Many moons ago, I wrote a post about six things my mom was right about. It was actually one of my first posts ever.
Let’s be honest… mom’s are usually right about everything.
Especially this.
Not, not vegetables.
Bacon grease. Frying things in bacon grease… including vegetables. And potatoes. And eggs. And anything else you can get your grubby little hands on. If this offends you, I apologize.
But not really. Because it is the best thing ever.

I’m Jessica and this is where I share my stuff. You will find a balance of healthy recipes, comfort food and indulgent desserts.
Scary but mom often does know best…. and bacon grease is definitely right.

I threw out my reserved grease when I left for school after the Summer. Now that I’m home, I miss it :-(

You must fry up some more!

Seriously – mom does know best, and if mom is giving out bacon-filled advice…I’ll take it!

With one picture you have me brainstorming ideas for lunch – egg scramble, breakfast potatoes, asparagus and veggies, stir fry… so many options for those sauteed veggies. Mmm… lunch time is here.

Bacon grease makes bad food taste good. I’m southern. This is how we do things. =D

I hope Skylar thinks I know best when she’s about 13 going on 33 :)
Off to read that other post you linked…first posts ever? Those are always gems! It’s a glimpse into the bloggers life before they knew they were a blogger so to speak. I love those posts!

Oh no, duck fat! Everything is better in duck fat! (that’s what my mom says ;-)

Mom’s really are right about eveerything. Although, I’m not sure my mom would agree with this as she’s a vegetarian like me! :)

My grandma always cooked things in lard. I always thought it was gross but now I’m curious!
Reply
Jessica — December 30th, 2010 @ 10:23 pm
My grandma used lard in pie crusts, but I’m pretty sure lard doesn’t have the same flavor that bacon fat does!

Just read your post from 2009, why were we all so scared to ask abt shaving our legs?!?!?!?!
We were weird. Our future kids will be weird as well.

it is the ONLY way to fix pancakes. sounds gross, but it makes the edges crispy and wonderful.

Doesn’t sound gross to me!

moms know everything. I once askedmy mom if there was a ‘mom’ book out there that you get when you have kids :)

I think you may have been a southern belle in a former life!! ha ha

My mom doesn’t do this but my grandma does! Only she is a bit over the top and if there isnt a mug full of bacon fat on the stove butter is a great alternative. Her butter dish constantly has 1 lb of butter in it. Eggs fry in a good inch of the stuff! Don’t get me wrong, all of her food is so yummy…but when I leave her house after the holidays, I really need an apple and water to flush out my system.

The joke goes that I could unhealthy anything. I mean some meannnnn smothered green beans. You’ve gotta use fresh beans, a pound of a good quality bacon, all the grease & a few other absolutely AMAZING ingredients. Mmm mmm. They’re a requirement at any family function. :]

My mom used real bacon grease in her Chex Mix, too. So good. Yum!

agreed! There’s nothing like that hit of smoky flavor that a little bacon grease can give!

I just read the original post. Hysterical. I was never allowed to to the sleepovers, or the leg shaving, or the private phone line thing either. Actually, I lied…I was allowed to go to a coed sleepover my senior year of high school, but only after my mom called and told the mom that I couldn’t sleep in the same room as the boys. So embarrassing.

Amen sistah! I cook EVERYTHING in bacon grease. Everything.

I’m afraid to try using bacon grease for the sole possibility that I will love it so much that I will never return to olive!

I believe it’s good… but I just. can’t. do. it.
However, isn’t it amazing how much our mothers have learned since we were in college?

Well, since I’m vegetarian, I keep a jar of tofu grease. Good stuff!
Uh, maybe not.

That’s a gutsy post. I’d never post anything like that because my mom would remind me of it on a daily basis.
I never make bacon so never has grease, but when I was at home last week, I used the bacon frying pan to make eggs after the bacon was done….best eggs ever.

I make popcorn for the boys with it for a treat. I also made my caramel for my bacon candied popcorn I made for a holiday party. Crap, I never blogged about it. Oops, I better get on that one!

mm the bacon grease sounds yummy, but i am one of those people that actually enjoys the taste of raw veggies too :)

Mmmm…bacon grease makes veggies oh-so-flavorful! <3

That’s naughty! I have to say…I’m a little scared to try that! So you use the bacon grease right after making the bacon, or can you save it? Doesn’t it get a little hard?
Reply
Jessica — December 31st, 2010 @ 11:49 am
You can do both… yes, it gets firm and looks disgusting – my mom always kept it in a jar in the fridge. It is like a grayish color. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover!!

lol..ok ill give it a try!
I totally, totally agree.. but I have not had bacon in a Wee while, it sounds, and looks delish though.
Happy New Year.

Bacon grease is the best. The way I see it, it’s better to use a bit of that to grease the pan than some artificially flavored/colored “healthy buttery spread” stuff. Plus, if acquiring it means I have to make my way through a package of bacon, so be it ;)

haha, once my uncle was frying up some pancakes for breakfast and he was using regular cooking oil and when I told him my mom always used butter to grease the pan he said that was crazy and ‘high fat’ and he didn’t believe me.
I know Bacon grease is awesome for stuff like that but I’m a butter fan! Same difference though. I feel ya sister.

Heck yeah! Frying things in bacon grease sounds like a good time to me!

Why is it that moms are always right?

I found a recipe that you might like. Creamy Spinach…it has a cream sauce, onions..fried with chopped bacon..and Parmesan cheese. I found it online. It’s a Taste of the South recipe. Husband didn’t like it, but I did…maybe cut back on nutmeg if I get to make it again.

That’s my secret to my fabulous french toast!!….I fry it in bacon grease!!….my grandma tought me to always save my bacon grease in a jar in the fridge. I don’t really do that any more, because I don’t cook with bacon grease like I used too……..but try it with french toast…..you’ll never want to make it with butter or cooking spray again!!

I bet Waffle House and little diners do this!
