Tuesday Things.
1. Last night I dropped my slow cooker lid and it shattered into a billion pieces. It was glass – but many of you reminded me that when I first started my blog, I dropped another slow cooker lid and it shattered too! What is it with me and lids?
2. I must ask: did you bite the pumpkin bullet today? Pumpkin spice isn’t my cup of tea, but I might get pumpkin iced coffee from Dunkin. It’s the best and not as spice-like.
3. Does this not look like the most perfect frozen margarita? I don’t even love frozen margs and I want to faceplant into this ASAP.
4. So I know that plastic straws are horrible and we use mostly glass ones at home (these are my fave), but I CAN’T drink beverages from paper straws in restaurants or whatever. Those straws disintegrate in what seems like seconds! Guess I have to get used to the adult sippy cup.
5. Okay, so TV things! I didn’t watch anything except for the Yellowstone finale and I really liked it but was also confused. I wonder if I just like it so much because it brings me back to my Dances with Wolves Kevin Costner love. I mean, I was, like, eight years old. The other thing I did watch, however, was To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before on Netflix! It was super cute. So short and quick too.
6. OMG. I hate myself, but this is my life. When people don’t use punctuation, or worse yet, when they use A PERIOD after a text message, I just straight up assume they hate me. Like the other day I texted my mom about a time to bring Max over, and she responded “fine.” FINE? Like FINE, period. That’s the kind of text I would send my high school boyfriend in a fight or something. Communication in 2018 is the worst.
7. Guys, I have a horrific confession. You will not even believe this, especially because I love to read so much, but… I have never read Harry Potter. Never. I feel like it came out at an odd age for me. I was going into high school and I remember my mom reading it to my youngest brother, but I think I was bratty or something and thought I was too old? Maybe? I have no idea. It’s also a very different genre that I was into. But… I can’t wait to read them to Max. And I sort of want to read them now myself, but also want to wait awhile and read them together so we can both be excited.
8. After watching my friend Laura document her sourdough bread making adventures on instagram, I’m obsessed with making my own! However, I fear that this may not be possible for someone as impatient as myself.
9. Tell me about your paper mail storage. I sort of want to put some sort of thing on our wall so the paper and mail stops cluttering up the counter!

I have a small utility cart right inside my mud room, just big enough on top to hold one of those inbox trays. When I come in the house, the mail goes there till I decide to sort thru it. Keeps it off my counters and kitchen table.
It’s never too late to read Harry Potter! I was also anti but then in high school French class we had to read it …in French! Guess who read along in English at the same time, haha. I was hooked and then read the rest! My husband and I now love to watch the movies and one of our favorite things is to have a HP movie marathon on snowy/cold winter weekends!
Huge Potterhead here. I have a coworker who decided to do the same thing and read them along with her sons at bedtime when they were 3rd gradeish. But she got so into them that she would secretly read the books after they went to bed but pretend she was still reading along with them!
You will love them, plus the merchandise situation is like a wonderful black pit. I will say I think 3rd grade is about the time to start reading, any earlier and it is kind of scary. The first one’s not too bad but MAN do they start getting scary around 4 and 5.
And my (dorky) friends and I all got into them our sophomore year of high school. We got super competitive over who could finish them first!
Oh my word. Paper storage is the BANE of our family. We finally talked it out as a couple (most rediculous and useful convo ever) this past Saturday. We came up with a system. And really, that was the problem. Not storage, not location. System. And we got it mostly figured out. But the Moment Of Truth is this week, the first week of school with now 2 kids in school. Gulp.
I’m with you on the texting punctuation. If someone doesn’t respond with an exclamation point or an lol it’s like they hate me!! Why are we like this!?
I never read Harry Potter until last year. I read them before my daughter was in 3rd grade because I had heard some of them were dark and a little heavy for a 9 year old. So glad I did! 1. They are so good. 2. They get darker as they go along and it was good to know what she was going to see. We read them together up u til book 3. It’s so fun! I think we may reread book 1 for the fall.
Paper storage – I made a rule, you do not get the mail unless you will spend 3 minutes throwing away the junk mail. I get the mail throw away all the junk. I put the magazines on the coffee table (because I am an old lady and still get magazines) and then the remaining mail goes in a box on the desk in my office and I *should* go through it once a week and pay bills, etc.
The worst thing paperwise I had was preschool papers. My kids brought home so much paper. I put a trash can in the garage and threw away all the junk when we got home from preschool — work sheets, papers with scribbles, etc. the stuff I wanted to keep goes in a box and I sort it at the end of the year. (In theory, my baby started first grade this year and I still have to go through her pre-K box. The fridge stuff obviously went on the fridge.
