Seven Things.

1. When the brownies exploded in the oven, I opened the over door and just stared in disbelief. Then I facebooked. And tweeted. And took pictures. And prayed it would just go away. I’m everything that I hate about my generation.

I peeked inside the oven about 16 times, just making sure it was still there. I thought maybe the cleaning fairy had taken care of it for me. I thought willing it to go away would work. FYI: this doesn’t happen in real life. I’ve come to the conclusion that stepping away from the situation prevented a massive meltdown.

Maybe I’m a grown up now?

2. I’m obsessed with hot pink. So much so that I think I permanently discolored my fingers (now hot pink) for a recipe you will see later this week. I have a pink mixer, pink measuring cups, spoons and bowls … and even put a pink tissue box in Mr. How Sweet’s bathroom. If you remember our wedding photos, you surely know I love pink. It looked like someone upchucked pink immediately before the reception.

But… my favorite color is still black.

3. Speaking of weddings, Jenna reminded me this past weekend about our cookie room. How does one forget that? I’m really getting old. And I want to have another wedding just for the cookie room. Not that I remember eating any.

And yes, that’s Mother Lovett, intensely deciding which cookie to eat while touching every single one and claiming, “Eh! None of these are as pretty as mine.” If you were at the wedding, you most likely ate a cookie fingered by Mother Lovett. Sorry.

4. And while we’re on the topic of Mother Lovett, do you know what baffled me most of all? She buttered her crackers. And no, we’re not talking whole wheat Wasa crackers. Pretty sure those didn’t exist back in the day. And by ‘back in the day,’ I mean the year of 1993. Because 1993 has been etched in my memory as the year I walked into her kitchen and watched her slather butter on a stack of Ritz crackers. Then she dipped them in cheese soup.

I have no idea where I came from.

5. Since we are still mid-wedding chat, did I ever mention that the limo took a detour to the beer distributor before the reception? Yes, immediately following the ceremony. The boys must have mistook that case of beer for water. And really, the 10 minute drive from the church to the venue was just a little too long. Who wins best driver of 2008? The guy who managed to back up a stretch 20-seater, bigger-than-a-Hummer limo down a one way alley and into a free parking spot.

6. I sort of like some vegetables now. Like… mushrooms. Sauteed. In lots and lots of butter. With salt. And cheese. And maybe even broccoli?

7. Just kidding! Not broccoli. Not ever. Blech! I’d rather eat a shoe.

I really want a cookie room at my own wedding. Or at the very least, a cookie table. And a dark chocolate table.

#4 is AWESOME. I love Mother Lockett. And gosh, I absolutely know what you mean about the cleaning fairy and wishing s/he’d come! I thought that just this morning when, for some insane reason, I decided to blow on the marzipan balls I’d just rolled in cocoa. (I was trying to blow away the cocoa that had fallen on the plate…)

I used to looove Ritz crackers. I’m pretty sure I buttered them as a kid. Or topped them with cheese.

I love all your stories of Mother Lovett. Please keep sharing them.

Oh my goodness. A cookie room! I think I just fell in love with you a bit more (if that’s possible).
I’m definately having a dessert room at my wedding and I’ll be dedicating it to you.

Hahahaha. I loved this post. You are SO funny and I love reading this blog. But this comment is really just to reassure you that apparently your little detour isn’t all that unusual: we did the same thing on the 15 minute limo ride to my cousin’s wedding a few summers back. The sad thing is that between somethign like 16 people, they started with what I can only guess were at least 10 bottles of Oliver wine and Champagne…. and then we had to get more literally five minutes from the Church. I’m pretty sure half of us were almost drunk by the time we got there.

Are you sure you weren’t at my wedding? ;)

My wedding was a pink explosion as well. My brother was a good sport and wore a BRIGHT pink shirt, my husband had the matching tie on.

I love when you write about Mother Lovett.

I used to butter my soda crackers and then eat them just like that. I haven’t done it in a few years – you just reminded me about it!

You know what? We should all have a cookie room, a cupcake room, and a bacon room.

Oh, and maaaaaaaybe a vegetable room. But that would be called a garden. And it would be outside. Locked up.

Love reading the posts about a cookie room/table at a wedding being a good idea….don’t they realize that in western PA if you didn’t have this it wouldn’t be considered a valid marriage?????

This is such a sweet post! Your wedding photos are gorgeous, Jessica!

I butter saltine crackers before dipping them into soup…is that weird? If so, don’t tell me ’cause I sure don’t want to be weird! :-)

That cookie room was done at my girlfriend’s daughter’s wedding. It’s a ‘thing’ from her area. I was totally intrigued by it. They even had ‘to go’ boxes for each guest to take home a half dozen or so.

      Is she from PA?

Buttered crackers are the BEST! Especially buttered saltines with chili. Better get ya some! :)

Oh no!!! Buttered saltines are AMAZING!!! My grandma and mama have done that my entire life, especially when we make my mamaw’s recipe for chili! If you want to beat some serious winter blues, butter up some saltines, top with piping hot chili, and polish it all off with amaretto-spiked cocoa. You’ll forget Seasonal Depression Disorder even exists!

I learned to butter crackers for soup from my grandma too. I did it for years. Such a bad habit.

So the brownies did literally explode?!?! Oh my!

I love that shade of pink of the bridemaids’ dresses. :)

    Hi Jessica!!!

I’m new to your blog and I just wanted to let you know that I love it!

I absolutely love pink as well!! But it’s not my favorite color either.

I didn’t know there was any such thing as a cookie room for a wedding. I may have to have another wedding just for the cookie room.

I think I would have walked away from the brownie explosion (or cried hysterically, either one) too.

Oh…and maybe with the mushrooms with lots and lots of butter you can have some ritz crackers??? ;-)

    Have a great week!!

hey, my grandpa used to make little mini sammies out of saltines and butter. I have never seen anyone else do that! But I have to admit I tired them, and they were delicious. I miss my grandpa. Love your blog. xoxo
