Tuesday Things.
1. I need nothing else. Cheesy earthquake bread.
2. Okay guys. Very important question. WHAT THE HECK do we eat during our kitchen renovation? I am very stressed out about this. And it’s not even going to be that long – just a few weeks. We aren’t doing anything too massive. But I’m scared of the food/dirty dishes sitch.
3. Shamrock shakes: yes or no? I just cannot. But I definitely won’t turn my nose up at Lucky Charms. Riddle me that.
4. I’m very much dying over the Beauty and the Beast music video. I did not like cartoons or animated movies growing up (I have no idea why, but I don’t even think I’ve seen The Little Mermaid the whole way through. Am I monster?) UNTIL Beauty and the Beast. The song and video are making me weirdly emotional.
5. Ooooh so many good TV things. I am loving Homeland again (finally!) and ugh, was just sick over this week’s episode. Still loving Billions. Loving Big Little Lies… the cast is just so freaking good. and GIRLS!! Oh my gosh. I remember scenes of Hannah filming last year but FORGOT that this was going to be a storyline. And I hate Marnie. What an a-hole.
6. There might be more Gilmore Girls revival episodes? Thoughts?
7. Um, I’ve discovered another youtube genre that I’m obsessed with. BOOK youtube channels! Why have I never watched these before? I love love love them. I haven’t got hooked on any particular channel yet, but I watched a bunch of book reviews on Saturday night (wild life!) before starting a new one.
8. Speaking of, I read Swear on this Life and REALLY liked it.

Poor Desi, right? I’m starting to feel sorrier and sorrier for him. Although I was reading a review of this week’s episode yesterday that encouraged us all to remember he cheated on his girlfriend WITH Marnie in the first place and isn’t an awesome guy…I still feel like she emotionally abused him, which didn’t really fully click for me until this episode. Intense!

I am mid-kitchen reno currently and we’ve been eating sandwiches, stuff that’s reheatable, and of course take out. And since we’re without a sink we’re eating/drinking with all disposable stuff. It’s only temporary but it does suck! Good luck!Â
My friend Max (great name, right?) has a book YouTube channel! He’s not so much into chick lit like you (and I!!!) are, but he is a super cool guy if you want to check out his channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/welldonebooks :)
We are also going to start kitchen renos soon and I am worried about the same thing!!! I was hoping to make some freezer meals (like you did before Max was born), and just microwave them as necessary? The contractor said he’ll plug in our current fridge/freezer and microwave elsewhere so we can still use them during the renos. As for washing, the guest bathroom sink will be getting a lot more use (not looking forward to washing Pyrex containers in there), and using paper plates as much as possible.
BOOK YouTube channels??? Whaaat? Need to explore!
I so can identify with the whole cartoon thing…I never really watched/likes them going up. I also have a thing about Disney…on so many levels but I have to say that some of their full length features are worth watching. Beauty and the Beast …the original movie…has a magical quality and the music was wonderful. I just watch the Grande/Legend video. It was lovely and sweet. I heard the movie did not get great reviews but I probably will see it anyway.
We used our toaster oven. Lots of foil and paper products. Anything that needed to be washed we used the bath tub.
We’re just starting our kitchen reno and so far lots of take-out! Microwaving oatmeal, lots of fruit, hummus and celery, cheese and crackers, and pre-made fruit smoothies! Not fun at all but the end will be so worth it!
Same with shamrock shakes. But this ice cream though! http://saltandstraw.com/flavor/pots-of-gold-rainbows-2/
Get an instant pot! I think it is the perfect solution for kitchen renos!
Please share your kitchen renos with us! I’d love to see before and afters and everything that you’ve included in your new kitchen!!
When we moved into our house, our appliances were late arriving, so we ended up eating pizza for a week straight. I know, I am of no help!
We’re on month 2 of likely 3 kitchen reno– a full gut. I’m also pregnant so eating is slightly wonky to begin with. Luckily snacks for meals has been my mojo. We do oatmeal or avo toast for bfast and then a combo of sandwiches, crockpot, freezer soups, fruit/cheese/crackers, yogurt with mixins…nothing crazy, but fairly nutritious.
Some tips, depending on your setup:
-Get down to your necessities (guessing this may be hard for you, but it helps to not look at half a pantry that’s not usable…kinda like clearing out your “normal” clothes when pregnant, “that” stuff is useless to me)
-We moved a dresser into the dining room and use it to store all our food, dishes and utensils (we have about 3-5 plates/bowls/cups/mugs), basic spices, storage containers, etc. This is setup with our microwave, toaster, and fridge right nearby
-We’ve had paper and plastic available but have rarely used them. Sometimes with super messy things I will to keep bathroom sink cleanup easy.
-Each family member get a water bottle and avoid 17 glasses to wash per day
-Know it’s a phase, it’ll be over soon enough!
Also, not sure your circumstances, but I wish I had better packed away MUCH more of our house..it’s now all covered in dust — from bookshelves to basement storage and if I had known that I would have moved and covered things better. Good luck!!
i 100% agree on the dust situation ! cover what you can and put away what you can. i ended up getting from big lots super cheap like picnic table covers. vinyl on one side felt like on the other. used those to cover like book shelves, etc i didnt want to empty. and putting towels at the bottom of closed doors like bedrooms can really help. its amazing where the dust can go !!!
Toaster oven, slow cooker, electric griddle, panini press.. maybe some freezer soups if you have an extra burner on the grill outside? But bottom line, at the end of it, you’re probably still going to wind up eating lots of take out at least for dinner. And I despise paper plates/plastic cutlery, but it’s really the only way to go if you’re without a sink for a long while.
