Tuesday Things.
1. I can’t get over the prettiness of this rhubarb upside down cake!
2. But see also, I’ve barely ever had rhubarb. Maybe twice or thrice. Never on its own. What does it taste like? Because it looks like pink celery and if it tastes anything like it for real, I’m out.
3. When I was a kid, my mom would pack up all of our winter clothes and store them for the summer and vice versa. Eventually she stopped doing that, but I’m curious if you do (or ever did) it! I do not, but briefly considered it this week while sorting my kids’ piles of itty bitty clothes.
4. Starbucks has a new cold brew with cold foam and while I really loved it, I find it impossible to drink from the adult sippy cup! Especially if I’m driving? Or holding kids? So I just asked for a straw like the huge embarrassment that I am.
5. I can’t stop following the coverage on the Hawaii volcano and the creeping lava. It’s terrifying but I also can’t turn away because it’s something I’ve never seen before in real life. I remember being taught about it in school, but seeing it happen is just crazy.
6. All I have to say about TV this week? BILLIONS IS SO AMAZING! It just gets better and better. I looooove the storyline and that episode was so good. I hope we go into new territory now where those three team up again or something. I love Axe so much – he’s like a 2018 Tony Soprano. Does illegal things but is a character that you can’t help loving. On another note, did you see the previews for this week’s Grey’s Anatomy? Oh boy.
7. Tell me your thoughts on hot sauce. Such a riveting question, I know. I am NOT a lover of hot sauce – I personally think it ruins everything. But my brothers and cousins put it on everything! Your stance?
8. So funny: all of our instagrams are the same.
9. I didn’t grow up listening to country music (and my parents both still loathe it) and it wasn’t until the end of college that I got into it (the Kenny Chesney boom, I think) – but I loooove listening to it when it starts to get warm and summer comes around. It’s all I can play right now!
10. Kerry Washington at the Met Gala. J Lo. Gigi Hadid. Those dresses! OMG amazing.

My husband puts cottage cheese and hot sauce on everything. I threatened divorce the day I made a gorgeous risotto and he went to the fridge to get them. So gross.
I know, I made a beautiful omelet for my husband …….ketchup all over it!
Now I make him a ketchup omelet….gross, but he loves it.
no,no,no I don’t like rhubarb! My grandmother would make it in a strawberry rhubarb pie, it looked beautiful, and I’m sure it tasted great, but no. My daughters eat it raw, they say it’s sour. My mother grows it. Not for me.
I think it’s a very English thing.
Growing up, I had a cousin that put mustard on literally everything but cereal. She would eat mustard sandwiches-just white bread and mustard.
My inlaws grew rhubarb and she was a great cook/baker. Everyone loved her rhubarb crisp, etc but no, just no.
I ordered the nitro cold brew by accident last week and was like, what am I supposed to do with this sippy top? I also ended up using a straw! Solidarity against the sip top!
I haven’t had it but it’s weird to me they think someone would want to drink a cold beverage without a straw? I guess just so people can taste the foam? Still weird!
I have a winter bin and a summer bin. Most of my clothes stay in my closet all year, but things like T-shirts and summer skirts and dresses go in the summer bin. Sweaters – why do I own so many sweaters? – go in the winter bin.
I was never a hot sauce fan until I tried Chipotle Tabasco. Now we’re never without it. My husband puts hot sauce on just about everything – sigh – so we have a lot of hot sauces in our house, but the Chipotle Tabasco is my favorite followed by Trader Joe’s Chili Pepper Sauce, which is a more all purpose hot sauce.
2 – rhubarb, when done well, is delicious. strawberry rhubarb pie is the best
3 – my mom would have good intentions of doing this every year, and depending on the amount of storage, we would pack the obvious big coats and boots and things like that but Virginia weather was somewhat unpredictable…I don’t currently switch out closets, I’m blessed with plenty of storage space and a not ginormous wardrobe
7 – my husband has now converted me to putting hot sauce on eggs and potatoes at breakfast ALL. THE. TIME. Cholula Chipotle isn’t super spicy but is delicious.
9 – same. Summer is country/Jimmy Buffett season
Cholula hot sauce is my life. Seriously. When Costco carries it, I buy multiple bottles.
Also, Gigi Hadid? That dress was unbelievable. Loved it!
