August Favorites: Beauty.
Hooooowwww is it August already?!
I can’t even believe it!
This month I’ve really been into wearing a lot more makeup than I have in a while – which is super weird since it’s summer and it’s been hot! I’m currently trying the Bare Minerals Bare Pro foundation even though I hate foundation… but want something for a little more coverage on certain days. And can’t help but be a beauty junkie who tries everything when it comes out.
P.S. also still totally loving the Jouer Skinny Dip highlighter and that Laneige Lip Mask from last month. It’s the best.
Now on to this month’s loves!
SK-II Facial Essence. Oh gosh. I have SO wanted to hate this. So wanted to. You might remember that I bought the value set at the Nordstrom anniversary sale and I’ve been using it ever since. I freaking love this. I swear it has just made my skin… glowy and great? I’ve had no dryness issues this month, nothing like last month. I feel like this has made my skintone so even. Two things: I still hate the scent (maybe I’m more sensitive to it while pregnant) and I hate the delivery system of “pour into your hands and pat on your face” – no matter what I feel that some gets wasted. I know there is a pump bottle but it’s million dollars. Just have to say that I am L.O.V.I.N.G. this.
Commodity Gold cologne. A month or so ago my cousin texted me a picture of this in sephora and was like “YOU NEED THIS IT SMELLS LIKE YOU” which of course meant I had to get the travel size to try it. Rollerballs and travel sprays are something I have a love/hate relationship with because I can try a ton of scents, but it keeps me from having that nostalgic scent memory since I have so much dang perfume now and always wear something different. I do absolutely love this. If you like warm, vanilla-y (not sugar cookie though), amber-y scents, this will totally be right up your alley. Of course I also had to try the Elizabeth and James Nirvana Amethyst since I love the Bourbon and Black so much. I really like it but still on the fence – I don’t think I like it MORE than Bourbon or Black.
Pat McGrath Matte Trace Lipstick in Full Panic. I bought into the hype on these Pat McGrath lipsticks and I have to say I am obsessssssed with this color. I probably should have grabbed another shade because this is very similar to my favorite MAC shade in Relentlessly Red, but this is arguably more comfortable to wear and not as drying! It also might be a little more orange. While I’m sort of over the matte lip trend for myself (because ouch), I do love these brighter shades in matte.
Anastasia Aurora Glow Palette. Yes, I feel a little goofy even talking about this and being in my 30s but, uh, hello, I LOVE THE SHIMMER!! This is one of the palettes that I mentioned impulse buying a few months ago and I’ve been loving it all summer. I was sure once I got it home I would end up returning it, but I adore it. I use it for highlighter, eyeshadow, inner corner highlight, etc. The colors don’t look crazy on me but I’m also super pale.
OUAI Memory Mist. I’ve been super into curling my hair lately (I swear it’s because I know in two more months I won’t have time to do anything!) and grabbed this at Sephora a few weeks ago. I love the texturizing powders and I still use the Kenra blow dry spray, but this is sort of a cross between the two: a heat protectant and a product that is supposed to hold your style until the next washing. I’ve been using it on damp hair, then drying and curl. Loving it so far and I’m pretty sure it’s been doing what it is supposed to!
Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Cream. I took the plunge! I’ve been eyeing this for a long time and since my Sunday Riley Tidal was gone, I decided to grab this instead. This is perfection for my skin, both morning and night. I love it under makeup. Occasionally, I still have to use something heavier (like the FAB Ultra Repair) but I’ve been using this consistently twice a day all month.
That’s all for this month! One thing I’m really thinking of trying is the Algenist Liquid Collagen. It has such amazing reviews! Have you tried it? I’d love to hear what you are loving this month!
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are some amazon and general reward style affiliate links above. thank you for being here!}

I can’t get over all the Drunk Elephant packaging. It’s so freaking cute! Last time I went to Sephora I tried on so much Drunk Elephant stuff that the back of my hands were a sticky mess by the time I left. Haha!
hahaha!! it is the cutest. so is the name!
The Peter Thomas Roth Rose mask is amazing! I’ve been using it in place of night cream over the PTR Retinol Fusion and the combo of the two is perfection. The Sephora Lashcraft Big Volume mascara is great for the price. I also just got a sample of the Fresh Black Team night mask… and I don’t want to love it because it’s SO expensive, but I swear, my skin glows now. I might have to be “that girl” who gets samples every few weeks and try to hold out for the VIB sale.
i just got a sample of that mascara! can’t wait to try it. also i’ve tried that fresh mask before and it is amazing. love it!

