Chocolate Covered Clementine Smoothie (With Coconut Milk Chocolate Ganache!)
We so need to talk about this.
This smoothie is currently saving my life.
Earlier this week I got hit with my first sinus infection in almost two years and was petrified – like, um, how can I take care of a baby when I feel like garbage and can’t really take anything to feel better?!? I got desperate and starting juicing and blending all the things. Apple cider vinegar is always my go-to, so with a daily concoction of that, I began tossing clementines into the blender with extra blood oranges.
UM, it tasted like a freaking orange julius! You gotta do this.
Please tell me you’ve had an old school orange julius?! They were a staple when I was growing up – every Friday my mom, aunt, cousin and mother lovett would go shopping while my grandpa would watch our brothers until our dads got home. Then we’d all end up eating pizza or something, but not before multiple stops during the day at either orange julius or baskin robbins for a pralines and cream cone or… both. Both. That’s how it should be!
After I made the first clementine smoothie, I determined that I needed to make another but cover it in chocolate. Like those chocolate covered oranges you can find around the holidays?? They are sort of hit or miss for me, but sometimes I just LOVE the combo. And I made it mostly based on one of my favorite old-school snacks – these chocolate covered clementines.
The chocolate is a coconut milk ganache – and if you use a high-quality pure dark chocolate, then your entire smoothie is vegan! Whoa.
I want to swan dive into this bowl of chocolate below. It’s INSANE.
The recipe will make more than you need, so I suggest storing it in the fridge and eating a spoonful after lunch. You can always cut the recipe for the chocolate in half but… that’s no fun.
So for real: we have a super fabulous crazy vitamin C packed slush to ward off all the germs that the polar vortex is blowing in. It’s more of a blended juice since the clems are so water-packed, but that just means you can suck it down more quickly. Add the chocolate for a treat – or for antioxidants. And I’ve also been throwing in a teaspoon of spirulina, but it will turn it a lovely shade of swamp and I knew I couldn’t convince you that way.
But this way… YES.
Chocolate Covered Clementine Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 (14-ounce) can full fat coconut milk
- 4 ounces high-quality dark chocolate, finely chopped
- 6 clementines, peeled
- 1 blood orange, peeled
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 to 6 ice cubes
Instructions
- Stir or shake the can of coconut milk well so the water and cream are combined. Place the chopped chocolate in a bowl. Remove 4 tablespoons of the coconut milk from the can and set the can aside. Heat the 4 tablespoons of coconut milk until hot – I find it easiest to put it in a small bowl and microwave it since it’s a smaller amount, but you can also heat it on the stovetop. Once hot, pour it over the chocolate. Let it sit for a minute, then stir constantly until the chocolate melts completely. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes so it thickens a bit. This makes a good amount of ganache and you can store it in the fridge, so if you don’t want extra, cut the amount of ingredients in half.
- Once the ganache has sat, spoon it inside the top half (or bottom… or both) of two glasses.
- In a blender, combine the remaining coconut milk, clementines, orange, banana, vanilla extract and ice in a blender and puree until completely smooth. Pour into the chocolate covered glasses and DRINK!

Apple cider vinegar! What does that do for sinus infections? Please share, I canNOT kick mine!
i don’t know if it’s necessarily “proven” – but it has a ton of remedies and allergies/sinus issues is one of them. i used to get 2 serious (like 2-3 week long) sinus infections a year but don’t anymore because i take take 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in the morning. dilute it in a bunch of water, you can have it warm, add honey or cinnamon, etc. but – you have to get the unpasteurized kind with the mother still in it. i use braggs: http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html
Apple cider vinegar is a miracle worker; I drink it on a daily basis (the way Jessica described it above–you can put more or less vinegar, depending on your taste). Among its many virtues, it helps prevent/fight illness, levels your pH, helps you lose weight, remedies headaches; basically, most of your health problems can be solved through apple cider vinegar; oh! It also helps with blemishes (I dilute it with a little bit of water (depending on how sensitive your skin is, you’ll need more or less water) dab a cotton ball in it, and apply.) I’ve found it very helpful with pimples/zits. A good resource is the book “Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System.”
Also, speaking of illnesses and miracle workers, coconut oil is a must! I’m currently reading “The Coconut Oil Miracle” and 1) I’m super angry with the soybean industry (read the book to find out about their propaganda war against coconut oil and their contributions in making the public terrified of tropical oils) and 2) I’m learning that coconut oil also strengthens your immune system (if you’re sick, take about a teaspoon of it orally (or mix it with something else if you can’t get it down by itself)) If you’re interested in learning about its full benefits, I definitely recommend that book (seeing this comment is already really long) :) Hope you get better soon!
Oh, and after that rant, can I just add that I could probably eat that coconut ganache straight from the bowl? Because I could :)
for me I found it raised my cholestrol (sp) level. So I can not use it. But yes it has many health factors for those that can use it.

