Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.
Let’s talk about raisins.
I know. Gross. I can barely even think of a raisin without cringing.
I’m just not into them. I can’t chew something that is labeled plump and shriveled at the same time. I like the words plump and shriveled to pertain to warm, cuddly and loving grandmas who knit blankets and scarves and drink hot cocoa. Not my food.
Sometimes I accidentally eat a raisin when I shovel handfuls of salty trail mix into my mouth. Other times I accidentally eat a raisin when I’m picking every single chocolate chip out of a bag of trail mix. Occasionally I bite into a warm, gooey cookie expecting to find a melted chocolate chip ribbon, only to discover… a raisin. Then I cry. Ew.
Sometimes I can snack on one or two raisins, but I’m really just… judging them.
Luckily… these cookies have nothing to do with raisins. Lovely, right?
Instead of raisins, I stuffed thick oatmeal cookies with a boatload of chocolate chips. Large and in charge cookies. I underbaked them slightly, resulting in a super chewy and gooey cookie with the perfect chocolate ribbons I crave. Then I ate them. Almost all of them. They complete me.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cups rolled oats
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 1/4 cups chocolate chips
- optional: 1- 2 tablespoons milk if dough is crumbly
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Beat butter and sugars with an electric mixer until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mixing well until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon with the mixer on medium speed. Beat in oats. Mix until dough comes together. Add in 1 tablespoon milk if the dough is crumbly. If dough is still crumbly, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it comes together. Fold in chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Remove dough from fridge and roll into big 1 1/2 inch balls. Set on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Lightly press down on dough to flatten it. Bake at 375 for 9-11 minutes.

Mmmm…believe it or not, oatmeal cookies are some of my favorites! I love the oat-y flavor and chewy texture they give.
OH yeah, and I totally agree with you about the raisins. Hate. Them.
Chocolate chips are SO much better! :-D
I am buying what you’re sellin’ on the raisin tip. I find them both intrusive and offensive, because they often sneak up on you when least expected. Thank you for being the cog in the wheel to help break up raisins and oatmeal. Oatmeal looks so much cuter partnered with chocolate. Yay!
PS: Your writing style makes me smile. You are a funny lady.
I’ve got tickets on the Raisins Don’t Belong in Cookies train too. Where are you sitting? Let’s hang out.
Raisin haters unite! You know what’s worse than raisins? HOT raisins. I gagged a little typing that.
hahaha! This made me laugh.
Ewwwwww. I can’t even think of that.
I also am NOT a fan of raisins in my cookies. I 100% agree with changing them to chocolate chips.
I feel the SAME way about oatmeal raisin cookies. Like – why do they exist? They make no sense. These cookies, however, make a lot of sense.
I’m sorry. We can’t be friends anymore. I love raisins. Love them in cookies. Love them in trail mix. In granola bars. Even on my salad. I love to eat raisins plain.
It’s been great being your friend all this time (or was it one sided stalking??, not sure). But, raisins rock.
On the bright side, I love chocolate chips too and would never make you eat a raisin :)
Aimee
oats are healthy..they ARE! No one can tell me different, even if they are cased in butter, sugar and chocolate…
plus, there is an egg in there, so it’s basically breakfast.
Ooooh you are so smart. I like you.
Yes! Completely agree – chocolate chip oatmeal cookies trump oatmeal raisin allll the way home.
I agree that I HATE when I bite into a cookie, thinking it is chocolate chip to find raisins in there. Blech. But, if you tell me ahead of time to expect raisins, then I like them.
Oh and I do love golden raisins — those I can eat by the boatload.
I love PB oatmeal cookies!
Jessica they look awesome! Chewy, large and in charge, oh yea!
The photography is beautiful. I say this lately every post, but seriously, you should be SO PROUD of your photography. Just…so lovely!
And the recipe aint half bad either :)
all i’m saying is i’m glad that they have oatmeal in them so they’re healthy…there’s no way i would have made them if they weren’t ;) PSYCH!
Ew ew ew. Raisins are foul. Nature’s candy my ***. Nothing ruins a cookie like raisins. But whenver I read a recipe that says “raisins,” I know it actually means chocolate chips. Thanks for taking that step out for me.
I actually like raisins, but I prefer chocolate chips! ;)
Amen- I always make oatmeal chocolate chunkers instead of oatmeal raisin! In fact, I think of all the cookies I’ve made- my oatmeal chocolate chips are Josh’s favorite. And as for plump and shriveled ….I like my dogs like that ;)
Your cookies look yummy! I make chocolate oatmeal bars they taste just like a cookie. The chocolate layer is chips melted with sweet and condensed milk.
Robyn… I need that recipe!
I have the exact same feeling towards raisins! The only way I’ll eat them is if they are stale and NOT in a baked good… is that weird?
I totally get that!
Chocolate will always trump raisins. Raisins are kinda like putting walnuts in your cookies or brownies…they just don’t belong there.
Love oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips!!
I used to despise raisins as a kid, and I can’t say I love them now, but they’re tolerable in baked goods and salad bar salads a la Whole Foods. Chocolate chips still reign far superior though!
These look so good! Agreed on cookies with raisins! It’s blasphemy!
::gasp:: I love raisins – for real. I eat so many of them in a day it’s kind of ridiculous.
Reeeaaaaally? OKay, I still love you.
I am completely with you on the distaste of raisins!!! Can you make a cinnamon bread recipe for us? I love cinnamon bread, but besides pepperidge farm everyone makes “cinnamon raisin” bread and it breaks my heart. These cookies look delicious.
I will try!
I def perfer the choc chips over the raisins any day!
Raisins make me gag too….there’s just nothing appetizing about them! I am totally on board with these cookies…oats, chocolate chips….YUM!
With healthy oats, the calories go negative!
Yessss!
I like raisins, but I like chocolate better!! :D
Plus oatmeal makes it ok to eat 10 cookies in one sitting! hahaha
poor raisins! they’re not all that bad, but i do have to agree with you that they sure can throw you off when you’re expecting chocolate! my favorite oatmeal cookies have white chocolate chips and cranberries…so good!
I make those too. I love them!
Me too! And sometimes some walnuts. Mm.
I bake for my local farmer’s market and have been asked many times what my stance on raisins is. Like you, I loathe them. I try to avoid baking with them at all costs. Last year a woman who came to my table was sharing her dislike of them as well. She told me that her mother-in-law used to make a meatloaf and toss raisins in to the mix. Can you even imagine the horror of that?!
UGH!!! That sounds so gross to me.
I also despise rasins- yuck! Once I asked my son if he wanted rasins in his oatmeal, he said. ” No bugs in mine please.” My feelings exactly!
I could NOT agree more. I think there is a place for raisins and that place is not inside my awesome oatmeal cookie. I always sub choc chips so this is one of my all time FAVORITE combinations!
Oh I love raisins! haha! But actually I perfer just plain oatmeal cookies…no raisins, no chocolate chips, no nuts…just plain. I’m odd. I know.
I love your oddness.
Sounds like someone needs to have a 92 year-old lady’s (which would be my grandma) oatmeal raisin cookies. Raisin haters rejoice in these cookies. Don’t lose hope on raisins!
I HATE raisins in my food … for instance – the oatmeal raisin granola bars – I pick around the raisins and just eat the oatmeal part. Or cinnamon toast with raisins – i’m left with a holey piece of bread. Ergo, I do believe i must make these cookies!
Me too!
OMG — you are me incarnate. I also accidentally eat raisins when trying to find all the chocolate chips in the trail mix. I cannot stand when you THINK you are eating an oatmeal chocolate chip and it turns out to be raisins — sooo gross. I mean, shriveled grapes. Anyway, great minds think alike!
This is a keeper!
Guh, raisins are the worst! I cannot count how many times I’ve bitten into something hoping for chocolate chips and have instead found raisins. I mean, grapes are awesome, who decided to “improve” them by leaving them out in the sun too long?

