New favorite flavor alert! Smoked maple everything.
It is my current mission to make sure smoked maple desserts and recipes are being tested on the regular here. We’re starting with this smoked maple old fashioned and it is so perfect for the season. Smoky. Flavorful. And warming. Like warms you to the core.
And seriously good.
Two weeks ago I went to an event at DeLallo and they had this Knob Creek smoked maple bourbon whiskey. Oh my gosh.
I know that I’ve been rambling about my weird love of maple this year (I’ve been uninterested in it my entire life!) and the moment I saw this, I just about died. I tasted it that evening and then when I had to make a wine run for a party a week later, grabbed a bottle.
I.am.obsessed. YEP. I knew that the smoked maple old fashioned had to happen.
This is super smoky. Super maple-y. It’s really delicious and I know that I wanted to create some sort of fun cocktail with it!
We did our own little version of smoking a slice of lemon and orange rind in a glass before adding the bitters, maple syrup and smoked maple bourbon. It definitely upped the smoky flavor and made it so interestingly good. If you like bourbon and you also like smoky cocktails (think: mezcal!) then you will go crazy for this.
It packs a powerful punch. It’s totally worth it!
While I’m usually all about punches and sangrias (they are definitely the easiest for a crowd!), these really only take a few minutes to throw together. Especially if you have everything ready to go. They’d be great for a small Thanksgiving gathering – either before or after dinner.
The best part? If you’re a crazy fall fan like I am, and you wait the entire year for crunchy leaves and chilled air and bonfires and hayrides, this is right up your alley. It tastes like all those things right in a glass. LIVING for it.
Smoked Maple Old Fashioned
Ingredients
- 1 lemon rind spiral
- 1/2 ounce maple syrup
- 2 to 3 drops angostura bitters
- 2 to 3 ounces smoked maple bourbon whiskey
- cinnamon stick if desired
Instructions
- Use a kitchen torch to light the lemon or orange rind and place it in a glass, covering the top for a minute or two. Remove the rind, run it along the rim of the glass and add an ice cube.
- Add a few drops of bitters, then add the maple syrup. Add in the bourbon. Stir, add the cinnamon stick and serve.

I think I’ll make this for my husband! I don’t have smoked maple bourbon but I have a bottle of smoked maple syrup that I’ve been looking for ways to use.

Oh goodness, I want to make these SO badly for Thanksgiving. I have a bottle of digestive bitters…could I use those in place of the Angostura? The google wasn’t helful when I asked :/
Um, I just went on the Bourbon Trail in KY and the Knob Creek Smoked Maple was one of our favorites. This is well timed because I have a bottle sitting in my bar right now…

I just got a copy of Death & Company’s newest book: Cocktail Codex. You might like it. They classify EVERY drink as one of 6 templates – old fashioned, daiquiri, martini, etc. And then explain how variations work. It’s an interesting way to look at it and understand how cocktail recipes work (or when they don’t.)
Your pictures (and recipes) are always amazing. One suggestion: clear ice cubes: I got a kit from clear ice rocks, It is about $100 and is super easy to use.

One ounce of maple syrup? Please tell me to mean one teaspoon. One ounce of maple syrup is way too much. If you wanted it sweet 2 teaspoons would be adequate.
i used 2 teaspoons!!
