Tuesday Things.
1. Are you a gift wrapping lover or hater? I’m a major lover. Target kills me with their gorgeous paper that’s only like 20 feet long and covers a third of one box. It doesn’t matter. I’m a sucker.
2. Whoa. Buttercup squash crumble bars. How are these even REAL?
3. My sleep deprivation may have caught up with me two days ago when I seriously asked Eddie if people took infants to the movies. Like, couldn’t we just take him in with us? Ummm. New mom fail.
4. Has anyone else seen the Kmart commercial with the pregnant girls dancing (sort of uncomfortably inappropriately?) for the joe boxer ad? OMG. It makes me SO uncomfortable. I feel like I can say that since I just spent almost the entire last year pregnant. It’s also on about 543 times in the middle of the night. Cannot stand. It’s almost like watching an episode of GIRLS.
5. Last week there was a knock at the door and when I answered, there were about 25 little kids standing outside singing Christmas carols. I just about melted into a puddle. For real, I got tears in my eyes. It was the cutest thing in the universe.
6. Okay, how about the The Affair finale?! I still can’t get over how much I love the show. The finale seemed slightly predictable to me and I wish they had tied up more loose ends, but I’m so glad it’s coming back next year. It’s such a cool show. And, uh, if you know me, you know I was FREAKING OUT about what happened on Homeland. I mean, I thought the episode was terribly boring and just like… whatever. But but but… you know I’ve been waiting for what happened to, well… happen.
7. 7 awesome things you can only do on Sundays. As a fellow Sunday blues sufferer, this is so true.
8. Last week I asked what your favorite holiday movie was… let’s just say I’ve watched about six hours of Christmas movies every single day for the last week.
9. What delicious things are you making in the next few days? I always make lobster mac and cheese on Christmas Eve but am not sure it’s doable this year. But I reeeeeeally want to eat it. Maybe I can teach Eddie how to make it? Cue gigantic fight. That’s probably how that will end.

Both of the KMart Joe Boxer commercials make me uncomfortable. The guys playing drums on their beer bellies is disturbing. I also spend most of last year pregnant and I NEVER could see myself dancing like that. Much less being able to move like that, especially when I was that pregnant.
I thought of you when “that” happened on Homeland! Like I literally thought of what your reaction would be and how I couldn’t wait to read your comments on it. Quinn is like a different guy from one moment to the next sometimes. I never really had a thing for him before, but I kind of fell in love with him during that episode. He really has such a soft side.
Same! It was so obvious it was going to happen in that scene and I immediately thought of Jessica and how she was probably freaking out about it!
People take newborns to the movies all the time! As long as you know him and he is on somewhat of a schedule and you don’t go during his fussy time you’ll be fine. Especially if you’re nursing. Do it now while you can because it won’t last. And there’s a lot of good movies out there.
i took my infant to movies all the time! Enjoy it now before he gets big enough to move around.
You can totally take a newborn to a movie! They are so easy – you can nurse or they sleep the whole time. We went to see the Hobbit (so long!) when our baby was about 4 weeks old and she was a dream.
Um, I totally took an infant to the movies. A couple of movies actually. Choose a matinée, aim for a naptime, sit near the door, and you’re golden. The sound acts like white noise, and it’s dark. Come to think of it, I should have taken our little guy more often! :-)
The first two weeks is the perfect time to take infants to the movies! They sleep so much at that age- it’s perfection. Go ASAP, it will not last forever!!
you can definitely Take him to the movies! Especially now while he isn’t super squirmy and will sleep anywhere. If he cries you can just nurse him and nobody will know! Do it now before you’re stuck waiting for redbox because by the time you coordinate a sitter the movie you wanted to see is already gone. Makes my husband crazy lol
OMG YES THE KMART COMMERCIAL. I just can’t watch it when it comes on. I used to Zumba with my best friend throughout her pregnancy, and even then she didn’t bust out moves as scandalous as the K-Mart ladies.
And I totally wouldn’t judge someone who brought an infant/newborn to the movies. Pffft, they’ll sleep through the whole thing!
I totally DESPISE that scandalous Kmart commercial.. so tasteless!
Oh, we have so much deliciousness planned, both made and purchased. I picked up some gorgeous artisan chocolate orange bars earlier….it’s taking all my self-control not to eat them before my husband gets home!
omg. lobster mac and cheese sounds so incredibly good. i may have to make it.
also loving the affair. i’m just about to watch episode 9 (most likely tonight), but i am soooo addicted.
