Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread.
Word on the street is that I post quite a few recipes with peanut butter.
But this recipe is better. This recipe contains one of the best combinations known to man: chocolate, peanut butter and banana.
Only taking a close second to bacon and chocolate.
This is a banana bread to end all banana breads.
And it has whole wheat flour! And brown sugar. You know, the healthy kind of sugar? Since it’s brown? Kind of like brown bread. Or brown flour. Or brown brownies.
Just ignore me.
All I’m saying is that you can eat lots.
And as usual, make sure you cut super thick slices. Slices already have a set limit of calories. One slice fits all. Make it a big one.
Especially if the top is covered in raw turbinado sugar, because then it’s reallllly crunchy. I might have eaten just the top off of half the loaf because, well… I do things like that.
Love, love, love this bread. I was a little nervous using all whole wheat flour, but it made the bread perfectly dense and delicious. It’s not too sweet either. Which is highly unusual for me, so I apologize. Not sure what’s gotten into me this week, except for six replays of Now and Then, and an outrageous amount of bacon, sprinkles and whipped cream vodka.
Just kidding on that last one. Sort of.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread
makes one loaf
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4-5 large ripe bananas, mashed
2 cups whole wheat pastry flour [or all purpose flour]
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup peanut flour [99.9% sure this can be omitted if you don’t have it]
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup milk [I used vanilla almond milk, any kind will work]
1 cup chocolate chips
raw turbinado sugar for garnish
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking powder, cocoa, peanut flour, cinnamon and salt in a bowl and set aside.
Cream butter and peanut butter in the bowl of an electric mixer. Add sugars and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and vanilla, mixing until combined. Add bananas and mix. Add dry ingredients slowly, mixing until just combined. Stir in milk, adding more one tablespoon at a time if batter is not wet enough. Fold in chocolate chips.
Spray a loaf pan with non-stick spray and pour in batter. Cover the top with course sugar for garnish. Bake for 50 minutes, or until knife inserted comes out clean.
What can I say? I like some peanut butter with my peanut butter.

I think cheese and bacon is better than chocolate and bacon. Just sayin ;)
I think I just peed my pants with excitement. Raw turbinado sugar, crunchy crunchy goodness with peanut butter, banana, and chocolate? All you need to do is somehow get Jonas Armstrong in the picture and I’m set for life.
Hah, I never realized brown sugar was the healthy one, but you’ve convinced me!
I’m not a big fan of banana, but this looks good.
By the way, check out my latest post on my blog – it’s an Irish Cream Liqueur Cake….sorry, no peanut butter in it, but alcohol instead!
Fantastic recipe… because, like you said, chocolate + peanut butter + banana = best flavor combination ever! I have some peanut flour from Trader Joe’s that I’ve been meaning to use, and this bread sounds like the perfect recipe for it.
I like how you threw in that part about eating the top off. I do that with everything. Most people have never seen a baked good of mine with any kind of crumble or frosting…but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
looks great you just needed to add some chocolate chips! :)
Ah! I did, I just forget to put them in the recipe!
lol then i deem it pretty darn perfect! :)
I usually put chocolate chips in my banana bread, but peanut butter is a great idea!
Oh yum! I so need this as a midmorning snack today. Can you bring some to school for me? ;)
It makes me happy! I love that you post lots of PB recipes!
I love you.
I almost thought you were going to put bacon inside the bread – which, now that I’m thinking about it, might not be too bad.
I like the way you think with the brown sugar. And eating the tops off things is totally normal I say!
ahahaha “brown brownies”. I’m going to tell myself brownies are healthy next time I eat them. This bread is a combination of my favorite flavours. Delicious!
I want to make this..tonight..as soon as I get home from work! I can even tell you how it is without peanut flour because I haven’t found it yet.
Ohhhhh & that whipped cream vodka… Oh boy! I just discovered it over the holidays & it is soooooo good! Doesn’t even taste like I’m drinking alcohol, which could turn into a bad thing- haha! But it was so good with orange soda- creamsicle!! :)
Oh yes, saving this… and I am thinking that 2 slices per loaf would be appropriate.
I haven’t seen that movie in for-ev-er! It used to be one of my favorites too! I think I even bought the soundtrack :)
I think you should smother peanut butter on top like frosting-just for the effect, haha.