2 – It surprises me you don’t eat a lot of rhubarb! I love a good strawberry rhubarb pie! I love how sour it is. The tang is super versatile, but it is hard to find in stores, at least in TX.
7 – Speaking of TX, the hot sauce game is real down here. I’m always shopping around for local varieties at the farmers market. WE OWN TOO MANY JARS OF HOT SAUCE BUT I DON’T CARE. But I do always go back to original Tabasco as my fave, reminds me of my childhood.
I have always switched out my clothes each Spring and Fall. The closet and chest of drawers in my bedroom are cleaned out and moved to my spare bedroom. And the clothes that were stored in my spare bedroom are re-organized, sorted through, and then rehung back in my bedroom’s closet for the current season. I always feel like I have brand new wardrobe since a lot of items I don’t see for six months. Living in Michigan, you have to clothes for all four seasons.
I work from home and don’t really have a lot of clothes and about 90% of what I own can be worn all year – jeans and tees on their own or throw a cardi or sweater on top for autumn/winter. I do however have a small IKEA wardrobe in my laundry room where I’ll store dresses in the winter (and then they come into my closet for spring/summer) and the winter sweaters go into the wardrobe in spring/summer. No use having things you won’t use take up space. Though I have a tiny closet so the space is valuable.
Hot sauce. Have you ever tried the Tabasco green jalapeno flavor? It’s my favorite. I like regular hot sauce ok, but that one actually tastes like jalapenos. It’s delicious!
Oh man, I want to read this coverage about the volcano! I think the link is wrong though?
ah sorry!! i fixed it!
That rhubarb cake is stunning! I hate hate hate celery too. But rhubarb is sooo good! When you cook it, it loses that celery-like texture it looks like it has. And the flavor is amazing. Tangy and tart! I know it goes super well with strawberries as it’s always paired with, but I actually just made some bars with a raspberryyy rhubarb curd (like a lemon bar!) and omg. I’m forever a raspberry rhubarb fan now. <3
Yeah girl. It does taste like you’d imagine pink celery would.
As a fellow celery hater, you have nothing to worry about!! I love rhubarb and with your loves of citrus and bitter/sour, I think you’d really like it!
I have a rhubarb patch at my house that is from my late grandmother’s garden. It’s awesome in pie, jam and margaritas…OMG. I love it. I want to try roasting it and put it on top of warmed brie…yeah, I’m drooling. My rhubarb is ready to be picked. It will continue to grow throughout the summer until the fall. It does well in full sun or shade. It’s a great thing to have!
I always store my out of seasons clothes – people act like Im a nut for doing so! But it makes life easier imo! Also this cold brew you keep mentioning has me so confused – its a cold drink they serve in a hot cup? I would have assumed it comes with a straw! I would have to get straw too!
Weird, when I ordered the cold foam cold brew it came in a regular iced coffee cup with a straw!
I had a rhubarb and almond tart at a restaurant last night!
I make apple and rhubarb crumble and rhubarb sponge and serve them with homemade custard – so good! I live in New Zealand tho. I agree it’s a British thing!
I also hate celery but I love rhubarb! It’s so tart and fresh-tasting. I think you would dig it!
My mother in law makes the best rhubarb crisp, but unfortunately I have some sort of allergy to rhubarb! It makes me SO freaking sick!! :( Hot sauce also makes me sick…only because it’s nasty. I’ve never been a big condiment person! Don’t like ketchup, mustard, mayo, hot sauce, etc. I do finally like buffalo sauce!!
I never ever thought I’d like rhubarb but had a massive rhubarb plant in Alaska. I found a recipe from Pilsbury in the paper for a Country Rhubarb Tart. ohhh my goodness. It’s pure heaven still make it inthe spring when you see the beautiful pink stalks in the produce isle. If you’re a lover of tart – try a little baking with rhubarb. I’m a fan of all things rhubarb!
Amusingly, I just got the new cold brew today and was momentarily stunned by the sippy top. I waited a second for a straw before I realized it wasn’t coming. I’ll definitely be asking for one next time.
Rhubarb is one of my favorites. It’s sour. Try it in a rhubarb crisp first, because the sugar evens it out. Of course, you’ll have to put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Heaven!