The Homeland finale was only the second episode my husband has watched with me and the whole time I kept apologizing, “I swear the rest of the season was so exciting and nail-biting!” Side note: the dancing pregnant bellies commercial came on as I was typing. Awkward. Anyway, then the THING happened and I was like, “WOAH that was HUGE.” He didn’t even care!
Also, I tried to watch my DVRd The Affair yesterday, then about 4 minutes in, I realized it’s probably not appropriate to watch in front of a two-year old… I love it though. I’m a bit in love with Joshua Jackson though, so it’s a given. Dawson’s Creek for life!
Story about nothing, thanks for listening.
you are rocking new momma life from what I can tell!!! Yes totally go to the movies, perfect place to snuggle and feed too :)
Hoping it works out perfectly and you can make your Mac & cheese, maybe hubby can help boil water & hold baby..you got this!!
ummmm the last harry potter came out right after my daughter was born. she went. we had a floor seat and were on the end and we saw the midnight showing and she slept through the entire thing. still don’t regret it. to this day she goes where we go. she’s our only one, she’s 4, and what we go and do, she does as well. and let me tell you, she is so very go with the flow. we travel and she’s perfect. don’t let having a baby stop you from doing anything!
The first couple of months are the BEST TIME to take your little one to the movies. My Dr told me that before I had my first baby and totally thought he was nuts! But he was so right, the first few months all they do is sleep and eat so as long as you’re fine with snuggling and nursing in a movie theater, it’s the perfect time to see a movie. Congratulations by the way, he is precious!!
HUGE gift wrap lover. I agree – Target has the best and I get sucked in every time, but seriously, I’d like to buy one roll rather than 10. :)
THANK YOU. I thought I was being a total prude and sorta hater-ish feeling uncomfortable about the prego twerking in the Joe Boxer ads. I mean, yay for pregnant ladies being comfortable with their bodies – but basically that’s not something I need to see ANYONE doing in a commercial. And if that makes me a Puritan, whatevs.
Take your infant to the movies!
I HATE wrapping gifts! I’m going to start tonight though… hopefully a glass of wine or two will help me ;)
I hate, hate, HATE the Joe Boxer commercial with the dancing pregnant women. Something about it is just really unnerving. I am almost ready for Christmas to be over just so they stop running that commercial!
Your little guy is absolutely gorgeous! Enjoy your first Christmas as a family of three!
You can totally take an infant to the movies. We took my son when he was just a month old. It was our daughter’s first time to the movies, too. He pretty much slept through the whole thing. He woke up maybe once to nurse. But we were sitting towards the back on a Saturday afternoon, so the theatre was pretty empty. We didn’t get any weird looks from anyone either!!
OMG that Kmart commercial is just too much. I need to know what’s going to happen next season on The Affair!!! I kind of hate that you know who and you know who are married now though. Oh the scene by the truck on Homeland <3 <3 <3
Hi Jessica! I have been reading your blog for about a year and sooo enjoy it. You are so talented and creative! Last night I was reading, and was telling my husband you had your baby, and he was like “But you’ve never met this person, right? Why are you showing me pics of her baby?” To which I replied “But I feel like I know her and I’m so happy for her. Also she’s responsible for at least half a dozen of this family’s favorite dinners,” which made me realize I should tell you congratulations! And also thank you for all the great recipes! Happy Holidays :)
I love wrapping presents. I usually wrap all of the gifts my mother buys, even those that are for me.
I haven’t watched this season of Honeland yet. I’ll probably marathon it this week since I’m now off work until Monday. Looking forward to it.
Allow me to chime in with the ladies who say you can take an infant to the movies! Enjoy it now, when you can take him and he will just sleep and nurse. What I don’t suggest is taking a one year-old to the movies. Won’t ever do that again. :)
I took my infant to the movies, she slept through the whole entire movie no problem! It was great! I’d suggest doing it now when they sleep all the time because once they hit like 3-4 months they will wake up to the noise!
I am indifferent to gift wrapping. But mainly because it looks like a toddler has done it with mine.
You totally can (and should) take your baby to a movie!
yes you can take your baby!! When my friends little brother was born, her mom couldnt stop entertaining the 4 other kids! We went to the movies and to the mall when he was just a newborn!