This looks incredible! I always have so many clementines on hand, and this would be a fantastic way to use some up!
Your photographs are absolutely beautiful. This looks 10,000 times better than orange julius. As a teacher, I’m always trying to fight off whatever virus or cold is in the air. I think this will be my go-to from now on. :)
These look so delicious. I love the photos in this one! They remind me of summer! I have been craving chocolate and orange lately, so this will definitely be on the To-Make list!
Clementine + chocolate smoothie? That is a cool combo, I’ll have to try it! Especially with ganache. I’m totally down for ganache in my breakfast :)
I am so into this.
I LOVE orange julius, but honestly can’t remember the last time I had one. Totally a childhood favourite though! And adding chocolate obviously make it way better! Can’t wait to try this. Pinned!
Bought the ingredients for this the day you posted on Instagram, and I was going to make it this afternoon! But now I saw this and I totally want to make the chocolate ganache with it too. Just a quick question. The four tablespoons of coconut milk go into the smoothie or the ganache? I’m a little confused about the way the recipe is written :( Can’t wait to make this!!!
so sorry – the 4 TBSP go into the ganache! it’s what you heat up. just fixed it so it made more sense. :)
I hope you are feeling better. This drink looks amazing. Good thing you don’t have to be sick to enjoy one.
Ok, these photos!!! They’re seriously amazing.
And yum… this smoothie looks delish! :D
Yum! What brand of spirulina do you use?
This is such a cool flavour combination – classic, sure! But in a smoothie this is so unique!! Definitely need to try.
To clear – oh, just call a spade a spade: drain – your sinus cavity, facials are effective without involving drugs. Twice daily for one week, lower your head over a bowl of steaming water, then drape a large towel so as to enclose both your head and the bowl. Deeply inhale the steam until it dissipates. Fresh rosemary or other herbs add natural therapeutic fragrance. We all wish you good health again.
Ever since I saw this on your insta feed, I’ve been hoping for a recipe! YUM.
I hope you feel better soon! ACV is a miracle worker, so is sleeeeeep and tons of water. Best of luck! I hope you don’t get sick!
YUUUM! Thanks for sharing!

This is brilliant and I love that it is covered in chocolate. I love a good old Orange Julius smoothie!
Chocolate ganache in a clementine smoothie? I never even thought of making a clementine smoothie and I have never had chelate covered clementine, but I sure feel like I’m missing out. I’ll have to remedy that. Soon.
I’ve been eyeing this smoothie for while since I saw it on IG…now I can stop wishing and start indulging!
Jessica I just woke up to this fabulous post. The flavors, colors, the idea, the photographs, the photos make me want to run to Whole foods for citrus. I already have the chocolate.
Hey Jessica! I’m in love with your smoothie recipe! Clementines are on my daily agenda, so this will be made as soon as I get my hands on a can of coconut milk this week! And what’s better than chocolate in my smoothie? Chocolate and orange! YAY! Thank you!
Oh my! This looks decadent! I remember getting Orange Julius drinks all the time when I was growing up. We couldn’t go to the mall without buying one on the way out. Our favorite was always the Pina Colada. But have you tried them lately? They just don’t seem to be the same. Wah.
Ummm … YES!
Making this tomorrow morning, cannot wait…like, seriously thinking of going to bed early so tomorrow comes faster lol!
the contrast of the tangerine/orange color and rich dark chocolate is insanely beautiful. holy yum.
Alright, I’ve decided I have to get my own blood orange tree. They’re $4/bag at the grocery store! Nuts!
This looks so yummy! Do you have an apple cider vinegar brand that you recommend? I keep trying to use it and really not loving it at all!

My Ninja blender CANNOT handle clementines – what brand is your blender? Thanks!
Hi Rachel! I have a Vitamix and a KitchenAid Pro Line (which is KitchenAid equivalent to the Vita). We had a Ninja before and I found within months the blades dulled down so much, so I totally understand what you mean!