Yes! to Shamrock shakes. Someone turned me on to asking for crushed oreos inside it a while back, too. ;)
I think we’re on the same book path! I had just finished ‘The One that Got Away’ when you posted about it, and now just finished ‘Swear on this Life!’ I’m now reading ‘Maybe in Another Life’ if we can keep the streak going! I really really loved Colleen Hoover’s ‘It Ends with Us’ if you haven’t read that yet. Took me down a worm hole of reading ALL of her books.
When we did our kitchen Reno we ate lots of salad and grilled a lot! I washed the dishes in the bathroom sink – not ideal
Take out gets really old!
I LITERALLY just binge watched a bunch of book youtube videos this weekend. Rincey Reads is my favorite so far–any recs?
RE: kitchen renos. We set up a trestle table in our living room with toaster oven, slow cooker and rice cooker (amazing what you can cook in a rice cooker!) Also agree with other posters – freezer meals!
Was the dishes in the bathroom sink.Â
We just finished our kitchen renovation. We grabbed paper plates and plastic cups/utensils for the 3 weeks we were under construction and then raided the Costco frozen section for things like chicken pot pies and French bread pizzas (we basically ate like college students) that we could cook in the toaster oven. I also premade some spaghetti casseroles and enchiladas that we could reheat. Good luck!
I never watched many tv cartoons but I loved the animated movies. The little Mermaid isad a big favorite – the music and animation are wonderful. I bet Max would love Aladdin with Robin Williams as the genie. Brilliant. This is all before computer generated animation so it looks different (I prefer it…)
Toaster oven! We survived three months without a kitchen and with a 3 year old on a toaster oven, hot plate, and our outdoor grill. I prepped cookie dough, lasagnas (in disposable loaf pans from the Dollar Tree), and quadrupled a batch of pancakes prior to the start of the project. I undercooked the pancakes slightly so when toasted they were perfect. We still only went out to eat once a week. Hot plate was crucial for boiling water for pasta. I think it was $13 at Target so well worth the money. We washed dishes in the stationary tubs in the basement and set up a drying rack situation on the washing machine, transporting them all between the two floors in laundry bins.
I had a makeshift kitchen in my basement for 4 months back in 2012. Â It’s not fun but you can do a lot if you’re determined. I posted about it as it went along on my blog if you want to see what we did. Â
When we demo-ed and redid our kitchen (which took far longer than predicted) we grilled A LOT and also used the slow cooker. I also made bigger portions than normal so that we’d have more leftovers. Microwave reheating saves time, energy, and stress.Â
My husband did our kitchen renovations himself so it was a weekend only job and took a little while – we are lucky enough to have a basement sink for dishes but we lived off crock pot meals for the few months. The easy clean up bags for the crock pot help – one less thing to clean.
OMG what a good idea. trying to wash a crockpot in the bathroom sink seems like a nightmare !
OMG you have to read “Before We Were Strangers” By Renee Carlino then! I read it in…one day I think? I couldn’t put it down. It was definitely one of those laugh-cry-be enraged-love type books. ugh so good. Would you ever think of doing a book recommendation page or do you have a Good Reads? I know you mention books alot in your crumb posts but it would be amazing to have a scrolling list. –Not like you have enough on your plate already–sorry!
I have never had a shamrock shake but I’ll take a mcflurry any day! Or lucky charms!
During my kitchen reno i made huge pans of lasagna before and micro’ed them. also lots of sandwiches and microwaved steamed frozen veggies. some take out here and there to but my goal was not to eat to much takeout. buckwheat toaster waffles w pb for breakfast or hard boiled eggs. salads with lunch meat/boiled eggs. cheese/grapes/crackers/wine nights. soups both homemade before and boxed. the dish situation sucked. eventually i started using lots of paper plates and cups and just felt guilty that i was a big earth-hater during those 3 months. good luck !
During your kitchen renovation, you should dust off your crockpot! Also, if you make sandwiches, consider using your waffle maker to “panini” them up! :) You will eat a lot better than if you survive on P&B sammys & restaurant food. Also, give yourself permission to use (and reuse) paper plates & put names on glasses so you can reuse them again & again. No need for dirty dishes to pile up. Good luck & know it will be worth it in the end.
Also, I don’t like cartoon movies OR cartoon shows for adults (like Bob’s Burgers) for no real reason. I have avoided all cartoony things for much of my life. Once exception: Christmas cartoon movies like The Grinch that Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph & Frosty. I promise I am not a Grinch in the rest of life though! :)
After many years of not having one, I drove through McD’s for a shamrock shake last year. They added whipped cream & a cherry and overall I found it to be disappointing. I guess it’s not one of those old timey favorites with a soft spot in my heart… Oh well. Happy St. Patty’s Day!
Kitchen Renos…UGHH!! The end result is fabulous, but having lived through TWO…I won’t sugar coat it, they suck! I did dirty dishes in my bath tub (insert monkey covering his face emoji here, along with the crying emoji) – Lots of take out, microwaveable meals and easy things like grilled cheese or salads. GOOD LUCK and please share pictures of your AFTER!! :)
Answer to Number 2# When I remolded my kitchen (a 4 week process) I made a lot of freezer meals that could be popped into the Microwave or eaten cold I made Breakfast Burritos, hand pies, bacon and egg cups, lots of casseroles soups stew and savory hand pies Biscuits, Veggies Pastas (I got a hot plate for cooking the pasta. Made a lot of coffee cakes cinnamon rolls etc too for energy while I worked
POACHED CHICKEN in the freezer was my life saver during our kitchen renovation. Shredded and tossed on a bed of romaine for salads; shredded and tossed in tortillas for tacos; tossed in stock for chicken noodle soup…..and of course a trip to Costco for plastic cutlery and bowls and plates. Enjoy the new kitchen and KEEP COOKIN’
