Straight From Mother Lovett’s Recipe Vault.
A recipe.
On a napkin.
These are usually the best kind. Even if the napkin is falling apart at the touch because it’s over 30 years old.
It’s never a productive day when I dig into her stash.

i love going through old recipes…when i was in oklahoma recently i was able to go through recipes that are over 30 years old too and it was pure heaven!
Love it! I recently went through my grandmother’s recipes as well and found a bunch scribbled on just scraps of paper along with dozens that were clipped out of newspapers and magazines. My favorite was finding a 10 cent coupon for Libby’s canned pumpkin from 1985! There was no expiration date listed, but I have a feeling that the store wouldn’t accept it.
Give it a try!! You can fight them saying there is no expiration. The companies are the ones that eat the cost not usually the stores. I have some ancient coupons too, one for caramello bars but I haven’t a clue the last time I saw one of those in the checkout aisle!
That’s amazing. Feel lucky you have such things to hold onto and cherish. I have empty composition books I keep meaning to write down recipes for my girls to have when I’m long gone… morbid thought and hubs teases me saying they won’t want paper but it’s not about the paper it’s about the fact that they’re hand written and will hopefully bring fond memories that way – right? :)
I love this! Recipe’s like that are few far and between!
it is amazing that you have all that! i keep trying to force my dad to give me his grandmother’s recipes…
This looks exactly like what my mom has from my father’s mother. And all those recipes start with “Add x tablespoons of butter to drippings from y slices of bacon.”
I’m serious. The woman added butter to creamed corn.
Old recipes are great. A couple of years ago my aunt made all the cousins scrapbooks with copies/originals of my (deceased) grandma’s recipes — many handwritten. Such a sweet idea, I thought.
Gorgeous, it’s funny, from reading the comments it seems like many of us have a similar experience when we go through mothers’ or grandmothers’ recipe boxes. I wonder what it will be like now that they’ve become some what antequated. Yes, I like to think that if I have kids they will enjoy finding my blog to see what I made at different parts of my life, but for those of us who don’t blog, saving them as bookmarks on a webpage doesn’t seem to have the same emotional power as something handwritten.
Though I do have to say I’m a bit puzzled, in an amused way. Why did you tag this as fitness. Bceause there was work involved organizing the vault? ;-)
Hahahah! Everything that is not a recipe goes under my Fit Bites page since it’s more “lifestyle.” I have been trying to change the name but can’t figure it out for the life of me! Any help would be appreciated! :)
This reminds me of my grandma’s recipes…they are so hard to read now!
I always get so envious when I see these kinds of things. My family doesn’t have any old family recipes. But I guess I could change that and start my own recipes to pass along. Looks like you’ve got quite a huge stash :)
It’s so wonderful that you have those.
That recipe calls for sour milk? Muy interesante. ;)
LOL! I know. I’m pretty sure that is buttermilk.
A quick Google and you’re right. Thanks Mother Lovett for some 4pm education.
My mom has so many thanksgiving recipes that are as old as I am (26 years). My favorite is her sausage stuffing.
I love looking through old things like that! I had recently found a whole drawer full of letters that my grandparents wrote to each other back when they were dating in the early 50s–so cute! Besides, you are totally being productive! I’m sure you’re planning on sharing some very yummy recipes with us in the near future! :D
That is so cute!
so flipping cool! you should try to preserve them so they can survive getting passed on over and over again =)
My mom has all of my grandma’s old recipes but I never saw her (grammy) cook a day in my life! lol
xoXOxo

I would be lost intros all day long…. and I WOULD call it productive ;)
intros=in those
so cool! we also have a stash of my grandmother’s recipes – also written on napkins, scraps of paper, etc.
You know it’s good when it’s written on a napkin. Seriously!
I love that! I am always writing down stuff on napkins or rand pieces of mail and stashing them away too!
That’s so cool. My grandmother never wrote anything down. She just “cooked” and “tasted”. Whenever I’d ask her how to make something she’d say, “a lil of this…” or “a lot of that…” Seriously, no jokes. That was her response. I’m attempted to re-create a lot of the dishes she made.
I believe it! That is what my grandma did with SO many dishes.
I love going through all my moms recipes. You know, the ones that actually arent hers at all, but my Grandmas. Theyre the best!
I just dug out my holiday biscotti recipe. I believe that paper has been burnt, fallen into the dish water, it has egg white hardened on it, and the edges are crinkling or ripped. I re-typed it today and sent it to my mom. Just to insure it lasts a few more Christmases. Happy Baking :)
This is so amazing – these are just perfectly preserved pieces of memories and stories. I’m jealous that you still have all of this stuff!
Napkin recipes are the BEST.
I love a good long-standing recipe!
you need to get that napkin into some kind of frame to preserve it. it would look darling hanging on the wall in a kitchen!
Those are beautiful pages, how wonderful to have them. Are you typing up some of the ones that are really fragile? Or scanning them? Or somehow trying to preserve them? Sorry-it’s the librarian and baker in me worrying. You just have such a treasure trove. And we do too because you share with us, thank you!
That is so cool! I love recipes passed down generations. My mom has a tiny little notebook where she wrote down recipes – I’ve been eyeing it.
When I go to heaven… I want a room next to ML.
I’m more concerned with the fact that she is using “sour milk” in a recipe than the fact that she wrote it on the napkin. Just sayin’.
it’s so awesome that you have those! i LOVE looking through recipe boxes
The very best recipes come from napkins or tissues.
My grandmother still keeps all of her little napkins and index card in a little box from the 50s. So adorable.
oh my gosh~~to see those items!!! those are such treasures that can never ever be replaced!!! they are worth more than money cold ever buy you!!!! treasure them forever~~~~
I think your are right!! The best recipes are the ones on napkins or old flashcards with food stains on them. Always to be saved and cherished.
I can not even express how envious I am of you right now! I want a pile of family history to go through!
I love this post. I recently found an entire box of my Mom’s handwritten recipes. She never measured anything, so I’ve been taking on one recipe at a time trying to figure them out. She’s been gone 16 years now, so finding this box after all this time, especially right before the holidays is a special and emotional treat. I’ve labled the box “The Holy Grail” and my family all over the country are waiting for me to decifer these recipes and make them into a family book…there are so many!
Thanks for sharing your post…these old memories are by far the best!
Have a wonderful Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
This is awesome! I have recipes like this from my grandmother as well! Those are always the best!
Old recipes are the best treasures – you are lucky to have those!
