Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies – from scratch!
This cookie has been a long time coming.
You may remember that last year I baked some red velvet cookies, but used a boxed mix. Those cookies are delicious, but it was my mission to find a recipe for red velvet cookies from scratch. And the kicker? I wanted the cookies to be chewy. The only other red velvet cookie recipes from scratch that I’ve tried have been cakey cookies – which are delicious in their own sense, but I wanted a dense, chewy cookie.
After many attempts (read: massive fails) at the cookies over the last 10 months, I gave it another go this weekend and came up with something delectable.
And by delectable, I mean I ate 3 cookies straight off the pan and scorched my tongue. It’s okay… it was all in the name of cookies.
Even though red velvet is technically just rich chocolate, there is something fun and exciting about eating it. Dare I say the cookies taste better then regular cookies? I may be in my twenties, but I’m really just 5 years old.
Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies
makes 12-15 cookies
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon red food coloring
1/2 cup chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 375.
Cream butter and sugars together until fluffy in the bowl of an electric mixer. Add egg and vanilla and combine until smooth. Beat in red food coloring. Stir in cocoa, flour, baking soda and salt until just combined, scraping down the sides when needed. Fold in chocolate chips.
Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out 1-2 tablespoons of dough and set on baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
After eating a few cookies, I got a little delirious and did something wild.
Red velvet sandwich cookies stuffed with pumpkin spice cream cheese frosting. Best decision ever.

oh. my. gosh.
This honestly blew my mind – I love red velvet cupcakes!
that must be the most perfect cookie sandwich. i must make these!!!
Um… drool?
Now that my oven is fixed, these WILL be made :)
Wild and genius! Red velvet and pumpkin!? Amazing amazing amazing.
AaaaaaHA! I was perusing through your recipe page the other day (it’s a hobby/habit/vice of mine. I think the word “butter” looks weird to me now, as does the word “bacon”. :D) and I wanted to make these but I’m not a fan of boxed mix. It’s quite expensive where I am, and even though I’m called “Martha Stewart” at school when I say I make things from scratch (true story) I still like doing things from scratch. Besides, when you make brownies from mix, you don’t HAVE any butter! You use vegetable oil! HORROR OF HORRORS.
These are great – I have never made red velvet from scratch before – I’ve heard horror stories about the mess it makes, though!
Red Velvet is my favorite cake (well, tied with carrot cake). These look fantastic!
okayyyy now I havent even had breakfast and I want these ASAP!!!!! I love the pumpkin cream cheese frosting in the middle!
this may sound like a dumb question-but I havent ever had red velvet anything…does it taste different than ‘normal’ cake or cookie batter?? or is it just red because of the coloring?? (sorry if thats really stupid!)
Not dumb at all! It is really just chocolate/devils food dyed red.
I never knew that! I feel like my entire red velvet existence has been a sham.
I made these last night . They looked and felt great. Put an ice cream size on the sheet and place in oven but they never did anything . They stayed round and looked like a cookie ball lol. Should I have pressed them down or did I miss something? they still taste great anyway.
TY
My understanding, from my bff who is obsessed w/ Red Velvet anything, is that red velvet is a lightly-chocolate-flavored dessert…just enough cocoa powder to give a hint of chocolate! And it usually has a little tang to it from buttermilk and/or vinegar :)
The BFF is correct. A true red velvet cake has only about a tablespoon of cocoa powder but also has buttermilk AND white vinegar which gives it a different flavor than just a chocolate cake died red. We have tried to come up with a red velvet cookie that mirrors the cake flavor but have not got it down yet. Almost every recipe out there just adds red coloring to a standard recipe.
That has been my problem also, I want a red velvet cookie that actually tastes like a good red velvet cake. I’ve been working on a recipe now for a while, so I’m still looking myself. If anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them.
You held out till that last photo to bring us that pumpkin frosting. Nice. These cookies would be fun for Christmas cookie parties too – that festive red color. I can only imagine how yummy they are :)
Oh my word. I must admit, the first picture I saw was the stack, and my first thought was “mmm, cream cheese icing in the middle would make them better” and you were one step ahead. Awesome. Adding to the “to cook” list.
You’re amazing.
Yum yum yum! These should be my breakfast!

