October Favorites: Beauty.
I caaaaan’t believe it’s October! Insert typical time-is-flying comment here.
This last month I still had a bunch of traveling to do so I didn’t change up my makeup a ton from day to day – I pretty much had my bag packed and this is everything I was using allllll month. I’m excited to be home for the most part now and that I can switch up colors more often and wear dark and crazy fall shades.
Most of the things I was using last month have stayed in my routine, with the exception of swapping out an eyeshadow palette. I’m at the very tail end of my jo malone ginger biscuit cologne (which was limited edition – WAH!). I am still loving the batiste plumping powder and it’s been completely awesome since I’ve actually had to “do my hair” like everyday.
I was a bit sidetracked here and forgot to include nail polish, but I am still crazy over essie for the twill of it. I’m all over classics like essie wicked and OPI lincoln park after dark – basically the darker the better. Does anyone remember OPI black tie optional? UGH, I loved that shade. I really want to get this pretty sephora formula x shade in the next few weeks for the holiday season. Other than that, let’s talk makeup!
Okay, so I have a story about this caudalie toner. I’ve been wanting to try it for probably close to two years… and it’s never carried in my actual Sephora stores and it’s pretty much always out of stock online. The “moisturizing” factor is the exact reason I have wanted it since my skin is dry. Soooo… over the last two years I’ve used the Michael Todd cranberry toner with exfoliating cotton pads and have really loved it. I like to use it at night before applying moisturizer but after cleansing to remove any extra dirt on my face. Sometimes I’ll also use it in the morning instead of washing my face (apparently this is Salma Hayek’s skin secret?!) depending on what I’m doing that day.
I’ve been doing the exact same with this and I am in LOVE with it. It’s so pricey but so gentle and wonderful. Neither of the toners have alcohol so they aren’t drying. I just freaking love this one. I’m hoping it stays in stock (the above is almost empty but I bought a second) but if not, I’ll still use the Michael Todd one.
Pointless story over.
I’ve talked for ages about how much I love the Olay sensitive skin wipes. I don’t use facial wipes everyday, or even super often at the moment especially since I haven’t been able to go to hot yoga. But while I was traveling I grabbed this mini pack of ole henrickson brightening clothes in the checkout line (how terrible (wonderful) is that Sephora check out line?!) annnnnd I love ’em. I don’t necessarily use them to remove makeup (I use coconut oil, MAC cleanse off oil or josie maran oil for that) but they were awesome when I needed to refresh a little bit on or after long plane rides this past month.
Plus, they smell like heaven.
At the beginning of the month, my skin got RIDICULOUSLY dry on my face. I didn’t change anything, I wasn’t using anything new, but I was on planes everyday and in dry hotel rooms and I’m thinking that coupled with the constantly different weather I was in contributed. I still love the andalou naturals cream I talked about last month but even THAT wasn’t enough for me.
This first aid beauty repair cream is just a little thing, I got it with my points while checking out at Sephora, but it has been a LIFESAVER. I used it at night and then in the morning I would mix it with my andalou naturals SPF cream. Within a day or two my face was feeling so much better and the dry flakiness was gone. I’ve since got another sample with points and have worked through it, so I guess I should just get the bigtime one?
I think it’s the first product I’ve used from this line and now I am hooooked.
The next three things may seem slightly boring because I mention them ALL THE TIME but it’s a true testament to how much I love them. Remember my obsession with benefit high beam last year? I took a little break from it in the summer because it was almost too light/white-ish for my skin with bronzer and self tanner. But now that I’m as pale as a ghost again, it’s back. The mini sample size lasted me nearly a year, so I bucked up and bought the full size, which is what you see above. I feel like it will last for ten years. It is huge! There is so much product.
My favorite things to do with this are mix a little with my tarte tinted moisturizer, put some on my cheekbones and some right underneath my eyebrows or above my lips. When I ran out of this I had heart palpitations. That’s how much I love it.
I’m also still flipping out over the hourglass ambient lighting powder in luminous light. I know, I know – I’ve raved it about it for months, but it’s pricey and I want you to know how much I think it’s worth it! Keep in mind that I am super pale, so if you have darker skin you might need a different shade. This just gives me the perfect glow. When people say that BS like “oh you’re glowing from this pregnancy!” I’m like uhhhhh no. I just have a really great highlighter.
