Dark Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Soda Floats.
Want to know something super embarrassing?
I live for school supplies.
No, really… I live for this time of year. I walk in Target and want to lock myself inside a la Joey + Pacey style. I go bananas over sparkly notebooks and journals and mechanical pencils and multicolored erasers and folders with unicorns on them and then wonder why Lisa Frank didn’t design a line for people in their 20s. At least a line that was substantially less embarrassing and obnoxious. And I mean obnoxious in the most fantastic way.
Even thought I was totally the kid that has massive anxiety the night before school started – probably to the point that I should have been medicated… and probably to the point that my parents wish THEY could have been medicated – the weeks leading up to it were some of my favorite of the year. I didn’t even mind coming home from our yearly summer vacation in August – the sure signal that summer was over – because it meant that it was time to get paper and pens.
My mom once said to me, “giving you a pencil and paper is like giving a serial killer a gun.” Morbid but true. I am THEE doodler. I doodle on everything. I destroy leftover envelopes and pieces of mail. I used to cover my paper-bag wrapped text books in bubble letters and hearts and squiggly lines. Now that most of my life is taken care of electronically, I cover things like bills and magazines in geometric designs while I talk on the phone and do incredibly important things like watch DVRed episodes of The Hills. You may think that YOU can doodle, but I assure you that I can outdoodle most people. I’m all up for a doodle challenge.
So as I was like, pouring bourbon over dark chocolate ice cream in a glass inside a dining room which is inside a house that I live in with my husband, I was just thinking that this is… weird. When did I get so old? Why am I old enough to drink bourbon for dessert and not purchase a new 6-pack of neon highlighters in August? I don’t know if I like this… except that I love it.
A few months ago I shared this float that I had for lunch. Yes lunch. We love some spiked floats in this house. Well, I enjoy them… my husband is NUTS over them. Adores them. They are like one of his favorite things. And one awesome thing about not having to go back to school in September? I can still have bourbon floats for lunch. Things are looking up, even if they aren’t covered in glitter pen.

Yummy – I bet the bourbon gives this a real nice kick too! Gotta love the chocolate cherry combination too. Perfect weekend food. :-)
I can’t think of a better way to start Friday than with an alcoholic float. Yum!
Oh my goodness, I think we may have been somehow related in a previous life. I LIVE for school supplies, and as a kid they were a bajillion times more exciting to me than back to school clothes. My mum would take my sister and I school supply shopping at Staples, and she would say that just upon entering the building, she could see me starting to vibrate with excitement. I don’t think I’m quite as giddy about these things as an adult (yes, I feel old too.. turning 24 this month.. whaaaaattt!??!) but I’ll admit that walking into the supply room at work still makes me a little weak at the knees. ;)
Hahaha great Pacey/Joey reference :D I’m getting ready for back-to-school (grad school) and need to get some school supplies. Love this time of year.
GREAT floats!
What a great drink to have at the end of the week, who am I kidding? A great float to have anytime! I love the flavor of cherry and dark chocolate. I love this!!!! Have a great weekend!!
haha! This cracked me up. As I personally DREAD the school supplies in the stores. I love summer. I love having my kids home (not to the point that I could homeschool though, that’s too much work). I love hanging out at the pool, the zoo, Kings Island, EVERY DAY.
Then I see the school supplies and I know my summer is over. Time to make menus, and *gasp* REAL DINNER, help with homework (yuck, I didn’t even like it when I was a kid, let alone now, I can’t begin to tell you how hard high school math is), drive to sports.
Oh, and those school supplies at only 15cents add up. Because of course the teachers don’t want the cheap stuff…
Okay, my rant is over. Thanks for letting me vent (as if you had a choice)!!
Can you stop by with one of these drinks? I think it would help!
It looks like gelato in the first picture. Is that what I should use when I make this? I need to get some black cherry soda and give this a try.
You can use ice cream, gelato, froyo… whatever you’d like!
These look awesome. Any specific cherry soda? Going to try and make these for a party this weekend. Ive made some of your other recipes, keep em coming lol. Cheers!
I used IBC, but that’s the only brand my store carried! I’m sure there are some better ones out there.
This post made me laugh out loud! I love the chocolate cherry combo in this float. Oh- and of course the bourbon, too! ;-)
oh wow. you’ve made me crave ice-cream at 10pm on a Friday night. luckily I’m already in my pjs or I would head to my local ice-cream store. times like these, I wish I kept ice-cream in the freezer. although, I thoroughly enjoy the flirtation I currently have going with my ice-cream guy so I’m not likely to find any ice-cream in my freezer anytime soon.
