June Favorites: Beauty.
You GUYS.
This month? I bought no new makeup. It is nuts.
I wish I could say it was intentional because you know, that would mean I am trying to be an adult and not spend superfluously, but ummm… no. I didn’t happen to realize it until I was listing out my favorites for the month, the things I’ve used constantly, and I was blown away. I guess that is good, right?
It’s probably due to a mixture of busy-ness, not leaving my house, only leaving my house for hot hot hot summer days and it just generally being summer. I figured I’d do things slightly different and show you EXACTLY what I put on my face in the summer if I am wearing makeup. I broke it up into two parts: the first half shows what I put on my face if I’m going somewhere like maybe lunch, an easy dinner, not totally dressing up or anything. The second part shows just the few things I add to that look if I am going somewhere and want to look presentable, but also want to wear makeup since I’m a beauty junkie.
Other than that, I haven’t worn a ton of makeup so far this summer, and I’m considering “this summer” since the beginning of june. If I am going to a beach or pool – I wear NO makeup. No tinted moisturizer, no waterproof mascara, nothing. Only sunscreen.
Here we go!
Okay. These are pretty much the only things I have been putting on my face, and this stuff STAYS puts. To refresh your memory, I have slightly dry, fairly normal but occasionally a little sensitive skin. And there is a reason why my dry skin isn’t a giant issue: it’s because I sweat like a mother… yeah. No. You don’t understand. It is bad. I don’t sweat a lot on my body per se, but it freaking POURS from my head and down my face, even if I am sitting outside in the heat and not working out. Looks like I just took a shower. Thanks for those genes, dad. This is why I have talked about my hatred for being in the heat so much on this blog. Because it’s a FREAKING NIGHTMARE. If you think you sweat a lot? Just come near me. My husband has been horrified. Needless to say… I can’t wear a lot of makeup on my face in the summer. This is also why my dream weather is 60 degrees and why I have no desire to live very south.
Every morning, no matter what, I am still using the josie maran moisturizer. Still obsessed. Have been using it everyday and still have so much left. It is just perfect. On days when I’m not wearing makeup, this is all I use in the morning. Is it being discontinued? A few of you keep telling me that and I’m devastated. Either way, I have the $32 bottle and it is going to last forever.
If I decide to wear a little makeup, I’m still sticking with the dr. jart bb cream. It is working wonderfully for me in the heat – you may remember that it wasn’t my favorite when I bought it last year, but when I got slightly tanner last month, it was the darkest color I had. So it works.
After that, I use the MAC pro longwear concealer (in NC15) under my eyes. I tend to only use this in the summer because in the winter, it can make my dry skin under my eyes look cakey. However, it is the only concealer that will really stay on in this heat. Love it. Will also last you forever – I’ve had that since last summer and you can see how much is still left.
I still really love the MAC radiant rose pen that I’ve mentioned the last few months – I am using it fairly consistently – but using it alone is not enough when I’m sweating like a hog. Oomph.
So that’s what goes on my face. I’ve been continuing to use my too faced milk chocolate soleil as a little bronzer/blush. Again – only doing this if I am going somewhere – not even doing this if I am just sitting in my house.
Oh and I wanted to show you this tarte brush because I picked it up at Ulta a few months ago and good lord – it’s incredible. I’ve been using it nonstop. I love that it’s short and fat too.
Continuing with that super easy makeup – I only do these steps. A few months ago I decided to try the nars eye primer. Yes, I’ve been so loyal to the urban decay primer for years, but of course – always looking for the next best thing? Yes. I will say that this is just as great as urban decay – even through over 12 hours of sweating in 90 degree heat at the kenny chesney concert last weekend, my eye shadow did not crease at all. (However, keep in mind: dry skin. That may be why.) As much as I love it, I loathe the packaging as it’s so wasteful and difficult to get the product out. But it works.
After the primer, I use some of the MAC paint pot in painterly. It’s a matte nude shade – no shimmer at all. Again, something that lasts me foreverrrrr. You may be able to see that it’s beginning to pull away from the sides and drying up and I’ve barely made a dent in it, despite using it for a long time. It’s the perfect color.
I do my two favorite mascaras… pretty sure I’ve discussed them every month.
Then yes, like I mentioned last month, and like you all warned me, I am now officially obsessed with filling in my brows just a tiny bit (they are super dark after all) and feel incomplete and like a freak without them.
These are the lip colors I’ve been going nuts over all month and of course, so many repeats. I know. Boring.