It’s subtle enough that I can use it combined with the high beam above. It’s also made it’s what into my barely-any-makeup routine, which usually just consists of eyebrows, mascara and concealer. Now I brush this on my cheekbones too!
Another oldie but goodie – and actually this one is like brand BRAND new because my other brand new one shattered into 32,487 pieces on a New Hampshire hotel bathroom floor – but I gotta mention it. The main reason I wanted to talk about tarte exposed blush (AGAIN) is not only because it’s a staple I adore, but because you guys keep asking what kind of blush I wear with dark lipsticks. This is it!
It’s super natural and almost like… skin?
I know. I’ve ranted enough about it.
Now. I feel bad talking about this lorac mega pro palette because I don’t think it’s available anymore? But in the case that they do make more for the holiday season, I have to talk about it. I only have the original lorac pro palette and it’s one of, if not my absolute, favorites. When I travel, I take it everywhere.
I didn’t get lorac pro 2 because I really don’t need it. Heck, it’s not like I need this either but I am so glad I grabbed it. The story is kind of funny because the only reason I ended up being able to purchase it is due to my lack of sleep. I was in Seattle and woke up around 3AM local time since I was still on EST and since I can’t sleep to save my life. What else do you do in the middle of the night besides scan the internet? I somehow was in the right place at the right time and was able to buy it on amazon. FREAKING OUT.
It is the only palette I’ve used since. You can obviously see which colors I’ve really gravitated to but I think all of them are fab. I’m just super excited about it. I love lorac shadows almost as much as urban decay.
Lip things! I photographed these on a super bright and sunny day and I didn’t really want to brighten the photographs at all because it takes away from the true colors. The red lipstick still looks slightly brighter than it is, but… it IS bright. What we have here from top, clockwise: MAC rebel – you’ve seen me write about it forever. Perfect fall shade. Next is the MAC rhianna lipglass (was this limited edition?), one I’ve also talked about before but a shade I really like over the red lipstick. Next is the too faced melted lipstick in melted berry. It’s GORG. I’ll tell you more in a sec.
The final shade is MAC relentlessy red, which I’ve also mentioned before but just really love. It’s almost a cross between bright pink and red and it’s totally matte. It also stains the crap out of your lips, which I sort of like. The next day, my lips are often still stained. It’s the color I’m wearing here.
This melted berry shade is to die for. I wanted something slightly different than rebel (it can pull really dark on me at times when I use it with MAC nightmoth liner) but in the same family. Not only is this stuff comfortable and moisturizing to wear, it’s matte and completely stunning. I want every shade in this line.
Soooo tell me what you’re loving in this fabulous season! What’s your go-to dark lipstick? I want allllll the deets.
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are a few amazon affiliate links above. thank you for being here!}

Bought that new holiday Viva Glam classics palette and it’s been giving me life for like two weeks. i love that they simplified a way to carry around a bunch of basically- neutrals. Best is still VG I, btw.
I finally bought high beam about a month ago since you recommended it awhile ago and LOVE it. It’s crazy how much it brightens up my face. Thanks for the recommendation! My favorites for fall lipsticks right now are MAC Spice It Up (it’s one of the lustre ones and its a pretty deep sparkly red), MAC Hot Gossip, kinda on the pinky summery side but darker and more purpley, MAC Viva Glam which is so gorgeous and a really deep brick red almost with brown undertones, perfect for the holidays (I wear it with their brick lip liner) and Urban Decay Jilted. I was actually wearing it when I met you at the book tour in Baltimore! Its like a deep sparkly magenta. I’m super intrigued by the Too Faced melted berry lipstick..I’m gonna have to try it!
Oh and I forgot I bought the Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon..it’s like a blue red. I haven’t worn it out yet just tried it at home..it’s s super pretty color and the application takes some getting used to, but I think I’m gonna like it a lot.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE icon!! it’s one of my favorite shades. i have the liquid lipstick version too. it’s awesome!!
A little late but… For the next time you’re tan, try the benefit sunbeam! It’s the same thing as high beam except in a pretty golden shade.