But it’s become habit and now my kids have a folder to keep important schoolwork in and they just throw away the papers they don’t need.
So, paper I have under control. My garage however, is a horrible disaster.
Check out the Artkive app. You take a photo of the drawings/projects and add a description. At the end of the year you can order a book with all of their projects in it! I have two boys and this has saved my sanity and the amount of paper I have to store. Plus they love looking through their books and seeing all of their work!
I read Harry Potter for the first time a year and a half ago when I was 37. It also was a big thing at a strange time. I was in college and didn’t really “get it.” I fell in love and will always hold that world in a special pose in my heart. READ THEM!!!!! It took me 6 months to read all of the books. I also had never watched the movies and waited until I was done with the books to watch.
I have read the books numerous times since my 5th grade teacher read the first one to us way back when they first came out. I have a special place in my heart for these wonderful books and cannot wait to read them with my son…in about 9 years since he’s only 10 months old…so long to wait but I am so excited to share that world with him!
HP – me to didnt read them at the time. i recently started (slowly) to read them andi like them ! they are a great escape. i just finished book 3. i take breaks and read other things. i have also avoided the movies so its all a big surprise to me and i love that !
paper – LOL i suck at that let me know when you figure it out.
what staws do you like i need some !!!!
We have the same issue with paper mail storage! We got this and it’s hanging in the kitchen:
https://www.target.com/p/zinc-galvanized-mailbox-hearth-hand-153-with-magnolia/-/A-52774125?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Home+Decor+Shopping_Priority+Brands&adgroup=SC_Hearth&Hand&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9014984&gclid=CjwKCAjw5ZPcBRBkEiwA-avvkwduNS-961WDm2qYs5dXmnKtwSUiACKtx-8Y_2nvSga9ute63evpUhoCBh4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Only downside is that we often forget the mail that is in there :-/
I go through the mail right after I get it. I am less likely to lose important documents this way and I don’t have to think about storing the mail to be sorted later. Seriously, it only takes a minute and it has made my life so much easier.
Get the illustrated versions of Harry Potter to read to Max. They are absolutely beautiful! My oldest boy is 7 and I think I might start reading HP to him this winter.
We destroy glass stuff here all the time. Except it is usually a jar filled with some sort of gooey sauce—because sweeping would be too easy. I watched To All the Boys I’ve Loved. I like to think there’s still a teenage girl in my 36 year old self, and she loved it. At least your mom didn’t text in all caps. Then she’d be yelling. I bought a Kvissle from Ikea for the wall to hold papers. The bad news is that it just moves the pile from the counter to the wall. It doesn’t purge and incinerate. I think that’s what I really need.
Ha! Purge and incinerate… agree
I never read Harry Potter books either, but now I read them with my 8 year old son. He has to read for 20 minutes a night for school and we do it together with HP. It was not a genre I was into ever before, but it’s fun to see the magical world unfold.
I’ll be jumping on the pumpkin spice bandwagon soon with my favorite pumpkin spice treat (stay tuned ;) ); and I will forever use plastic straws. Personal choice.
I’m an immediate sorter and trash all the junk mail. The only thing I can not seem to get rid of is BBB coupons so we have a little container on our counter that fits those/note pads/pens
Any mail that sits unopened on the counter for more than 48 hours gets moved to a more obnoxious place so it gets dealt with faster (two very type A people) 😂😂
So here’s the deal, read HP to yourself first. That way when you read it to Max and you get to emotional scenes in the book you won’t sob, and your child will not worry about you and think you need therapy. I did not do this, we read them as quickly as the books came out (my oldest son is 24), so there were times when I was a little emotional, and he had to take over reading aloud for a little bit.
I couldn’t see the link to the glass straws! Could you please re-post? Or send to me directly? Thank you!!
ah sorry! i fixed it above – they are these hummingbird straws! https://www.amazon.com/Hummingbird-Glass-Straws-Clear-Pride/dp/B00KM61F88
Thanks so much!
I would love to start using glass straws but didn’t see the link to them. Could you send me the link when you get a chance?
Thank you Thank you!!!

Love HP! Glass straws are the best – no link showed – I have been using Strawsome for years https://www.strawesome.com/shop/glass-straws-cause/feeding-america-the-carrot-straw/ and they have cases so you can carry one with you so no need for paper straws in restaurants! They have plain and designer ones as well as fundraiser ones (the one I linked is for nokidhungry and has a carrot on it – love mine!)