I totally took my infant to the movies….each time she just slept or nursed. Newborns and infants are fine…its when they turn that corner and start doing things other than eating, pooping and sleeping that you should probably just stay home.
I took my newborn son to half a dozen movies, and it was awesome! He would feed, sleep, and I got to get out and do something adult. Do it, because when they start crawling, walking, etc it is definitely out of the question!!
I love wrapping presents. I used to wrap every present in my family except the ones for me.
Wish I could come make you guys that lobster mac and cheese. Hope you find a lovely, easy dish to make this year and enjoy your lovely little family!
Merry Christmas!
I want carolers to come to my door. That sounds so lovely.
Total wrapping paper lover!!
People take newborns to the movies all the tiiiiiime!!! The only reason I didn’t take Owen was bc he was a preemie and we couldn’t leave the house with him until 3 months after his DUE DATE so, like, 4.5 months after he was born. Andplusalso, the closest movie theater is like 457,000 miles away from our tiny country town.OMG! And that Joe Boxer commercial is awful!!! *shudders*
I love wrapping presents! I even got my dogs presents and wrapped them, haha.
Also, Christmas movies are the best, I think I’ve watched the majority of them so far and some I’ve watched more the 5 times.
Merry Christmas, I love reading your blog every day even though I don’t comment all the time.
Ugggggh, that commercial. Who are they targeting? Apparently a mixed bunch, because that commercial is often followed by one for AsianDate and some other dating website. The whole lineup is just so confusing and scary to me.
ok, so thank you for mentioning those commercials BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOST AWKWARD THING I’VE EVER SEEN. like.. i just cant.
omg THANK YOU. that commercial is HORRIBLE. Why do they have to booty pop? If they’re that pregnant and happy about their pj’s I’m pretty sure they’d just lie down. I can’t help but picture the conference room where everyone was like ‘yes okay so then we’ll have the slutty pregnant dancers that sounds great. wtf/!?
I’m a gift paper sucker myself, I’ve got zebra and cheetah gift paper for no reason… but it’s sooo pretty!!! :-)
My daughter was born a few weeks before the first Lord of the Rings movie came out…my husband and I were dying to see it and talked more than a few times about taking the baby…(she would be quiet and mostly sleeping anyway, right?) We chickened out and went alone individually…but now I see all of these other comments and I’m thinking we might have been able to pull it off!
When my little man was born I took him to “stars and strollers”.. Many theatres offer mom-baby showings with lower volume. I’d go and Kalon was sleeping most of the time. Or I fed him.. Easy! Good luck!
As “bad parent”-y as that sounds, I’ve seen parents bring babies into movies in their carriers. I think it’s odd but they have to be desperate for some time out of the house when they do this.
my son was a really tough baby so I would never have taken him to a regular showing at the movie theater but almost every theater near here (big chains too like Showcase cinemas) had a moms showing in the afternoon once a week. They didn’t dim the light all the way and some locations even had a big changing table right in the theater. It was all the newest movies and it was even discounted! It was the best!!! Definitely look into something like that if you are nervous about disturbing other movie goers. Everyone is in the same boat at those mom showings :)
Ahh! We made your lobster mac on Christmas Eve and it was wonderful! In fact, the leftovers were the only ones I wouldn’t let anyone touch as we were dividing up what remained of Christmas dinner! I’ve been wanting to make it for-ev-er and I’m sorry I waited so long but I think it’s going to be a tradition now.
On a side note, I’m not a mom yet, though it’s on the horizon, but I would totally be asking the same questions as you. In fact, the other day, my husband and I got really excited to see a baby at our favorite local bar. We both exclaimed, “yesss, babies are allowed at our bar!” While thinking and doing may in fact be two very different things, I like the prospect of it.
you should look into the movies where you can bring babies with you. They have them during the day. I never had a chance during my maternity leave but I so wanted to to break up the day. Look aorund for theaters in your area. I think AMC does it.
Okay, please don’t hate but as a girl who bellydanced her entire pregnancy, including for 2 hours the day before I went into labor, I LOVE the KMart commercial!! I swear the dancing made my recovery super fast, too, so I highly recommend it if you’re up for it.
Happy baby-cuddles to you, Jessica!
I completely agree with the kmart commercial but I have never been pregnant and feel like I don’t have a say!
Every year I vow to not buy another roll of wrapping paper, but every darn time Target gets me. I love wrapping gifts over using gift bags. I think there is something special about giving a wrapped gift.
