It looks delicious. I love your photos :)
Bacon AND chocolate?! You must be in heaven!!! Looks awesome… heading over to check it out now!
How could you have posted this without an Austin Powers reference? I’m so disappointed! ;)
Aside from that, this looks like an awesomely brilliant side dish.
I’m a vegetarian so I would never eat this, but I felt compelled to comment because this is one of the most excessive, gross-looking items I’ve ever seen you post. I’ve liked some of your other recipes, but this just looks like a messy bodily movement.what happened to the basic stuff you used to do? Please post stuff that is actually edible again so I can keep reading.
Michael… this actually IS a basic recipe – I’m not sure if you clicked on to the recipe but it is an authentic mexican dish made with multiple spices and often semi or bitter sweet chocolate. Mole is very popular and has been around for ages. Given my major freakouts for Mexican food – which I talk about all the time – it totally fits with everything else I put on this site, and the “messiness” of it is due mostly to the tomato paste in the recipe. It’s not just some disgusting creation I made up to combine bacon and chocolate – it’s actually a real thing. And by no means is it excessive – mole is usually MADE with chocolate. It is what it is. Nothing has happened to the stuff I “used to do” – I still post the exact same way and the exact same things that I always have.
I appreciate the response but I think you missed my point. Obviously, I know what mole is. I live in Los Angeles and Mexican food is a staple. I’m talking more about how contrived some of the flavors in your recipes have become recently – like the peaches with blue cheese, rosemary, and brown sugar you posted recently. Like that one, this recipe starts off goodnight good but takes a serious turn for the worse. There’s something to say for simplicity.
I see your point and respectfully disagree. Different strokes for different folks. Thanks for reading though!
I have to laugh at this because I’ve made those rosemary peaches twice already for company and both times people lost their shit because they were so good. That being said I appreciate that you leave criticism and discussion up in the comments like this and respectfully respond. If Michael doesn’t like it, he has a right to say so (thought I think he could have worded it a little nicer which is why everyone’s panties are twisted). I agree different strokes for different folks!
i’d love to know what’s so “excessive” about this recipe?? it’s basically rice, broth and spices, with a small amount of chocolate and bacon for the mole. you may say its not photogenic or doesn’t sound good to you, but by no means is this an “excessive” recipe. it’s a grain!
we made it has night with pork tacos and it was awesome, very flavorful and hearty.
I usually don’t like when too many flavors are combined in a recipe, and I’m not sure I would like this rice (but I’ve never tried chocolate +bacon before, so who knows?). But the peaches… OMG, they were delicious! The best thing I’had in a long time. Maybe I’ll feel the same about the rice, maybe not. But I tried many new recipes since i’ve started reading your blog, and some are just awesome, so thank you !
What a pretentious SoCal d-bag. Nauseating.
Your creativity in the kitchen amazes me! This looks like a fabulous side dish to any mexican meal. And with chocolate and bacon, how could you go wrong? ;)
Jessica — thank you for the variety of interesting and delicious foods you blog about. I’m a little appalled at the audacity (& rudeness) of a previous reader/commenter, since this is YOUR blog! I don’t like every single food you post about either, but that is the beauty of a blog like yours. You have introduced me to so many foods that I would never have tried in the past, and it is great to learn more about the world around us. If we all ate/cooked the same way and lived the same way this world would be a very boring place indeed. I love how real you are as you just talk about life and cooking and eating. :) I don’t even know you, but it has been fun “getting to know you” via your cooking and blog. Keep it up! You are an inspiration to many!!!
Dawn – my comment is neither audacious nor rude. When you host a blog, you are welcoming the world to appreciate your content and to criticize it as well. I don’t agree with commenting merely to preach about how great something is. I obviously will throw in my support for items I love, but I think it’s fair to disagree if something isn’t your taste as well. If you don’t like the criticism, don’t read the comments.
Michael — I concur; when one puts things out on a blog, they are subject to others opinions. However, the language/implications we use in criticism should always be respectful. And that is where my main issue lies. Nevertheless, it’s good to hear that you also voice support for things you enjoy.
oh. btw…I have a brother Michael. This “disagreement” is making me smile, as I think back to many, many years of sibling rivalry. So- thank you ;)
I just have to tell you that I actually made this on Wednesday night after seeing on tasty kitchen. It was amazing. I made some chicken enchiladas I also found on tasty kitchen and it complimented them perfectly. I love this recipe!
girl… your crazy and I like it. wow!