We are hot sauce lovers in our house, but we don’t add it to everything. We have three kids and two of them don’t like spicy things, so it’s how we add spice to our food. I think we have about seven different kinds. We took chili to a friend’s house once and were shocked that they didn’t have even one bottle or even red pepper flakes. That was a sad, sad bowl of chili.
I grew up eating rhubarb as it grew wild in our backyard. Since it’s extremely tart/sour we would fill a Dixie cup with sugar and dip the stalks in it and eat it that way. I love rhubarb desserts!
Summer and Winter clothes – yes! I do not do this now, because I have a walk in closet that holds everything. But my entire childhood we totally made a day of it… bringing out the summer clothes and putting away the winter ones. Going through the summer clothes and finding stuff you forgot you had. It was a great day! Thanks for the reminder on that!! 😊
For starters, I always drink my coffee with a straw so you are not alone!. Doesn’t matter if it’s in a mug at home, at Starbucks, hot or cold. Always with a straw! Try Koffie Straws (on Amazon). They’re amazing and silicone and help keep your teeth white! Also, I agree with your brothers and cousins that hot sauce has a place on just about everything. I am what most people would refer to has a hot sauce addict.
Cholula on EVERYTHING
I distinctly remember having boxes of summer and winter clothes when we were kids. It was just what we always did! But, as an adult I have never done this. It’s more like my “Box of clothes that don’t fit anymore, but I’m sure they will again one day”. hahahah
Love rhubarb! Yes, I switch out clothes for myself and the kids but my husband does not. I wear very different clothes depending on the season (jersey sundresses and shorts, instead of wool sweaters and jeans) so it makes sense for me. My kiddos would be asking for shorts all winter if I left them in their dresser and I just don’t care to have that argument so frequently!
I like hot sauce, but to me it has a place. Nothing like a drizzle of hot sauce on some carnitas tacos, balancing the flavor with some guacamole and chips and cooling down with a margarita. So yummy! Yes to country music. I didn’t grow up listening to it either, but now that’s mostly all I listen to, the Whole year and it’s b/c it reminds me of sunny days!
I’m feelin you on the Kenny Chesney music! We live in Minneapolis and just saw him in concert last Saturday. It was fantastic! Also, can’t wait for Greys!
Rhubarb – great versatile ingredient. I recommend trying it sweet first. Pies, crumbles, bars, etc. I actually grew up eating it stewed with tons of sugar and strawberries.
Fun rhubarb suggestions:
Rhubarb lemonade cocktails or mocktails with mint. So, so yummy.
It’s also a really cool addition to barbecue sauce. Tart! Complements pork really well.
We have at least 20 kinds of hot sauce at our house at any given moment. I have a bottle of Sriracha on my desk at work because my employer replaced all the Sriracha with a cheapo replacement. Now you know my views on hot sauce… :)
i do not like hot stuff hence no hot sauce for me.
as for rhubarb…when i was a kid i remember my mom or grandma saying something about it being poisonous or something during some part of the growing process or before it turned x color or raw or something weird ? so i always was like scared of it ? so…i googled to see if this was just crazy…. and here. did you know this ? i guess my mom wasn’t crazy ? but for whatever reason i was afraid to touch it, etc and afraid when she made a pie with it everyone would die ? i know its crazy.
Rhubarb leaves contain poisonous substances, including oxalic acid, which is a nephrotoxic and corrosive acid that is present in many plants. Humans have been poisoned after ingesting the leaves, a particular problem during World War I when the leaves were mistakenly recommended as a food source in Britain.
Team hot sauce (always have at least four brands in the house at all time), and storing clothes for the winter/summer! #oldhousesmallclosetsproblems
You should definitely check out/experiment with rhubarb! I just discovered it a few years ago & love it. I’ve made raspberry rhubarb muffins and put some rhubarb in a thai peanut stir fry- good sweet/tangy flavor.
Definitely sort my winter and summer clothes. Mostly because I have too many clothes for my closet to hold it all and it feels like you go shopping when you switch the seasons out and you see clothes you forgot about.
Is this cupcake recipe (the sprinkle ones in the photo) in the Pretty Dish?
i put hot sauce on everything (even though sometimes my stomach hates me for it). normally we prefer frank’s, but i saw someone else mention tabasco’s chipotle hot sauce – that one is soo good. the green sauce is too – it’s more mild.
Is this a cup recipe , ? Well thank you so much for this blog will rate 5
