Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowls.
Or, how to eat chocolate peanut butter all day, everyday.
This is my new favorite thing out of all the favorite things.
It’s been a minute since I cared a ton about smoothies. I went through a phase the last two years where I just didn’t want them. The truth is that sometimes I prefer to chew my food. In fact, I always prefer to chew rather than drink my calories.
We’ve shaken thinks up though because Max absolutely LOVES smoothies. If he sees Eddie or me drinking one, he cannot stand it and jumps up and down and points and yells until he gets a sip. I am having so much fun making him different flavor combos and tastes and since it’s difficult to make such a small portion for him in the Vitamix, I just make a big one and we share. Go-to’s are strawberry coconut, blueberry spinach and pineapple.
I’m totally a mom now because sharing a smoothie with my child makes me stupidly happy. I think it’s wonderfully sweet. It might even make my cry. This is horrible.
Breaking news! This is one of the only times I like cacao nibs.
A few weeks ago in my Tuesday Things I asked if anyone REALLY liked these things. Do they? I mean, I’ve been trying to love on them for years and I’m just like… no. You’re supposed to taste like chocolate and you taste like rocks.
But wait. On top of this smoothie in a bowl? Crunchy and *sort of* (< being the operative word) chocolate-like, I really enjoyed them. I think it’s because there was definitely already enough sweetness, enough chocolate and enough peanut butter. So I was cool with it.
Look at these peanut butter dreams. Ooomph. So delicious. This is Justin’s honey peanut butter and I melted it until super creamy and drippy. The minute it hits the chocolate smoothie, it firms up a bit and reminds me of the inside of a peanut butter cup or even how hot fudge firms up once hitting cold ice cream. The texture is perrrrfect.
Here’s my thing with smoothie bowls. If I’m going to eat it out of a BOWL, I need it to be super thick. Almost like soft serve. Like banana soft serve. This is why I always use bananas – I love them so I don’t mind, but I know a bunch of you aren’t fans. I can sit here and say that oh I can’t really taste the bananas! and I honestly don’t feel like I can – BUT. If you really hate bananas, you can probably taste them. You can thicken this smoothie up more by using extra hemp seeds or freezing your yogurt. Maybe adding in a frozen avocado if you like that.
And you can make this a triple chocolate smoothie by adding some chocolate protein powder! I waaaay overdid the protein powder in my twenties so I’m going to sit that one out. It still makes me shiver with disgust. But I bet it’s just as good, possibly more chocolatey. Someone needs to trick me into drinking a good protein shake and maybe I’ll love it by accident.
After all, that’s how I get Eddie to eat 78% of the food I make.
Weirdly, I also prefer a smaller portion of a smoothie if it’s in a bowl. If I’m eating it by spoon, it needs to stay thick and creamy and therefore be portioned slightly smaller than if it were in a glass. Plus, it’s all about the toppings for me. Like froyo. Or, err, a salad. I’d rather pile a bunch of junk on top and eat that with bites of the smoothie from underneath!
So because of that, this smoothie could serve two OR four. I like to go with four. Then it’s more manageable as a snack and I can add tons of stuff on top. If it’s in a glass, without all the toppings, I’ll go with two.
Really though, when it comes to chocolate peanut butter, I just want to go with one. At least this is better than dipping my chocolate chip covered spoon into the peanut butter jar. But who does that?