This reminds me so much of the food I saw when I went on a trip to Mexico City last summer. Chocolate in anything is always a bonus :)
As a former vegetarian I am at a bit of a loss as to Michael’s protests. With the array of wonderful flavors in this I think it would be easy to omit the bacon and add more veggies or add a meat substitute without losing anything essential.
Frankly one of the main reasons I ;love your recipes is because they all have a bit of wiggle room to adjust for different tastes while still being your awesome recipe. I can have unique and kid friendly which is not easy to do!
Don’t change a thing!
Fun! Wasn’t expecting a Saturday post, but got excited to see the name of the dish. It sounds so good. Definitely want to bookmark this recipe for the near future. I love all-in-one dishes like this, they are so comforting and full of flavor.
Can I ask how you got started with the Tasty Kitchen stuff?
I’ve been really active on TK since 2009 (posting recipes and stuff) and when they started having contributors, they invited me to be one. I definitely suggest sharing some of your recipes on there if you don’t already – it’s a nice place to network, sort of like a Facebook for recipes!
Umm, wow. I guess it’s easy for people to write rude comments when they are safely behind a computer! I think this looks delicious, and more simple than other recipes I’ve seen for Mole sauce. I’ve only ever had Mole sauce on enchiladas before, but I loooove it and will definitely be trying this rice!
I posted my name and email address – I’m not hiding behind a computer. I’d say the same things I said in my comment in person. Why is criticism automatically considered ‘rude’?
You were crass and severe. Firstly, you call a dish inedible after stating you could never eat it. And comparing a dish by looks only to bodily waste is melodramatic at best. No reason criticism can’t be civil and a bit less crude.
Sue – agreed – it wasn’t the criticism, it was the comparison to a “bodily movement” that I thought was uncalled for. Michael – if you’d tried the recipe and didn’t enjoy it I’d think you were within your rights to share that here. However, Jessica makes a living off of blogging and food photography – and clearly does both very well. She made a difficult to photograph food look appealing and not at all like a “bodily movement”. So. yes, I did find your criticism rude. I guess I’m just a believer in the idea of “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything.” I love this blog, and while I’m not inclined to make everything that’s posted, I don’t leave impolite comments either. I just accept that the recipe isn’t for me, and move on.
I so have to make this!
I made this because it looked and sounded SO delicious… But I have to admit – It was just OK. I was expecting more flavor… More pow… more something. I’m just not sure what.
But I will say that it would make a great side dish to enchiladas or chicken.
I also added a dollop of sour cream to my portion and that helped :)
I go to London for a week, come back and BAM you have a redesign! LOVE IT!!! Seriously, it is just amazing. So clean and pretty. Congrats! And please know, I take no issue with this delicious looking recipe. I’m a much more simplistic cook, but I always love coming to your blog for inspiration! And laughs. ;)
This looks delicious. I’m thinking throw some shrimp on it and call it a meal!
I’ve never had mole anything! I can’t wrap my head around the chocolate component but I’m sure it’s very delicious.
I just made my first mole sauce and I think I’m in love. This rice looks incredible. What a fantatic recipe!
I tried this recipe…and it didn’t sit well in my stomach. I have felt very sick all day…and I normally like your recipes :(
Waiting for it to pass…painful………
Jacylnn… it may have been the high amount of acid in the recipe due to the chocolate and the large quantity of tomato paste, but also – did your rice seem cooked all the way through? Sometimes when I eat undercooked rice it really bothers my stomach. Since this isn’t my own personally developed recipe (it’s a TK member’s) I haven’t tested it quite enough to see what other issues could be. Hope you feel better!!
Hey Jessica,
Am I doing something wrong? I got the same rice from trader joes & after 50 min over being covered the rice is still not tender… I keep adding more broth and water… But the rice is still hard. I’m afraid to turn the heat up because I don’t want it to burn… Any recommendations???
@Jaclynn L, I wonder if the acidity from the tomato paste & chocolate is to blame?
I had a very similar experience after eating mole at a restaurant, I felt discomfort & pain in my upper abdomen for days after. I finally went to a doctor & found out I had a small peptic ulcer…. Recommendation take a zantac before/during/or after eating highly acidic foods.. I’m only saying this because it works & there’s really nothing in this recipe that would cause you to get sick other wise :)
Holy amazing. Now that it’s done, it’s wonderful! I’m glad I added more bacon :)
Holy crap! Now I have got to make this for lunch- TODAY!