I thought I was the only one in the world that hasn’t read Harry Potter. I haven’t seen any of the movies, either!
In all the years I’ve been following you (congratulations on babies, cookbooks, etc…) I have never left a comment. But your confession of never yet reading Harry Potter brought me to my keyboard. You must read them now. Max will not be ready for them for years. They are not baby books and each one gets more intense. And they are brilliant!! I’m jealous. To read them again fresh would be such a treat!! I think I had a child so I could share them with her (just kidding but not really). My daughter is as obsessed as I am. Read them. Enjoy. You’ll know when Max will be ready to read them. Do not let him watch the movies first.
And I love your blog. Your food is beautiful and when I do make some of it- delicious. Thank you for that :)
Yes, read Harry Potter anyway! It’s so worth it :) I read the books for the first time when I was like 35. And now we bought the Blu-ray set on Prime Day, which kinda makes me want to read the books again. Do it!
I have also never read Harry Potter-for the same reasons. I thought I was “too old” at the time, though I remember my younger sister and my dad reading it. This reminds me of Anne Bogels podcast- What Should I Read Next? Last week, she asked her readers/listeners to “confess their literary sins” and this was a popular one!
I haven’t read HP either! Maybe I’ll wait until my nephew is reading them and then I’ll start. Or, maybe I will just never read them, because that’s okay too! :-)
I got this mail and key storage solution from Etsy. I love it. Great quality and you can customize the colors. Really worked for what I needed, but I also realize I was working with a very specific tight spot and had tons of room in other places to deal with calendar/other random stuff.

I was slow to get on the Harry Potter train too. Like you, I was “too old” for the books when they first came out. I didn’t read them until my mid 20s, and then discovered that I. Love. Them! I have the hardcover books on my shelf, and I reread them almost every year. My husband I don’t have any children yet, but this series will definitely be something we read together. Until then, I’ll just reading them for me. :)
We have stainless steel straws to take out to restaurants/ cafes, a bigger size for the kids to have in smoothies etc and some little cocktail size ones for… cocktails, haha. Or kids sized drinks! They’re awesome.
I agree with everyone else who thinks you should read Harry Potter first, it will be ages until you can read them to Max (I also can’t wait to read them with my 3.5 yr old daughter too)! The first book is definitely a kids book but they get darker (and better!) as the series goes on. Scary bits & sad bits… and wonderful bits, haha, ok I’m a total fan!!
Echoing everyone else, do yourself a massive favour. READ HARRY POTTER! Those books are such a great escape. I read the first couple when I was in grade 11 and was hooked and bought them the day they came out. I also enjoyed the play that came out a couple of years ago and made the trek to NYC to see the play on Broadway in the spring. Also went to Universal to see the Harry Potter world! Total obsession. Lol
Not so patiently waiting until I can read HP with my daughter! (Though she is only 4 months and I keep saying she’ll never grow up because I’m going to keep her tiny 😭) I was at the exact right age when they came out, but somehow didn’t get into them until I was in high school/college. Even then, I think I watched the movies before reading the books, but now I’ve done both many, many times.
Have you seen the Illustrated versions of Harry Potter?! I think it would be great for a young child (and inner-child for an adult!) I started reading them at a young age then lost interest because I also thought I was too cool but now i want to read them again! I’m sure you can get them elsewhere as well but here is the LONG link! I think it’s only books 1-3, so far. https://shop.scholastic.com/parent-ecommerce/books/harry-potter-the-illustrated-collection-books-1-3-boxed-set-9781338312911.html?psch=SSO%2Fps%2F2017%2FGoogle%2Fpla%2F50-99.99%2FPLA%5BB%5DSingleBooks%7CDesk%2F%2F41802143182%2F%2FDedicatedHeadline%2FScholastic%20SSO%20799-543-7388%2F&k_clickid=e0cf2dd3-b47a-453d-8a67-6249ea467473&gclid=CjwKCAjw2rjcBRBuEiwAheKeL5A0wClZ0SHZID07ndonqdPpHMfCeft90D8nNA1ESlqEpaweCJ5zyRoC_S4QAvD_BwE
i’ve never read harry potter either! my brother and sister are fairly obsessed, but i never got into it either. perhaps we the same age bc when i look back, it was the same situation, kind of an awkward phase in life where it just didn’t fit into my life and lifestyle? idk, but happy there are others in my company :)
also the text link…YUP.