Ok, making a smoothie with my child doesn’t make me cry, but I’m a man and a gym teacher so maybe that’s why. But these super filling looking smoothie bowls almost make me cry because they look a whole lot like dinner and heck, even healthy still. And all men love PB & chocolate (and hate coconut…right). Dang, you’ve even convinced me to try the chia seeds!
Okay, that looks incredible. I don’t have kids yet but I do have a boyfriend who is crazy about peanutbutter, does that count?
absolutely!
I actually just got on the smoothie bowl train myself about a month ago. I was all like “I don’t get what the big deal is”. But now I’m hooked because ALL THE TOPPINGS! And I totally prefer that calories enter my body with a spoon instead of a straw. This bowl looks like perfection – chocolate and PB for life!
it’s like froyo but kinda healthier… ? hehe.
Girl, this is just a thing of beauty. Also – chocolate and peanut butter for breakfast … YYYEEESS!!
Anything double chocolate will do for me. JK, I need this in my life RIGHT now!
OMG I need this now..I’ve been super into smoothie bowls lately as the weather’s getting better. And choc + pb is my favorite combo in the entire world. I agree with you on the cacao nibs..I only really eat them on smoothie bowls for the crunch, and sometimes they start to taste like chocolate when mixed with other things (I usually but them on my blueberry cacao smoothie bowl)!
blueberry cacao sounds like an amazing combo.
This is really similar to a smoothie that I make on a regular basis. I use chocolate dairy milk, regular vanilla yogurt, and throw in a handful of spinach to make me feel better!
yes to the spinach!
OMG. Reese’s are my jam so I am ALL over this. And this is so much more healthy than candy!
Does this have a strong banana texture?
Because I also have a texture thing about bananas and other ‘slimy’ things. It’s not so much the taste for me.
hmmm… i don’t think it does, because they are frozen first. but i can’t say for sure! i really like bananas so feel biased!
This is the closest I’ve come to being tempted by a smoothie bowl. I love drinking smoothies but somehow the whole concept of slurping a smoothie from a spoon and calling it a meal just seems kind of depressing to me, BUT with all these toppings, maybe I could trick myself if I layer it up as a parfait.
i’ve been the same way in the past. the trick is to make them SUPER thick. they need to be eaten with a spoon! and smaller portion so they don’t melt. i also have no interested in slurping cold smoothie from a spoon. just no.
Nothing beats breakfast that tastes like dessert! #chocolateandpb4lyfe
Can we just talk about how bonkers amazing your photos have been lately? I’m literally drooling over everything! This might sound creep but I wish I could stalk you just to watch you do a photoshoot… LOL ;)
wow, thank you so much! this means so much to me because i am constantly struggling with it!
Justin’s peanut butter is so delicious. What a fun take on smoothie!

Nice recipe for kids. Kids always like peanut butter. By the way whats the taste of chia seeds be like?
i personally don’t really think chia tastes like anything – it’s the texture that freaks people out! it’s similar to tapioca?
The design on your bowls is like a work of art. So Pretty!
thanks emily!
I feel the same way about smoothies. I enjoy them but would almost always prefer chewable calories. Almost.
This dessert smoothie on the other hand…where’s mah spoon at?!?
Also, no to protein powder. I ugh… no. I just don’t “get” it, I guess.
i just waaaay overdid and the thought (and thought of texture) makes me cringe.
Chocolate + peanut butter forever. And thank you for addressing the cacao nibs. I just bought them for the first time, ripped open the bag and threw some right into my mouth. OMG. So. Disgusting. I’ll definitely try them in this smoothie bowl. I was thisclose to throwing them in the trash.
same thing for me the first time. the worst!
Oh my gosh…..i saw this on insta and had to come check out the recipe! This looks unbelievably delicious!!!! hoping to make it this weekend!

thank you!
Chocolate and peanut butter are a match made in HEAVEN!!! Love this recipe and love your blog!
I definitely prefer my smoothies in a bowl! Suuuuper thick and satisfying. Otherwise, I think they just leave me hungrier? Is that possible? And the fact that you made this chocolate and peanut butter… DYING because that is the best combination ever. ?
The only thing I can’t deal with in smoothies is the green stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like vegetables, for the most part. I just can’t drink them. I don’t care how much fruit you put in!
i can do spinach but that’s it. and the blender has to be super powered so there are NO veg chunks!
Oh dear god, these are beautiful. As if I needed another excuse to stuff my face with chocolate and peanut butter every. single. day. I totally feel you on the smoothie bowl thing though- I want to drink my smoothie or eat ice cream covered in toppings, so a super thick smoothie bowl with a liiiiitle bit of smoothie and a ton of toppings is exactly what I need.
hey girl this looks really good! I need to get a blender! Yes that’s right I don’t have one! but I love smoothies and my husband would love this one!
Gorgeous! I love smoothies in a bowl and totally agree about it needing to be super-thick. The only fruit I’ve found is a decent sub for frozen banana is frozen mango.
me…. i do that…. #noshame

Where can I buy hemp seeds and cacao nibs? I’ve actually been looking for cacao nibs for quite some time and can’t seem to find them.
i find them in my local grocery store, but if they aren’t in yours, a trader joes or whole foods or any health food store should have them! honestly the cheapest place to get them is probably on amazon!

Have you tried Livwell’s protein? I use it in my chocolate smoothie bowls. It doesn’t have that chalky taste that most protein powders have and it’s pretty tasty with the frozen bananas. I also like to top the bowl with powdered peanut butter.
Hi! I wanna ask. Could Plain Greek yogurt to be changed with another yogurt ? I don’t have vanilla extract and I couldn’t find it in my country. Is it okay if I am not adding that vanilla? or there is another vanilla that I can use ?