Also I’m beyond psyched about these cookies. Oatmeal makes me feel healthy, and chocolate chips make my mouth feel happy.
Seriously.
Annnnnnnd I have a feeling that these will soon be preventing my weight loss efforts this week ;)
Although I like raisins I definitely agree that chocolate chips are the best way to make oatmeal cookies. You simply can’t have cookies without ooey gooey chocolate :)
Yummy! I have a recipe for those that’s very similar to yours, but somehow, as usual, yours look better than mine! :D
I’m with you – not a fan of raisins. I’ll add a ton of other things into my oatmeal cookies for my own personal selfishness and raisins in another batch for everyone else.
I totally agree that anything with oats, including cookies, is healthy! ;-)
Raisins are God’s cruel joke to humanity. So glad to see an oatmeal cookie devoid of gross raisins!! YUM!!!
i was just looking for the perfect chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe! thanks for the recipe!
I like raisins in my oatmeal cookies and pretty much nowhere else. Nothing worse than a cinnamon roll with raisins. I’ll have to try these. I might be cured of my need for them in cookies too.
Raisins are so boring and overrated. Dried cherries, on the other hand, bring plump and shriveled to a whole new level.
I hope you can understand.
Or cranberries. I totally agree.
Yes yes yes
I am OBSESSED with dried cherries. I love them from Northern Michigan… best cherries ever. I have a cherries and cream recipe under my cookies!
I knew you must love them! You kinda had to because our minds and souls are obviously one.
And um, yes. Michigan is amazing. Maybe I’m just saying that cause that’s where I live, but even though our economy sucks, at least we have apples, cereal, great lakes, and cherries. I mean, you can’t really beat that.
Your cherry cookies look so dang good. I just made cherry scones the other day. Scones can actually be awesome, so don’t judge me. haha. You can look at em if you don’t believe me.

I love scones!
What a relief! :]
Cowboy Cookies are my favorite! I made a batch over my Bake a Little that used applesauce to lighten em up a bit. Delish.
I’m with you – I love oatmeal cookies but I’m not a raisin-in-baking kind of girl. I have to admit though, I like a crispy cookie. Still, these look pretty darn delicious!
as long as there is chocolate in my oats then I am one happy girl.