I have 30 year old dry skin like you and what I’ve been doing for my summer routine is: tatcha moisturizer cream (my fav for dry sensitive skin), hourglass no 28 primer, hourglass illusion skin tint, sephora liquid highlighter (very sheer and natural glowy), nars liquid blush (still can’t decide if I like this or not, have you tried it?), and tatcha dewy skin mist. Â And then whatever else I feel like adding like bronzer etc. And the new Anastasia gloss in parfait is so pretty for summer. Oh and my new fav nail polish is OPI gin and tectonic (a pinky rosy nude). Â Thanks for always sharing your favs!
love this!! that tatcha mist will forever be one of my faves!
I love the scent of all The Ouai products, but nothing has worked for me to the point where I’ve switched everyday products. I have also been wanting to hate the SK-II essence but EVERYONE loves it, which is why i keep resisting buying it… But i know I will eventually. The have oily/combo skin and can get some pretty gnarly dry patches and texture due to acne medications and the Lancome Genifique serum is a saving grace. It makes my skin feel so much more hydrated, and smoother and plump-highly recommend!
i am trying the ouai oil and am not really that impressed! i agree, the scent is amazing. and ughhh the SK-II is just so good. i hate that i love it.
OK- I am buying the lala retro on your reccomendation right now and PLEASE let us know if you go fro the algenist. I would go for it now but I am nervous about the stickiness? Relentless Red is a favorite shade, but yes SO drying- thanks for the tip- another super pigmented but slightly less drying lip is anastasia liquid lip. Carina is my fav color.Â
i ordered it! i’ll keep you posted. :) and omg i also love the carina lipstick!! we have so many of the same faves.
I was so tempted by that ABH Glow Kit!! I went with UD’s Afterglow highlight palette instead, and I do LOVE it. Have you been watching all the Subculture drama unfold? I had zero interest in that palette, but couldn’t stop watching the reviews.Â
I was in Erie last week to visit my fam, and hardly wore makeup, but I’ve been trying a ton of new stuff lately! I bought two of the new Lorac Unzipped palettes and I think they’re beautiful, and I also bought the Elf Mad for Matte 2. It’s lots of warm, sunset-like colors, and it’s amazing for being so affordable. Must stop buying eyeshadows!Â
Hi Jessica! Long-time reader (and one who’s especially fond of your lifestyle posts) here with a quick tip… A couple mutual beauty-favourite brands I know you’ve posted about before – Jouer, Beauty Blender, and Drunk Elephant – are all donating recent product purchase proceeds to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Jouer’s promo runs until August 31st and donates 25% of each purchase’s profits, while Beauty Blender is today only but goes real big by DOUBLING donations for each dollar spent! Really great stuff. I guess it’s worth saying I have no brand affiliation, but thought of you when I saw these retailers featured for their humanitarian work. Sending love from Canada!
oh my gosh this is amazing! i had no idea – thanks so much for the tip!
I’ve been using May Coop raw sauce as an essence and it is fantastic! It comes in a huge bottle that lasts forever. Total game changer for my dry skin. That and Sunday Riley good genes I’m like a new person.Â

Hi Jessica! Â Let me say that I like it when you “pepper” the blog with beauty and lifestyle loves ! But I also love your recipes and am anxiously awaiting you new cookbook!
I Â was thinking about the Algenist collagen product but after reading up on collagen production and supplementation, believe that it cannot be effectively absorbed in that form as the product claims it can. Â (its a molecular thing!) Â I have tried most of their products and they ARE stinky, except for the Genius cream, which smells like Horchata to me– ok but pricey.Â
I used a whole jar of Lala cream but rather repurchase their Marula oil, its great! I also love the clean scent of the Ouai restorative shampoo,  it lasts for days!  I love Renee Rouleau skin products and am trying Kat Burki as well!
Cannot wait for the permanent line of Pat McGrath makeup to roll out this month! Love ABH glow kits!
Ok, I looked up the LaLa Retro at Sephora. we have a Sephora at JCPenney right down the street. Thank god for a JCPenney credit card. I’ll give it a try.
Oooooh you and I love ALL the same perfumes so I am DEFINITELY going to get this Commodity Gold. I actually bought the Commodity Book and LOVE. IT. I highly recommend! I have been wanting to try the Lalo Whipped so I will definitely be trying it. Since retinols aren’t pregnancy friendly what have you been using in terms of Chemical or Physical exfoliants?! My skin is soooo textured right now because I cannot get a decent exfoliation due to pregnancy! I miss my RetinA! I am thinking of picking up the NeoGen Gauze Peel pads in Lemon or the FAB Radiance pads. I am in desperate need of a good mascara any recommendations?!
i also like lala cream but haven’t needed it as much in the summer. i really like the kenra hot spray 20 when i curl my hair. i put it on dry hair before i curl the section and it really helps it stay. its crunchy at first but then i let the curls cool and comb through . this helps my curls last all day. other than that….i am still into bite lipsticks for lips. i have been liking the essie gel couture polishes. i have a red and hot pink and really feel like that top coat helps them last at least 3-5 days with no chipping. i have a nude color that is just so so. i need to try another since i can get a good 5+ days out of a nude with that top coat. i just tried a sample of the new lancome monsieur big and thought it was pretty good but as the tub got older it did flake a tiny bit. im back today to my hypnose drama and reminded how much i really like that one !
im blah on the blush game. i feel like the powder ones im using lately are splotchy on my skin and just seem odd. i gotta get something else. i also just got laura mercier secret camo concealer for under the eye but its been 2 days so to early to tell. always looking for something to deal with dark circles !
