March Favorites: Beauty (My SkinCare Routine!).
Last March, I did a skincare post and figured I’d give it an update! Especially since I’m not feeling makeup at the moment. While a few things have stayed the same, I have some new favorites too. I’m really not wearing much makeup at all right now given this quarantined state… and honestly don’t have much desire to even play with it. But when it comes to skincare, I haven’t missed a beat. My morning and nighttime skin care are a part of my daily routine. And I find that when I’m anxious and let things slip, everything goes down hill – healthy habits, skin care, etc. So I’ve made sure to keep up with it this month.
Obviously this is a frivolous post in this crazy time, but if you need a moment to take your mind off everything, it’s here! Plus, it’s like a sneaky peek into my bathroom closet.
P.S. I get most of my skincare at Sephora, Nordstrom or Dermstore. I never buy skincare at full price unless I am desperate and run out, but I have it timed pretty well so that I can take advantage of the sales. Sephora usually has a sale in April and November and that’s when I stock up on Drunk Elephant products. Dermstore has occasional sales too, but SkinCueticals is rarely on sale. If you sign up for emails from Dermstore (ugh, annoying I know), usually once or twice a year there will be a discount on SkinCueticals. Sometimes I find a few things on sale with a 20% Ulta coupon too!
Okay, onto the details…
Morning Skin
Caudalie Moisturizing Toner. I don’t wash my face in the morning! I mean, unless I am sick or overly sweaty or something, I do not wash my face. My skin is dry, so it works better for me. The only thing I do is use this toner with an exfoliating cotton round.
Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser. I do have one exception – on mornings when I work out, I use this cleanser. I love it. Smells like heaven!
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum. This has been the biggest change to my routine in the last year. I finally bought this and I am obsessed with it. Already on my second bottle. It has made my skin brighter, more even and generally more glowy. Definitely worth the hype.
Biossance Squalane and Peptide Eye Gel. This is the eye cream I’ve been using the last few weeks and I LOVE it. Mostly because I really like how it works under concealer. It’s great.
Drunk Elephant Protini Polypetide Moisturizer. This is still my go-to daily moisturizer. It’s gel-like and not too heavy, but still enough for my skin.
EltaMD Broad Spectrum SPF 46. If I’m leaving the house (ha, so not at the moment!), I love this sunscreen. I like how makeup goes over it too, but honestly I’m really just wearing tinted moisturizer/BB cream over it.
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion Defense SPF 50. Sometimes I use this SPF instead – it’s a very light liquidy formula but it’s tinted. I use this more often if we’re going to be outside a lot and I don’t want to wear any makeup, but I do want a little bit of coverage. This goes on so nicely. I don’t ever wear this under makeup.
Nighttime Skin
MAC Cleanse Off Oil. This is still my absolute FAVORITE makeup remover! I love the pump, it completely dissolves any makeup perfectly – it’s wonderful. If I don’t have makeup on that day, I tend to use this Elemis Cleansing Balm. After that, I use the Caudalie Toner + exfoliating cotton round again.
Sunday Riley Good Genes. This is still my forever holy grail, favorite product of life. I cannot live without it. It takes all texture from my skin – it removes blemishes usually in one night. I LOVE IT. I alternate this product and use it every other day. I use Luna Oil with it once or twice a week too.
Dr Dennis Gross Daily Peel Pads. I still alternate the above with these peel pads. So every other day, I use these after cleansing.
Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream. This has been my go-to night cream for years now. I love it. I also just tend to use this as eye cream too. It’s perfect. If needed, I add one of the extras below!
Extras
SkinCueticals Hydrating B5 Gel. I’ve had this for a few months and really love it if my skin is super dry. I use it at night after the Good Genes or Peel Pads, before the moisturizer.
Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil. Definitely my new favorite facial oil. This is light (if that’s possible for an oil) and sinks in nicely. I will either add a drop to my moisturizer or use a layer of this over the moisturizer.
Drunk Elephant F Balm Overnight Mask. This mask has replaced my longtime Dr Jart favorite that I can no longer find. It’s great if your skin is super parched. I used this overtop of everything as the last step.
Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. This is a bonus hydrating mask I’ll do either on a weekend or a night when I take my makeup off early – and just want some extra moisture for my skin. It says you can wipe this off in 10 minutes but I often keep it on! It is very hydrating and makes your face so smooth.
Body
Weleda Skin Food. This is my go-to hand cream (especially now!) and the cream I use if I have any really dry patches. I’ve even used this on my face if needed. It’s definitely super thick, but WORKS. I use this mostly at night or when I have a few minutes to let it sink it during the day.
Indie Lee Energizing Body Wash. I love this body wash right now. It smells like heaven.
Sol de Janiero Brazilian Nude Body Cream. Favorite body cream, hands down! It has a pump, it’s fragrance free and it’s very moisturizing.
Indie Lee De Stress Body Oil. My skin is especially dry in winter and I often add a drop of oil into my moisturizer, but a few months ago I found this and am obsessed. It’s a spray oil and sprays WONDERFULLY (this is important if you’ve ever tried a spray oil!) right onto your skin. I like the de stress version because, well, quarantine.