Trying the Jane iredale line for glow time BB cream. Kind of thick but once you learn how to apply and use of her cosmetic sponge – awesome and lasts and really covers/evens out the tone. Also Laura Geller blush n brighten in raspberry. Baked clay products. Beautiful finish.
We love so many of the same products! My skin is super dry and in the fall/winter I love Mario Badescu Caviar night cream. It’s super thick and almost paste like, but I wake up with super soft skin. Even the FAB Ultra Repair cream isn’t enough for me sometimes. I use that for day or I just got a sample of a Shiseido cream from Sephora… Amazing! Totally want to try those Melted lipsticks. That berry shade is to die for.
Looove the entire First Aid Beauty line! The Ultra Repair Cream is my favorite too but the Face Cleanser is another good one, so gentle and cleanses well!

I’m so so SO jealous of your Megapro palette! I’ve been dyyiiiiinnngg for it. I’m eyeing the IT Comestics Holiday palette as a replacement.
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE first aid beauty. I have extremely dry/sensitive skin and this stuff works wonders. And you can buy a HUGE tub of that deep moisturizer for like $30! WHAT.
Also, LOVE the melted lip from too faced. that stuff is PHENOM.
I’m glad to see some of my faves on your list :D
Great products! I like everything from the Ole Henriksen Brightening line, it all works so well and smells so great!
I’m going to have to put MAC Rebel on my to get list and I’m going to have to try those Olay Sensitive Skin Wipes. My skin has also been dryer than usual on my face. I am attributing it to the weather getting colder. My go to fall lip color would have to be Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Shameless.
I am a Caudalie junkie. The Vino Perfect Radiance serum really makes my hyper-pigmentation less noticeable. The products are a bit pricey, but worth it to me because of the effect they have on my skin. If you order directly from the Caudalie website, you can get hard to find find products (like the megasize Cleansing Water), and shipping is free.
Echoing the above comment. I have been using Caudalie for years and am obsessed. Totally worth the money. The S.O.S. Serum has been a huge skin-saver during the blustery Boston winters. I also order directly from the website. Their customer service is also top notch. Highly recommend.
That tarte blush just made it’s way onto my wish list. I bought the Lorac eyeshadow sampler for my daughter last Christmas and she absolutely LOVES it!
Love Lincoln Park after dark and after midnight! Black tie optional was awesome and I miss Mrs O’leary’s bbq as well! I am a nail polish junkie!!
I’m SUCH a makeup fan! I can seriously never get enough of it, my hubby is so excited (not) that I just took his credit card and said I NEED THESE NEW MAKE UP ITEMS THIS SECOND!!! lol, off to purchase and try a bunch of new stuff. Love the first aid beauty line…they have this little under eye roller that has antioxidants and helps with dark circles, I swear it actually works!
I used to love High Beam! And Kitten too – you know, the glitter powder puff from Benefit? Right now I am loving the fact that I learned Dior products have removed parabens which means I can purchase their new Star foundation and eye concealer! Great products and even better without those preservatives…And I am loving some stuff from Dermatologica which I received from the Fitness mag Meet and Tweet. All sorts of good stuff from them and again, no parabens.
i didn’t know dior removed parabens! that is awesome news.
Love all of this! I grabbed a Revlon Moisture Stain in Parisian Passion the other day and it is a surprising new favorite for me. I like a glossy lip and this does that AND gives intense color. It stays on for hours on end and I can wake up the next day with my lips still stained (not glossy though). Another new favorite is NYX Roll On Eye Shimmer in Walnut. I could have sworn you’ve had this in your beauty favorites before but I could be imagining things. It is SO glittery and stays like that ALL day. I always have problems with glittery eye shadows creasing and the glitter getting all over my face throughout the day, but this does not do that! Anyway, super quick to roll on, I love it.
i haven’t bought one of the NYX roll on eye shimmers but i ALWAYS look at them!! maybe i’ll bite the bullet.
I feel like we are make-up soul sisters! Love that Tarte blush. And I am DYING for all of the Too Faced Melted lipsticks. Peony is my favorite!