I seriously like the look of this Jessica. however, bourbon, that I’m not sure I can get behind. I’ll take the virgin version!!!
Having a 9 year and a 6 year old lets me relive that excitement all. over. again. There’s just something about the SMELL of them! It’s…intoxicating! :-)
I am the same way. I used to pack and repack my bookbag and set my clothes out for that first day at least a week in advance. To this day, I want to borrow a kid and take him/her school supply shopping. Something about an empty notebook and a new pen…ah, it kills me. And great Dawson Creek reference – that was a good episode! Happy Friday!
I am so going to have one of these later. Then go school supply shopping. LOL! This looks fantastic. :)
What a wonderful take on a childhood classic! School supplies excite me for some reason, too.
School supplies….YES! YES! YES! Best thing ever!
I AGREE… I live vicariously through my kids! Ps. I want one of these floats STAT. Have a great weekend!
I literally sighed when I saw the title of this post.
& gawddddd I miss The Hills.
Oh my God – I was just talking to my best friend about a love for back to school — I live for school supplies too. I’m secretly sad that at age 26 it’s no longer acceptable to buy a bright purple backpack and sparkly folders. What a boring world.
…. BUT this drink makes it a lot less boring. Happy weekend!
mmmm…school supplies! you’re a woman after my own heart! I’m a doodler too, I’ve been known to doodle on my arms or even legs when on the phone and all my paper scraps are hidden. it’s a weird sickness.
ps, booze floats for-eva…doodle that in your lisa frank note book!
Hello, Friday! I need some of this at exactly 5:00 today. Deliver? Thanks.
Ummmmm I will take 5 of these…of course I will slurp them down while writing recipes in my back and white composition notebook, watching repeats of Laguna Beach season 1, 2, and 3 on MTV, and thinking why, oh why, katie holmes did you ever marry Tom Cruise? Happy Friday!
I miss back to school shopping! I miss having a traperkeeper, mine were always covered in doodles but then crossed them out because I thought they sucked. and every time I had a crush on a boy I always did the I <3 _ _ _ _, on the off chance that the boy would see and guess it was him and we would live happily ever after. I promise I was in elementary school when I did this, ok fine maybe middle school…
I wish my other half like ice cream floats! It would give me far more excuses for delicious ones like this! I work in a college so I’m forever being reminded of how far removed I am from school supply age!
On Wednesday my 12yo daughter took me into OfficeMax (just to look???? ) and proceeded to fill a basket with all of the things she wanted for 7th grade and with great detailed explanations of what each item did. So after an hour later and trying out all of the desks and chairs with my 6yo .
Then I told Molly that Nanny was taking her out Friday for her school shopping and everything had to go back……..so we don’t talk about how awful I am ,your mean mom ,you don’t like me .
Now I need a Dark Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Soda Floats, two please.
Ohhh my gosh. School supplies are probably the NUMBER ONE thing I miss about being a teacher. I so wish I was kidding…but I’ll take a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils over flours ANY day. Or this float.
That is THE MOST gorgeous color!! Can’t wait to try these!
Um, hopefully that’s not too embarrassing because I’m the same way. I will forever get excited about the Target school section that pops up at the end of summer. In school or not.
I love school supplies, too!!!! I could have a field day at Target back in the day. Probably still could! New crayons, all perfect. Love that. And love this float! Cherry soda – haven’t had that in about 20 years!
Ohhh Lisa Frank. I was also a fan of that one guy that did all the dolphin peachies… what was his name? I’d probably still order full wall size artwork of his stuff. Do you think they take personal commissions? Hmmm.
And agreed – eve nfi we don’t get neon highlighters every year anymore – at least we get bourbon at lunchtime. This is still winning.
A doodle challenge?? You are ridiculous in the best way possible. As is this float. Hand it over.
School supplies are my FAVOURITE thing to buy. Well, aside from nail polish. But I digress.
When I was little and I’d go shopping with my mom, I would always slip away to the pen/pencil/post it aisle in the store. And then she wouldn’t be able to find me and would have me page’d over the store’s PA system.
And I was like MOM, I’m always always always always in the pen and pencil aisle!
I had a mini freak-out this year that when I’m done with my last 2 years of undergrad and then grad school…I couldn’t buy school supplies anymore! But then my boyfriend reminded me he’s going to be a teacher. So I can buy them for the rest of my life :D
Hahaha… love it.
