Homemade French Bread Pizzas.
I have an obsession with these whole grain baguettes. I find myself buying a few of them every week; they are about the size of my forearm and just so perfectly fresh and delicious. Even when Mr. How Sweet peeked into the fridge this week and saw 3 baguettes, he looked at me excitedly and said,”Yes! You make the best things with that bread.”
But the truth is, I haven’t been making anything “cool” with this bread for the last few weeks. I have been making these homemade french bread pizzas over and over again, because they are so delicious and the flavor possibilities are endless. And to Mr. How Sweet, having french bread pizza a few nights a week is really cool.
And let’s be honest… creamy cheese melted until it bubbles and browns on crusty, fluffy bread is always cool. Even if there are some ugly veggies underneath.
Not to mention that these can be thrown together in a matter of minutes. I think that I could make Mr. How Sweet a different one every night of the week and he’d be a happy camper. He’d even be thrilled with the same one, night after night.
Growing up, my mom would make us Stouffer’s french bread pizzas in a pinch. They were quick and easy, and I’m sure she still hoards some stocks a few in her freezer. But these are so much better – instead of the bread being dry and crumbly, it’s fresh and toasted to perfection so you get a crunch on the outside and a soft, fresh bite on the inside. It is an enticing change from regular old pizza. Plus, you have control over which toppings to add, and you can even add lots of vegetables. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing.
Homemade French Bread Pizza
Ingredients
- 1 large or 2 small whole grain french bread loaves
- cheese of your choice
toppings of you choice; may I suggest:
- Simple White Pizza
- Easy Buffalo Chicken Pizza
- BBQ Chicken Pizza
- Chicken Bacon and Spinach
- Roasted Veggie and Goat Cheese
- For Mr. How Sweet’s meat lovers pizza, I used pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, asiago cheese, parmesan cheese, pepperoni and sausage crumbles.
- For my pizza, I brushed the baguette with olive oil, loaded it with garlic, then added mozzarella, asiago and parmesan cheeses, and finally topped with tomato slices.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350. Slice baguettes in half, lay on baking sheet, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes so bread can get crispy. Remove bread, add toppings, and place back in the oven for 10 minutes. Broil for 1 minute to get cheese brown and bubbly.

It’s been so long since I’ve made french bread pizza. Thanks for the reminder :) I love how versatile the pizzas can be depending on what you top it with.
mmm those look SO good…do you cook the sausage crumbles before putting them on the pizza?
I actually found these Jimmy Dean sausage crumbles in the store a few weeks ago: http://jimmydean.com/products/FullyCookedCrumbles/
I have not tried them because I really dislike sausage, but my husband seems to love them!
What an easy dinner, idea – I think even my 2 yr old would love these! Thanks!
Yum! That looks delicious. I do something similar like this but I use pita bread.
Yes, yes I DO want a bite. I don’t know why I’ve never thought of that before.
French bread pizzas were a favorite go-to meal of mine in college – it doesn’t really get much easier and much more delicious. Thanks for reminding me!
Love this idea! I have to try it. Thanks!
I was obsessed with Red Baron french bread pizzas growing up. This recipe looks even better! I definitely need to whip some up and drift down memory lane :)
I’ve been craving this for ages!
My mom used to make us little pizzas like this all the time. Of course, I dont think she ever used french bread. It was always some kind of cheap alternative. Sill good though! :)
Seriously… why have I never made homemade french bread pizza before?! Thanks for the inspiration :).
hell yeah! This is going on my weekend menu. Pizza is the essence of life anyways.
Honestly I think the simplicity of bread pizza is what makes it so good…and really how could you ever get bored? The goat cheese and veggie sounds good. I love pizza with bosc pear, gorgonzola cheese and toasted walnuts….
Drool. I love fruit and gorgonzola.
omg those pizza bites look tooooo cute!
and the info about a rice cooker and you telling me your experience…thank you :)

O M G! Your french bread looks amazing! My husband would be drolling and sending me to the store if he saw those pictures..his 2 favorite things in the world: Bread and cheese, lol.
i like pizza! bread pizza delious????
Jessica… that looks so amazing! And what awesome recipes for the bread… you rock!
I am always surprised when people discover French bread pizzas. I grew up with “pizza” on whatever we had in the house: bagels, tortilla chips, toast, French bread, what-have-you.
Now that I’m pretending to be a grown-up, French bread pizza’s a staple in our house! I highly recommend spinach and feta, and throwing an egg on top (it’ll cook through by the time the bread is hot and the cheese is melted).
They also make great snacks when surprise guests stop in. :)
it’s only 9:30 on Sunday morning, but I could easily chow down on one of those delicious french bread pizzas…right now! Looks wonderful!
yummmm, Looks amazing
Oh how we loved Stouffer’s french bread pizzas growing up. Yum. I made your version last night and my husband and kids LOVED them. Thanks!!
Glad you liked them!

I made this last night with your Easy Buffalo Chicken recipe, and it was a hit. For the second time actually. My boyfriend does not like to try new foods. He’s a meat and potato kind of guy. So the fact that he like pizza….and chicken…and buffalo sauce….and buffalo chicken (and buffalo chicken pizza, for that matter) does not prevent him from making that panicky face about trying buffalo chicken french bread pizza (very similar to his reaction the first time someone ordered buffalo chicken pizza in front of him). He’s also a man of few words when it comes to food. I’ll ask him how something is, and he replies, “Good!” and continues eating. Meanwhile I’m analyzing my use of cheese, and going on about what I didn’t do correctly/would do differently next time. So the first time I made these, that was how it went. However, when I announced yesterday that I was making them again, he responded, “Cool! I liked those last time.” I was rather taken aback by his enthusiasm. While we were eating, he said, unprompted, “This is good!” (he then spaced out as I analyzed what I did right this time as opposed to last time). And as he was finishing up, he said, unprompted, “Seriously, this was really good. I’m impressed!” I think that was the most glowing review I’ve ever heard him give food. Thanks for the recipe!

My mom made pizzas with english muffins for parties when I was a kid. But they were alwasy soggy. I think prebaking the bread is the secret here and then adding sauce and toppings. I love any kind of pizza and this looks so easy yet delicious. You can be healthy or sinful depending on the mood of the day. Also the picture of the french bread pizza cut into bites suggests this would be a great party appetizer. Thanks for your tips. I am adding your website on my “favorites”.