Chocolate, peanut butter, and banana…. best comibnation. I can’t wait to try this bread.

Looks amazing! I made a similar recipe, but with PB, I’d love to try your version with peanut flour :)
girl, that last shot is AMAZING! i think i’m in love with this bread already ;)
We totally enjoy that you put more peanut butter on the peanut butter bread. That’s why we like you so much.
Droooooooool! There is no such thing as too much peanut butter.
What’s wrong with peanut butter?!! The more the merrier! :)
I’ve ben trying to bake more bread since it’s a bit healthier and definitely tastier. This totally fits the requirements. I agree, chocolate and peanut butter are my favourite combination too.
This looks great – the flavor combo sounds fantastic
OOooooooh wow. I totally just bookmarked this recipe. The only thing that upsets me is that I don’t have a loaf of it already sitting in my kitchen.
I love that raw sugar sprinkled on the top– so pretty! You can post peanut butter recipes every single day, as far as I’m concerned :-)
Love this! I just made something similar a few nights ago:
http://www.jennalaughs.com/2011/01/peanut-butter-and-chocolate-snack-bars.html
I added wheat flour too, trying to make myself feel better about eating half a pan. The next day, I put one in the microwave so the chocolate chips would be all gooey again – I’m thinking that would be a good way to eat this banana bread!! Love your site, lady.
I always love your commentary – you had me smiling and laughing first thing… breakfast was barely over! Oh and I think Elvis would befriend you for life with this one.
Yes! I’ve made this before too — I brought it to a friend’s house and got some snarky comments: “I thought you were supposed to bring dessert… what is this, banana bread?” Then they tried a slice… and then they realized their mistake. It is dessert if you want it to be dessert… and you DO want it to. Um, if that makes sense.
Totally!
That last picture really got me.
Great idea using all whole wheat pastry flour. I’ve done the same, and sometimes use white whole wheat flour which is also lighter than regular whole wheat flour.
I love using them, I can never tell a difference!
eating the top of is definitely the best part of “quick breads”..this looks simply perfect…to me, a pb& banana sandwich on whole wheat bread is pretty much the perfect comfort food….but a pb& banana ON pb& banana would definitely be incredible :)
love,
cathy b.
Oh wow! This looks amazing! Thanks for posting the recipe! =D
Dare I say it? This might be a better option for breakfast than the gooey butter cake?!
Which means I better show my Mum so she’ll make it.
“And brown sugar. You know, the healthy kind of sugar? Since it’s brown? Kind of like brown bread. Or brown flour. Or brown brownies.” Haha! Love it!
I like a little peanut butter with my peanut butter to! And chocolate/pb/banana will ALWAYS be the best combo known to man! You totally made my mouth start watering with the crunchy sugar-coated top! :)
Oh heavens-that looks delicious!
All the bananas in the Pittsburgh area must have been getting ripe at the same time – this weekend I made banana bars with chocolate chips and a peanut butter drizzle. They were amazing!! (and only took 20 minutes to bake!)
Bananas+peanut butter is my all-time favorite flavor combination. Can’t get enough of it!
Man, I only have two overripe bananas in the house! I’ve got to tell my husband to stop eating them while they’re good. Because then they can turn into something even better…
And my husband is right there with you about thinking that brown sugar is healthier than white sugar. He was so confused when I showed him that brown sugar was really TWO kinds of sugar – white sugar and molasses! But I like your line of thinking. Brown = healthy!
Hahahah!
What a great combo! I adore good banana bread-will need to give this a try!
I posted a peanut butter recipe today too! Ya gotta love peanut butter! This looks delicious!
Looks amazing..Wonderful photos!
You know what’s awesome? PB&Co’s Dark Chocolate Dreams PB with banana. This bread looks like it could be an addiction for me.
I actually made this with White Chocolate Wonderful. So good.
Do you think it would work with crunchy peanut butter?
Yes, but you cream together the butter and peanut butter, so it may crush the chunks.
There can NEVER be too much peanut butter :)
There is nothing made with peanut butter that can be bad. I have a jar at home and a jar at work at all times, you know, in case of emergencies.
Anyway, question: If we omit the peanut flour do we just add an extra quarter cup of regular or whole wheat flour instead? Thanks!
Nope, I think it will be fine without it completely!
This sounds so good! I’m convinced that banana and peanut butter were meant for each other.