Still hooked on revlon kissable balm stain in cherish, NYX butter gloss in eclair, MAC candy yum yum and MAC snob.
And that’s it. Truly the only makeup I’ve been wearing on my face 98% of the time.
Now if I want to add just a leeeetle bit more…
I’ve been alternating between the three products above. I have not strayed from these at all in June. If I want a slightly more-makeup look, I’ve been using either the WOS and naked colors in the urban decay naked basics palette, the MAC tan pigment (another product I can really only wear in the summer – way too pale for it in the winter) or the light bronze and champagne colors from the lorac pro palette. Nothing else.
And I don’t mix them ever – I only wear one of the above. I usually also add on the single false lashes in the corners – like just two tiny clumps. And the above mascara.
When using those bronzy colors, I’ve been adding these two eyeliners to my bottom lashline for a little pop of color since I am eternally 13 years old. They are the same ones I mentioned last month – asphyxia and freak – and they are perfect for my green eyes. LOVE THEM.
The tarte eye brightener is one of my favorite products. I’ve been hesitant to mention it because I thought it was discontinued… but I guess not. It’s double ended – one side is golden shimmer and one side is pink shimmer. I use it on the inner corners and that’s it.
If I want to add a little blush, I’ve been hooked on my tarte exposed blush. Ugh. This is probably my favorite blush of all time. So gorgeous.
Now that is really it. I have not worn any other product on my face this entire month, aside from other lip colors. Insane, right? Very rare for me who is a smoky eye fan – especially a smoky eye with lots of color. I’m sure I will do a big smoky eye soon… just really haven’t had anywhere THAT important to go all month that wasn’t 90 degrees. WAHHHH can I whine anymore?
On to sunscreen!
First up, this cucumber coola sunscreen. Errrr. I love this stuff. I mean, really love. I got a sample of it in that box that shall not be named, but begins with a B and ends with an irch. I was hooked. The only problem is that it is pricey and I need to order it online. I also like a bit of a higher SPF. Because I’ve decided that if I can’t look like Bar Rafaeli (uh, I’d need to grow like 2 feet) I want my skin to be as wrinkle free as possible. Anyhoo. I love this. I hope it never runs out ever.
My other longtime fave is the neutrogena sport face in SPF 70 because this stuff can handle my sweating. So if I’m wearing it during a workout outside, I’m pretty good. Got a handle on things. What sunscreen stuff are you loving?
Okay I sort of lied. I think I did actually purchase this ONE item in June – it may have been at the end of May but I can’t remember. It’s not something I can put on my face though… and it will last a few years (probably?) so I am justifying it. This color club holographic nail polish in harp on it – the prettiest purple ever. Also a discovery from that box mentioned above.
This is pretty huge because you know I am a slave to all neon polishes in summer. But I’m loving the change up.
Alright. Finally. I can’t even believe this.
I am severely HOOKED on this entire hair line. Not surprising since I’ve talked about it every month. I cannot tell you the last time I was ever so loyal to a hair care line in my life. It’s because I never have been. Yes, I’ve used the loreal professional absolut shampoo and conditioner for over 5 years, but I also used a bunch of other products in addition. This? I’m sold. I love EVERYTHING about it. Every product. You can see I bought the big tub of conditioner that in winter, swore I’d never buy. Oh well. This flawless stuff is fairly new – I’ve used it four times so far (usually once per week) in between washes and don’t quite understand it but love what it does to my hair. I never thought I’d use the healing oil, but put it on my ends. hjghfgkjhg@&#$)/!!?jkdhsfksheuwnfew!!
I can’t even say enough good things. If you are not used to buying salon products, you will find this line to be pricey. For me, it’s a little less than what I spent on the loreal. And I can get it at Target and Ulta!
No more words.
K. All done. Could I be any more wordy? Probably not.
Let me know what you’re loving this month.
p.s. not affiliated with any of these companies, just love all the stuff. all purchased by me. (much to my bank account’s dismay.)

I keep hearing about dry shampoo (Batiste brand) and I’m dying to try it. If it works, it might be a summer miracle product! As for my staple this month? Chap stick. I’m so laid back in the summer!
Batiste, love it! I use it on “day two” (the day after I shampoo) and it works wonders! It’s pretty much amazing, and if I need a little extra something I will even use it on day one! There are so many flavors and scents though, but I’d say my fave for my strawberry blonde hair would have to be the light blue striped can. That spray is a bit white, but i like how it makes my hair look blonder, they even have spray for brunettes, and some are just clear. ;) You can use it before you style or after, and it makes the hair look clean and fresh, trust me! It’s a definite, must have, be sure to try it!
