Tuesday Things.
1. Coffee jelly. It’s a thing. A thing that I need.
2. This is craziness. For my entire life, whenever I eat walnuts, my tongue hurts. Like it feels like it’s being ripped up. I continue to eat walnuts though because I just figured it happened to EVERYONE. Eddie and I were out on Friday night and we had amazing roasted cauliflower with walnuts. It happened again and when he went to the restroom, I googled it and it said that means I have an oral allergy to walnuts. WHAT?!
3. Something else that’s funny that we always talk about. I have a great memory (was even better before I had kids!) and Eddie feels like he doesn’t have a great one. (Um, I’d agree.) I always feel like things happened 5 minutes ago (like our kids being born? Didn’t that just happen yesterday?!) while he always feels like things happened a super long time ago. It’s so weird!! Is this because I’m more nostalgic/sentimental than he is?
4. Last week I got to meet Valerie behind Lily & Val and oh my gosh, not only is she wonderful (and super sentimental like me!), she creates GORGEOUS work like this! Cutest right? Just go ahead and lose yourself on her instagram. It’s all over today.
5. We finished Jack Ryan this weekend! And I’m reeeeally excited that fun shows are coming back on this week. Can’t wait to sit and eat my tears while watching This Is Us. Ugh. I also want to watch Bodyguard!
6. I know I know I know that I really need a reasonable bedtime.
7. We were in Bath and Body Works few weeks ago (had to grab another Leaves candle, #basic) and I smelled one of the body lotions. I know that my scents have obviously changed as I’ve aged (especially after having kids) but as I smelled it, I couldn’t believe that I wore the body lotion at one time. Are there any scents you like that aren’t as… strangling.
8. Um this is so super true for us. The best baby toy is a TV remote.

I have oral allergies too! Not to walnuts, but apples almonds and cherries. People generally think I’m crazy when I try to explain it, so I’m glad to find someone else who has discovered them. Were the walnuts cooked? I tend to only have the allergy when I eat the foods raw, which gives me an excuse to bake!
Mine is to pineapple and kiwi. I used to be able to eat both but now I get this tingly feeling and my mouth feels like it’s swelling. But, like you, I can eat the pineapple if I roast or grill it first.
I also developed seasonal allergies as an adult (around the same time) and Google tells me that different oral allergies can also be related to specific pollen allergies. Lucky me, ha.
Pineapple and kiwi here too!!! (And strawberries!)
Kiwi and strawberries are strictly oral but pineapple juice causes me to breakout in hives if it touches my skin
Courtney Robert — my husband has the EXACT same thing and was just telling someone about it this weekend. So crazy. He actually had it grilled this weekend and it was fine, and he was like, HUH. WEIRD. Good to know it’s not just him! And that he probably should stay away from those fruits since it means he’s allergic, lol.
I am allergic to coconuts! My mouth does the tingly/burning/swelling and my skin will turn red and feel like it is burning. Thankfully the allergy is not life threatening, It took me about ten years to figure out that the Burt’s Bee lip balms should probably not burn my lips. LOL!
Mine is cantaloupe. Not honeydew or watermelon or casaba, just specifically cantaloupe. It makes my throat close up.
Pineapple, cherries and some apples.
I have this walnut allergy too! And same thing, I thought it happened to everyone until a year or so ago. They don’t seem to cause me a problem in baked goods, which means it might be a pollen allergy.
Haha yep I’ve got that same oral allergy to walnuts, too! I just figured out why my mouth hurts after eating walnuts a few years ago.
Quite the list here. I’m not allergic to walnut but I am allergic to mushrooms. The same thing my mouth goes weird, my stomach hurts, and simply cannot digest them. Great food for thought here. Atowle|https://formationvacations.com/
I actually wear their Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin in the Fall! It sounds ridiculous to wear, but when it’s on, it actually smells just warm and cozy and not like cinnamon potpourri!
And cooked spinach totally makes my mouth feel like it has this weird coating… but I think that one might happen to most people.
Omg!!!! This happens to me too and everyone thinks I am crazy when I talk about it. I never googled it because I too assumed it was normal, and am just hearing about “oral allergies” right now on this post. My mind is officially blown.
I used to have the same thing with walnuts – it kind of felt like my tongue was itchy too. Not fun. Now walnuts are ok, but no hazelnuts or macadamia nuts for me :(
Okay, I’ve had this walnut thing for many, many years! So I just substitute Pecans instead.
Also be careful of pine nuts from China, they are not the same as Italian ones and leave a tinny taste in your mouth for days!
Try baby spinach instead, I found the bigger leaves do the weird astringent eghhhhy thing to my mouth.