You are my favorite person ever.
It was a tie between you and Lisa (yes, Lisa Frank and I are on a first name basis), but you just edged her out with alcohol. FOR LUNCH.
God I love this comment.
I was totally the same way about the start of the school year. I always loved the feel of a new notebook, and a new calendar, and new dividers…ooh!! That’s probably why I was a teacher for five years. This is my first year not teaching, and I’m itching to go get school supplies – it feels really weird not getting ready for the school year! I’m inventing reasons to go out and buy dividers and three-ring binders!
Love the Dawson’s Creek reference!! That’s my favorite episode :D I used to love school supply shopping, too. My favorite part was getting pens/pencils. I could spend forever in the pen/pencil aisle!
my stomach just growled at me. it’s past 5AM, does that count? it’s Friday? hmmm.
Jason and I both NERD OUT over pens and journals… all year round. we always end up in that area of the store… and there are too many pens in our house ;)
I LOVED getting school supplies–best part was organizing binders with all the fancy tabs. I would always try to write the most impeccable notes on the first few days of school…only to have them get messy soon after.
Was it just my school or were Pentel RSVP & Uni-Ball pens the most special/”popular” pens to have??
Oh yeah, def remember Uni-Ball pens!
SOOOOO not embarrassing to me! except Nate totally rolls his eyes and walks away when i start looking through new backpacks (hello, totally don’t need one since I’M NOT IN SCHOOL) and talking about how great the storage compartments are. oops…
Talente is the Devil.
#lisafrankfolife.
Omg. omg… ooommggg… ♥ ♥ ♥
I think I need to make this sooner than never. And that’s my favorite brand of gelato at this moment – if you make something out of their Sea Salt Caramel, I’ll forever be yours.
And why do you live so far from me, and eat at crazy places in P.burg?! That BRGR looks PHENOMINAL! I mean, it’s only six hours away… maybe make it a day trip… har har har.
I don’t drink but if I ever start, this will be my first.
Your loyal readers can only assume that after you wrote this post, you immediately went to the store and cleared out the school supply section :)
Wow, this is way serious…I’m trying this…um, this weekend. I need to get thee to a liquor store STAT.
Oh my gawwwwwd, school supplies! I am obsessed. Trying to explain to someone why I need a new notebook because the 47 that I have lost their appeal once 2 or 3 of the pages were written on = not easy. Then I obviously need a new pen just to write in that notebook ONLY. And it HAS to be purple. Don’t even get me started on the post-it notes….
If you have a Dollar Tree near you, check out the folders they have this year! They’re cute, thick, clear ones with pink & purple designs on them. I got somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 yesterday. I graduated college in 2003, so obviously these are all necessary.
OMG I love the post it notes too… gah!
Will def check out Dollar Tree. From one obsessed person to another.
You’re right. This totally makes up for yesterday.
You’ve got to post one of your doodled masterpieces! I was also the kiddo who lived for her new school supplies… actually reading my text books… that’s another story.
So this is kinda unrelated, except the link to BRGR. I’ll be in Pittsburgh next week and wondering what the best eating places are? Have you ever made a list? I haven’t been there since I graduated from CMU 8 years ago so I’m sure things have changed…
I’ve never made a list, I know I should… what are some of your fave cuisines? We love BRGR but just when we’re craving burgers and fries. We do love their sister restaurant, Spoon: http://www.spoonpgh.com/. Also love Habitat: http://habitatrestaurant.com/. The best tacos are in Shadyside: http://chicalocataco.com/. My cousin loves this place for Italian: http://emiliaromagnapgh.com/home/.
Let me know if you want any other suggestions! :)
Awesome, thanks for the reply! Not looking for any particular cuisine, just whatever is good. Or if there’s anything particular to the city. Quick question – any really good lunch/deli places?
P.S. I made a float last night with cream soda. Then I died.
Ok so I’m going to have to make one of these. What kind of Bourbon do you use? How about like a Maker’s Mark or Knob Creek? A-OK?
I used Maker’s Mark!
Can I get this in an IV drip? Wait, then I probably couldn’t taste it. Well, how about one of those Camelback things? So I can just walk around slurping…
Oh YES. So much yes.
That second pictures seriously makes me want some ice cream!! These floats look amazing.
I think these floats are definitely a rival for glitter pens. just about. yay for being old enough to enjoy both!