You sold me! I’m going to get some today! :)
i adore batiste! you can also get travel size cans and they are perfect for summer trips.
I wish I knew how to do makeup all fun and stuff. My makeup looks the same whether i’m running errands or going to a wedding – I’m boooring!
Love that Color Club and that Macadamia hair product line!
I’m loving the Balm’s Nude’tude palette. I’m guilty of using that every day along with their Betty Lou-manizer and In stain blushes – they last all day!!
I have kind of sensitive, olive-toned skin so I use a lot of bronze colors on my eyes and nudes/deep pinks on my lips. I love the Revlon lip butter in Creme Brule and just picked up e.l.f.’s jumbo lip gloss stick in Summer Nights and am obsessed with it (and for only $2 at Target, my bank account is obsessed too).
Oh and Zoya polish in Julie! It’s a pretty lavender with some shimmer in it. Great for summer and in between using neon shades :)
i love zoya polishes. i think they are my favorite brand.
Don’t worry – Josie Maran moisturizer isn’t being discontinued! They’re just reformulating so it has a higher SPF. Someone asked this question on Facebook and they responded, saying that. Thank God because it’s my favorite.
thank you!
Wow, pretty sure we have identical beauty faves! Painterly Paint Pot, Snob Lipstick, Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, Voluminous Carbon Black mascara, Pro Longwear concealer, Kissable Balm Stain in Cherish, are some of my ALL TIME favorites, just to name a few. Tarte’s Exposed is currently at the top of my wish list.
OPI “You’re such a Budapest” and Living Proof Full. I swear I can go 4 days between washes after using Living Proof.
I definitely owe you a thank you for posting about the Macadamia hair mask packets before. I’ve bought like 20 of those little packets by this point, I should probably just get the tub too.
do it! the packets have been lifesavers when i’ve been traveling though.
Love everything about this list! I’m addicted to lip gloss so I was surprised at how much I liked the lip stain. Definitely want to try the macadamia hair line now. I think I saw it at Target last week. Seriously thank you for sharing your favorites! You’ve helped me discover some awesome products
love the bits of humour you inject into your posts! x
ATA|AllThingsAnita – please take a minute to give me some feedback on my blog! xx
I love the Tarte eye brightener too! I got it in a set last year and still have a bunch left. I’m so intrigued by the Flawless stuff! I just ordered some :) Can’t waitttt to try it.
Great products, breakdown, info and totally feels like you’re in my living room (or bathroom vanity area) giving me the rundown. Great conversational writing :)
And thanks for the (re)-reminder about that hair line. I have to pick up some new stuff and I am going to check it out!
Oh, I looooooove the Macadamia healing oil. I got a small sample bottle months ago, and it lasts forever. It makes my hair spectacularly soft without weighing it down, which is hugely impressive as I’ve got thin and fine hair.
Ahh, I’m crazy about these posts! I’m trying to be better to my skin and look more grownup with my makeup. Your posts are my go-to resource for trying new stuff. Just wondering–I’ve been using Simple brand moisturizer on my face and it’s been great, but I tested out a Tarte BB at Sephora last week and it was amaaazing!! Do you know of any brands that are a little easier on my wallet?
i agree, i love ALL things simple!
are you looking for moisturizer or bb cream or both? i have semi dry skin, so i still use a moisturizer under my bb creams. i am really picky about my moisturizers (i want it to feel a certain way on my skin!) and have tried olay – didn’t 100% love it but it’s probably the drugstore brand i would use next to simple. however, the way i see it – those good drugstore moisturizers can still be close to $20. the josie maran one i mentioned above was $32 and it is seriously lasting me a looooong time.
as for bb creams, i tried every drugstore brand and didn’t like any. i, however, am a huge high maintenance pain in the ass. my main problem is that my skin is very pale. i’ve seen a lot of people like the garnier one?? again though, i really think when it comes to skin (moisturizer/bb cream) i’d rather spend a little. then buy drugstore blush/eye/lip products.
I’m intrigued with the products in this hair line…I might have to stop by my local Ulta and take a peek. Great post! :)
xx
Why don’t you want to mention birchbox? I love mine and got the same sample.
i’ve been soooo disappointed in my birchbox all year! i mentioned it in my last few beauty posts which is why i describe it like that here. i just don’t think it’s for me. even after managing my settings, i just never feel like i get anything *worth it.*
You should do Ipsy (if you don’t already). I have a Birchbox subscription and an Ipsy subscription and Ipsy is by far the better of the two! Love it!