But as a fellow super-dry skin girl, let me tell you that FAB ultra repair cream is the BEST! I bought the big tub– $28 and it lasted me an entire year, so I consider that worth it.
I’m so glad to read a positive review on the Melted lipsticks. I have been DYING to try them, but I’m not a huge lip gloss person and was worried they’d be too much like gloss. But if they’re more matte, I bet I would love it. Time to spend my Sephora gift card!
I picked up some of the Urban Decay on the Edge palettes and got some great shades that are brighter and not part of the Naked palettes. Great colors!
I LOVE your blog and cookbook, but I am absolutely addicted to these beauty posts! Thank you so much for sharing! It gives me new ideas and new brands or products to investigate.
I love First Aid Beauty and use their face wash (the regular, not the red clay) everyday, the Radiance Pads (cut them in half to get twice as many and use on the bikini line or bumps on my arms), and the Daily Face Lotion. The repair cream is my emergency use product and they sell a huge tub of it that I’ll never get through.
And I’ve been loving the Urban Decay lipsticks, since the color lasts so long. My latest is Venom, a lovely berry-plum shade. Also love the Bite lipsticks, you would LOVE the Palomino and the Violet ones (sooooo awesomely bright and fun!) I’m excited to hear the Melted lipsticks work well, since I’ve been eyeballing them for a few months.
I need to try the face wipes you mentioned. I’ve been lookin for some good ones. Great items :)

I am very pale too, based on your recommendation, I got the hourglass ambient lighting powder in luminous light, and I love it! Yesterday I also got a Tarte lipstick in Watermelon, and I love the color, its like a pinkish red, very nice. I’ve been looking for a bold nice red lipstick, I am not sure if you wear red, but if you have any recommendations, please share. I am looking for a deep rich red, not fire red or burgundy, something very classic.
try hourglass icon! it comes in a gloss, lipstick and liquid lipstick (i think) – you can try them all at sephora!
OMG, I love makeup stuff! Have you seen the Naked Vault! It just released yesterday. I’m so drooling over that right now!
i did!! it’s SO insane. i love it but i have the eye palettes already so i don’t think i need it!
Hi,
Love to read your recommendations.
What exfoliating cotton pad do you use wih the toner?
i just use the ones from target or ulta! they are in the same packaging as regular cotton pads, only difference is they say “exfoliating.”
I live for the ole henrickson brightening clothes when I am traveling. Great find!
always love the posts, but can’t believe you didn’t mention what you’ll get with your sephora vib 20% discount in a few days!!
gahhhhh I KNOW! i will probably get a few staples (like anastasia brow gel, tarte chocolate soleil bronzer) but honestly i’m not planning on picking up too much because i have some bigger (baby related, haha) expenses coming!
I ::almost:: bought the Mega Pro palette, but I figured between Too Faced Chocolate Bar, Naked 1, & Pro Palette 2, I shouldn’t get anything else. :-P
I do agree with you on the Too Faced Melted lipstick love. My fall color is Melted Fig, and I just ADORE it. It’s a great formula, and the colors are stunning.
I wish I got the mega pro palette!! It’s so pretty! I also have the melted berry it’s stunning!!
Thank you for sharing and for repeating yourself! When you bring up the same product across multiple months I know it’s one of those awesome products that isn’t all hype the first couple of times but then gets relinquished to the back of the drawer. It means more when it has staying power!!
I got the First Aid moisturizer and under eye cream in the Summer and love them! MAC Rebel was new to me this Fall and it stains my lips as well, which is kind of fun the next day. It is out of my comfort zone, but I’m digging it. My friend just gave me her new Melted lipstick in Peony b/c she didn’t like the texture. I freaking love it and want to get more and more. Definitely want to check out the shade you have.
Um so I just (FINALLY) bought Urban Decay’s Electric Pallete and I’m completelyyyyy obsessed. The neons are so gorgeous. I’ve been late to work all week because I’m actually taking the time to put them on. It’s a problem… that I love to have. Sigh.
I might be way behind the times on this (probably) but have you seen/used jamberry nail wraps? I was just cruising their website and saw a neon-ish sprinkle nail wrap and immediately thought of you. ~just the invisible Internet friend things~
