Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies – from scratch!
This cookie has been a long time coming.
You may remember that last year I baked some red velvet cookies, but used a boxed mix. Those cookies are delicious, but it was my mission to find a recipe for red velvet cookies from scratch. And the kicker? I wanted the cookies to be chewy. The only other red velvet cookie recipes from scratch that I’ve tried have been cakey cookies – which are delicious in their own sense, but I wanted a dense, chewy cookie.
After many attempts (read: massive fails) at the cookies over the last 10 months, I gave it another go this weekend and came up with something delectable.
And by delectable, I mean I ate 3 cookies straight off the pan and scorched my tongue. It’s okay… it was all in the name of cookies.
Even though red velvet is technically just rich chocolate, there is something fun and exciting about eating it. Dare I say the cookies taste better then regular cookies? I may be in my twenties, but I’m really just 5 years old.
Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies
makes 12-15 cookies
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon red food coloring
1/2 cup chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 375.
Cream butter and sugars together until fluffy in the bowl of an electric mixer. Add egg and vanilla and combine until smooth. Beat in red food coloring. Stir in cocoa, flour, baking soda and salt until just combined, scraping down the sides when needed. Fold in chocolate chips.
Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out 1-2 tablespoons of dough and set on baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
After eating a few cookies, I got a little delirious and did something wild.
Red velvet sandwich cookies stuffed with pumpkin spice cream cheese frosting. Best decision ever.

I’m a novice when it comes to baking and my attempts don’t always pan out so well, but I made these for the first time and they came out perfect, I actually didn’t want to share :)
So thanks and I am in love with your blog, I’m going to go through as many recipes as I can

These were amazing. I made them for co-workers and everyone raved!! Someone even said they were the best cookies they ever had, she then made them for her husband and he agreed. I made the snickerdoodle chip ones the next weekend for friends and they killed too. You have an avid recipe stealer now :)
This recipe was GREAT!!! Cookies were delishhhhhhhh!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. I’ve been looking for a red velvet cookie recipe for a long time. This one is definitely a keeper.
My husband’s favorite cookies have always been Snickerdoodles, until these!! His favorite cake was always Red Velvet Cake. So this year I decided to find a “from scratch” recipe of the cookies, and you have done it perfectly! I wouldn’t change a thing!!

I made these over the weekend and they were so delicious! I loved the soft yet chewy texture!! I added a tbsp of milk to the batter to thin it out just a tad and it worked great! Thanks for the great recipes!! Love your blog!

somehow when I made these the food colouring just mixed in with the colour of the cocoa powder! So I pretty much got double chocolate chip cookies :( Still delicious though.

These sound great! I’m going to try it this week sometime!
Although these are delicious cookies I do have one issue….My cookies never come out Red!? has anyone else had this issue?
hey, i had that issue when making the cake in the past but i found if you mix the batter for a while it does lighten up in colour and the then adding the red makes is come through easier.. good luck and hope it works out next time! i dont know if its true, just past experiences
Thanks for the recipe! I made this today and we love it esp. my little brother, hopefully i could show you :)
My cookies turn out to be double chocolate….not red..
So excited to make these thank you for posting! I planned on making red velvet cupcakes for my cousins graduation party but they requested. Cookies instead I was pretty disappointed until I found this so thanks!
I just made these cookies tonight after craving red velvet and these were soooo delicious! Thr only thing i would add is a bit more food coloring because mine turned out just brown. :(
i just made these they are good but the salt could be cut down to an 1/8 teaspoon instead of 1/4 but other than that one comment they are fantastic

I made these last night. Wow! They are the best cookies ever! I made them with white chocolate chips and they were perfect. I have a convection oven so I baked them at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. They were soft, chewy and delicious! I will be making them again soon :)

These are sinfully wonderful.. I however used white chocolate chips and did add 3 more tsps of red coloring…also added 2 tbls. of butter milk as the dough was dry.. but they are wonderful cookies and thank you very much for coming up with a “from scratch” red velvet cookie, way better than from a box.. :)

OMGoodness! This is an amazing recipe. However, I didn’t have any food coloring, or chocolate chips. But I added Andes mint baking chips and used 4 squares of unsweetened baker’s chocolate and they were a great hit at my party. Next time though, I’m definitely making red velvet cookies instead. Thanks so much for the recipe!!!
Hi,
So I doubled this recipe and I added an extra egg, so 3 eggs. When I tasted the dough, it was quite bitter and salty. I still have plenty of batter left. Any Ideas how I can fix it? I used powdered red food dye. HELP!! I need to fix this. Thanks.
Add more sugar? I’m not sure if maybe the powered dye gave it the bitter taste. Good luck!

These were fantastically delicious and very easy to make! But they don’t stay around for long :)
Wow!!!! Oh my goodness these cookies are to die for… I too have now scorched my tongue..lol..but so worth it… your hard work is much appreciated..
Red velvet gets it’s name from the oxidation which occurs when vinegar and chocolate are mixed, it’s not just rich chocolate. The other thing that makes red velvet…well, velvet is the buttermilk. Food for though.

I’m not sure what I did wrong with these – they were great and chewy coming out of the oven, but once I set them on the cooling rack they hardened up and, although they were still delicious they were not chewy at all. I was super bummed because the chew for me was the draw; I’ve been making red velvet variation cookies for three days, but that these still didn’t end up chewy for some reason makes me sad.

Just made these. The kids and I love them. So much for dinner.
Based on all the good reviews I thought this would be the perfect recipe, but it wasn’t so perfect for me. Firstly, I burnt the first batch! My oven cooks faster than others so I figured 10 mins should be ok, but they burnt! Next batch, I cooked for 8 mins and still slightly toasted so I lowered temp to 325 and baked for 7 1/2 mins and they were perfect. Secondly, my cookies do not look like the ones in the picture, mines came out cakey despite following the instructions. And finally, they looked like chocolate, no sign of redness. They did taste good! no doubt about that, but they were cakey and not chewy. I don’t know what happened :(
I – instead of putting the cookies around the pumpkin cream cheese ( too much cookie for me) – took cookie dough flattened it out and added about a teaspoon or a little more filling then rolled the dough back into a ball and cooked them. So the mixture would be inside.
Delicious recipe ! :)
I LOVE this recipe, I have made at least 10 batches in the past few months…
my favorite variation is to make “thumbprint” cookies and add the pumpkin spice frosting in the thumbprint. If I do it when the cookies are still warm, the icing melts enough to level out, then hardens a little so it’s not messy-soft like frosting out of the can.
So. Much. Goodness.
Thank you!!
I made these today for my family and they tasted great! Only thing is, the did not look red at all. :/ They were more like brownie cookies. Overall everyone enjoyed them though! Thanks!
Love love this recipe! These cookies never last a day.

I really want to try this recipe but we don’t have an oven.. All i can use is a toaster oven.. Can i make this using only a toaster oven? Any tips??? :)))
This is what I do since I’m too lazy to clean our oven. What I do is set the timer to a “quarter”. Then I turn the baking sheet then set the timer again a little less than a quarter this time. You also need to keep a eye on it so it wont burn.