MAC painterly is my jam. I love that stuff. Also, the Lorac pro palette is my fave.
I bought UD 24/7 liners in Stash and Sabbath. Sabbath is a matte navy and I LOVE it with the light bronze or gold from the Lorac palette. I also got tarte blush in feisty and of course, love it too.
i LOVE sabbath!! seriously amazing. again, why aren’t you my neighbor.
MAC Candy Yum Yum is my favorite lipstick.
I’m thinking about dying my hair red and seriously the scariest part is finding a new filler for my eyebrows. What if they don’t match?!
I am a blonde for real but have dyed my hair red for a few years. The best eyebrow pencil I have ever found as a redhead is the Wet and Wild LIPLINER in Brandywine. It’s perfect- not too red, not purple, not too brown. It comes out on my brows as a lovely shade of dark auburn. Plus it is 97 cents at the grocery store, which is awesome.
They have a variety of shades in the lipliner, depending in what red you end up going with, but it is seriously the best little trick I have found for my makeup. When you have red hair and blonde eyebrows, people aren’t sure what’s wrong with you but they are pretty sure something is!
This was such a fun and info loaded post for me! Thank you, it was much needed!
As a makeup junkie myself, this post is one of my faves. I’ve talked about my own makeup routine on my blog a bunch too – you can never have enough!

I love the Rodan + Fields facial peptide powder . It helps rebuild collagen while also giving glowing skin.! I have gotten many compliments since I started using it! I love it!! Your beauty post is my favorite!!
http://www.winonacostello.myrandf.com to order..
Love the nail polish and snob lipstick!
Such a great post! Love all your favorites!
Helllooooo. So I rush to Target as soon as I rolled it out this morning so I could get the Macadamia Flawless! woo hoo! ….and they’re out. O.U.T. out. Next time – email me privately BEFORE you blog about cool stuff. easy solution to my instant gratification needs. ;)
:)
just a heads up – while my target carries most of the macadamia products, i can only find the flawless at ulta! if you have one near you, try there.
Walgreen’s Drugstore carries the whole line!
Hi there! Love your blog…so much. Quick question…I hope you haven’t already answered this question and I didn’t find it. How do you remove your eye makeup? I’ve been using Falsies Waterproof mascara and by the next morning it’s severely clumped and crumbly and gets in my eyes, making me MAD!! I hate that oily remover, but it may be the lesser of two evils :/ What do you think?
hi shawna! i never wear waterproof mascara – however i accidentally bought waterproof falsies once and didn’t realize it – omg, it would not come off for the life of me. anyway, i use simple eye wipes or mac makeup wipes to remove it!
oh i should add – i use the wipes for my regular eye makeup. the day i accidentally used the waterproof falsies, i HAD to use the oil based cleanser. nothing else would get rid of it.
Thank you! Btw, my family loves you! I make your recipes all the time…of course, they only know you as “the girl whose food blog I love.” Their fave right now is the crockpot chicken cheesesteaks (is that what you call them?) They’re amazing!
I LOVE your beauty faves posts, just love, love them! :)
I went right out yesterday and bought the Macadamia shampoo, conditioning rinse and treatment oil. CVS didn’t have the flawless. I am so excited to try it, as I have been on a mad hunt for some new shampoo to help my hair in this humidity and summer heat. Thank you, thank you!
also…I am going to Sephora this week to check out the tarte blush and brush, as well as the Makeup Forever hd powder. Thank you!
i can only find the flawless at my ulta – just a heads up! not sure if the other stores carry the entire line. :)
I love getting ideas from reading your favorites. Or, maybe, I should hate it. I never really cared about beauty stuff much before but the past several months I have gone a little crazy. Due, in part, to the box that shall not be named. Speaking of…I, too, fell in love with the Coola. I actually bought it from Amazon, where it was $10 less! So, you’re saving, thus you can buy something else! I bought it in matte, though, which I don’t love as much as the sample but, truthfully, stays on a lot better and you use a lot less.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE AMAZON HEADS UP RE: COOLA.
idk why i didn’t think to look there!