Because I’m actually only 14 in my heart LOL , I do still wear BBW lotion. I have a variety-mostly anything with the word ‘coconut’ in it and I did just by the Bonfire Bash which is basically the lotion version of the Marshmallow Fireside candle (#basic) that we love.
Weirdly for both me and my kiddo what is rational about scent and quality doesn’t apply. I have almost allergic reactions to real perfume. I feel like my skin is burning and the scent makes the skin around my nose & mouth feel like it’s on fire just smelling the scents. So I quit wearing real perfume. I didn’t wear anything for years. BBW doesn’t bother my skin or give me headaches. My kid has VERY sensitive skin and we tried Every. Single. Lotion. the dermatologist suggested for her- all the high end doctor approved things. Her skin kept getting worse and I was spending a ton trying to find something she could wear (she also has extremely dry skin). BBW lotion? she can wear it. no reaction. no burning. her skin is like butter now. Honestly, it’s embarrassing. I have no idea why a low end product works so well for both of us. But there it is. I quit fighting it and we just embraced it.
I feel awful for your walnut allergy. my daughter was allergic to peanuts and tree nuts from birth until kindergarten. any physical contact or ingesting. It wasn’t a good time for anyone. by the grace of God she grew out of it which is practically unheard of. But I’m always wary of her having too many nut products still.
I have been loving the aromatherapy scents, especially the eucalyptus and spearmint, and the happiness one. But I mostly go for the candles and hand sanitizer anymore :D
I have a decent memory and I don’t think I’m NOT sentimental/nostalgic but I always feel like things happened ages ago? I honestly have awful trouble telling time backwards, like short spans of time will seem very long and long spans of time will seem very short and I’m a complete jumble all the time, which I’ve always chalked up to my depression because everything seemed fairly orderly before that became an issue.
Me, too, with the walnuts! It really only happens with raw walnuts though, and especially when they are in a salad of some sort. I don’t have the same problem if they are baked into a bread or a cookie!
Coffee jelly is sooo good! I make it in glass coffee cups topped with Russian cream (https://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/russian-cream-24486) for a grown up jello dessert. When I went to Japan you could get chopped up coffee jelly in iced coffee, yum!
How is it possible to have a reasonable bedtime? I go to bed after midnight almost every single night. I read that article and my body legit laughed at me. Also, super psyched for This is Us. I have my candy and tissue box ready!!
I had noticed the same thing with my memory worse after having kids. I asked an older mom friend and she says “I call it Mom-nesia”!!! I think it is because moms are remembering everything for their kids care (including some for the hubs!) and themselves-the brain is full!
There’s a new Bath and Body Works candle out called Blackberry Tea Life, and it smells wonderfully fresh and minimal. Yeeeeaaars ago (like, back in 2004/2005), they used to have this Red Currant and Black Tea lotion scent, and my best friend and I were crazy over it because it wasn’t overpowering at all. When we heard it was going out of stock (like B&BW likes to do to my favorite scents — hello, Bergamot Mint), we stockpiled whatever we could. I still have a container of the lotion that I “save for special,” haha. ANYWAY — the blackberry tea life candle smells a lot like that Red Currant/Tea I used to love, so if they ever make a lotion in that scent, give it a try!!
I have the same thing, oral allergy syndrome. Which I think is the dumbest name btw. It always sound so made up when I tell people people I can’t do raw bananas (and a zillion other random fruits and veggies raw) but if they’re cooked it’s fine. If you google it you can find a handy chart that shows all the common pollens in the food that your allergic too, since it’s the pollen but not the food itself?? I always have to toast walnuts or my tongue hurts badly too and sometimes my lips get itchy bumps. I read that your body heat is enough kill off the pollen proteins which is why it’s not life threatening and why you usually only get reactions in your mouth and lips. Regardless, all I know is if I react to it, I can cook it to eat it. Onto a yummier topic- coffee jelly??? Ummmm NEED to find this and try it!! 😍
My coworker has what’s called geographic tongue. It gets raw with sores/slices in it when she eats pineapple, oranges, or any acidic fruit. She’s not a fan of spicy foods but apparently it might happen if she ate spicy foods. Sometimes we’ll watch her eat something just to see her tongue react. Must be reeeeaaaal slow at work those days.
I have the same thing with walnuts!! I also have the oral allergy reaction with pecans, kiwis, and strawberries. It’s so annoying!
Is the candle sale at BBW still going on? That’s when I love to stock up!
Mine is to walnuts also!! But when they’re cooked they don’t bother me!
I don’t know if you’re aware, but you have some truly gross & misleading anti Jennifer Wexton attack ads showing up on your blog.