Exfolikate. I end up using Exfolikate once a week because it’s Eddie’s favorite exfoliator and it stays in our shower. I use it on my arms and occasionally, maybe once a month, even on my face.
KP Duty Body Scrub. This is my all-time favorite scrub though! If you’ve ever had the KP bumps on the back of your arms or legs, this is MAGIC. You do need to use it consistently, but it works so well.
KP Duty AHA Moisturizing Therapy. This is a cream version of the scrub above and it is a miracle worker. Great to use on your arms before/during summer.
First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser. This is similar to the KP duty scrub above, but it’s in a tube! I use this one if I’m in a rush in the shower because you just squeeze it out (as opposed to a tub).
Supergoop Play Everyday SPF 50 Sunscreen. I’ve used this sunscreen for a couple years now (they have changed the name twice!) and I really like it for everyday. And this one has a pump! That changes everything.
And that’s that! Pretty much everything that goes on my skin. I’m so curious to know yours! Share, share below!
[as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are some amazon and general reward style affiliate links above. thank you for being here!]

I’ve been using the Clinique system for about as long as I can remember. It works for my skin type – a combination and never feels like I have to “scrape” it off just to feel as though my skin is clean enough. I do have some freckles and NOTHING can deal with those – oh, well. You have quite a routine and I admire your ability to keep to it with your obviously busy life. Thanks for all the great detailed information though – very nice knowing I could change my routine up at any time.
I love that Ulta has started carrying so many great brands because they have WAY more coupons than Sephora, Sunday RIley and Ouai were such good additions to their line.
Sunscreen/makeup question for you…do you think it is good to put sunscreen on under a tinted moisturizer that also has spf? If so what sunscreen and foundation/tinted moisturizer combo do you use?
Love getting a peek at your routine! Recently I’m really into The Ordinary products (I get them at Ulta to avoid paying shipping) and in particular am loving the niacinamide + zinc serum along with the caffeine serum for undereyes (game. changer. omg.). Also loving Japanese SPFs, even more so now that I’ve been able to get my husband to start using them since the texture is light enough that he doesn’t mind them.
I work in healthcare so not really quarantined (actually reading this on a break at work lol), but still feeling a bit of the stress everyone has, especially trying to find some dang TP at the grocery store after work! Now I’m feeling motivated to make my am/pm skincare more of a mindful routine and “self care” rather than rushing through it before I leave for work/go to bed.
I’m reading this and I can’t stop agreeing! I LOVE The Ordinary. I use the hyaluronic acid + buffet daily and ascorbic acid 8% + marula oil at night and am in love. I like the niacinamide too and need to try the caffeine serum. I also love Japanese/Korean SPF- current favorite is the Missha sun milk ones. Annnnd I also work in healthcare and have to work during all this. Hmm I need to do a face mask when I get home… :)

This post is a nice distraction-and helpful because I’m 34 and trying to figure out a better skincare routine for “aging” skin, haha. I’ve been using a sample of the Drink Elephant glycolic acid night serum every other night and curious if you’ve tried that and prefer the Sunday Riley? Also are the the DE moisturizers very different? I’ve used the Protoni peptide one at night but ran out so now using First Aid beauty which is great but pretty thick. I’ve also been using the DE vitamin c day serum and like it a lot so far! Waiting on a Sephora sale to restock and grab some DE!
I hear you….I haven’t let my skin care routine go (maybe other things, but not this!). I too love the Drunk Elephant moisturizers and Sunday Riley :)
I always love these these posts! I have found some new favorite products thanks to you, so please keep them coming! My skin care routine has evolved recently; I finished accutane a few months ago – during that treatment, my skin was so dry that nothing worked and I had to use heavy duty moisturizing products plus aquaphor on my face every night. Post-accutane, my skin isn’t nearly as dry and is actually a nice balance of moisturized and not very oily. After 30+ years of dealing with combo oily/dry skin, I am so happy! However, now that I have happier skin, I am trying to keep it that way!
My new FAVORITE product is the Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Bomb. After I use this, all my makeup is gone and my face feels so soft and not dried out. It is amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever use another cleanser again.
I am also trying to find a gentle retinol that I can use to help with some acne scarring. It’s so hard because they take a while to become noticeably effective! So far I have tried the Biossance plant-based retinol + squalane, and am now testing The Ordinary’s retinol product (also + squalane). Both feel moisturizing, but I can’t say that I am noticing a huge difference with the retinol. I have been trying not to spend the cash on Good Genes/Luna Oil but maybe I just need to try it?
I recently started using IOPE plant stem cell softener and moisturizer on a daily basis. I was shocked at fast those worked, and noticed a big difference. I hadn’t spent a lot of money on skincare but now that I’m in my 30s, things are changing!! I’ve also started using CeraVe hydrating moisturizer, The Ordinary Vitamin c serum and their Squalane oil. Also, a must is the Pixi Glow tonic and their Hydrating milky mist. I’ve been spritzing mist constantly!