Amazing post! I seriously look forward to your monthly favorites post every month! I have been loving the Revlon lip butter in raspberry pie, this gorgeous reddish pink color that is soo pigmented I can just dab it on my already naturally dark lips and be good to go! And since I am also naturally very pale, it reallys helps to add some color back in it haha. I highly recommend it :) I have also really been loving the Lush I Love Juicy shampoo, it is perfect for my greasy hair and has this amazing fruity smell, and the Lush American Cream conditioner for my ends that is light but still very moisturizing and smells like a strawberry vanilla milkshake (insert happy dance)!
I struggle a lot with blush and bronzer for my pale skin, what would you recommend?
I am in love w/ your site. I love simple things. The Coola products I/ve been using for years! I know it’s pricey but totally worth it. One pump is all you need. I had the same problem with Falsies… Have you tried Blinc Mascara? It’s amaze it washes off with just water and it makes your lashes look so good people will think they are fake :)
Love the Alba Bontanica Hawaiian Face wipes! Pineapple enzyme 3 in 1.
Also, Mac Plushglass lipgloss in Oversexed. It looks dark purple but goes on sheerer.

I’ve recently started filling in my brows as well after seeing some tutorials and before/afters on maskcara.com… it’s so hard though because I’m blonde!
I love all of Neutrogena’s sunscreen lines. They actually have some spray sunscreen that I LOVE. It is SO light you can’t even tell you’re wearing it!
Pingback: Tuesday Things.
I have been contemplating the Macadamia hair products forever! If you had to pick a favorite between the healing oil or the conditioner, which would it be? thanks!
Okay these are my monthly beauty faves:
Ipsy GlamBag subscription: http://www.ipsy.com/?refer=u-hfyqlojtwj5f34h It’s ten dollars a month for 4-5 full size or deluxe sample size beauty products. Amazing. This month one of the products I’m getting is a tube of Coola sunscreen, and I can’t wait to try it!! I also got a 1.3 oz bottle of the Macadamia Oil as one of my items a few months ago, which retails for 13.75 at my local target.
Julep Maven subscription: http://www.julep.com/rewardsref/index/refer/id/184696/ Each month, a different theme. you get to choose between four different boxes for 20 dollars a month. If you don’t like any of the offerings that month, you can skip it without being charged.
I love ipsy a lot because it gives me a chance to try tons of new products that I never would have tried before, and the value and quality of the products I get each month far outweighs the ten dollars I pay for it!!
Pingback: Mango Cardamom and Sweet Coconut Popsicles
i’m currently obsessed with zoya’s rory polish- pink w/ metallic sparkles!! the tarte blush is on my list to try!
So, so obsessed with the Macadamia Oil Treatment. I just moved to where the humidity is even worse than my home town, and my hair just could not handle it. Like I would use products to counteract the frizz, and I would walk my dog and have to straighten it again. This weekend I went back to the Macadamia Oil Treatment and my hair looked flawless. No restraightening it. No frizz – even though I didn’t even blowdry my hair. Obsessed. And now I feel so enlightened by you because I had NO idea I could get it at Target or Ulta. I thought I would be stuck ordering it from Birchbox. THANK YOU!!
Hi Jessica!
Do you use the Macadamia Conditioning Rinse, along with the shampoo as your daily conditioner? Or, do you just use the deep conditioner?
I am loving the Tarte blush, thank you SO much for the recommendation! :)
I don’t use the rinse, just the deep conditioner. I don’t wash my hair every day and I’d say I use the deep conditioner about 2 times per week. I am still using up my loreal professional series conditioner so I will use that too if I wash every day.
Oh, great, thank you! I got the conditioning rinse, but I’m not incredibly impressed with it, but I only got a small packet of the deep conditioner. I might have to get the big container, it seems great. Thanks!
i had also bought a travel size of the rinse, maybe last year? and didn’t really love it. however i don’t think it was because of the brand – i think it’s because i never really like rinses, you know? my hair is way too long and thick for that – i need something thicker and more moisturizing.
Great point! I will definitely try the mask!
A little late posting on this one but I just discovered “Healthy Sexy Hair Soy-Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner” mentioned in this blog post: http://thebeautydepartment.com/2013/06/apres-swim-hair/
It made my hair so nice and soft! I also use a variety of oils on my ends because I have really dry hair, so this spray + oil = smooth, shiny hairs! Not sure if you’re already aware of this product or have blogged about it in the past, but it’s a new fave of mine!
PS – Love your blog so much! :)

One of the finest of write-ups there is on the internet today. Kudos to the author for being so well informed. I must give it to their presence of mind and the selection of words. This couldn’t have been written in a much beautiful way. Keep it up. Good on you.
