Chocolate Chip Muffins.
I’m not really into pastries. I could pass by a donut tray and not even be tempted. And if there is a danish laying around? I’m not interested.
But sometimes all I really want is a warm muffin smeared with a bit of butter.
We rarely have muffins in our house. Mainly because they are a ‘breakfast’ food, and we rarely eat something like this for breakfast. We are also always on the go in the mornings, and Mr. How Sweet must get in his 27 egg whites to meet his protein requirements for the morning. You know the drill.
So in the chance that I ever do make muffins, I make them in the afternoon, or the evening.
And then they become the dessert that Mr. How Sweet shovels into his mouth while standing over sink.
When making muffins, I love adding some raw turbinado sugar on top for that delicious crunch.
I think most of us can agree that muffin tops are the best part, right?
So in my usual wasteful, bratty fashion, I tend to eat the tops off most muffins, and just leave them sitting on the counter.
I mean, I don’t want to waste the muffin by throwing it away.
But I only want the top.
(Which usually results in muffin tops over my jeans, but that’s neither here nor there.)
Muffins must be warm for me.
I’ll even take it when it is piping hot.
I usually scorch the tastebuds off of my tongue approximately 3 times a week, due to my lack of patience.
If you start seeing unappetizing recipes popping up, just know it’s because I no longer can taste anything. And we all know how boring the recipes would get if Mr. How Sweet was the only taste-tester.
Sometimes I am reluctant to only eat the muffin top, and feel like I should act as an adult.
As long as I can slather that baby with a bit of butter, all is right in the world.

I appreciate you so much!
Remember when I told you yesterday that Mr. How Sweet was a man’s man?
Last night was no exception.
He and his friends cut down a tree in our backyard, in the pouring rain, that was split from the massive snowstorm. There may have been a few cases of beer involved.
And some of that wretched old-school country that makes my ears bleed.
He looked like he took a roll in the mud. So I fed him pizza.

Can I just say wow and yum? I can totally pass up a deep fried donut, but a healthy muffin with a pat of butter? never
yummm. i loveeeee muffins. i could pass up a donut or danish any day, but a muffin? its tough… especially one that has chocolate! :-) looks good!
Can you ship your delicious eats??:)
AH i would take that muffin over 27 eggs any day! I love the idea of throwing some turbinado sugar on top to get that golden crunch!! you are a GENIOUS Jess and how was i NOT following you on twitter before?! I am now ;)
lol– your muffin top talk reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine’s boss starts a shop that sells only muffin tops– Top of the Muffin to You :-)
I’m on spring break this coming week, and even though it’s Passover, I might have to suck it up and make a couple of your recipes…including these!
I loooove hot muffins with butter. They remind me of my childhood poppyseed muffins, which I used to slice thinly and toast so each bite had a crunchy, buttery crust. YUM!
Chocolate chip muffins are my favorite, but I have not been able to find a good recipe for one…until now! Thanks!
I have to concur. I LOVE basically any type of muffin as long as it has some butter on it, and it is hot! There is really something about a muffin just pulled out of the oven, crunchy on the outside, and warm and satisfying on the inside. Wow, the longer Steve is gone, the more descriptive I get about “satisfying” muffins. I digress. I love muffins!
I like the tops the best two. But, I take the opposite approach, and eat the bottom part first, then I get to enjoy the top without “wasting” the bottom.
Save the best for last. :)
I totally agree about the top of the muffins being the best part, yum! I made some this weekend and every time I have eaten one I have shared with my Daughter so the bottom doesn’t go to waste :D
I’m with you on the muffin tops, I usually only end up eating the tops and it makes me feel so wasteful! haha
See… I’m really into pastries!!! Especially muffins and quick breads… so these are perfect!!!!
you are lucky…i am SO into pastries! these sound amazing…and a little bit of butter is ALWAYS the perfect addition to muffins. yum!
I love ALL baked goods, especially when chocolate chips are involved. Even though I’m home alone this weekend, I may have to make these to keep me company. ;) Thanks for sharing!!
I am a muffin top kind of girl, too. I don’t need the whole thing, just the top, please!
Panera’s ‘muffies’ are pretty stellar. I’ve always wondered how they make those!
I rarely make muffins because I can easily plow through a batch on my own… My boyfriend eats 7-10 egg whites every morning which always prompts me to sing the Gaston song from Beauty and the Beast (“when I was a lad I ate 4 dozen eggs every morning to help me get larrrrrge…”)
I wish I didnt love pastries. But I do. Even when I know they won’t be that good, I still usually eat one.
YES! Sugar on top of muffins makes them extra amazing. I LOVE chocolate chip muffins, I haven’t had one in a long time. Want! :D
Jenn
PS. Send me the pastries you do not want kthx ;)
These look lovely. I’m definitely a chocolate for breakfast girl. Awesome.
Love muffin tops too! Something we both need: http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Metallic-Gourmetware-Original-Muffin/dp/B0000CFN2C
Ohmigosh!! I think we ALL need that. :)
Drool. Those look like they would MELT in your mouth!
Amazing! I could eat 5 of those right now
It is so good to know that I am not the only one walking around with a compromised mouth due to impatience!! That sugar crunch is mandatory & so is the heat! Nice work :)
mmmm, i am all about the top of the muffin! i think that is why i like vitatops so much!
have a good weekend!
Mmmm, I agree – the top is the best part!!
Muffins are just wonderful.
Oh yum… you found my weakness – chocolate chip muffins!!!
I love your blog, it is so funny and I can definately relate with you and your man.
These muffins look delicious! I made the Happy Chicken the other day and JL said, now why don’t you make more stuff like this??? I guess we kinda have gotten into a bit of a food downturn since he is bored of all my usuals :)
I put sliced zuchinni on top with the mushrooms to add more vegis to the meal…
These muffins looks AWESOME! Love anything with chocolate chips in it ;)