:-)
Do you know how disturbing that post title in my email was?! I’ve never contemplated eating mole or any of the other animals from the Wind in the Willows so I’m glad to discover that we’re actually talking about Mexican cuisine. It looks yummy and as another vegetarian, I’d suggest substituting veggie bacon or some smoked tofu or whatever else. :)
Um…yes! This looks and sounds fantastic! I can honestly say that you find the most creative ways to spice things up! Sorry I haven’t been commenting much lately. I’ve been reading but with school starting those second graders don’t leave me any time to do anything! ha!
It has all of life’s great ingredients. Sounds delicious. I have a friend who would be flipping for this because she loves bacon so much.
Bacon and Chocolate together? Oh my gosh!! It sounds heavenly! Have to check it out!!
I’ve never tried mole! Guess we’ll have to change that now, won’t we?
Would this work well with turkey bacon? I do not eat pork products, but I would love to make this dish. Should I just omit the bacon or show I try to sub with the turkey variety?
I love this mole rice recipe. I like the ingredients used. I’ll have to give it a try,. The chocolate must add an interesting flavor. Thank you for the recipe.
Made this tonight, as a side dish to vension tacos. Very tasty. This will certainly be one of my go-to Mexican sides. Thanks for the step by step instructions on TK!
OMG.. LOVE LOVE LOVE Mole… I cannot wait to try this recipe out. Yay! Thank you SO much!
I’ve been following the site because one of my friends told me you were a fitness trainer & had some great recipes. I have to say I’m a little disappointed…I was expecting things that were a bit healthier. This looks like it has over 1,000 calories in one serving. Would you recommend this to your fitness clients? I just had to ask since I’ve seen so few recipes lately that seem healthy. Love the site, just wish you had some more options that were a bit healthier.
Hi Meredith – not sure how long you have been following the site but I haven’t been a personal trainer since 2008. However, yes, this actually is something I’d recommend to my clients. I don’t know if you read the recipe but there is no way a serving is 1000 calories considering this recipe is basically brown rice, tomato paste, spices, vegetables and stock. Those are all healthy things, right? There is only 1 ounce of semi-sweet chocolate (some of the darkest you can get) and 2 slices of bacon divided between 6-8 servings. You will never find me sharing totally bland, plain food (read egg whites, plain chicken, salads) that doesn’t include all ingredients or telling someone to never have dessert. I love food way too much, have always believed in moderation and made super successful, lifestyle-focused plans for my clients. I tend to share 2-3 healthy recipes per week, 2 desserts/treats or 1 comfort food recipe (sometimes lightened up) depending on the season. This has never been a fitness or strict health food only blog so I’m not sure about the confusion. Thanks so much for reading though.
No need to get so defensive – sorry, didn’t know this hit such a nerve with you. I was commenting about the lack of healthy recipes because all of your recent recipes seem not to be very health-conscious (or event things you can eat in “moderation”) – here’s last week: gooey s’mores ice cream cake, brown butter garden vegetable pasta skillet, homemade chicken cheesesteaks, quick + easy no bake oatmeal peanut butter bites.
I’m not sure why you assumed I was asking for plain, flavorless items. “Healthy” food doesn’t mean tasteless food. I would have hoped as a former fitness trainer you would know that. I’m shocked your response was so defensive.
I truly didn’t mean to sound defensive at all – I just wanted to respond to you thoughtfully and answer the question you asked instead of a one-liner (I am wordy) and I meant it when I said thanks for reading. It’s hard to interpret words through writing because you can’t hear someone’s voice, but it’s also funny how health means different things to different people – I assumed that you didn’t read the recipe for mole rice because I personally do consider it healthy (brown rice, low-sodium stock, veg, spices), which is why I explained it. But I also consider the brown butter vegetable skillet healthy (all veg + whole wheat pasta with only 4 tbsp butter to serve 6) and the oatmeal pb butter bites healthy (chia, flax, oatmeal, nutbutter) as we’ve been using them as pre-workout snacks. Things like butter and pasta and bacon and cheese are still part of our healthy diet, but everyone is different! I guess I am confused as to what sorts of healthy recipes you want, since you mentioned that you’ve been enjoying the site for awhile? Cause we all know I don’t like veg. :)
This recipe has to be the best thing I’ve seen in a LONG time! Love it!
I have a substitution question, can I used unsweetend cocoa powder instead of the chocolate bar? I’d love to make this but only have the powder on hand, thanks!
I think! Maybe try 1-2 teaspoons?
