I’ve made this a few times – heaven. The best variation… like makes your teeth hurt but you eat half of it before you even know it … is chocolate base w/ toffee bits and toasted pecans stirred into the filling. DO IT! I’ve even gone as far as to add cocoa powder to the cream cheese layer. I have dessert issues.

Oh girl, I’ve made several of these cakes myself! There’s a restaurant near where I live called Bonge’s Tavern and they make this in a chocolate variety too. Sinful!

As a native St. Louisian, gooey butter cake pretty much is s staple. What I love is the bakery down the street which makes nothing but the stuff and in unimaginable flavors.
The original rocks the socks off, and should be experienced first, but other flavors definitely work well too.
Makes me want to nom some this morning.

Sounds delicious. I began searching for a recipe after having a Gooey Louie butter cake. Thanks for taking the initiative to change it from a cake mix version, because I didn’t want one that starts with a mix. Can’t wait to surprise my co-workers with one of these babies!

I’ve never had gooey butter cake before and this was good – almost too sweet for our taste though. I liked it much better after it had been sitting for a while and gotten totally cold.

Should you keep it in the fridge if there are any leftovers?