Ok, that last picture is gorgeous!! My last summer in college I totally had a summer of the muffins. I made ’em everyday and my muffin top proved it! ;) Oh, but I do love choc. chip muffins… soooooo good! Especially with buttah!
I can’t pass muffins, pastries, danishes, or donuts!
These muffins look gorgeous!!
I cannot tell you how much your friendship means to me. I know that one day we will meet in person, and til then. Thank you a million times over. You are such a gem, Jessica, xoxoxo!!!!!!!!
Yum! I just made a chocolate Guinness Cake from scratch for my StepDad’s birthday tomorrow…I will post the recipe tomorrow but it made me think of you!!! haha!
Chocolate chip muffins are the best! I always used to get the vegan ones at my Whole Foods, but they have stopped carrying them for some reason. I guess it’s a good thing, they were becoming an addiction. :)
I have been SO into muffins lately, it’s so funny that you posted this…I’ve been on the hunt for new recipes!!
I am not into pastries either … or cake, unless it is uber moist!
I love muffins. I like them hot too, and I understand the feeling of scorching off the top of your mouth. I do that a lot, but usually with pizza, or coffee, or soup. I haven’t had a muffin in a really long time, probably because I don’t eat wheat. However I want to try with oat bran flour!!
That picture with the melted butter put me over the edge. Fantastic!!
Blessings-
Amanda

Just a thought–maybe warn us at the beginning of ohhhh say a brownie or muffin recipe so we can close our eyes, hold our breaths and pray we scroll down far enough to not see the yummy goodness! :P

I made these muffins last night and sent 4 home with the BF and took the rest to the office. The BF ate one on his way home and the other 3 with a huge glass of milk this morning and I have only been at work for 40 minutes and they are almost gone!
They are a huge hit!!!
Thanks for having such a great blog!! I only hope my blog after some work can be half as great as yours!

Your blog is great and so are the pictures of the choc chip muffins…my problem is that my chips always sink down. How do u prevent that?
If you toss the chocolate chips in a bit of flour first, that should help!
So many folks like just the muffin tops that at King Arthur Flour you can buy a “Muffin Top Pan”. Your recipes and photos inspire, thanks for sharing!
I will be making the Cake-Batter-Crispy-Treats tonight for my family, thanks for sharing.
