now please slide the pitcher back to me. k thanks.)
Meyer Lemon Shandy Sangria
Ingredients
- 3 (12-ounce) cold bottles citrus-y wheat beer (I adore leinenkugel sunset wheat or grapefruit shady)
- 1 1/2 cups cold lemon soda, like sanpellegrino limonata
- 1 cup cold ginger beer, or ale, it will be less spicy
- 1/2 cup Grand Marnier
- 1/4 cup meyer lemon juice
- 2 meyer lemons, sliced
- 2 limes, sliced
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 grapefruit, segmented
- 1 apple, sliced
- 1/2 cup blueberries
Instructions
- All all of the fruit in the bottom of a large pitcher. Combine the ingredients together and stir gently. Pour the drink over extra fruit and ice. Unlike regular sangria, I don’t let this sit overnight since we’re using the beer and it’s carbonated and fizzy. Also, as note, taste your sangria before serving. The sweetness level will depend on the beer you use along with the sweetness of your lemons!

You know, our garbage men are really picky and take NOTHING! Which means, if you have toilet or something big that needs to go, you’re outta luck. So my trick……………when I see them cruising down the street is to run out with a refreshing lemony drink! It puts them in a good mood and then they take my garbage. Or I have to pay a ridiculous free. This is gonna be the drink I make for them next time they come rolling, minus the booze though cause I don’t want them fired!
Ummm hi. This is the drink of my dreams. Can you please make me an unlimited supply to deal with the very big birthday I have looming in 2 weeks. K thanks.
ooooh you have a big reason to make a pitcher then. :)
Seems perfect for me! x

I’ll take that pitcher and raise a glass! I still love plain pizza (with hot sauce, a-duhhhhh). Lemony beer, so glad it’s almost Friday.
Ps will you be totally mad if I pass the pitcher back and it’s empty?
i am such a baby and can’t get on the hot sauce + pizza train!
Leinenkugel! I grew up smelling it because it’s my grandpa’s favorite (so Midwestern). This looks incredible! I’ll definitely put this on the list once the weather warms up a touch!
Your Own Queen
it is absolutely my favorite, but i certainly don’t have a wide variety of beer for this palate!
Awwww..Leinenkugel is my husband ‘s great great grandfather (Jacob Leinenkugel founder of the Brewer)
This sounds amazing and so springy! Have you ever tried Schofferhofer Grapefruit beer? It’s amazing and TOO easy to drink! http://www.schofferhofer.us/age-check?rdr=%2F
Just here to second what Steph said!
ahhh i have not! i’m definitely going to be looking for it. thanks!!
I had a shandy for the first(!) time this past summer and it was the first time I actually enjoyed a beer, so I definitely relate to your sentiments! This looks incredible – thanks for sharing a way to make beer truly appealing to even people who aren’t beer people
yes, that’s how i really started to enjoy beer – shandy is where it’s at.
This looks SO good. Just in time for the weekend. :)
This looks beautiful – your photos are stunning! I can’t wait to try this as I do love a good shandy!
thanks ahu!!
I literally add citrus (lime or lemon) to every beer that I ever have…even if its not appropriate or called for. THIS is happening. Even if I have to drink it all myself.
me too!
All of that fruit looks incredible! Such a pretty drink!

OK. This is definitely happening this weekend. You have been ON POINT with your meyer lemon usage, girl!
This looks delicious! I’m bookmarking if for a time when I’m not knocked up :)
Ok. I’d never heard of shandy until right now. I obviously live under a rock.
melissa! you must try!
This has me dreaming of summer! I’ll take this on my front porch in 80 degree weather please!
OK, can I just go back to the BookIt pins?!?! We are birds of the same sparkly, Lisa Frank feather, my friend!
seriously!
Holy hell. This looks PERFECT. Haven’t made it but already know it’s love.
I am OBSESSED with shandys! It all started with Schofferhoffer Grapefruit that my hubby and I tried at Epcot, and we were hooked – when our favorite grocery store had Leinenkugel BOGO over the summer, we no joke bought 8 cases that lasted us approximately 3 hours (felt like it anyway.) I love this idea of turning it into sangria…it’s so delish by itself, but adding more fruit sounds so perfect! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
This is absolutely brilliant! First, I didn’t know there was a grapefruit shandy (how did I miss that? oh right, because there’s about 100 billion different craft beers in the beer section now, I can barely find the stuff that I KNOW exists without help :) Excuse me, sir? Exactly where can I find the Allagash White?) This might become my very favorite sangria. It looks amazing!

Hi jessica this drink looks so colorful and tasty, I don’t drink but i may try the recipe, oh and I have a Meyers lemon tree full of new lemons, but not yet ready, wish I had this recipe before I used the ripe lemons on other of your food recipes.
Jacob Leinenkugel (founder of brewery) great great grandfather in law ;)
Sorry to pop in uninvited and all that, but it is very strange for me to see this drink with the word “sangria” attached to it when there is no wine in it at all. It is the same as when I see a no-rice/boiled-rice/with-chorizo “paella”. It is all kinds of weird and uncomfortable to see your cultural background turned into a mirage of itself. Then, when we get visitors who are presented with the real food or drinks, it is not what they are used to. Wouldn’t it be better to find other descriptive names for dishes or drinks when they only share the smallest of inspiration with existing recipes?