Those are like woopie pies but taken to the next level :-)
That is a sandwich I can get behind. I want it, now!!! :-)
What a creative idea, Jessica! I love red velvet cake, but have never had it in cookie form! Yet another, “why didn’t I think of that?” moment! I love the cookie sandwich, too!
i just got kind of sad because i didn’t have a cookie in front of me when i read this! :)
Beautiful! I love red velvet, but my kids are weirded out by it. It seems strange they don’t like it, kids should love crazy colors! Oh well, their loss.
the cookies look great, but pumpkin spice cream cheese frosting?? a big bucket of that on it’s own would be enough to make me eternally happy! :)
Wow. It’s only Tuesday, but I can honestly say this is going to be my favorite blog post of the week. I’m not a fan of “cakey” cookies at all–I love ’em chewy and gooey. And I don’t think the frosting you made is optional…it’s a requirement!
Hol-y YUMMM. Now, you’re just showing off! ;)
Red velvet whoopie pies? Brilliant!!
I want these. Asap. YUM!
You had me at red velvet!
In all seriousness… its super hard to find a good ‘from scratch’ red velvet recipe! I’ve been trying for ages! I’m excited to try yours :)
A chewy red velvet cookie. Wow!! You’re the best :)
My favorite cupcake and cookie combined!
Making them. Can’t wait. I have a blogger friend who LOVES red velvet. She will be thrilled to get some of these babies
Definitely going to have to make those as sandwich cookies! I mean…taking two cookies and making it one cookie? Genius! :)
Oh my goodness these look fantastic! I’ve never heard of red velvet cookies. I can’t wait to try these out!
Mm if those are chewy cookies I need to try them asap! I don’t like chocolate, but I love red velvet because they’re red–guess I’m a 5 yr old too ;)
How does one come up with recipes? I just find other people’s stuff (like THIS COOKIE which I WILL be making), and go to town with it. I guess i’m just lazy. or not creative. whatevs.
Anyways, these cookies look fab, and that pumpkin frosting makes it just that much more gangster. :)
MMM! We loved the boxed version, I have a feeling that we’ll love these more! Red velvet is Dave’s favorite so I think I’ll make these for him this week :)
Red velvet is my favorite kind of cake and I would have never thought to turn them into a cookie. Love the idea! Must try ASAP!!!
Ohhhhhhh – these look incredible!!!
These look DELISH!!! Can you share the pumpkin spice cream cheese frosting recipe that you used? There seems to be quite the variations if you Google search it.
I used what was left over from this recipe: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2010/10/03/a-healthier-pumpkin-cupcake/
But I’ll be honest – I never follow a recipe and make it different each time!
Thanks so much! Can’t wait to make these with the kiddos! It will be a great afternoon project!!!
Whoa! You just totally took it over the edge with that frosting Jessica. I’m sure they’re delicious.
These look divine!
Red velvet and cream cheese really should be bigger than pb & J. They’re that good.
Wow! Looks yummy!
Oh my. These will be the first things I make when I unpack my kitchen.
Mmmm! I haven’t tried anything from the red velvet phenomenon yet – these will be the first!
Seriously, I don’t know how you come up with this stuff. You make my sweet tooth rage every morning about 7:30am. I want one of those red velvet cookie sandwiches so dang badly. I’m afraid nothing I brought will even taste good now that I have these on my mind. Thanks for that. ;-)
These are gorgeous! The color is perfect!
How dense am I that I didn’t know that red velvet meant chocolate? I seriously thought that it was a flavor all on it’s own. I am now embarrased.
Brilliant! How come I’ve never heard of red velvet cookies before?! My life is now complete. :)
Those look perfect! I adore chewy cookies more than life itself! Thanks for this one ;)

It looks like a red velvet whoopie pie, and to me, it doesn’t get much better than that! Genius!
Oh Jessica. I love you for this. They look sooo good!!
Brilliant…nuff said.
