Tuesday Things.
1. Have you seen the meme: I’m physically in October but mentally still processing March?! OMG that is spot on.
2. Remember last week when I talked about the cricket in my car? Well. Now our entire neighborhood has tons of crane flies, which basically look like enormous mosquitos and they dive bomb us the minute we step outside. As you can imagine, I’m not being dramatic about it at all.
3. Chocolate matcha sticky buns! I need these.
4. TV things!! Did anyone else watch Emily in Paris? I watched the entire thing and was… sort of underwhelmed. It felt really young/fake to me, but at the same time I am so desperate for normal TV and movies to come back! I wanted to love it, and I did like it, but it just didn’t… freak out over it. Thoughts?
5. What are you reading? SO EXCITED because Elin’s new book is out today!! Eeeep!
6. Thoughts on planning 2021 vacations? Would you do it?
7. How to keep a simple home with kids. Love love love this.
8. Is it too early to put up the christmas tree? Asking for a friend.

We’re planning flexible 2021 vacations. We booked a beach house with friends, as we do every year. This year we still went, but we all self-isolated 2 weeks before and after, and didn’t go into the town at all. We were still able to enjoy our annual trip and each other’s company.
We haven’t planned any other trips but, strangely thanks to COVID, we’ve been able to embrace more spontaneity overall and especially our love of camping. We have the gear and it doesn’t require a lot of planning to execute on discovering a new part of our state or region.
CRANE FLIES. We had one in our bedroom last week. I left it alone because they’re harmless and my room has high ceilings, so I felt like we could give each other space. Then the day after we had the house cleaned, I found it on the floor barely alive. I had to put it out of its misery and felt bizarrely sad about it.
TV: Have you tried Filthy Rich yet? I watched the first three episodes and am way into it.
TRIPS: Other than visits to family, which involve insane logistics and keeping our 2-yo home from daycare before and after, I can’t even mentally go there yet. My friend’s wedding was postponed from this past March to the coming March; but she’s afraid she still won’t be able to have it then. We have yet to take a trip without my daughter and are pretty ready for some adult-only time.
TV: I was going to watch Emily in Paris but maybe not! I’m normally not into a ton of TV but I watched Julie and the Phantoms on Netflix this past weekend and binged all 9 episodes because it was so fun!! The clothes, the catchy music…it’s geared more towards the younger crowd (15 and up maybe) but I still looooooooooooved it. Poppy fun music and a bedazzled leather jacket and I was done!!
TRIPS: I want to but it’s like I just can’t wrap my brain around it yet. We haven’t been anywhere since last December but I need some new scenery for sure!!
Our family was planning on going to Disney World in spring of 2021 but we’ve decided to push back to 2022. We *might* do a road trip to see national parks or visit cities we’ve not been to before though.
Vacation planning. . . I tell you what, I love the mental boost planning some time away gives me. Not the actual planning (despite that), but just the opportunity to let my brain rest on the idea that I’ll be doing something different/new/away. So, I absolutely am thinking about 2021. We still have an airline credit, and I’m crossing my fingers they don’t go out of business and I can use it next year – it’s international, so I’ll have to finagle it for Thanksgiving break 2021. . . BUT, if our county still doesn’t open the schools in the spring, then we might try some sort of trip with a few days of virtual check-ins for work and school. . . have to think on that.
Im planning a 2021 destination wedding. God help me. Its either going to be the perfect escape we all need or i’ll end up in a mental hospital over it. Go big or stay home right?!
We have two driveable beach house vacations planned with immediate family but that’s it. We’re still a little hesitant to plan anything major in case things are still a mess next summer :(
I watched Emily in Paris. It was exactly what I thought it would be….perfect to accompany my endless laundry folding. Haha. It actually is a lot like Younger. Since I usually don’t binge that show, it seems less offensive than Emily in Paris. And the more I thought about it, the more disappointed I was about Emily/Darren Star because the shows are so similar. Apparently I have a lot of thoughts on it. Ha.
I got an email from amazon this morning that my book order for Troubles in Paradise is delayed, and I’m so sad!
We rented a stand alone cabin with a game room and hot tub overlooking the ski runs in Breckenridge and drove (about 12 hours for us from StL) in August 2020 after scrapping our planned 2020 vacation to Maine. We’ll plan the same type of drivable vacation for Summer 2021, someplace pretty, with a cabin or house with fun amenities that we can rent, as well as hikes to do in the area. Perhaps Michigan, perhaps Wisconsin, maybe even back to Colorado. We’ll likely just scrap any type of Spring Break trip this year though, other than maybe driving to see family in Chicago or someplace very close.
Are you in the Peloton Facebook book group that Elin is a part of? Apparently she’s a big Peloton fan and actually joined the Peloton Mom’s book group!
We have been planning and saving for a few years a Summer 2021 sabbatical abroad (roughly 2 months away). Now, with our savings taking a hit and not knowing what travel will look like, we’re rethinking everything.
I’m beyond sad. I
I’ve just planned two trips to beaches this year. i know… quite adventurous but we have had enough of letting covid dictating our life, so we are going! :)
Those flies sound insane! Is this a PA thing? Should I expect them down and over in Gettysburg?! 🤣
110% planning for ‘21 travel (I own a travel agency), also planning last minute travel throughout the end of the year.
Know the current restrictions, mentally be okay with potential change, be super grateful for flexible policies and keep on going!
I saw someone mention National Parks – they are so hot right now and into ‘21, we’re having availability issues already! 😳
I hope you keep your annual plans!
I cannot wait for Elin’s book to get here physically to my house!
Also, did you see that she’s on peloton?!
I almost tagged you on her post when she said that. 😂😂
TV: If you don’t mind a show centered around a pandemic theme try out Amazon Prime’s “Utopia” with great performances by John Cusack and Rainn Wilson. “Soulmates” on AMC just premiered Monday October 5th and is also interesting. if you took a test to identify your true soulmate and it wasn’t your current partner, would you leave them for the soulmate? Sounds like “Emily in Paris” is forgettable so I may go with “Ratched” instead.
Trips: You all are much braver than me. As a person with a compromised immune system and health care background I err on the side of caution. I’ll live vicariously through television shows and their experiences until things become safer. I wish all of you good health and good social distancing and mask habits while on your excursions.
The last several times away, we’ve rented cabins and it works our so well – no hotel noise and we can cook whatever we want without having to find a place to eat. We like to visit state parks and walk the trails. We always pack a picnic lunch so we can social distance and enjoy the outdoors. They’re free! I love getting this kind of exercise because you don’t even realize that you’re exerting yourself. We don’t go super far and that makes the time much more enjoyable. Naturally we’re all hoping that this virus can be corralled soon but until then, we just deal with it and make the best of it. We’ve been to some absolutely beautiful places that we might not ever have visited if not for this mess so it’s been a good way to see areas.
2021 vacation booked – with vacation insurance just in case. We don’t anticipate flying though.
My favorite books of the last few months are The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes, Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon, and Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes.
Crane flies eat mosquitos and are your friend. Just sayin.
